Chapter 12

Author: Ebon Luna
After parting ways with Lucy, Emory made his way to Lunar Ventures.

Located in the heart of Goldspire City, Lunar Ventures occupied hundreds of acres and boasted a seventy-story office tower, a landmark in the city skyline.

Standing outside the towering building was a middle-aged man in a crisp white suit, a Rolex glinting on his wrist. He waited with practiced politeness, posture straight, eyes scanning the entrance.

As soon as he spotted Emory approaching, he stepped forward eagerly. "Mr. Emory Belen?"

"That's me," Emory replied with a nod.

"Please, come in. Master Robert has instructed us—starting today, you're the new Chairman of Lunar Ventures." The man's voice was respectful, almost reverent.

He introduced himself as Bobby Cowell, then led Emory straight to the chairman's office and handed him a thick folder. "Mr. Emory, this contains information on all our current assets and projects under Lunar Ventures."

He produced a business card next. "And from now on, I'll be your personal assistant. My phone's on twenty-four seven. Anything you need—"

Emory cut him off, his tone calm but cool. "I understand. You may go."

Once Bobby left, Emory took a few minutes to familiarize himself with the new environment. Then he planned to head home and let Helen know he'd found a job.

But just as he stepped out of the office building, someone crossed his path. Someone tall, flashy, and snobby.

Lillian—Scarlet's friend—was strutting toward him in heels that clicked like gunfire against marble. She eyed him with a venomous smirk.

"Well, if it isn't the country bumpkin," she sneered. "What's wrong? Done hunting rabbits in the mountains? What business do you have at Lunar Ventures?"

Emory's expression didn't waver. "I'm here to work. Problem?"

Lillian blinked, then burst out laughing. "Work? You? Emory, are you trying to kill me with laughter? You think Lunar Ventures is some local charity shelter?"

She stepped closer, practically bouncing with derision. "Let me tell you something—Lunar Ventures is one of the top four VC companies in the entire Vermillion Delta. Even the janitors here have Ivy League degrees. And you? A backwater peasant? You think you can work here? You must be dreaming."

She tossed her empty Starbucks cup at his feet with a flick of her wrist. "Tell you what, since Scarlet dumped you so publicly, I'll do you a favor. Pick that cup up and maybe sell it for spare change. Someone like you is only good for sweeping streets and digging through garbage."

Emory's eyes chilled. "Lillian, what have I ever done to you? Why do you feel the need to humiliate me?"

"Oh, I'm humiliating you because you deserve it." Her voice rose, shrill and sharp. "You're a pitiful little ugly duckling pretending to be a swan. A nobody from the mountains, thinking you could ever be good enough for someone like Scarlet? Don't make me laugh."

Emory's voice came low and steady. "Whether I'm good enough or not isn't for you to decide. The engagement was arranged by Scarlet's grandfather. I honored that. And starting tomorrow, Lillian—you no longer work at Lunar Ventures. This company doesn't need women like you, who look down on others and judge them by appearances."

Lillian froze. Then she let out a scoff. "Emory, are you role-playing again? Who do you think you are to fire me? The chairman?"

She laughed, full of disdain. "If you were really so powerful, why would Scarlet turn you down? You think you can fool me with that tough guy act? Please—you're just a peasant playing pretend."

Just as she was speaking, Bobby approached from a distance.

"Mr. Bobby!"

The sarcasm and arrogance vanished from Lillian's face the moment she saw him. She quickly stepped forward, her expression softening as she playfully twirled a strand of hair. "Mr. Bobby, are you free tonight? I know this great little bar…"

As she spoke, she edged closer to him, her body pressing against his arm.

But Bobby gently pushed her away and asked, genuinely curious, "Lillian, you know Mr. Emory?"

"Yes, I know him." Lillian responded breezily. "He's just some bumpkin from—"

She didn't get to finish.

Bobby smiled. "Lillian, you've done pretty well at Lunar Ventures lately. I was thinking of promoting you to HR manager. How do you feel about that?"

"Really?" Her eyes lit up instantly.

HR manager—one of the core leadership positions in the company. No joke.

After today, she'd be on an entirely new level. Even Scarlet would have to look up to her.

"A gentleman never goes back on his word," Bobby said. "Go see Claymon later and complete the paperwork."

The promotion wasn't for Lillian's sake, of course. It was because of Emory.

After all, Emory was the newly appointed chairman, appointed by Robert himself. If Bobby could win Emory's favor, perhaps one day, he might find himself tied to the powerful Caison family. That would be the real jackpot.

"Thank you, Mr. Bobby! Thank you so much! I promise I'll work hard and live up to your expectations."

