Chapter 3

작가: Ebon Luna
"Master Quentin, is something wrong?" Madeline couldn't help but ask.

Quentin had been standing silently, not taking his seat.

"Is it the food? Perhaps the dishes today don't suit your taste? If that's the case, I can have all this Sacholles cuisine taken away," she said.

"This... this is really precious... and you just threw it into the trash?"

Quentin didn't seem to hear her. His gaze was locked on the half piece of red truffle lying in the garbage can.

He stared at it—

As if his heart was bleeding.

"Precious?" Madeline looked puzzled. "Master Quentin, I'm not sure what you're referring to...?"

Everyone in the Madison family turned toward him, confused.

"This red truffle."

Quentin's hand trembled as he picked the red truffle out of the garbage. He rinsed it gently under clear water, then—

Right in front of everyone, he popped it into his mouth and swallowed it whole.

"What?!"

The entire Madison family froze in shock.

Scarlet's face turned crimson in an instant.

The truffle Quentin just ate... was the one she had spat out earlier.

"Master Quentin, what are you doing?" Even Madeline looked stunned.

He was a Grandmaster, the top fighter in Goldspire. And he just ate a discarded mushroom from the trash?

"Heh. Forgive me, everyone. You must think I've lost my mind," Quentin said lightly, his mood lifted. "It's just... something like this that can extend life is nearly impossible to come by in all of the nine realms. When I saw that red truffle, I couldn't help myself..."

"Extend life?" someone repeated.

The Madison family looked even more lost now.

"A single red truffle can extend your life by half a month. It's a rare wild delicacy and not cheap—at least 400,000 dollars per piece. And even at that price, it's not something you can procure easily. I never imagined I'd find one here. Honestly, even with my status, I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to taste one."

Quentin let out a hearty laugh.

'400,000 dollars? Extend half a month of life?'

His words struck like a blade, cutting straight through the hearts of everyone present.

Every pair of eyes turned, almost in unison, toward Cora in her wheelchair.

Because...

She had eaten nineteen red truffles earlier. All by herself.

"Master Quentin... are you sure?" Scarlet asked again, her voice desperate. "Are you absolutely certain that red truffles can extend life? You're not joking?"

She simply couldn't wrap her head around it.

How could a backwoods hick like Emory afford a bride price worth millions? And if he was that capable, why would he marry a disabled woman he had never even met before?

Before Quentin could speak, Yvette beside him snapped coldly at Scarlet, "Watch your mouth! How dare a nobody from Vermillion Delta question Master Quentin?"

"Scarlet! Apologize to Master Quentin—now!" Madeline followed up with a sharp slap across Scarlet's face.

They couldn't afford to offend Quentin. The Madison family would be wiped off the map in Vermillion Delta by tomorrow if they did.

"I—I'm sorry, Master Quentin... I was out of line. I shouldn't have questioned you," Scarlet stammered, shrinking like a frightened cat, her head bowed low in fear.

"The ignorant are not guilty," Quentin said evenly. "After all, with the Madison family's status, it's no wonder you've never encountered a rare treasure like red truffle."

He sat down, took a couple of polite bites of the Sacholles dishes, then rose.

"I've got some matters to attend to. You all enjoy your meal."

"I'll see you out, Master Quentin," said Madeline, quickly standing up.

But Quentin shook his head. "No need."

He walked to the door. But just as he reached the threshold, he paused, turned back, and said to her, "Madeline. On account of that red truffle earlier, let me offer you a word of advice. From now on... keep an eye out for a young man who goes by the nickname 'The Reaper'.

"I hear he's come to Vermillion Delta looking for a marriage match. If your family earns his favor, forget the thirteen cities of Vermillion Delta. Even across the whole of the nine realms, the Madison family would have nothing to fear."

"The Reaper?" Madeline repeated, intrigued. "Master Quentin, who exactly is The Reaper? Is he really that powerful?"

"Powerful?" Quentin chuckled softly. "Even the War God who protects the nine realms would be like a moth to flame before him—completely helpless. If the mystic arts world has an end... Then in my eyes, he is that end."

There was awe and longing in Quentin's expression.

"Master Quentin, do you know his full name? Where is he from?" Scarlet leaned forward, curiosity piqued by Quentin's reverence.

