Chapter 9

ผู้เขียน: Ebon Luna
"What? Master Quentin, are you… are you serious? Alright. I understand."

When Madeline hung up the phone, every pair of eyes in the room turned toward her.

"Mom, what did Master Quentin call about?"

She drew a long breath, steadying the emotion in her voice. "Do you remember how the Caison family from Nambern was planning to invest in an international music academy in Vermillion Delta?"

Everyone nodded.

"Well, Master Quentin just informed me—the representative from the Caison family is Robert Caison."

At the mention of that name, her tone shifted, carrying a weight of reverence.

"What? Robert? The legendary Aetherlord?"

"He's one of the most powerful people in Sacholles, and he is coming to Vermillion Delta?"

"I heard Robert suffered a serious injury years ago. They said he wouldn't live past sixty. Maybe he's here to return to his roots. His mother was from Vermillion Delta, after all."

As hushed murmurs filled the room, Madeline's voice cut through them like a blade. "Silence!"

The room froze.

"A legendary Aetherlord like Robert holds status and power beyond what we can imagine. Do you want to bring ruin upon the Madison family by carelessly gossiping about him?"

Stillness fell, as heavy as stone. No one dared speak.

She continued, "Previously, I said that whoever secured the Caison family's cooperation on the music academy would receive the Rose Villa by Viona Lake."

A pause.

"But I've changed my mind."

"Whoever succeeds in sealing this deal with the Caison family—will become the next head of the Madison family."

Gasps rippled across the room.

Hilda visibly stiffened.

"Grandma… are you serious?" Scarlet's voice carried a barely hidden tremor.

She hadn't been interested in the Caison family's project. But this changed everything. Becoming head of the Madison family was something she dreamed about, night after night.

"Since when have I ever lied to any of you?"

As soon as the words left Madeline's lips, Cora, who stood quietly at Emory's side, stepped forward. "Grandma, I'll do everything I can to negotiate this deal with the Caison family."

"You?" a male cousin sneered, not bothering to hide the disdain in his tone. "Cora, are you joking? Robert's status is miles above ours. If we're sending someone to represent the Madison family, it should be someone like Scarlet—a CEO of a publicly listed company. Or at least your younger cousin, who is a strong warrior. If not them, maybe Alice from abroad, who graduated top of her class. But you? What do you have? No job, no degree. What makes you think you qualify?"

"I…" Cora's voice faltered. She couldn't find the words to respond.

But beside her, Emory's voice rang out—cold and clear.

"Scarlet, we had a deal. I said if I cured Cora's legs within three days, you'd let her handle the Caison family negotiations. Her legs are healed. Don't tell me the Madison family plans to go back on its word?"

Scarlet laughed, sharp and mocking. "You? You cured her legs? Don't flatter yourself. It was clearly Dr. Ian who did that."

Emory's expression didn't change. "Then call Dr. Ian and ask him. Ask him if he has that kind of skill."

"Fine, we'll do that. What, you think I'm scared of you?" Scarlet pulled out her phone.

But before she could dial, Madeline snapped, "That's enough."

Her gaze swept across the room.

"Any member of the Madison family is allowed to negotiate with the Caison family. Whoever seals the deal will become the next head of the Madison family."

When Emory and Cora returned home, everything was still and quiet.

Suddenly—

Swoosh.

Something soft and fragrant landed in Emory's arms. A subtle scent drifted to his nose—light and elegant, like an orchid in bloom.

"Cora?" he asked, caught off guard.

She was on her tiptoes, wrapped around him tightly. For a moment, Emory stood there frozen, feeling the warmth of her body pressed against his. He could clearly sense the curves and shape of his wife—something he hadn't paid attention to before.

"Honey… thank you for healing my legs," Cora said softly, her cheeks turning pink as she buried her face in his chest. "Everyone else says it was Dr. Ian, but I know it was you. You healed me. From now on… I'll take good care of you."

She'd wanted to hug him ever since she first stood up at the hospital. But there were too many people around. She was too shy. Now that they were home, nothing was holding her back.

"There's no need to thank me," Emory murmured. "We're husband and wife. If anyone should take care of you, it should be—"

But before he could finish, a cold voice rang out behind them.

"Cora, don't you have any shame?" Helen snapped. "Can't you show a little decency? You're a young woman—what happened to being modest? And don't tell me that it was Emory who healed your legs!"

"Why not?" Cora replied firmly. "That herbal juice was clearly Emory's special remedy."

"Special remedy?" Helen scoffed. "What a joke. If he really had some miracle cure, wouldn't he be selling it for money? Instead, he brought some worthless mushrooms from the mountains as a betrothal gift. Pathetic."