Then, she turned, cocking a brow at Emory with renewed disdain.

"Emory, why are you still hanging around here like a stray? Didn't I tell you to get lost? I'm the HR manager now. If I don't give the green light, no one at Lunar Ventures will hire you. You're better off picking up trash somewhere!"

The words had barely left her mouth when Bobby froze.

Before he could say anything, Emory's voice cut through the air, cold and low. "Bobby, what are you doing? I was just about to fire Lillian, and now you're promoting her? Are you trying to challenge me?"

"N-no, Sir, no! It's a misunderstanding. I thought she was a friend of yours!"

With a thud, Bobby dropped to his knees, panic taking over. He slapped Lillian across the face. "You little bitch! How dare you call Chairman Emory a stray and tell him to get lost? Who the hell do you think you are?!"

Then he barked to the side, "Guards, get over here! Wipe that filthy mouth of hers clean. How dare she insult our chairman?!"

The command barely left his lips before a group of security guards rushed over.

Without hesitation, they raised their hands.

Smack! Smack!

Lillian's mouth filled with blood. She stared, dazed. "M-Mr. Bobby… did you say Emory is the chairman of Lunar Ventures?"

Her pupils constricted. She couldn't believe what she was hearing.

Emory? That backwater nobody? He was the chairman?

"Are you fucking deaf?" Bobby roared. "If Mr. Emory isn't the chairman, then who is? You?"

He kicked her hard in the stomach, sending her to the ground.

"Get this narrow-minded fool out of my sight. If she ever dares set foot in Lunar again, I'll make sure none of you live it down."

"No—please! Mr. Bobby, I'm begging you, don't fire me! I can't lose this job!"

She clung to Bobby's leg, sobbing.

But he didn't even glance at her.

Desperate, Lillian turned to Emory, her voice trembling. "Mr. Emory… I was wrong. I shouldn't have humiliated you. Please, I'm begging you. Don't fire me. Without this job, I'm as good as dead. My father… he crossed the wrong people years ago. The only reason they haven't come after us is because they're afraid of Lunar Ventures…"

Emory's face was stone. "Lillian, that sounds like a 'you' problem. Whatever happens to you now—you brought it on yourself."

"No! No, I didn't mean to—I just got carried away!" she pleaded. "Mr. Emory, please, if you forgive me just this once, I'll do anything… I—I'm good, really. I'll be good. I can stay with you tonight if you want. My figure… my legs—"

Crack!

Another vicious kick from Bobby landed squarely in her ribs. "Filthy tramp! You think you're good enough for the chairman? Have you looked into a mirror? You think a man like him has to stoop to your level? He could have any woman he wants in Vermillion Delta!"

"I… I…"

Tears spilled down her face as she crawled on the floor.

"I'm really sorry. I'll never judge people like that again. I'll clean toilets if you let me stay. I'll—"

"Get her out!" Bobby barked.

He didn't even bother looking at her.

As the guards dragged her toward the exit, Lillian let out a wail of despair.

"No! I don't want to leave!"

Then her voice turned to a screech, raw with hatred.

"Scarlet! You lying bitch! You told me Emory wasn't good enough for you—but he's the chairman of Lunar Ventures! I hate you! You ruined my life, you wretched woman!"

After Lillian was dragged out, the lobby finally quieted.Bobby turned to Emory, then, without a word, slapped himself hard across the face—twice. He forced a smile. "Sir, I'm truly sorry. This was my mistake. I trusted the wrong person and caused you unnecessary trouble."Emory shook his head. "Let it go. It's not your fault."He turned, about to leave Lunar Ventures, when a white-haired man in a brown suit hurried in from outside. As soon as he caught sight of Bobby, his expression shifted into one of desperation."Bobby, I need your help," he said, practically pleading. "Halstone Grand Hotel is having a little cash flow issue. Could you loan me 30 million? I promise I'll pay it back—soon. I just need a little time—""Ahem." Bobby cut him off, his tone cool. "Robin, I'm not in charge of things at Lunar Ventures anymore. If you're looking for a loan, you'll have to speak with our new chairman.""Chairman Emory?" Robin Vito blinked, glancing at Emory."That's right," Bobby confir

She hesitated for a second, then offered a polite smile. "I'll need to discuss it with my mom first.""Any idea where you'll hold it?"Before Cora could respond, Scarlet scoffed from across the table. "Where else could it be? Probably one of Goldspire City's cheapest motels. Let's be honest—Cora's family doesn't have any connections, and they're certainly not rolling in money. And Emory? He's a nobody from the mountains. What more can you expect? The Halstone Grand Hotel? Please. She's lucky if they even let her through the front door.""I don't need to get married at Halstone!" Cora said, lifting her chin. "A small motel is fine. As long as Emory shows u

