Chapter 7

작가: Ebon Luna
Goldspire City, Hudds Ventures.

"Dad, something's happened to the Blackwell Enterprises." Lucy stood in front of Hudds, her expression complicated.

"What happened?" Darian's question came instinctively.

"It's… Michelle. Her father—he passed away. Suddenly."

As Lucy spoke, she couldn't help but recall what Emory had once said at Dr. Ian's clinic.

"What? Clark's dead?" Darian was stunned, unable to process it right away.

"The autopsy report says it was due to cold exposure…" Her voice trailed off, hesitant.

"Cold exposure?"

Darian fell into silence.

Because he remembered—

Back at the clinic, Dr. Ian had clearly treated Clark Blackwell's condition. If that were true, how could he die from something as mundane as cold?

"Dad, do you think… maybe we really did meet a miracle doctor?"

After a brief pause, Lucy's voice grew steadier, tinged with awe. "Maybe it wasn't just cold. Maybe… it was some kind of cold poison invading your system."

"…Hmm." Darian considered her words, his face growing serious.

"Lucy," he said finally, "Come with me. We're going to the hospital. I want to get checked."

When the test results came back, both father and daughter were stunned.

The chronic cold condition that had plagued Darian's body was gone.

"Dad, he's real! He really is a miracle doctor!" Lucy could hardly contain her excitement. "I knew I wasn't wrong. And that ridiculous Michelle kept calling him a fraud. Serves her right that her father—"

"Enough." Darian cut her off, voice stern. "Don't gloat."

But inside, he was already thinking about how he could build a connection with someone like Emory.

Elsewhere.

When Emory returned to Dr. Ian's clinic, Cora had already left with Helen.

He had just spent thirty thousand to buy the Iris Nightshade. He planned to head home and begin treating his wife's legs.

But just then, trouble broke out at the clinic.

"Dr. Ian! You fraud! You said you cured my father! Then why—why did he die from cold exposure?! Get out here, Dr. Ian!" A woman's scream rang out, raw and unhinged.

Emory turned, his gaze drawn toward the commotion.

And there, kneeling in front of the clinic doors in mourning garb, was Michelle, screaming through tears.

He let out a soft sigh.

'What's done is done,' he thought, and began to turn away.

But Michelle saw him.

"Wait! You—stop right there!"

She sprinted toward him like someone on the edge, her eyes bloodshot, voice breaking. "Why didn't you save my father? Why?!"

Emory looked at her calmly.

"You didn't believe in me," he said. "So how could I have saved him? In your eyes, I was nothing but a fraud."

"I… I…" Her mouth opened, but no words came.

Michelle finally dropped into a crouch, her whole body trembling as she choked back sobs.

Regret.

Frustration.

But… there was no medicine for what she needed now.

Half an hour later, Emory returned to Cora's home.

"You're back," Cora said softly, her eyes warm as she looked at him. "Mom has calmed down from what happened at the clinic. She even bought pork ribs—we're having braised ribs for dinner."

"Hmph. I didn't buy any for Emory," Helen said coldly. "Emory, we don't support freeloaders in this house. You've married into our family, so when are you planning to get a job? Didn't you claim you know medicine? Or do you really expect Cora to support you for the rest of her life?"

"I..." Emory started to say he'd begin job hunting tomorrow, but before he could finish, Cora's phone rang.

"What? Aunt Hilda was in a car accident? Is it serious? Okay, I understand. We'll come right away."

She hung up and turned quickly to Helen. "Mom, it's Aunt Hilda—she's been in an accident."

"Your Aunt Hilda? Hilda Madison? Isn't she abroad?"

Helen was stunned.

"She came back today with Alice," Cora explained while putting on her coat. "Emory, come with us to the hospital. When I was little, Aunt Hilda took good care of me. Now that she's hurt, I have to see her."

"Of course."

When they arrived at Goldspire City Hospital, several members of the Madison family were gathered around a hospital bed, their expressions filled with worry.

"Mom, what did the doctor say? Will I ever walk again?" On the bed, Hilda was suffering from multiple compound fractures in both legs. She looked up at Madeline with desperation in her voice. "I don't want to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair. I don't want to be disabled."

"Hilda... The doctors here said your legs are beyond saving. There's no way to fully recover—unless you use prosthetics."

Madeline looked at her paralyzed daughter, her heart breaking. Today was supposed to be a family reunion. No one had expected something like this to happen.