"Even if he doesn't have some secret recipe," Cora shot back, "he's still my husband. What's wrong with me hugging him?"

"Husband or not, you can't just cling to him like that!"

Helen yanked Cora away from Emory's arms.

As her warmth left him, Emory felt oddly empty. But then, all at once, something stirred inside him—something deep and unfamiliar. The Solar Vein Curse that had plagued him for years… was suddenly quiet.

"What…?" His expression shifted. "The Solar Vein Curse is… being suppressed?"

In all his years at the Vale of Cameron, the Solar Vein Curse had never once been contained. And now, within days of arriving at the Madison household—

No wonder his master had told him long ago: You must marry a woman of the Madison family if you wish to survive.

Now he understood. The women of the Madison family had the power to suppress the Solar Vein Curse.

The next morning, Cora had lightly touched up her makeup before heading to Crystal Baycourt in Goldspire City.

It was the most luxurious residential compound in Vermillion Delta.

And the people from the Caison family of Nambern… were staying there.

"Excuse me, who are you looking for?"

At the entrance, a few men in black robes blocked her path. Their steps were grounded, blood energy steady—clearly warriors.

"Hello," Cora said with composure. "I'm Cora Madison from the Madison family in Goldspire. I'm here to speak with the Caison family about the international music academy—"

Before she could finish, one of the men cut her off with a flat tone. "Sorry. The Caison family isn't receiving visitors today."

"…I understand." Cora hesitated, then turned around slowly, her shoulders tight with disappointment.

"Hey, Cora, you actually had the nerve to come to Crystal Baycourt and try to talk to the Caison family?"

A sleek red Porsche stopped in front of her. Scarlet sat inside, draped in a high-end Chanel evening gown and Valentino heels. She lowered the window with a mocking smile.

"What happened? Got turned away at the gate? Didn't even get a glimpse of them, did you?" Her voice was sweet but laced with cruelty. "You should give up now. Don't embarrass yourself at places like this."

"I won't give up," Cora said calmly. Without looking back, she walked away.

Inside the Porsche, a man in the passenger seat glanced at her departing figure.

"That woman… who is she?" Sylas asked. His eyes followed her, caught by her presence.

There was something pure and untouched about her—like a lotus about to bloom, completely unsullied by the world. So different from Scarlet's polished, poised beauty.

"She's my cousin," Scarlet replied with disdain. "Cora. Used to be disabled."

"Disabled?"

"She got her leg healed yesterday by Dr. Ian. So technically, not disabled anymore."

Scarlet looked at Sylas with a sly smile. "What? You interested in her?"

Before he could respond, she continued casually, "Go ahead and try. You'll never win me over, but Cora? That's a lower bar. Could be worth a shot."

"But… isn't she married to Emory?" Sylas asked, uncertain.

"Emory? Please. He's just some hillbilly from the mountains," Scarlet scoffed. "Can he even compare to you? Besides, don't men like you prefer married women?"

"Cough, cough…" Sylas laughed awkwardly. "Scarlet, don't say it like that. Not all men are the same. I'm a very… pure kind of guy."

She didn't bother to call him out on the lie. Instead, she shifted gears, her voice casual. "Sylas, didn't you say you had a way to help me meet the Caison family? What's your plan?"

In the tranquil courtyard of Crystal Baycourt, an old man wrapped in a white mink coat sat playing chess with a young girl in a teal-blue tunic. She looked about eighteen or nineteen, ponytail tied high. She looked lively and mischievous."Grandpa, you've lost again," Cassidy Caison said, placing a white piece on the board. She stuck out her tongue playfully. "You're so bad at this—can't even win a single game against me.""Maybe it's because I'm getting old," Robert replied, eyes drifting to the black piece in his hand, gaze lost in memories long gone."You're only fifty-nine," she retorted. "That's not old at all."Just as her voice faded, the sound of approaching footsteps echoed from the courtyard behind them. A servant's voice followed, "Ms. Cassidy, Scarlet Madison of the Madison family has come to visit.""Hm?"Cassidy looked up at the woman walking toward them. She was elegant, with a sultry charm that turned heads. Cassidy's face remained neutral."What do you want, Ms.