"I'm not sure of his background either," Quentin said vaguely. "But... I believe the High Commissioner called him E.B."

After Quentin and Yvette left, silence settled over the Madison family once again.

'The God of War is like a moth to a flame before the Reaper? Is he really that terrifying?'

As her thoughts drifted to the legendary female war goddess of Nordine, a faint blush crept across Scarlet's face.

What if she could marry The Reaper? Wouldn't that be something?

"Emory! What was that red truffle all about?" a stern elder from the Madison family suddenly barked. "Something so rare, so precious—a life-extending delicacy—and you didn't think to tell anyone? You let Madeline stew it with chicken? Are you deliberately mocking our family?"

At that moment, all eyes turned toward Cora. Their gazes brimmed with envy and resentment.

"Uncle, don't blame Emory," someone offered, trying to ease the tension. "Maybe he didn't even know it was a red truffle that could prolong life."

Before Emory could respond, Cora, sitting in her wheelchair, let out a quiet, bitter laugh.

"No one in their right mind would spend millions in betrothal gifts just to marry someone disabled like me."

"Exactly!" Scarlet chimed in. "That red truffle must've been something Emory dug up by chance. If he had known its value, would he really have settled for Cora? He only compromised because he knew he wasn't good enough for me."

Scarlet scoffed openly. "Too bad Cora is a cripple. Even if she lives an extra year or two, what's the point? The red truffles were totally wasted on her."

"Right? Cora, why don't you go get your stomach pumped?" another elder suggested lightly. "Maybe we'll find a few undigested red truffle pieces in there for the rest of us?"

"That's a great idea!"

The others brightened at the thought.

"You people have gone too far." Emory's voice was quiet, but it carried weight as he stared at the greedy faces around him. "Cora is my wife. If anyone dares hurt her, don't blame me for what happens next."

"Oh come on, Emory. It's just a stomach pump. She's not gonna get hurt from it," someone countered casually.

But Emory didn't budge.

Scarlet sneered, "Let's just drop it, Uncle. Why waste your breath on some country bumpkin like Emory? As for Cora—who knows what that cripple's stomach might pass on. I'm not risking eating anything that came out of her."

"If Scarlet won't eat it, then neither will I," another younger Madison chimed in. "Just an extra half-month of life? I'm not that desperate."

"Alright, enough bickering!" Madeline finally interjected. "They're just a few mushrooms—what's there to obsess over? Even if you do want to dig them out, Cora's probably digested them by now."

She paused momentarily, her tone shifting.

"Since the whole family's gathered today, I have an announcement to make. Half a month ago, the Caison family from Nambern came to Vermillion Delta. They want to invest in an international music academy. Who among you will go talk terms with them? I'll gift the one who seals the deal Rose Villa by Viona Lake."

A hush fell over the room.

Rose Villa was one of the Madison family's core properties.

"Grandma, I've studied music since I was a child. I'd like to represent our family in discussions with the Caison family," came a calm voice.

All heads turned.

It was Cora—still seated in her wheelchair.

"You want to negotiate with the Caison family?" Scarlet looked stunned. Then she burst into laughter. "Cora, are you daydreaming?

"The Caison family of Nambern is a powerhouse in Sacholles Province, backed by the Duke of Sacholles himself. Even Master Quentin wouldn't dare cross them—neither would the High Commissioner. You think someone like you can deal with them? A cripple representing the Madison family? That's a joke."

"She's right," another elder in a sharp suit added grimly. "Cora, you shouldn't meddle in family business. If people from Sacholles see you acting as our representative, they'll think the Madison family has fallen to the gutters."

"I…" Cora's lips parted, but she couldn't find the words. Her eyes flicked toward her grandmother, searching for a lifeline, a chance.

But Madeline didn't even meet her gaze.

"No. Absolutely not."

"Grandma, I can do it. Please… just give me one chance."

Tears welled in Cora's eyes.

Rose Villa meant everything to her. It was the place she and her late father had promised to return to. It held her entire childhood.

If her father were still alive… maybe she'd still be living there now.

"I said no, and I meant it! You're disabled—you have no right to represent the Madison family!"

And with that, Cora finally broke down.

Watching his wife—so beautiful, so helpless, and now utterly devastated—Emory turned toward Madeline.

