Chapter 1

“Ah…!”

The pain was unbearable.

Xena Smith poured boiling water directly onto my hand!

My eyes widened in gut-wrenching pain, and I let out a heart-wrenching scream.

“Xena… Miss Smith, please let me go.

“I’m begging you.”

I tried to fight back, but someone held me down from behind.

I looked up at the bright red dress in front of me, desperation in my voice as I pleaded.

Xena’s laughter rang out, clear but crazed.

“Someone like you, a nobody, and you dare to think you’re worth comparing to me?”

At her signal, another splash of scalding water hit my face.

“Xena, look at her face. Doesn’t it look like a cooked lobster?”

One of Xena’s lackeys mocked, and then I heard Xena’s voice, dripping with malice.

“Mia Zeller, you should be grateful. Trash like you doesn’t deserve a pretty face like this!”

She took out a sharp knife and started cutting across my face.

I don’t know how, maybe it was the pain or just a desperate will to survive, but I suddenly broke free from their grasp.

Panicked, I bolted, with Xena and her lackeys hurling curses as they chased after me.

I came to a stop at the edge of a newly dug pit filled with water on campus. I stood at the brink, my heart pounding.

Xena saw this and laughed. “Mia, you’re not actually thinking of jumping, are you?”

She and her group crept closer, the click of her high heels echoing like a countdown.

“If you’ve got the guts, go ahead and jump!”

“Mia, your dad’s just a lowly worker, and your mom’s a janitor. Even if you die, no one would care!”

She laughed again and added, “Now that you don’t even have your face left, let’s see how you’re going to get guys to notice you!”

Her followers sneered, “Mia, you can’t attract guys anymore. Why don’t you just jump?

“Go on, jump! We’d love to watch!”

To them, my life was as worthless as a piece of trash.

My family was poor. My dad was just a laborer, and my mom cleaned houses to make ends meet.

I had nothing, just decent grades and a somewhat pretty face. Maybe that was why I sometimes received random love notes.

But that was enough to make me a target for Xena.

I had not done anything wrong, yet I was labeled a “slut,” a “whore,” and a “worthless piece of trash.”

These insults were just appetizers for Xena.

Every day, I lived in fear, dreading what new torture she had dream up.

Would it be a slap, insect bites, or a whip?

Scenes of past torment flashed through my mind. It felt like my existence was just for their cruel entertainment.

What was the point of living?

I looked at my reflection in the water, blood dripping down my face in a hopeless stream.

The days ahead would only get worse.

I forced a smile, glancing at Xena as she taunted me, snapping pictures with her phone.

“Xena, I’ll see you in hell.”

As their laughter echoed around me, I leaped into the ten-meter-deep water pit. Blood blossomed in the water like a cursed flower.

Their laughter turned into shock, fear, and horror, but I couldn’t see it anymore.

When I opened my eyes, the strong smell of antiseptic filled the air.I shifted uncomfortably, and the movement seemed to wake Felix. His eyes were bloodshot, and when he saw I was awake, he quickly pressed the call button. “Are you okay?”I nodded, trying to shake off the grogginess. “I’m fine.”Then I asked, “What about Blake? Is he in jail? And what about Xena?”“Xena’s badly injured. She’s paralyzed from the neck down. Blake crashed the car into a bridge. He hurt his hand but got arrested.“But he held onto you the whole time. You didn’t get hurt.“You just passed out from the shock and have a few minor scrapes.”I was a bit surprised. I didn’t think he would actually try to crash the car. But I was glad he survived. Now he would face justice. I had already come to terms with dying. If taking down a monster like him was the price, I was willing to pay it.And Blake? He always claimed to love me, but his actions never matched his words. Maybe, in those final moments, he