"Grandpa…" Cassidy choked out a sob the moment she saw Robert open one eye. "You're finally awake. I thought—I thought I'd never see you again…"But Emory shook his head slowly."He's not awake," he said quietly. "This is just the final flare of light before the flame goes out.""The final flare?" Cassidy's voice trembled. "Can he still be saved?""He can," Emory replied, nodding with calm certainty."Then I'm counting on you, Doctor."Something in the way he said it—steady, unrushed—allowed a fragile hope to stir in Cassidy's chest.Time passed. One minute. Then another. Ten minutes slipped by.Neither Cassidy nor Lucy dared make a sound. The two women stood still, barely breathing, as they watched Emory draw symbols over the area of Robert's internal organs. Then—"Huuh…" Emory exhaled deeply and withdrew his hand.At that very moment, a blinding white light flashed briefly from all seven of Robert's orifices. A second later, thick, black blood began to ooze from beneath h

After parting ways with Lucy, Emory made his way to Lunar Ventures.Located in the heart of Goldspire City, Lunar Ventures occupied hundreds of acres and boasted a seventy-story office tower, a landmark in the city skyline.Standing outside the towering building was a middle-aged man in a crisp white suit, a Rolex glinting on his wrist. He waited with practiced politeness, posture straight, eyes scanning the entrance. As soon as he spotted Emory approaching, he stepped forward eagerly. "Mr. Emory Belen?""That's me," Emory replied with a nod."Please, come in. Master Robert has instructed us—starting today, you're the new Chairman of Lunar Ventures." The man's voice was respectful, almost reverent. He introduced himself as Bobby Cowell, then led Emory straight to the chairman's office and handed him a thick folder. "Mr. Emory, this contains information on all our current assets and projects under Lunar Ventures."He produced a business card next. "And from now on, I'll be your pe

After Lillian was dragged out, the lobby finally quieted.Bobby turned to Emory, then, without a word, slapped himself hard across the face—twice. He forced a smile. "Sir, I'm truly sorry. This was my mistake. I trusted the wrong person and caused you unnecessary trouble."Emory shook his head. "Let it go. It's not your fault."He turned, about to leave Lunar Ventures, when a white-haired man in a brown suit hurried in from outside. As soon as he caught sight of Bobby, his expression shifted into one of desperation."Bobby, I need your help," he said, practically pleading. "Halstone Grand Hotel is having a little cash flow issue. Could you loan me 30 million? I promise I'll pay it back—soon. I just need a little time—""Ahem." Bobby cut him off, his tone cool. "Robin, I'm not in charge of things at Lunar Ventures anymore. If you're looking for a loan, you'll have to speak with our new chairman.""Chairman Emory?" Robin Vito blinked, glancing at Emory."That's right," Bobby confir

"I'm so jealous of Alice. She's actually getting married at the Halstone Grand Hotel.""If that were me, I'd be over the moon.""Right? What woman wouldn't want to get married there? Oh, hey—Cora, when are you and Emory planning your wedding?"The question cut through the hum of chatter as several heads turned toward Cora."Me?" She hesitated for a second, then offered a polite smile. "I'll need to discuss it with my mom first.""Any idea where you'll hold it?"Before Cora could respond, Scarlet scoffed from across the table. "Where else could it be? Probably one of Goldspire City's cheapest motels. Let's be honest—Cora's family doesn't have any connections, and they're certainly not rolling in money. And Emory? He's a nobody from the mountains. What more can you expect? The Halstone Grand Hotel? Please. She's lucky if they even let her through the front door.""I don't need to get married at Halstone!" Cora said, lifting her chin. "A small motel is fine. As long as Emory shows u

"Cora, move aside." Helen's voice cut through the room, sharp and filled with disappointment as she glared at her daughter."I'm not moving!" Cora's eyes were red. "I want to be with Emory.""You—are you trying to drive me to an early grave?" Helen, furious, spun around and slammed the door to her bedroom.Watching the door rattle in the frame, Cora gave Emory a tired, bitter smile. "Honey, don't take what my mom said to heart.""It's fine," Emory said, shaking his head. "I've gotten used to it these past few days."He hesitated a moment, then added, "Cora, how about I go with you to the Caison residence tomorrow? I might be able to help with that international music academy partnership."He had saved Robert's life—he figured Cassidy would give him that much courtesy."No need, sweetheart. You just started your new job today. You'll be swamped tomorrow and the next. I can handle going to Crystal Baycourt by myself. Don't worry—your wife is a tough cookie," she said with a wink, g

"What? Cassidy is expecting Cora? That's impossible."Scarlet stared at the security guard in stunned disbelief. Her voice trembled with confusion, eyes wide as the words sank in.Cassidy? Of all people? She couldn't process it. The Caison family stood at the very top of the social ladder—untouchable, unimaginable. And Cora? She was nothing. Just an ordinary woman, barely scraping by. By all logic, the two should never have crossed paths. But right before her eyes, Cora was being ushered in like an honored guest, vanishing into the distance.Something snapped in Scarlet's mind. She blinked, then darted forward, calling out, "Wait!"A guard stepped in to block her path. "I'm sorry, miss. Crystal Baycourt isn't accepting guests today.""I'm her cousin!" Scarlet blurted, pointing at Cora's back. "We came together! Cora! Wait!"Cora stopped. She turned slightly, eyes flicking toward Scarlet. The guard hesitated, then stepped aside.Inside the grand courtyard, Scarlet caught up to