"Madeline," he said, "if Cora's legs could be cured… would you allow her to negotiate with the Caison family then?"

"Fine. As long as Cora's leg can be cured, I'll let her represent the Madison family in the negotiations with the Caison family."Madeline looked down at Emory from her high-backed chair, her gaze sharp and commanding."Alright then. I'll heal her leg right now."Emory didn't understand why his wife was so set on being the Madison family's representative in those talks, but they were husband and wife. He would help her fulfill this wish."You're going to heal Cora's leg?" Madeline blinked, stunned by Emory's confidence.Even Cora herself turned to him in disbelief. Before Emory could make a move, Scarlet folded her arms across her chest and let out a cold, mocking laugh."Emory, are you serious? Talking nonsense in broad daylight. What do you know about medicine? Even Dr. Ian, the top doctor in Goldspire, couldn't heal Cora's leg—and you think you can?""I studied medicine in the Vale of Cameron from a young age, I—""Enough, Emory!" Scarlet cut him off sharply. "Don't talk to

"Emory, shut up!" Helen's fury flared the moment she saw Emory offering unsolicited advice to Dr. Ian. "You don't know the first thing about medicine, so stop spouting nonsense. Dr. Ian is the top doctor in Goldspire. What makes you think you're qualified to show off your so-called skills in front of him? Just because you've read a few books on folk remedies?""Mom, Emory was only trying to—""Be quiet." Helen shot her daughter a sharp glare. "Do you have any idea what kind of damage reckless words can cause in a clinic? People can die because of them."Emory didn't argue. He only murmured to himself, as if he hadn't heard her at all. "When cold toxins enter the body, symptoms often include appetite loss and vivid dreams. Especially around midnight, a stabbing pain three inches below the navel, accompanied by—""That's enough." Before he could finish, Michelle's cold voice cut through the air. "I don't need you repeating my father's condition back to me. If you're really a doctor, t

"Emory, Scarlet is being generous enough to let you compete with a professional archer. Aren't you going to pick a bow?" Lillian Eldrich, tall and sharp-tongued, couldn't help prodding him when she saw Emory still rooted to the spot."But why should I compete with him?" Emory glanced coolly at Sylas. "Beating him would be a waste of time. It means nothing to me.""You? Beat Sylas? Are you dreaming? He was in the top four at the national championships!"Lillian sneered."Emory, you just said competing with me was meaningless. What—are you looking to make it more interesting?" Sylas narrowed his eyes at him."That's exactly what I meant." Emory held up three fingers. "If you lose, pay me this amount.""Three million?" Sylas's brow twitched. He might've been born into money, but even his monthly allowance was only 700,000 dollars.Three million... that would be his monthly allowance from the last four and a half months."Emory, have you never seen money before? Goldspire City, Hudds Ventures."Dad, something's happened to the Blackwell Enterprises." Lucy stood in front of Hudds, her expression complicated."What happened?" Darian's question came instinctively."It's… Michelle. Her father—he passed away. Suddenly."As Lucy spoke, she couldn't help but recall what Emory had once said at Dr. Ian's clinic."What? Clark's dead?" Darian was stunned, unable to process it right away."The autopsy report says it was due to cold exposure…" Her voice trailed off, hesitant."Cold exposure?" Darian fell into silence.Because he remembered—Back at the clinic, Dr. Ian had clearly treated Clark Blackwell's condition. If that were true, how could he die from something as mundane as cold?"Dad, do you think… maybe we really did meet a miracle doctor?"After a brief pause, Lucy's voice grew steadier, tinged with awe. "Maybe it wasn't just cold. Maybe… it was some kind of cold poison invading your system.""…Hmm." Darian considered her words, his

Watching the Iris Nightshade juices seep into the ground, Emory just shook his head and sighed, saying nothing. It was Cora, sitting in her wheelchair, who spoke up for him. "Aunt Hilda, even if you don't believe Emory, you didn't have to smash the glass like that…""That's enough, Cora. Shut your mouth," Hilda cut her off coldly. "Look at you—you're crippled yourself, and you're still defending this con man?"She turned her glare toward Helen next. "Helen! Can't you keep your son-in-law in check? Why are you letting him cause a scene in the hospital?""Emory!" Helen exploded, her voice sharp and angry. "If you say one more word, get out of my house!"She couldn't vent her frustration on the Madison family, so she poured it all onto Emory.Inside, though, she was burning with resentment. How did her daughter end up marrying such a loud-mouthed hillbilly?"Mom, stop yelling at Emory. He meant well." Cora spoke up, going against her mother."Well? Ha! I think he's up to no good,"