The car sped down the highway. I was in Blake’s arms, while Xena sat in the passenger seat.I had done everything I could to stall them, and finally, I saw the flash of police lights in the rearview mirror. I had called 911 the moment Leo started driving off the usual route.Panicking, Blake knocked Felix unconscious and dragged Xena and me into his car.In the darkness, Blake let out a cold laugh. “Xena, I’ve given you so many chances, and this is how you repay me? Impressive.”Xena was trembling. “Blake, I did exactly what you asked. I brought her out for you!“Please, for the sake of our parents, don’t make this harder for me.”Blake scoffed, his voice deep and threatening. “You’re useless as a pawn and a failure as a tool. I’m done with you.”There was a struggle and the sound of screaming. A rush of cold air hit me, and when I opened my eyes, I saw Xena being pushed out of the car. Her desperate cries echoed in the night.I was stunned. I knew Blake was twisted, but I didn

People who had been trying to cozy up to Felix quickly stepped back. A circle of onlookers watched Blake with amused smirks, like he was the evening’s entertainment.Felix sneered. “Mr. Smith, don’t throw around baseless accusations. I’m an honest businessman.”Blake snapped, “Cut the crap! You knew that land was protected for historical preservation, but you pretended to bid against me just to drive me into bankruptcy!”Felix listened calmly, then smirked. “Even if I knew about it, so what?”“Damn it! Just wait. I’ll make your life a living hell!”After the commotion ended, Xena handed me over to Blake as planned.Xena suddenly seemed nervous. “Are you sure this is going to work?”“It will,” I reassured her calmly.Soon, I was passed into a pair of large hands. I knew they belonged to Blake, so I pretended to be fast asleep.“Xena, what kind of game are you playing?” Blake’s voice was suspicious as he stared at me, making me uneasy under his gaze.Xena’s voice trembled. “Wha

While Xena suffered daily, I celebrated three birthdays and turned three years old.It was winter.I sat by the window, snacking on peanuts and candy, watching the scene outside with curiosity.Xena was out there, shivering in a thin nightgown and slippers, scrubbing clothes and shoes in the freezing wind. It was almost pitiful. It was almost like that time she shredded my blanket and forced me to kneel naked in the snow, begging for her forgiveness. As for her friends, I had dealt with each one of them. Some went bankrupt, others lost their jobs.It dulled my hatred a little. But Blake still hung over my thoughts like a ticking time bomb. One day, the Lincolns received an invitation to a banquet.Felix told Xena, “You’re still her mother, and Zoe can’t be without you. So, you’ll be the one to take care of her.”Xena and I exchanged a glance. Our eyes were filled with ambition and resentment, both determined to see this through to the end.We had a deal. If she helped me, sh

In the study, Blake looked at me with a mocking smile. “Mia, drop the act.”I shrank back, putting on my best innocent face. “Daddy, I’m scared!”Felix frowned, his expression darkening. “What are you trying to say?”Blake laughed casually before responding. “Felix, you’re a smart guy. Don’t tell me you haven’t noticed there’s something off about your daughter?”Felix’s face remained impassive. “Blake, if you have something to say, just spit it out. No need for all this drama.”“Xena just told me she thinks your daughter is possessed by someone else’s spirit. Xena believes she's some kind of cursed soul, like she’s out to destroy everyone.”“Blake, do you hear yourself? What is this? Why not say Xena’s possessed by some evil spirit too?” Felix scoffed, openly mocking him.“My daughter is smart because she inherited my intelligence. It’s that simple.“As for Xena, she’s acting like she’s lost her mind. I should probably have her committed to a mental hospital!”Blake ignored hi

“There’s a ghost! A ghost!” Xena screamed. Her eyes were wide with fear as she stumbled backward until she crashed into the eight-tier cake Felix had prepared. She fell right into it, and in that moment, I saw her reach for the cake knife. She wiped the frosting off her face. She saw me laughing and, in a panic, hurled the knife straight at me.Everyone at the party was stunned, frozen in shock.Just as the knife was about to hit me, Felix rushed forward and shielded me with his body. The blade slashed across his back, and blood immediately started to pour.“Daddy!” I cried softly, then burst into loud sobs.Grandma kicked Xena hard and rushed over, tears streaming down her face as she hugged Felix and me.The room erupted into chaos, with me and Grandma crying hysterically, and the whole place in an uproar.Seeing that I was unharmed, Felix let out a sigh of relief. Ignoring the pain in his back, he picked me up.He turned to Xena, his eyes blazing with anger, and said firml