"Scarlet, I heard you sealed the deal with the Caison family in Nambern on the international music academy project?"Inside the sleek offices of Scarlet Media, Sylas—dressed in a tailored suit, every bit the polished gentleman—had sought her out."Sylas, your sources are pretty sharp, huh?" Scarlet's tone was flat, her expression clouded."I might miss a few things when it comes to others," he said with an easy smile, "but not when it's you. You're the woman I've been chasing."Then, narrowing his eyes, he added, "But who got under your skin? You just landed a major deal with the Caison family. Shouldn't you be over the moon?""Don't even bring it up. It's that Cora."As she spoke, she pulled out the contract from the Caison family and handed it to him. "See for yourself.""Huh? Why is Cora's name on this contract too?" Sylas looked genuinely surprised. Then he gave her a knowing look. "Let me guess—you don't want to share the credit with her.""No kidding. After the dinner at Madison estate, Cora left with Emory. After they were gone, Alice strolled over to Scarlet with a smile. "Scarlet, aren't you going to help Cora find Linda's granddaughter?"Earlier during dinner, Cora had explained the complications holding up construction in Everdeen Village. Without locating Linda's granddaughter, the international music academy project couldn't move forward."Me? Why would I help Cora?" Scarlet's lips curled in a cold smirk. "It's not like the Caison family's working with me. Besides, I'm honestly curious—how long do you think they'll tolerate Cora's delays? I wouldn't be surprised if the Caison family loses their patience.""You mean, you don't think she'll find Linda's granddaughter?" Alice asked, catching the implication."Hmph. It's not easy to find a girl who's been missing for ten years." Scarlet shook her head, voice heavy with disdain. "Does Cora really think she can keep pulling off miracles?""You've got a point." Alice nodded. "L

Emory calmly set down his fork."You'll handle him?" Ellen let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "You think you're some kind of mystic warrior?"Scarlet shot Emory a look of pure disdain. She didn't bother speaking—clearly, she thought engaging would be beneath her."No," Emory admitted, shaking his head as the eyes around the table settled on him. "I'm not a mystic warrior. But I—""I knew you weren't!" Ellen cut him off before he could finish. "You're just some country bumpkin from the mountains. What do you know about mystic arts? Do you have any idea how expensive the training is? You couldn't even afford a proper betrothal gift for Cora—how on earth would you pay for lessons?"She straightened up, her voice rising with self-righteous superiority. "And let me remind you—Derrick's backed by Jason Eli, the most dangerous man in Goldspire's underworld. Jason recently reached the level just below Master Quentin himself. Do you think you can afford to offend him? Even our family has to tr

"Honey, you know her?" Cora asked, unable to hide her curiosity as she noticed Emory staring at the girl in the photo frame."No," Emory said, shaking his head. She sighed. "Alright then…"She hesitated, then continued, "Her granddaughter's been missing for ten years. Trying to find her now... it's close to impossible.""We won't know unless we try." Emory offered a faint smile. "Unless, of course, you're planning to bulldoze Linda's house for your international music academy?""I don't want to do that," Cora said, her voice soft but firm. "She's been through enough.""Then let me handle it," Emory said, lifting the frame. "If we're lucky, we'll have something by tomorrow."He turned and walked away, photo in hand.Watching his back, Cora spoke under her breath, "Mom, do you think he can really find her?""Find her? My foot!" Helen didn't bother hiding her contempt. "Ten years missing. Who knows if she's even still in Vermillion Delta? Where's he supposed to start—thin air? Mig

Linda spoke with a bitter edge to her voice, a mix of sorrow and self-mockery bleeding through every word."It's really nothing, Linda," Cora said softly, offering a gentle smile that felt like a breeze in spring. "Helping you… helps me too."Emory, standing nearby, watched his wife chatting with the old woman and frowned. "Cora, what's going on? What do you mean, helping yourself? And who was that woman earlier?""That was Denise," Cora replied. "She was adopted by Linda, but she's never supported her—not even once. All she does is wish for Linda to die so she can take her house and money. A complete ingrate."Her anger rose as she continued. "If Denise really managed to snatch the house, she'd definitely use it to blackmail the Madison family for a cut of the relocation compensation from Everdeen Village. That's why I stepped in, and… things got heated.""I see," Emory said quietly, watching his wife stand up for the old woman. "What about Linda's other family? No one else around

