Chapter 11

Author: Ebon Luna
"Grandpa…" Cassidy choked out a sob the moment she saw Robert open one eye. "You're finally awake. I thought—I thought I'd never see you again…"

But Emory shook his head slowly.

"He's not awake," he said quietly. "This is just the final flare of light before the flame goes out."

"The final flare?" Cassidy's voice trembled. "Can he still be saved?"

"He can," Emory replied, nodding with calm certainty.

"Then I'm counting on you, Doctor."

Something in the way he said it—steady, unrushed—allowed a fragile hope to stir in Cassidy's chest.

Time passed.

One minute. Then another. Ten minutes slipped by.

Neither Cassidy nor Lucy dared make a sound. The two women stood still, barely breathing, as they watched Emory draw symbols over the area of Robert's internal organs.

Then—

"Huuh…" Emory exhaled deeply and withdrew his hand.

At that very moment, a blinding white light flashed briefly from all seven of Robert's orifices. A second later, thick, black blood began to ooze from beneath his fingernails—strange, almost unreal in appearance.

"What's happening to Grandpa?" Cassidy's voice rose in alarm as she saw his breath weaken. The hope that had only just formed in her heart faltered instantly, her face draining of color.

"He's expelling toxins," Emory answered, his tone still quiet, still steady. "Your grandfather's injuries were severe. He couldn't find the right cure, so he suppressed the damage with Glugan Fire."

"But what he didn't realize," Emory went on, "is that Glugan Fire wreaks havoc on the internal organs. When I looked inside him just now, all five organs were withered, riddled with fire poison. I had to draw it out. It was the only way to keep him alive."

As his final word fell—

Thump.

Robert's body trembled once… then stilled.

His breath vanished.

"Grandpa!!" Cassidy's scream ripped through the room.

Seeing no sign of life, she turned on Emory like a storm unleashed.

"Quack! You said he was detoxing! Then why? Why is he dead now? It was you! You killed him! If you hadn't treated him, he wouldn't have died so soon—"

Her voice cracked, and the anger gave way to something rawer. She broke down sobbing, utterly devastated.

At the same time, several bodyguards sprang into motion, surrounding Emory without hesitation. One of them stepped forward.

"Scum. Master Robert is dead because of you. It's only fair you leave your life behind in return."

"This… what is this…" Lucy stood frozen, her face pale.

Emory—she had been the one who brought him here.

And now? She was going to be implicated because of Emory's failure.

Once Cassidy was done with Emory… She had no doubt she'd be next.

Just as Lucy stood frozen in panic, unsure what to do next, Emory turned calmly to Cassidy.

"Miss Cassidy," he said, his voice composed, "is this how the Caison family treats someone who just saved a life?"

"Saved a life?" Cassidy snapped. "You killed my grandpa and now you're—"

She didn't finish her sentence.

Her words stopped short, and not just hers. Everyone around turned their eyes to Robert.

Robert, who only moments ago had shown no signs of life, was now sitting upright—color back in his face.

"What… what kind of treatment is this?" Lucy murmured, stunned. "He was dead. Dead. And now…"

She had studied alternative medicine—'look, listen, ask, and feel'—and Western diagnostics with their monitors and machines. But this? This was something else. Something beyond either world. Something unreal.

"Grandpa? You're alive?" Cassidy finally choked out. Overcome, she threw herself into her grandfather's arms, tears of relief spilling down her face.

"There, there, Cassidy," Robert murmured gently. "Don't cry."

He helped her to her feet, then turned and bowed toward Emory. "Thank you, young man. You pulled me back from the edge of death."

He'd been conscious, he explained, while Emory worked. Aware, but paralyzed, unable to move or speak.

"There's no need to thank me," Emory said, offering a faint smile. "I didn't do it for free."

Robert straightened and gave a short laugh. "Then name it. In Vermillion Delta, I have many friends. Money, status, fame, women—whatever you want, it's yours."

Emory shook his head. "I don't want any of that."

Robert paused, surprised. Before he could respond, Lucy spoke up quickly.

"Master Robert, what he really wants is a job."

"A job?" Robert blinked, not expecting that answer. Cassidy looked equally baffled.

A man with Emory's skill—any hospital would be fighting to keep him.

"It's no trouble," Robert said with a smile. "Before my mom passed, she left me a business here in Vermillion Delta. From today on, Emory, you are the new owner of Lunar Ventures."