"Cora, move aside." Helen's voice cut through the room, sharp and filled with disappointment as she glared at her daughter."I'm not moving!" Cora's eyes were red. "I want to be with Emory.""You—are you trying to drive me to an early grave?" Helen, furious, spun around and slammed the door to her bedroom.Watching the door rattle in the frame, Cora gave Emory a tired, bitter smile. "Honey, don't take what my mom said to heart.""It's fine," Emory said, shaking his head. "I've gotten used to it these past few days."He hesitated a moment, then added, "Cora, how about I go with you to the Caison residence tomorrow? I might be able to help with that international music academy partnership."He had saved Robert's life—he figured Cassidy would give him that much courtesy."No need, sweetheart. You just started your new job today. You'll be swamped tomorrow and the next. I can handle going to Crystal Baycourt by myself. Don't worry—your wife is a tough cookie," she said with a wink, g

"What? Cassidy is expecting Cora? That's impossible."Scarlet stared at the security guard in stunned disbelief. Her voice trembled with confusion, eyes wide as the words sank in.Cassidy? Of all people? She couldn't process it. The Caison family stood at the very top of the social ladder—untouchable, unimaginable. And Cora? She was nothing. Just an ordinary woman, barely scraping by. By all logic, the two should never have crossed paths. But right before her eyes, Cora was being ushered in like an honored guest, vanishing into the distance.Something snapped in Scarlet's mind. She blinked, then darted forward, calling out, "Wait!"A guard stepped in to block her path. "I'm sorry, miss. Crystal Baycourt isn't accepting guests today.""I'm her cousin!" Scarlet blurted, pointing at Cora's back. "We came together! Cora! Wait!"Cora stopped. "Scarlet, I heard you sealed the deal with the Caison family in Nambern on the international music academy project?"Inside the sleek offices of Scarlet Media, Sylas—dressed in a tailored suit, every bit the polished gentleman—had sought her out."Sylas, your sources are pretty sharp, huh?" Scarlet's tone was flat, her expression clouded."I might miss a few things when it comes to others," he said with an easy smile, "but not when it's you. You're the woman I've been chasing."Then, narrowing his eyes, he added, "But who got under your skin? You just landed a major deal with the Caison family. Shouldn't you be over the moon?""Don't even bring it up. It's that Cora."As she spoke, she pulled out the contract from the Caison family and handed it to him. "See for yourself.""Huh? Why is Cora's name on this contract too?" Sylas looked genuinely surprised. Then he gave her a knowing look. "Let me guess—you don't want to share the credit with her.""No kidding. By the time Cora returned home, the sky was already dark. She didn't dare tell Emory or her mother what had happened that day. Quietly, she slipped into her room and cried alone. The next morning, Helen finally noticed her daughter's red, swollen eyes. She rushed over in concern."Cora, what happened to your eyes? Were you crying? Tell me—did that country bumpkin Emory bully you again? I've told you a hundred times, divorce him. You—""Mom, it's not about Emory."Cora paused. The bitterness in her chest had been building all night, and now she couldn't hold it in anymore. So she told her mother everything that had happened the day before. When Helen heard that Scarlet had stolen her daughter's credit for the partnership, her anger erupted like fire through dry grass."That wretched Scarlet! She's gone too far! That international music academy deal—half of it is your doing! She…"The more she spoke, the more furious she became. In the end, she grabbed Cora's hand. "Come on, Cora,

"Make the Madison family… disappear?"The smile on Scarlet's face faded the instant she heard Quentin's words.Helen stood frozen, her mouth hanging open in shock. As for Cora, she turned to Emory, disbelief in her eyes. 'Could it be?' she wondered. 'Does Emory actually know the Caison family? Did I just stumble on a goldmine?'"Master Quentin, you're not joking, are you? The Caison family really said they would only work with Cora?"Scarlet finally snapped out of it, though her voice was tight with frustration. She pulled out a document. "But I signed the contract for the International Music Academy. Right here. My name's on it. How could the Caison family recognize only Cora and not me?"Quentin cast her a frosty glance. "So you're saying I lied to you?""N-no! That's not what I meant, I just…"Smack.Madeline slapped her across the face, hard."Hmph! Scarlet, you've got the nerve to talk about signing?" she snapped. "Scarlet? Did you just say Aaron went to Sacholles to be Cassidy's sparring partner?"The moment Scarlet mentioned Aaron, Madeline's eyes reddened ever so slightly.Among all her children, Aaron had shown the greatest talent for mystic arts. At a young age, he had already reached the level of a sixth-grade practitioner. But it was all wasted. He died in Sacholles. To this day, no one knew the cause."That's right, Grandma," Scarlet nodded. "Cassidy told me that herself.""Did she mention how Aaron died?" Madeline asked again, her voice tight with grief."No," Scarlet said with regret. "She didn't."Hearing Scarlet's words, Cora felt a strange moment of clarity. Maybe... maybe Scarlet was right. Maybe Cassidy had chosen her to oversee the international music academy project purely out of sympathy. After all, if Emory really had powerful ties to the Caison family, why would he marry someone as ordinary as her?…After leaving the Madison residence, Cora brought Emory to Rose Vi