When Emory arrived at Everdeen Village, the first thing he saw was Helen arguing heatedly with a flashy young woman dressed to the nines. Nearby, Cora sat on the ground, wiping tears from her eyes."Cora, Helen, what happened?" Emory walked up, his voice calm but concerned. Before Cora could answer, Helen snapped, pointing a trembling finger at the woman. "What gives you the right to hit my daughter?"The young woman didn't flinch. She crossed her arms and sneered. "So what if I hit her? She stuck her nose where it didn't belong.""You—!"Helen looked ready to lash out, but Cora gently tugged at Helen's arm and shook her head. "Let it go, Mom. Let her leave.""You still not gone?" Helen barked, turning back to the woman. The woman glared at Cora as she turned to leave. "Let me tell you something, Cora. Linda's house, her money—it's all mine now. I don't respect elders. So what? What can you do about it? You wanna play hero again next time?" she sneered. "I'll beat you to death."

"A ninth-rank mystic warrior, huh?"Emory gave a wry smile, then turned to Bobby. "All right. I'll meet him."Soon enough, Emory was in Lunar Ventures's reception room, face to face with Jason. Jason wore a black jacket, and his body—solid with bronzed muscle—looked built for war."You're the new chairman of Lunar Ventures, Emory Belen?" Jason's hawk-like eyes bored into him."I am," Emory replied calmly. "What do you want?""I want your company to find someone for me," Jason said, all confidence. "Do the job, and I'll pay you seven million."He slid a photograph across the table. It showed a girl, no older than sixteen or seventeen."Not interested," Emory said without glancing at the picture.Jason's smile didn't falter, but his voice darkened. "You might want to reconsider, Emory. I have a feeling we'll be working together a lot in Goldspire in the future."As he spoke, an invisible force surged from Jason, exploding the table and chairs in front of him into splinters.Bobb

When the meeting finally wrapped up, Cora sought out Scarlet in private."What do you want?" Scarlet arched a brow, glancing at her with a smirk that carried more arrogance than curiosity."Scarlet, do you know why Linda refuses to move?" Cora asked, genuinely curious. The compensation their family had offered was generous—by any measure, Linda shouldn't still be clinging to that dilapidated house in Everdeen Village."Of course I know why." Scarlet's smile deepened with mischief. "But why would I tell you?"Cora was at a loss for words."Cora, the Caisons handed you the international music academy project. That means it's your responsibility. Don't come running to me every time you hit a wall. Why should I help you? Why don't you ask Emory for his help?" Her voice dripped with mockery. "Didn't you say Emory knows the Caisons? If he's so capable, shouldn't a mere holdout be an easy fix for him?""Scarlet, you and I both know Emory doesn't actually know anyone from the Caison fami

Cora kept her tone calm, her voice soft and patient as she tried to reason with the old woman. But the moment she finished speaking, a frail elderly woman with white hair and rope sandals came storming out, a broom in her hand."Enough of your noise," the woman snapped. "I told you I'm not moving! You're a pretty girl, but can't you understand plain words? Get lost!"With that, she started swinging the broom at Cora, chasing her out.Cora had no choice. She backed away and left the worn-down village house. She had just stepped outside when she came face to face with Scarlet."Well, well," Scarlet said, arms crossed, a sly smirk tugging at her lips. "Looks like things aren't going too smoothly, huh?""What are you doing here?" Cora's tone went cold. "Planning to meddle in the academy's construction now? Or did you forget what the Caison family said?""Relax," Scarlet replied, feigning innocence. "I'm just here to check in on the old lady. No need to be so tense."She turned and

"Trouble, huh?" Emory looked at Tyler and shook his head with quiet disdain. "If it's trouble, then let it come. Water rises, we build a dam; soldiers come, we beat them down. You really think I'd care about a little inconvenience?"Tyler blinked in surprise, then let out a sharp bark of laughter. "Emory, you're just some hick from the mountains. What could you possibly—"His phone rang.Tyler glanced at the screen. His smile froze. He turned without another word and walked off, the laughter drained from his face.Moments after he disappeared, Bobby emerged from the office lobby of Lunar Ventures. He spotted Emory and hesitated a beat before stepping forward."Mr. Emory," he said cautiously, "you know that man?"Emory nodded. "He's married to my wife's cousin.""Oh… So Tyler is related to you?" Bobby's expression stiffened, but he quickly forced a smile. "In that case, since he's family, I'll let it slide. The seven thousand he swindled from us—no need to make a fuss.""Swindle