"Prosthetics? No! I don't want prosthetics! I just want to be normal again—I don't want that..." Hilda began to cry.

Watching from beside Emory, Cora felt a deep sympathy rise within her. As someone living with a disability herself, she understood better than anyone the crushing weight of that despair.

"There is another way. Aside from prosthetics... there is something else that could heal Aunt Hilda," Emory said quietly, breaking his silence.

"Emory! Who asked you to speak?" Scarlet snapped, glaring at him with obvious disdain.

"Who is he?" the others murmured, unfamiliar with Emory.

"He's Cora's husband," Scarlet replied casually. "Emory. A bumpkin from the mountains."

She left out the part where she had once been engaged to him.

"Cora's husband?" Hilda looked Emory over, then asked with a glimmer of hope, "Emory, you said there's another way to heal me. What is it?"

"This." Emory pulled out the Iris Nightshade he had purchased from Dr. Ian's clinic.

Not only could the Iris Nightshade get rid of the Paralies parasites in Cora's body—it had the power to heal disabilities and fractures of all kinds.

"You're saying this... can fix my legs?" Hilda froze, incredulous.

The next second, Scarlet burst out laughing. "Emory, are you trying to be funny again? You couldn't even treat Cora, and now you want to scam Aunt Hilda? You don't even have a medical license! Can you stop embarrassing yourself?"

"Enough, Emory! This is a hospital, not a stage for your nonsense," another family member snapped.

When they heard he didn't have a license, any remaining trust evaporated. The hope on Hilda's face hardened into scorn.

"You're disgusting, Emory. Who uses a herb to treat a disability? If this thing really works, why haven't you used it on Cora? What—am I your guinea pig now?"

She turned her anger on Cora. "And you—why would you marry a con artist like this? Were there no real men left in Goldspire?"

Faced with Hilda's tirade, Cora blushed and stammered, "Aunt Hilda! Emory isn't a con artist! Maybe... maybe he was just trying to comfort you…"

In that moment, seeing the herb in Emory's hands, even Cora began to waver. Maybe he really didn't know medicine. Maybe all his talk about curing her was just an attempt to ease her pain.

Because if Emory truly were a brilliant doctor, why would he marry a disabled woman like her?

"I don't need his comfort—and he's not qualified to give it," Hilda said coldly.

"Emory, just put your silly herb away," Scarlet mocked. "A hillbilly like you coming to the city to make a fool of yourself... You don't know medicine. Stop pretending you're something you're not."

"Who said I don't know medicine?" Emory's voice turned sharp, a faint sneer tugging at his lips. "Watch closely. I'll cure Cora right now—so you can all stop judging me."

With that, he crushed the Iris Nightshade in his hand.

Drip. Drip.

Clear liquid began to fall from the petals of the herb, and Emory carefully caught it in a crystal glass.

Before long, he had filled two glasses. The herb itself, having given all its essence, began to wither and curl in his hands.

"Didn't you say you were going to cure Cora's legs?" Scarlet scoffed. "What are you messing with a herb for? Getting nervous now? You're all show, no substance. So what if you're a national-level archer? You still aren't good enough for me."

Emory ignored her completely.

He gently poured one of the glasses of the liquid onto Cora's legs.

Then, turning to Hilda, he placed the second glass before her.

"Aunt Hilda," he said calmly, "for the kindness you showed Cora when she was young, this glass is for you. It can heal your legs. Whether you use it or not…"

Crash.

Before he could finish, Hilda swatted the glass off the table.

The crystal shattered on the floor.

"This worthless crap? You think it can heal me? Do you take me for an idiot, like Cora?"

Watching the Iris Nightshade juices seep into the ground, Emory just shook his head and sighed, saying nothing. It was Cora, sitting in her wheelchair, who spoke up for him. "Aunt Hilda, even if you don't believe Emory, you didn't have to smash the glass like that…""That's enough, Cora. Shut your mouth," Hilda cut her off coldly. "Look at you—you're crippled yourself, and you're still defending this con man?"She turned her glare toward Helen next. "Helen! Can't you keep your son-in-law in check? Why are you letting him cause a scene in the hospital?""Emory!" Helen exploded, her voice sharp and angry. "If you say one more word, get out of my house!"She couldn't vent her frustration on the Madison family, so she poured it all onto Emory.Inside, though, she was burning with resentment. How did her daughter end up marrying such a loud-mouthed hillbilly?"Mom, stop yelling at Emory. He meant well." Cora spoke up, going against her mother."Well? Ha! I think he's up to no good,"