"What? Master Quentin, are you… are you serious? Alright. I understand."When Madeline hung up the phone, every pair of eyes in the room turned toward her."Mom, what did Master Quentin call about?"She drew a long breath, steadying the emotion in her voice. "Do you remember how the Caison family from Nambern was planning to invest in an international music academy in Vermillion Delta?"Everyone nodded."Well, Master Quentin just informed me—the representative from the Caison family is Robert Caison."At the mention of that name, her tone shifted, carrying a weight of reverence."What? Robert? The legendary Aetherlord?""He's one of the most powerful people in Sacholles, and he is coming to Vermillion Delta?""I heard Robert suffered a serious injury years ago. They said he wouldn't live past sixty. Maybe he's here to return to his roots. His mother was from Vermillion Delta, after all."As hushed murmurs filled the room, Madeline's voice cut through them like a blade. "Silenc

In the tranquil courtyard of Crystal Baycourt, an old man wrapped in a white mink coat sat playing chess with a young girl in a teal-blue tunic. She looked about eighteen or nineteen, ponytail tied high. She looked lively and mischievous."Grandpa, you've lost again," Cassidy Caison said, placing a white piece on the board. She stuck out her tongue playfully. "You're so bad at this—can't even win a single game against me.""Maybe it's because I'm getting old," Robert replied, eyes drifting to the black piece in his hand, gaze lost in memories long gone."You're only fifty-nine," she retorted. "That's not old at all."Just as her voice faded, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed from the courtyard behind them. A servant's voice followed, "Ms. Cassidy, Scarlet Madison of the Madison family has come to visit.""Hm?"Cassidy looked up at the woman walking toward them. She was elegant, with a sultry charm that turned heads. Cassidy's face remained neutral."What do you want, Ms.

"Grandpa…" Cassidy choked out a sob the moment she saw Robert open one eye. "You're finally awake. I thought—I thought I'd never see you again…"But Emory shook his head slowly."He's not awake," he said quietly. "This is just the final flare of light before the flame goes out.""The final flare?" Cassidy's voice trembled. "Can he still be saved?""He can," Emory replied, nodding with calm certainty."Then I'm counting on you, Doctor."Something in the way he said it—steady, unrushed—allowed a fragile hope to stir in Cassidy's chest.Time passed. One minute. Then another. Ten minutes slipped by.Neither Cassidy nor Lucy dared make a sound. After the dinner at Madison estate, Cora left with Emory. After they were gone, Alice strolled over to Scarlet with a smile. "Scarlet, aren't you going to help Cora find Linda's granddaughter?"Earlier during dinner, Cora had explained the complications holding up construction in Everdeen Village. Without locating Linda's granddaughter, the international music academy project couldn't move forward."Me? Why would I help Cora?" Scarlet's lips curled in a cold smirk. "It's not like the Caison family's working with me. Besides, I'm honestly curious—how long do you think they'll tolerate Cora's delays? I wouldn't be surprised if the Caison family loses their patience.""You mean, you don't think she'll find Linda's granddaughter?" Alice asked, catching the implication."Hmph. It's not easy to find a girl who's been missing for ten years." Scarlet shook her head, voice heavy with disdain. "Does Cora really think she can keep pulling off miracles?""You've got a point." Alice nodded. "L

She didn't bother speaking—clearly, she thought engaging would be beneath her."No," Emory admitted, shaking his head as the eyes around the table settled on him. "I'm not a mystic warrior. But I—""I knew you weren't!" Ellen cut him off before he could finish. "You're just some country bumpkin from the mountains. What do you know about mystic arts? Do you have any idea how expensive the training is? You couldn't even afford a proper betrothal gift for Cora—how on earth would you pay for lessons?"She straightened up, her voice rising with self-righteous superiority. "And let me remind you—Derrick's backed by Jason Eli, the most dangerous man in Goldspire's underworld. Jason recently reached the level just below Master Quentin himself. Do you think you can afford to offend him? Even our family has to tr