As he spoke, he handed Emory a transfer document.

Emory didn't hesitate. He signed without a second thought.

When it was done, Cassidy stepped forward and handed him a bank card. "Dr. Emory, please accept this as my personal thanks."

Emory shook his head. "There's no need. Your grandfather already paid me."

"But… he's him, and I'm me. And besides…" She hesitated, eyes lowered. "I doubted your skill earlier. I owe you an apology."

He didn't take the card. He only smiled and turned to Robert. "Robert, may I go now and move things along at Lunar Ventures?"

"Of course," Robert nodded. "I've already informed Bobby Cowell. He'll be waiting for you at the company's lobby."

As Emory and Lucy walked away, Cassidy turned to her grandfather, troubled.

"Grandpa… why give him the Lunar Ventures? Our family owns plenty of companies in Vermillion Delta. Great-Grandma founded Lunar Ventures. It's become one of the Four Major VC Companies in Vermillion Delta. Isn't that… too much?"

Robert chuckled softly. "How could I give Emory one of our small companies? With Emory's abilities, I doubt even Lunar Ventures is worth his notice. How could I give him just anything?"

He paused, then added, "They say the world is vast. I used to think I'd seen enough in Sacholles. But now? Now I've met a true master."

"You mean… Emory has a powerful background?" Cassidy asked.

"I can't see through him," Robert said, almost to himself. "And that, my girl, is what makes him dangerous."

She hesitated. "Do you think… do you think he might be the one High Commissioner Brady is looking for?"

Robert sighed. "Who knows? That man guards his secrets like treasure. Ask him anything and he turns evasive. Always sneaking around, like a petty thief."

He narrowed his eyes, voice firm. "But whether Emory is or isn't the one Brady seeks—it doesn't matter. We must never make Emory our enemy."

"I understand, Grandpa," she said, nodding.

After leaving Crystal Baycourt, Lucy couldn't hide the look of awe in her eyes.

Emory noticed. "What is it?"

She hesitated, then told him. The Lunar Ventures he'd just inherited wasn't just some regular company. It was one of the Four Major VC Companies in the entire Vermillion Delta.

And Vermillion Delta had thirteen cities.

For Lunar Ventures to remain one of the top four, it meant deep roots and formidable power.

Even the prestigious Madison family of Goldspire, known across the region, was nothing compared to Lunar Ventures.

In that world, the Madison family was just a small fish. Lunar Ventures? A shark.

The man's voice was respectful, almost reverent. He introduced himself as Bobby Cowell, then led Emory straight to the chairman's office and handed him a thick folder. After Lillian was dragged out, the lobby finally quieted.Bobby turned to Emory, then, without a word, slapped himself hard across the face—twice. He forced a smile. "Sir, I'm truly sorry. This was my mistake. I trusted the wrong person and caused you unnecessary trouble."Emory shook his head. "Let it go. It's not your fault."He turned, about to leave Lunar Ventures, when a white-haired man in a brown suit hurried in from outside. As soon as he caught sight of Bobby, his expression shifted into one of desperation."Bobby, I need your help," he said, practically pleading. "Halstone Grand Hotel is having a little cash flow issue. Could you loan me 30 million? I promise I'll pay it back—soon. I just need a little time—""Ahem." Bobby cut him off, his tone cool. "Robin, I'm not in charge of things at Lunar Ventures anymore. If you're looking for a loan, you'll have to speak with our new chairman.""Chairman Emory?" Robin Vito blinked, glancing at Emory."That's right," Bobby confir

Oh, hey—Cora, when are you and Emory planning your wedding?"The question cut through the hum of chatter as several heads turned toward Cora."Me?" She hesitated for a second, then offered a polite smile. "I'll need to discuss it with my mom first.""Any idea where you'll hold it?"Before Cora could respond, Scarlet scoffed from across the table. "Where else could it be? Probably one of Goldspire City's cheapest motels. Let's be honest—Cora's family doesn't have any connections, and they're certainly not rolling in money. And Emory? He's a nobody from the mountains. What more can you expect? The Halstone Grand Hotel? Please. She's lucky if they even let her through the front door.""I don't need to get married at Halstone!" Cora said, lifting her chin. "A small motel is fine. As long as Emory shows u