"What? Master Quentin, are you… are you serious? Alright. I understand."When Madeline hung up the phone, every pair of eyes in the room turned toward her."Mom, what did Master Quentin call about?"She drew a long breath, steadying the emotion in her voice. "Do you remember how the Caison family from Nambern was planning to invest in an international music academy in Vermillion Delta?"Everyone nodded."Well, Master Quentin just informed me—the representative from the Caison family is Robert Caison."At the mention of that name, her tone shifted, carrying a weight of reverence."What? Robert? The legendary Aetherlord?""He's one of the most powerful people in Sacholles, and he is coming to Vermillion Delta?""I heard Robert suffered a serious injury years ago. They said he wouldn't live past sixty. Maybe he's here to return to his roots. His mother was from Vermillion Delta, after all."As hushed murmurs filled the room, Madeline's voice cut through them like a blade. "Silenc

In the tranquil courtyard of Crystal Baycourt, an old man wrapped in a white mink coat sat playing chess with a young girl in a teal-blue tunic. She looked about eighteen or nineteen, ponytail tied high. She looked lively and mischievous."Grandpa, you've lost again," Cassidy Caison said, placing a white piece on the board. She stuck out her tongue playfully. "You're so bad at this—can't even win a single game against me.""Maybe it's because I'm getting old," Robert replied, eyes drifting to the black piece in his hand, gaze lost in memories long gone."You're only fifty-nine," she retorted. "That's not old at all."Just as her voice faded, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed from the courtyard behind them. A servant's voice followed, "Ms. Cassidy, Scarlet Madison of the Madison family has come to visit.""Hm?"Cassidy looked up at the woman walking toward them. She was elegant, with a sultry charm that turned heads. Cassidy's face remained neutral."What do you want, Ms.

"Grandpa…" Cassidy choked out a sob the moment she saw Robert open one eye. "You're finally awake. I thought—I thought I'd never see you again…"But Emory shook his head slowly."He's not awake," he said quietly. "This is just the final flare of light before the flame goes out.""The final flare?" Cassidy's voice trembled. "Can he still be saved?""He can," Emory replied, nodding with calm certainty."Then I'm counting on you, Doctor."Something in the way he said it—steady, unrushed—allowed a fragile hope to stir in Cassidy's chest.Time passed. One minute. Then another. Ten minutes slipped by.Neither Cassidy nor Lucy dared make a sound. The two women stood still, barely breathing, as they watched Emory draw symbols over the area of Robert's internal organs. Then—"Huuh…" Emory exhaled deeply and withdrew his hand.At that very moment, a blinding white light flashed briefly from all seven of Robert's orifices. A second later, thick, black blood began to ooze from beneath h

After parting ways with Lucy, Emory made his way to Lunar Ventures.Located in the heart of Goldspire City, Lunar Ventures occupied hundreds of acres and boasted a seventy-story office tower, a landmark in the city skyline.Standing outside the towering building was a middle-aged man in a crisp white suit, a Rolex glinting on his wrist. He waited with practiced politeness, posture straight, eyes scanning the entrance. As soon as he spotted Emory approaching, he stepped forward eagerly. "Mr. Emory Belen?""That's me," Emory replied with a nod."Please, come in. Master Robert has instructed us—starting today, you're the new Chairman of Lunar Ventures." The man's voice was respectful, almost reverent. He introduced himself as Bobby Cowell, then led Emory straight to the chairman's office and handed him a thick folder. "Mr. Emory, this contains information on all our current assets and projects under Lunar Ventures."He produced a business card next. "And from now on, I'll be your pe

After Lillian was dragged out, the lobby finally quieted.Bobby turned to Emory, then, without a word, slapped himself hard across the face—twice. He forced a smile. "Sir, I'm truly sorry. This was my mistake. I trusted the wrong person and caused you unnecessary trouble."Emory shook his head. "Let it go. It's not your fault."He turned, about to leave Lunar Ventures, when a white-haired man in a brown suit hurried in from outside. As soon as he caught sight of Bobby, his expression shifted into one of desperation."Bobby, I need your help," he said, practically pleading. "Halstone Grand Hotel is having a little cash flow issue. Could you loan me 30 million? I promise I'll pay it back—soon. I just need a little time—""Ahem." Bobby cut him off, his tone cool. "Robin, I'm not in charge of things at Lunar Ventures anymore. If you're looking for a loan, you'll have to speak with our new chairman.""Chairman Emory?" Robin Vito blinked, glancing at Emory."That's right," Bobby confir

