People who had been trying to cozy up to Felix quickly stepped back. A circle of onlookers watched Blake with amused smirks, like he was the evening’s entertainment.

Felix sneered. “Mr. Smith, don’t throw around baseless accusations. I’m an honest businessman.”

Blake snapped, “Cut the crap! You knew that land was protected for historical preservation, but you pretended to bid against me just to drive me into bankruptcy!”

Felix listened calmly, then smirked. “Even if I knew about it, so what?”

“Damn it! Just wait. I’ll make your life a living hell!”

After the commotion ended, Xena handed me over to Blake as planned.

Xena suddenly seemed nervous. “Are you sure this is going to work?”

“It will,” I reassured her calmly.

Soon, I was passed into a pair of large hands. I knew they belonged to Blake, so I pretended to be fast asleep.
