...Damian POV...After the others had left, the doctor looked at me with a somber look on his face. I knew whatever he was about to tell me, was not going to be good."Ms. Cunningham sustained multiple gunshot wounds. She bled out and required multiple transfusions. She was considered clinically dead on arrival, however, we managed to revive her. We managed to stabilize both her and the baby.""Wait.. what? What baby?" I asked, caught off guard. Were we talking about the same Haley Cunningham? Was there another one that had been shot? "Our tests showed that Ms. Cunningham is indeed pregnant. It is still quite early into term, so she may not be aware of it herself. However, the next few weeks will remain critical. Since she lost a lot of blood, she is at high risk of a miscarriage. The two of you should be prepared for that scenario. It isn't common for fetuses to survive long after significant trauma. But for now, they are both ok."I straightened in the bed, painfully at that, as my
...Zane POV... Watching my brother with his son was a truly euphoric moment. I felt my heart swell seeing him and Maverick together. I was happy for my brother. I never thought I would ever have this moment. Not too long ago, I was betting my brother to stay in a relationship because he bounced from girl to girl so often that he was like a bee pollinating flowers. Not once did I think he would actually settle down and have a family of his own. I know he made mistakes, but I also know that he regrets his actions as well. I just hoped that Haley would consider giving him another chance. I knew he didn't deserve it. But I knew the two of them were good together. Haley made my brother a much better man. She also made him a father. A role he hasn't had for long, but one in which I knew he would take seriously. It was safe to say his player ways were long behind him.Seeing that my brother had calmed down, I thought it would be a good time to get Jace and Cynthia back into the room. I sto
Hours seemed to go by before anyone came out to tell us what had happened. The doctor pulled me aside into Damian's room, as they wheeled his bed back into the room. This time Damian was completely unconscious and didn't appear to be waking up anytime soon. His skin has also lost a lot of colour."What happened?" I asked, needing answers."Your brother suffered from an Arterial bleed. It is very common amongst gunshot victims. They can prove to be fatal, as they are hard to detect. We believe the first gunshot to his abdomen managed to nick one of his larger arteries. Normally, the cut wouldn't have caused any damage, but we believe that the second shot was what caused the damage. As the bullet fractured, severing the vein. It wasn't picked up in our original scans, as the bleed itself was located in a hard-to-reach area, behind the spine. We believe that he may have been bleeding for a while now. But the shift in his posture earlier is what made it more severe. This is why he stopped
While Jace had gone to search for Damian and Haley's belongings, a group of doctors entered the corridor just like before. However, this time pushing a gurney with Haley on it. I felt myself relax seeing her being pushed into one of the nearby rooms. She was alive. That's all I could ask for. I followed the doctors into the room, and waited for them to finish hooking everything up before I began to ask my triad of questions."How is she?" I asked, after the nurses and guards had left the room."Not good. She was shot multiple times, at various places along her body. It's almost as though someone was using her for target practice. I've never seen someone this bad before.""But the baby?" I began, but the doctor seemed to understand my train of thought."The baby's ok. By a sheer miracle, none of the bullets went close enough to injure the baby. Though we still need to monitor over the next week. Anything could happen. We've never really had a case as severe as hers, so we're unsure as
"How so?" I asked."If you're right, which I'm inclined to believe since you helped design it. Then that means that Blaze isn't as ahead as I thought he was. Without you, Evanish is pretty much useless.""Mhmm... So what's our next steps?""Our?" Jace remarked, raising a brow at me."No. you are not getting any more involved in this than you already are. I will arrange to have some men come and escort you and Jessica to a safe house outside of the country. The two of you will be safe with my team, while we work on locating Blaze and the remaining Cobras.""What? There's no way we're doing that. I'm not just going to run and hide. I want this done and over with. And who's to say that they don't manage to find a hacker just as good as my brother and I, and in a few weeks are able to track us down? I won't put Jessica's life in danger.""So then what do you propose?" Jace said, teasingly, knowing far too well that I didn't actually have an answer."Why don't we use me as bait? We know it
I carefully held my breath, making my movements slow and steady as I reached over to mute the machine. I managed to do the first one flawlessly. I then reached over and muted the second. Once the machines were muted, I removed the IV carefully from my arm. I used the blanket to cover the blood that came out and checked it soon after. My arm had thankfully stopped bleeding, only a small trickle had come out. I shifted my legs off the bed and tried standing up. It wasn't easy at first, but thankfully my legs began to work with me rather quickly. I looked around the room for anything that I could use. Unfortunately, the only thing I could find was a pair of scrub pants in the bathroom. They seemed to be clean and were probably there for me once I had a chance to shower. I wished there were shoes, however, I wasn't so lucky. I snuck up towards the door, and silently checked to see where all the guards were. Unfortunately, there were two guards stationed outside of my room. So escaping
...Zane POV...We had been at this for over an hour now. Jace was giving me a crash course into being a spy. He was teaching me everything I needed to know so that way I would be safe once I was out there. Right now we were going over how to use a gun. I've never so much as looked at one before. Guns were not my thing. So to be holding one was a completely different experience altogether. I couldn't explain why, but I started to feel a bit antzy. I put the gun down on the table, much to Jace's dismay."What are you doing?" He asked."I just need to check on my brother." I stated. I couldn't even explain why. Only that for some reason I felt like something was wrong.I walked out of the room, walking directly towards Damian's room. Jace was quick behind me, but remained in the hallway as I entered Damian's room. I looked into the room, expecting my brother to be sleeping. So call me surprised when I walked into his room to see it abandoned."Where did my brother go?" I ask.Jace immed
Time seemed to stop as I looked at the gun pointed at my head. Afraid of making any sudden movements that would make his trigger finger twitch, ending me here and now."Now. I think you have something I'm after." Blaze hissed."I don't. I swear. I don't have anything you'd want." I replied, feigning ignorance."I don't believe that." Blaze remarked."It's true. I have nothing you'd want.""And what is it you think I want?" Blaze asked, making me turn my head slightly as if trying to read his mind."See now... I know you have exactly what I'm looking for. If you didn't, then why would you be so adamant to come here of all places? When you should be resting in the hospital." Blaze remarked, stepping closer to me. Not once moving the gun even a fraction of a millimetre away from me."I was just getting some clothes. As you can see there's not a good selection at the hospital. I thought Haley might want some as well.""Mhmm. So that's why you evaded your guards and snuck out of the buildi