"I'm so jealous of Alice. She's actually getting married at the Halstone Grand Hotel.""If that were me, I'd be over the moon.""Right? What woman wouldn't want to get married there? Oh, hey—Cora, when are you and Emory planning your wedding?"The question cut through the hum of chatter as several heads turned toward Cora."Me?" She hesitated for a second, then offered a polite smile. "I'll need to discuss it with my mom first.""Any idea where you'll hold it?"Before Cora could respond, Scarlet scoffed from across the table. "Where else could it be? Probably one of Goldspire City's cheapest motels. Let's be honest—Cora's family doesn't have any connections, and they're certainly not rolling in money. And Emory? He's a nobody from the mountains. What more can you expect? The Halstone Grand Hotel? Please. She's lucky if they even let her through the front door.""I don't need to get married at Halstone!" Cora said, lifting her chin. "A small motel is fine. As long as Emory shows u

"Cora, move aside." Helen's voice cut through the room, sharp and filled with disappointment as she glared at her daughter."I'm not moving!" Cora's eyes were red. "I want to be with Emory.""You—are you trying to drive me to an early grave?" Helen, furious, spun around and slammed the door to her bedroom.Watching the door rattle in the frame, Cora gave Emory a tired, bitter smile. "Honey, don't take what my mom said to heart.""It's fine," Emory said, shaking his head. "I've gotten used to it these past few days."He hesitated a moment, then added, "Cora, how about I go with you to the Caison residence tomorrow? I might be able to help with that international music academy partnership."He had saved Robert's life—he figured Cassidy would give him that much courtesy."No need, sweetheart. You just started your new job today. You'll be swamped tomorrow and the next. I can handle going to Crystal Baycourt by myself. Don't worry—your wife is a tough cookie," she said with a wink, g

After the dinner at Madison estate, Cora left with Emory. After they were gone, Alice strolled over to Scarlet with a smile. "Scarlet, aren't you going to help Cora find Linda's granddaughter?"Earlier during dinner, Cora had explained the complications holding up construction in Everdeen Village. Without locating Linda's granddaughter, the international music academy project couldn't move forward."Me? Why would I help Cora?" Scarlet's lips curled in a cold smirk. "It's not like the Caison family's working with me. Besides, I'm honestly curious—how long do you think they'll tolerate Cora's delays? I wouldn't be surprised if the Caison family loses their patience.""You mean, you don't think she'll find Linda's granddaughter?" Alice asked, catching the implication."Hmph. It's not easy to find a girl who's been missing for ten years." Scarlet shook her head, voice heavy with disdain. "Does Cora really think she can keep pulling off miracles?""You've got a point." Alice nodded. "L

Emory calmly set down his fork."You'll handle him?" Ellen let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "You think you're some kind of mystic warrior?"Scarlet shot Emory a look of pure disdain. She didn't bother speaking—clearly, she thought engaging would be beneath her."No," Emory admitted, shaking his head as the eyes around the table settled on him. "I'm not a mystic warrior. But I—""I knew you weren't!" Ellen cut him off before he could finish. "You're just some country bumpkin from the mountains. What do you know about mystic arts? Do you have any idea how expensive the training is? You couldn't even afford a proper betrothal gift for Cora—how on earth would you pay for lessons?"She straightened up, her voice rising with self-righteous superiority. "And let me remind you—Derrick's backed by Jason Eli, the most dangerous man in Goldspire's underworld. Jason recently reached the level just below Master Quentin himself. Do you think you can afford to offend him? Even our family has to tr

"Honey, you know her?" Cora asked, unable to hide her curiosity as she noticed Emory staring at the girl in the photo frame."No," Emory said, shaking his head. She sighed. "Alright then…"She hesitated, then continued, "Her granddaughter's been missing for ten years. Trying to find her now... it's close to impossible.""We won't know unless we try." Emory offered a faint smile. "Unless, of course, you're planning to bulldoze Linda's house for your international music academy?""I don't want to do that," Cora said, her voice soft but firm. "She's been through enough.""Then let me handle it," Emory said, lifting the frame. "If we're lucky, we'll have something by tomorrow."He turned and walked away, photo in hand.Watching his back, Cora spoke under her breath, "Mom, do you think he can really find her?""Find her? My foot!" Helen didn't bother hiding her contempt. "Ten years missing. Who knows if she's even still in Vermillion Delta? Where's he supposed to start—thin air? Mig

