Chapter 4

Author: Izzy Wis
From that point on, Xena’s life became a non-stop cycle of taking care of me around the clock. It was a “wonderful” mix of sleepless nights and constant chaos.

Whenever she tried to sleep, I would start crying. After an hour of her exhausting attempts to soothe me, just when she thought I had settled down, I would wake up screaming again.

When she tried to feed me, I would spit up right in her face.

Any chance I got, I would yank her hair or grab at her face.

I pushed her to the brink. She had hoped to sweet-talk Felix into getting her credit cards back so she could go shopping. But eventually, she was so fed up that she handed me over to the nanny.

The moment the nanny held me, I started crying so loudly it could break everyone’s heart in the whole mansion.

Her mother-in-law, my grandma, stormed in, glaring at her. “Xena! What kind of mother are you? You don’t even want to take care of your own child? If you can’t handle it, then get out of my house!

“Seriously, what kind of us

Felix had just walked in from work and barely had time to change into his slippers before Grandma started ranting about everything Xena had done. When he heard that Xena had called me a “monster,” his expression darkened.“That woman!” he muttered angrily, then headed straight upstairs.I felt a little let down. I was hoping for a front-row seat to the drama! To my surprise, Grandma scooped me up and followed right behind him, fanning the flames all the way up.You got to hand it to Grandma. She really knew how to get things done!Felix kicked open the bedroom door, and there was Xena, in the middle of doing her makeup. She jumped, startled by the loud noise.Immediately, she put on her best teary-eyed expression and pouted, “Honey, you’re home!”Her voice was soft and pleading, but the visible red slap marks on her face made the whole scene look ridiculous.I couldn’t help but think, wow, Grandma really didn’t hold back.Grandma’s voice was filled with rage as she shouted, “

I noticed Grandma’s hand was smeared with red makeup!Felix looked stunned. He glanced at Xena’s face, now a mess of smeared red and white, making her look like a startled raccoon.I watched Felix’s expression shift from anger to confusion and back again. I couldn’t help but think, “Looks like Xena’s makeup isn’t as high-quality as she thought!”Grandma rubbed her hands together and sneered, “Trying to use my old tricks against me? You don’t even know who you’re up against!”“Xena!” Felix, now furious, stormed over.He had felt a bit guilty toward her before, but that had vanished in an instant. He grabbed a handful of Xena’s hair, yanking her head back, and warned.“From now on, you’ll take care of the baby properly! No more of your nonsense!“Or I’ll divorce you on the spot, and you’ll have to pay back every cent you’ve spent from my family all these years!“Do you understand?”Xena nodded blankly. Only then did Felix take me from Grandma’s arms, holding me against his s

A few months went by, and I was already walking, talking clearly, and even recognizing letters. The whole family thought I was a prodigy. But I refused to call Xena “Mom.” Instead, when no one else was around, I would mutter under my breath, “Bitch,” “Trash,” “Shameless.”One time, Xena got so enraged that she tried to throw me down the stairs, but the nannies managed to stop her just in time.Felix thought she had lost her mind.Meanwhile, I had become really close with the nannies and got along great with them. After bringing in a few psychologists to evaluate her, Grandma, worried Xena might hurt me, decided to keep her confined upstairs.Xena’s mental state kept deteriorating.I could often hear her screaming and cursing. Finally, on my first birthday, they let her leave the house.Felix gave her all kinds of warnings, and she had no choice but to nod and agree. But I could see the hatred in her eyes. She was definitely planning her revenge.

The Lincoln family was not one of the top families in Adams City, but they were quickly climbing the social ladder. So, naturally, my first birthday party drew quite a crowd from high society.Guests arrived in a steady stream.Since the Lincolns and the Smiths were connected through marriage, the Smith family showed up early.Leading the Smith family was a young man with a smug look, like your typical rich playboy. After a quick greeting with Felix, he bent down, trying to pat me on the head.I immediately clung to Felix’s neck and turned away, making it clear I wanted nothing to do with him.“Kids are often afraid of strangers,” Felix said with a polite but dismissive smile. The man chuckled, unfazed. Leaning in, he said softly, “We should get our families together more often, don’t you think?”That voice…I buried my face deeper into Felix’s chest, trembling with fear.Felix gently patted my back, but I couldn’t stop shaking.I remembered that dark, dingy bathroom. As the guests arrived one by one, Xena stood beside Felix, her eyes red and swollen. What caught me off guard was the feeling of being watched.I glanced over and saw Blake staring right at me.It felt like being hunted by a predator, and a wave of fear washed over me.I quickly bit my tongue and turned away, pretending to be completely oblivious.Xena must have told Blake about some of my strange behavior.Felix would never take her side. After all, I was his daughter. What father wouldn’t love his own child?Plus, I was very good at hiding my true self. But Blake would side with her. They were siblings, after all.It looked like I would need to take things slow with my plan.Soon, it was time for the traditional first birthday ritual, where I was supposed to pick an item that would hint at my future. I pretended to crawl around aimlessly.Everyone gathered around, watching my every move. They cheered and called out, urging me to grab this or that. But I had already made

  • Reborn as My Enemy’s Child   Chapter 10

There was a time when Xena would often drag me from the school gate and force me into a car, taking me back to her house.“Miss Smith, please, let me go! I’ll do whatever you want!”But she ignored my pleas and shoved me inside, almost looking relieved.“Mia, with a pretty face like yours, you must love getting attention from men, right? Well, here’s your chance. Enjoy!”She slammed the door shut, plunging the room into darkness. No matter how much I begged, it didn’t matter.Just as I was losing hope, the door suddenly opened. In the faint moonlight, I saw him standing there. I had no idea what was about to happen. He looked me over, making me feel sick to my stomach. I begged him to let me go, but he just chuckled and slowly stepped toward me. My heart pounded as I backed away, and he laughed mockingly. He stared at me for a moment before pulling out a leather belt. I struggled desperately, but he was far stronger than me.Eventually, the belt bound my hands and wrapped aro