"Honey, you know her?" Cora asked, unable to hide her curiosity as she noticed Emory staring at the girl in the photo frame."No," Emory said, shaking his head. She sighed. "Alright then…"She hesitated, then continued, "Her granddaughter's been missing for ten years. Trying to find her now... it's close to impossible.""We won't know unless we try." Emory offered a faint smile. "Unless, of course, you're planning to bulldoze Linda's house for your international music academy?""I don't want to do that," Cora said, her voice soft but firm. "She's been through enough.""Then let me handle it," Emory said, lifting the frame. "If we're lucky, we'll have something by tomorrow."He turned and walked away, photo in hand.Watching his back, Cora spoke under her breath, "Mom, do you think he can really find her?""Find her? Linda spoke with a bitter edge to her voice, a mix of sorrow and self-mockery bleeding through every word."It's really nothing, Linda," Cora said softly, offering a gentle smile that felt like a breeze in spring. "Helping you… helps me too."Emory, standing nearby, watched his wife chatting with the old woman and frowned. "Cora, what's going on? What do you mean, helping yourself? And who was that woman earlier?""That was Denise," Cora replied. "She was adopted by Linda, but she's never supported her—not even once. All she does is wish for Linda to die so she can take her house and money. A complete ingrate."Her anger rose as she continued. "If Denise really managed to snatch the house, she'd definitely use it to blackmail the Madison family for a cut of the relocation compensation from Everdeen Village. That's why I stepped in, and… things got heated.""I see," Emory said quietly, watching his wife stand up for the old woman. "What about Linda's other family? No one else around

When Emory arrived at Everdeen Village, the first thing he saw was Helen arguing heatedly with a flashy young woman dressed to the nines. Nearby, Cora sat on the ground, wiping tears from her eyes."Cora, Helen, what happened?" Emory walked up, his voice calm but concerned. Before Cora could answer, Helen snapped, pointing a trembling finger at the woman. "What gives you the right to hit my daughter?"The young woman didn't flinch. She crossed her arms and sneered. "So what if I hit her? She stuck her nose where it didn't belong.""You—!"Helen looked ready to lash out, but Cora gently tugged at Helen's arm and shook her head. "Let it go, Mom. Let her leave.""You still not gone?" Helen barked, turning back to the woman. The woman glared at Cora as she turned to leave. "Let me tell you something, Cora. Linda's house, her money—it's all mine now. I don't respect elders. So what? What can you do about it? You wanna play hero again next time?" she sneered. "I'll beat you to death."

"A ninth-rank mystic warrior, huh?"Emory gave a wry smile, then turned to Bobby. "All right. I'll meet him."Soon enough, Emory was in Lunar Ventures's reception room, face to face with Jason. Jason wore a black jacket, and his body—solid with bronzed muscle—looked built for war."You're the new chairman of Lunar Ventures, Emory Belen?" Jason's hawk-like eyes bored into him."I am," Emory replied calmly. "What do you want?""I want your company to find someone for me," Jason said, all confidence. "Do the job, and I'll pay you seven million."He slid a photograph across the table. It showed a girl, no older than sixteen or seventeen."Not interested," Emory said without glancing at the picture.Jason's smile didn't falter, but his voice darkened. "You might want to reconsider, Emory. I have a feeling we'll be working together a lot in Goldspire in the future."As he spoke, an invisible force surged from Jason, exploding the table and chairs in front of him into splinters.Bobb

When the meeting finally wrapped up, Cora sought out Scarlet in private."What do you want?" Scarlet arched a brow, glancing at her with a smirk that carried more arrogance than curiosity."Scarlet, do you know why Linda refuses to move?" Cora asked, genuinely curious. The compensation their family had offered was generous—by any measure, Linda shouldn't still be clinging to that dilapidated house in Everdeen Village."Of course I know why." Scarlet's smile deepened with mischief. "But why would I tell you?"Cora was at a loss for words."Cora, the Caisons handed you the international music academy project. That means it's your responsibility. Don't come running to me every time you hit a wall. Why should I help you? Why don't you ask Emory for his help?" Her voice dripped with mockery.