Linda spoke with a bitter edge to her voice, a mix of sorrow and self-mockery bleeding through every word."It's really nothing, Linda," Cora said softly, offering a gentle smile that felt like a breeze in spring. "Helping you… helps me too."Emory, standing nearby, watched his wife chatting with the old woman and frowned. "Cora, what's going on? What do you mean, helping yourself? And who was that woman earlier?""That was Denise," Cora replied. "She was adopted by Linda, but she's never supported her—not even once. All she does is wish for Linda to die so she can take her house and money. A complete ingrate."Her anger rose as she continued. "If Denise really managed to snatch the house, she'd definitely use it to blackmail the Madison family for a cut of the relocation compensation from Everdeen Village. That's why I stepped in, and… things got heated.""I see," Emory said quietly, watching his wife stand up for the old woman. "What about Linda's other family? No one else around

When Emory arrived at Everdeen Village, the first thing he saw was Helen arguing heatedly with a flashy young woman dressed to the nines. Nearby, Cora sat on the ground, wiping tears from her eyes."Cora, Helen, what happened?" Emory walked up, his voice calm but concerned. Before Cora could answer, Helen snapped, pointing a trembling finger at the woman. "What gives you the right to hit my daughter?"The young woman didn't flinch. She crossed her arms and sneered. "So what if I hit her? She stuck her nose where it didn't belong.""You—!"Helen looked ready to lash out, but Cora gently tugged at Helen's arm and shook her head. "Let it go, Mom. Let her leave.""You still not gone?" Helen barked, turning back to the woman. The woman glared at Cora as she turned to leave. "Let me tell you something, Cora. Linda's house, her money—it's all mine now. I don't respect elders. So what? What can you do about it? You wanna play hero again next time?" she sneered. "I'll beat you to death."

"A ninth-rank mystic warrior, huh?"Emory gave a wry smile, then turned to Bobby. "All right. I'll meet him."Soon enough, Emory was in Lunar Ventures's reception room, face to face with Jason. Jason wore a black jacket, and his body—solid with bronzed muscle—looked built for war."You're the new chairman of Lunar Ventures, Emory Belen?" Jason's hawk-like eyes bored into him."I am," Emory replied calmly. "What do you want?""I want your company to find someone for me," Jason said, all confidence. "Do the job, and I'll pay you seven million."He slid a photograph across the table. It showed a girl, no older than sixteen or seventeen."Not interested," Emory said without glancing at the picture.Jason's smile didn't falter, but his voice darkened. "You might want to reconsider, Emory. I have a feeling we'll be working together a lot in Goldspire in the future."As he spoke, an invisible force surged from Jason, exploding the table and chairs in front of him into splinters.Bobb

When the meeting finally wrapped up, Cora sought out Scarlet in private."What do you want?" Scarlet arched a brow, glancing at her with a smirk that carried more arrogance than curiosity."Scarlet, do you know why Linda refuses to move?" Cora asked, genuinely curious. The compensation their family had offered was generous—by any measure, Linda shouldn't still be clinging to that dilapidated house in Everdeen Village."Of course I know why." Scarlet's smile deepened with mischief. "But why would I tell you?"Cora was at a loss for words."Cora, the Caisons handed you the international music academy project. That means it's your responsibility. Don't come running to me every time you hit a wall. Why should I help you? Why don't you ask Emory for his help?" Her voice dripped with mockery. "Didn't you say Emory knows the Caisons? If he's so capable, shouldn't a mere holdout be an easy fix for him?""Scarlet, you and I both know Emory doesn't actually know anyone from the Caison fami

She backed away and left the worn-down village house. She had just stepped outside when she came face to face with Scarlet."Well, well," Scarlet said, arms crossed, a sly smirk tugging at her lips. Or did you forget what the Caison family said?""Relax," Scarlet replied, feigning innocence. "I'm just here to check in on the old lady. No need to be so tense."She turned and

Bobby's expression stiffened, but he quickly forced a smile. "In that case, since he's family, I'll let it slide. The seven thousand he swindled from us—no need to make a fuss.""Swindle