"Cora, move aside." Helen's voice cut through the room, sharp and filled with disappointment as she glared at her daughter."I'm not moving!" Cora's eyes were red. "I want to be with Emory.""You—are you trying to drive me to an early grave?" Helen, furious, spun around and slammed the door to her bedroom.Watching the door rattle in the frame, Cora gave Emory a tired, bitter smile. "Honey, don't take what my mom said to heart.""It's fine," Emory said, shaking his head. "I've gotten used to it these past few days."He hesitated a moment, then added, "Cora, how about I go with you to the Caison residence tomorrow? I might be able to help with that international music academy partnership."He had saved Robert's life—he figured Cassidy would give him that much courtesy."No need, sweetheart. You just started your new job today. You'll be swamped tomorrow and the next. I can handle going to Crystal Baycourt by myself. Don't worry—your wife is a tough cookie," she said with a wink, g

"What? Cassidy is expecting Cora? That's impossible."Scarlet stared at the security guard in stunned disbelief. Her voice trembled with confusion, eyes wide as the words sank in.Cassidy? Of all people? She couldn't process it. The Caison family stood at the very top of the social ladder—untouchable, unimaginable. And Cora? She was nothing. Just an ordinary woman, barely scraping by. By all logic, the two should never have crossed paths. But right before her eyes, Cora was being ushered in like an honored guest, vanishing into the distance.Something snapped in Scarlet's mind. She blinked, then darted forward, calling out, "Wait!"A guard stepped in to block her path. "I'm sorry, miss. Crystal Baycourt isn't accepting guests today.""I'm her cousin!" "Scarlet, I heard you sealed the deal with the Caison family in Nambern on the international music academy project?"Inside the sleek offices of Scarlet Media, Sylas—dressed in a tailored suit, every bit the polished gentleman—had sought her out."Sylas, your sources are pretty sharp, huh?" Scarlet's tone was flat, her expression clouded."I might miss a few things when it comes to others," he said with an easy smile, "but not when it's you. You're the woman I've been chasing."Then, narrowing his eyes, he added, "But who got under your skin? You just landed a major deal with the Caison family. Shouldn't you be over the moon?""Don't even bring it up. It's that Cora."As she spoke, she pulled out the contract from the Caison family and handed it to him. "See for yourself.""Huh? Why is Cora's name on this contract too?" Sylas looked genuinely surprised. Then he gave her a knowing look. "Let me guess—you don't want to share the credit with her.""No kidding. By the time Cora returned home, the sky was already dark. She didn't dare tell Emory or her mother what had happened that day. Quietly, she slipped into her room and cried alone. The next morning, Helen finally noticed her daughter's red, swollen eyes. She rushed over in concern."Cora, what happened to your eyes? Were you crying? Tell me—did that country bumpkin Emory bully you again? I've told you a hundred times, divorce him. You—""Mom, it's not about Emory."Cora paused. The bitterness in her chest had been building all night, and now she couldn't hold it in anymore. So she told her mother everything that had happened the day before. When Helen heard that Scarlet had stolen her daughter's credit for the partnership, her anger erupted like fire through dry grass."That wretched Scarlet! She's gone too far! That international music academy deal—half of it is your doing! She…"The more she spoke, the more furious she became. In the end, she grabbed Cora's hand. "Come on, Cora,

'Could it be?' she wondered. 'Does Emory actually know the Caison family? Did I just stumble on a goldmine?'"Master Quentin, you're not joking, are you? The Caison family really said they would only work with Cora?"Scarlet finally snapped out of it, though her voice was tight with frustration. She pulled out a document. "But I signed the contract for the International Music Academy. Right here. My name's on it. How could the Caison family recognize only Cora and not me?"Quentin cast her a frosty glance. "So you're saying I lied to you?""N-no! That's not what I meant, I just…"Smack.Madeline slapped her across the face, hard."Hmph! Scarlet, you've got the nerve to talk about signing?" she snapped. "Didn't Cora sign that contract too? Or are you trying to