“There’s a ghost! A ghost!” Xena screamed. Her eyes were wide with fear as she stumbled backward until she crashed into the eight-tier cake Felix had prepared. She fell right into it, and in that moment, I saw her reach for the cake knife. She wiped the frosting off her face. She saw me laughing and, in a panic, hurled the knife straight at me.Everyone at the party was stunned, frozen in shock.Just as the knife was about to hit me, Felix rushed forward and shielded me with his body. The blade slashed across his back, and blood immediately started to pour.“Daddy!” I cried softly, then burst into loud sobs.Grandma kicked Xena hard and rushed over, tears streaming down her face as she hugged Felix and me.The room erupted into chaos, with me and Grandma crying hysterically, and the whole place in an uproar.Seeing that I was unharmed, Felix let out a sigh of relief. In the study, Blake looked at me with a mocking smile. “Mia, drop the act.”I shrank back, putting on my best innocent face. “Daddy, I’m scared!”Felix frowned, his expression darkening. “What are you trying to say?”Blake laughed casually before responding. “Felix, you’re a smart guy. Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed there’s something off about your daughter?”Felix’s face remained impassive. “Blake, if you have something to say, just spit it out. No need for all this drama.”“Xena just told me she thinks your daughter is possessed by someone else’s spirit. Xena believes she's some kind of cursed soul, like she’s out to destroy everyone.”“Blake, do you hear yourself? What is this? Why not say Xena’s possessed by some evil spirit too?” Felix scoffed, openly mocking him.“My daughter is smart because she inherited my intelligence. It’s that simple.“As for Xena, she’s acting like she’s lost her mind. I should probably have her committed to a mental hospital!”Blake ignored hi

When I opened my eyes, the strong smell of antiseptic filled the air.I shifted uncomfortably, and the movement seemed to wake Felix. His eyes were bloodshot, and when he saw I was awake, he quickly pressed the call button. “Are you okay?”I nodded, trying to shake off the grogginess. “I’m fine.”Then I asked, “What about Blake? Is he in jail? And what about Xena?”“Xena’s badly injured. She’s paralyzed from the neck down. Blake crashed the car into a bridge. He hurt his hand but got arrested.“But he held onto you the whole time. You didn’t get hurt.“You just passed out from the shock and have a few minor scrapes.”I was a bit surprised. I didn’t think he would actually try to crash the car. But I was glad he survived. Now he would face justice. I had already come to terms with dying. If taking down a monster like him was the price, I was willing to pay it.And Blake? He always claimed to love me, but his actions never matched his words. Maybe, in those final moments, he

The car sped down the highway. I was in Blake’s arms, while Xena sat in the passenger seat.I had done everything I could to stall them, and finally, I saw the flash of police lights in the rearview mirror. I had called 911 the moment Leo started driving off the usual route.Panicking, Blake knocked Felix unconscious and dragged Xena and me into his car.In the darkness, Blake let out a cold laugh. “Xena, I’ve given you so many chances, and this is how you repay me? Impressive.”Xena was trembling. “Blake, I did exactly what you asked. I brought her out for you!“Please, for the sake of our parents, don’t make this harder for me.”Blake scoffed, his voice deep and threatening. “You’re useless as a pawn and a failure as a tool. I’m done with you.”There was a struggle and the sound of screaming. A rush of cold air hit me, and when I opened my eyes, I saw Xena being pushed out of the car. Her desperate cries echoed in the night.I was stunned. I knew Blake was twisted, but I didn

People who had been trying to cozy up to Felix quickly stepped back. A circle of onlookers watched Blake with amused smirks, like he was the evening’s entertainment.Felix sneered. “Mr. Smith, don’t throw around baseless accusations. I’m an honest businessman.”Blake snapped, “Cut the crap! You knew that land was protected for historical preservation, but you pretended to bid against me just to drive me into bankruptcy!”Felix listened calmly, then smirked. “Even if I knew about it, so what?”“Damn it! Just wait. I’ll make your life a living hell!”After the commotion ended, Xena handed me over to Blake as planned.Xena suddenly seemed nervous. “Are you sure this is going to work?”“It will,” I reassured her calmly.Soon, I was passed into a pair of large hands. I knew they belonged to Blake, so I pretended to be fast asleep.“Xena, what kind of game are you playing?” Blake’s voice was suspicious as he stared at me, making me uneasy under his gaze.Xena’s voice trembled. “Wha

  • Reborn as My Enemy’s Child   Chapter 13

While Xena suffered daily, I celebrated three birthdays and turned three years old.It was winter.I sat by the window, snacking on peanuts and candy, watching the scene outside with curiosity.Xena was out there, shivering in a thin nightgown and slippers, scrubbing clothes and shoes in the freezing wind. It was almost pitiful. It was almost like that time she shredded my blanket and forced me to kneel naked in the snow, begging for her forgiveness. As for her friends, I had dealt with each one of them. Some went bankrupt, others lost their jobs.It dulled my hatred a little. But Blake still hung over my thoughts like a ticking time bomb. One day, the Lincolns received an invitation to a banquet.Felix told Xena, “You’re still her mother, and Zoe can’t be without you. So, you’ll be the one to take care of her.”Xena and I exchanged a glance. Our eyes were filled with ambition and resentment, both determined to see this through to the end.We had a deal. If she helped me, sh