After the dinner at Madison estate, Cora left with Emory. After they were gone, Alice strolled over to Scarlet with a smile. "Scarlet, aren't you going to help Cora find Linda's granddaughter?"Earlier during dinner, Cora had explained the complications holding up construction in Everdeen Village. Without locating Linda's granddaughter, the international music academy project couldn't move forward."Me? Why would I help Cora?" Scarlet's lips curled in a cold smirk. "It's not like the Caison family's working with me. Besides, I'm honestly curious—how long do you think they'll tolerate Cora's delays? I wouldn't be surprised if the Caison family loses their patience.""You mean, you don't think she'll find Linda's granddaughter?" Alice asked, catching the implication."Hmph. It's not easy to find a girl who's been missing for ten years." Scarlet shook her head, voice heavy with disdain. "Does Cora really think she can keep pulling off miracles?""You've got a point." Emory offered a faint smile. "Unless, of course, you're planning to bulldoze Linda's house for your international music academy?""I don't want to do that," Cora said, her voice soft but firm. Linda spoke with a bitter edge to her voice, a mix of sorrow and self-mockery bleeding through every word."It's really nothing, Linda," Cora said softly, offering a gentle smile that felt like a breeze in spring. "Helping you… helps me too."Emory, standing nearby, watched his wife chatting with the old woman and frowned. "Cora, what's going on? What do you mean, helping yourself? And who was that woman earlier?""That was Denise," Cora replied. "She was adopted by Linda, but she's never supported her—not even once. All she does is wish for Linda to die so she can take her house and money. A complete ingrate."Her anger rose as she continued. "If Denise really managed to snatch the house, she'd definitely use it to blackmail the Madison family for a cut of the relocation compensation from Everdeen Village. That's why I stepped in, and… things got heated.""I see," Emory said quietly, watching his wife stand up for the old woman. "What about Linda's other family? No one else around

When Emory arrived at Everdeen Village, the first thing he saw was Helen arguing heatedly with a flashy young woman dressed to the nines. Nearby, Cora sat on the ground, wiping tears from her eyes."Cora, Helen, what happened?" Emory walked up, his voice calm but concerned. Before Cora could answer, Helen snapped, pointing a trembling finger at the woman. "What gives you the right to hit my daughter?"The young woman didn't flinch. She crossed her arms and sneered. "So what if I hit her? She stuck her nose where it didn't belong.""You—!"Helen looked ready to lash out, but Cora gently tugged at Helen's arm and shook her head. "Let it go, Mom. Let her leave.""You still not gone?" Helen barked, turning back to the woman. The woman glared at Cora as she turned to leave. "Let me tell you something, Cora. Linda's house, her money—it's all mine now. I don't respect elders. So what? What can you do about it? You wanna play hero again next time?" she sneered. "I'll beat you to death."

Jason wore a black jacket, and his body—solid with bronzed muscle—looked built for war."You're the new chairman of Lunar Ventures, Emory Belen?" Jason's hawk-like eyes bored into him."I am," Emory replied calmly. "What do you want?""I want your company to find someone for me," Jason said, all confidence. "Do the job, and I'll pay you seven million."He slid a photograph across the table. It showed a girl, no older than sixteen or seventeen."Not interested," Emory said without glancing at the picture.Jason's smile didn't falter, but his voice darkened. "You might want to reconsider, Emory. I have a feeling we'll be working together a lot in Goldspire in the future."As he spoke, an invisible force surged from Jason, exploding the table and chairs in front of him into splinters.Bobb

When the meeting finally wrapped up, Cora sought out Scarlet in private."What do you want?" Scarlet arched a brow, glancing at her with a smirk that carried more arrogance than curiosity."Scarlet, do you know why Linda refuses to move?" Scarlet's smile deepened with mischief. "But why would I tell you?"Cora was at a loss for words."Cora, the Caisons handed you the international music academy project. That means it's your responsibility. Don't come running to me every time you hit a wall. Why should I help you? Why don't you ask Emory for his help?" Her voice dripped with mockery.