After the dinner at Madison estate, Cora left with Emory. After they were gone, Alice strolled over to Scarlet with a smile. "Scarlet, aren't you going to help Cora find Linda's granddaughter?"Earlier during dinner, Cora had explained the complications holding up construction in Everdeen Village. Without locating Linda's granddaughter, the international music academy project couldn't move forward."Me? Why would I help Cora?" Scarlet's lips curled in a cold smirk. "It's not like the Caison family's working with me. Besides, I'm honestly curious—how long do you think they'll tolerate Cora's delays? I wouldn't be surprised if the Caison family loses their patience.""You mean, you don't think she'll find Linda's granddaughter?" Alice asked, catching the implication."Hmph. It's not easy to find a girl who's been missing for ten years." Scarlet shook her head, voice heavy with disdain. "Does Cora really think she can keep pulling off miracles?""You've got a point." Alice nodded. "L

But I—""I knew you weren't!" Ellen cut him off before he could finish. "You're just some country bumpkin from the mountains. What do you know about mystic arts? Do you have any idea how expensive the training is? You couldn't even afford a proper betrothal gift for Cora—how on earth would you pay for lessons?"She straightened up, her voice rising with self-righteous superiority. "And let me remind you—Derrick's backed by Jason Eli, the most dangerous man in Goldspire's underworld. Jason recently reached the level just below Master Quentin himself. Emory offered a faint smile. "Unless, of course, you're planning to bulldoze Linda's house for your international music academy?""I don't want to do that," Cora said, her voice soft but firm. Linda spoke with a bitter edge to her voice, a mix of sorrow and self-mockery bleeding through every word."It's really nothing, Linda," Cora said softly, offering a gentle smile that felt like a breeze in spring. "Helping you… helps me too."Emory, standing nearby, watched his wife chatting with the old woman and frowned. "Cora, what's going on? What do you mean, helping yourself? And who was that woman earlier?""That was Denise," Cora replied. "She was adopted by Linda, but she's never supported her—not even once. All she does is wish for Linda to die so she can take her house and money. A complete ingrate."Her anger rose as she continued. "If Denise really managed to snatch the house, she'd definitely use it to blackmail the Madison family for a cut of the relocation compensation from Everdeen Village. That's why I stepped in, and… things got heated.""I see," Emory said quietly, watching his wife stand up for the old woman. "What about Linda's other family? No one else around

When Emory arrived at Everdeen Village, the first thing he saw was Helen arguing heatedly with a flashy young woman dressed to the nines. Nearby, Cora sat on the ground, wiping tears from her eyes."Cora, Helen, what happened?" Emory walked up, his voice calm but concerned. Before Cora could answer, Helen snapped, pointing a trembling finger at the woman. "What gives you the right to hit my daughter?"The young woman didn't flinch. She crossed her arms and sneered. "So what if I hit her? She stuck her nose where it didn't belong.""You—!"Helen looked ready to lash out, but Cora gently tugged at Helen's arm and shook her head. "Let it go, Mom. Let her leave.""You still not gone?" Helen barked, turning back to the woman. The woman glared at Cora as she turned to leave. "Let me tell you something, Cora. Linda's house, her money—it's all mine now. I don't respect elders. So what? What can you do about it? You wanna play hero again next time?" she sneered. "I'll beat you to death."

Jason wore a black jacket, and his body—solid with bronzed muscle—looked built for war."You're the new chairman of Lunar Ventures, Emory Belen?" Jason's hawk-like eyes bored into him."I am," Emory replied calmly. "What do you want?""I want your company to find someone for me," Jason said, all confidence. "Do the job, and I'll pay you seven million."He slid a photograph across the table. It showed a girl, no older than sixteen or seventeen."Not interested," Emory said without glancing at the picture.Jason's smile didn't falter, but his voice darkened. "You might want to reconsider, Emory. I have a feeling we'll be working together a lot in Goldspire in the future."As he spoke, an invisible force surged from Jason, exploding the table and chairs in front of him into splinters.Bobb

When the meeting finally wrapped up, Cora sought out Scarlet in private."What do you want?" Scarlet arched a brow, glancing at her with a smirk that carried more arrogance than curiosity."Scarlet, do you know why Linda refuses to move?" Cora asked, genuinely curious. The compensation their family had offered was generous—by any measure, Linda shouldn't still be clinging to that dilapidated house in Everdeen Village."Of course I know why." Scarlet's smile deepened with mischief. "But why would I tell you?"Cora was at a loss for words."Cora, the Caisons handed you the international music academy project. That means it's your responsibility. Don't come running to me every time you hit a wall. Why should I help you? Why don't you ask Emory for his help?" Her voice dripped with mockery.
