"What did you just say?" Ethan asked, and I immediately grew pensive. I didn't trust the moon goddess at all. What if she told me a term that was some kind of taboo in the werewolf world and made me ask Ethan, who in turn would kill me and bury my body because I offended him and his werewolf code of living?
What, it could be possible? As Murphy's law states, what can happen will happen. So, my fears weren't too farfetched, were they?
The next moment, Ethan was sitting in front of me, thanks to his werewolf speed. It startled me and made me jump in the air I was surprised.
Before I could reprimand him, he spoke, "Zara, what did you just say?"
"I asked what the term Batair meant but it's a touchy subject." In the few months that I had been here, I had learned that if I so much said one wrong word, it would send Ethan crawling back to his apartment and then ignoring me for weeks. I had no idea if what I was asking him was one such subject though, I guess I would have to take my chances.
"I know you heard me," I stated, my voice much more confident than how I was feeling.
"I will tell you what it means, but you will have to tell me where you heard the term first."
I nodded. "I told you about the dreams where the moon goddess comes to visit me, right?" He nodded. "When she last saw me, she asked me to ask the meaning of the term from you." Exactly how she made me prevent Harper from marking Amanda, how I outed Eva's pregnancy in front of everyone, and how I told Harper and his parents that the child in Natalie was going to be the next alpha.
"I think she wanted me to ask you this because she thought you would know. I mean, you being a scroll keeper and all. But it's okay if you don't." I smiled to reassure him. Honestly, it didn't matter to me if I didn't know what it meant, so I genuinely meant the words I said to Ethan.
"Oh, I know what it means."
"You do?"
"Yeah, the word is Gaelic and it means Strong Warrior," Ethan revealed while looking straight at me.
"Strong warrior?" I asked dubiously. It sounded way too simple, especially if it had something to do with the moon goddess. "That's it?"
"Nope. That's not it. It's a connection between souls. Like I told you before, there used to be a werewolf empire and so there used to be a lot of enemies who wanted to throw the white wolf off the throne. A kingdom doesn't run because of just the king, you know. There are a lot of people supporting the king. In the case of the werewolves, there was the Luna, the beta family, the family of scroll keepers, and many other loved ones. Someone who was a threat to anyone close to the white wolf was a threat to the throne because they could use that person for leverage."
"To solve the problem, the white wolves met at one place and prayed with their mates for a solution. The moon goddess heard their prayers appeared right in front of them and provided the solution. She told the white wolves that she would assign a capable strong warrior to every loved one who couldn't protect themselves, like newborn babies or dormant wolves. These protectors or bodyguards were known as Batairs."
"Batairs could be anyone. They could be your brothers, sisters, cousins. The only condition for someone to be chosen by the moon goddess to be someone's Batair was that they must have nothing to lose. They couldn't have any other distraction, like mates till the time they served the person they were chosen for."
"For example, if someone was chosen as a Batair for a child, he/she would protect the child till they grow up and learn to defend themselves. During that time, they would have a connection between their souls, where they could draw comfort and love from each other. When the child becomes capable of taking care of themselves, the bond breaks, their souls disconnect and the Batairs are rewarded."
"Most of the time, the Batairs found their mates right after they completed their duties and lived a peaceful life. Most of them remained in contact with their allegiant even after their bond ended."
"When a Batair was close to the age of their allegiant, they ended up marrying each other, provided of course, that the both of them were mate less."
"As the times became modern, the kingdoms dissolved, and the packs formed, the threats to the white wolves and their loved ones diminished and the concept of Batairs got forgotten in history. As far as I know and have read, whatever problems the white wolves experienced in their personal lives, they never let it get in the betterment of the pack's welfare. All the pack members were taken care of and the threats were less. Moreover, the alphas gradually started to let fewer people in their lives, loving only a few people. So, there wasn't any other need for special protectors."
"Also, the people who were chosen as Batairs were great warriors. Obviously, how else would you protect if you weren't a good fighter? And they served without caring for their lives. Did practically anything to serve their allegiance. They became their friends when needed, gave parental advice when the situation demanded, and even became lovers."
Ethan watched me as I slowly processed everything, he had told me. The moon goddess told me that there was more to Ethan's and mine's connection than just physical attraction but I had no idea that she had made a special protector/ bodyguard of Ethan for me.
As I thought about it more, it made sense. Batairs were the people who had no other distractions, which meant that they would never falter in throwing themselves in front of an arrow that was aimed for their allegiant. They could only do that if they had no family of their own or were cut off from it. At least, during the period you served. Also, you couldn't have a mate for the same period. Either the mates of the batairs were dead or they hadn't been found, because the biggest distraction for a werewolf was their mate. A werewolf would always choose their mate, which would hamper their abilities as a bodyguard.
Ethan was perfect Batair material. He was unattached to his family and mate and was thus, not capable of any other distraction. He had been a future alpha to a pack and a scroll keeper and thus, was meant to be strong.
And I was perfect Allegiant material. I was the mate to a white wolf and being a human, I was powerless against a werewolf. It made sense to assign me a bodyguard but did that mean I was in some kind of danger? I pushed the thoughts away and focused on Ethan as I processed what everything meant.
"What?" He smiled as he saw my surprised expression as I put two and two together.
"Ethan, the goddess said that there was more to us than just friendship and attraction. She told me you were my Batair." I whispered the last part, consciousness of how silly it sounded when it came out of my mouth.
Hey, Ethan! You are my special and magical bodyguard. How does that make you feel?
"What?" He sounded more surprised than me and it made me feel a whole lot better. It all sounded like a hoax, to be honest.
"Yeah, she told me that there was more to us than just some sexual attraction and that you were my Batair. She didn't tell me the meaning of the term. She just asked me to ask you because she knew you must know about it and you did." I bit my lip as I realized what I just said and resisted the urge to curse out loud. Did I just say that Ethan and I had sexual tension right to his face? Yay, Zara, go you!
"I'm your Batair! You know what that means, right?"
I shook my head. My mind was busy running and dying of embarrassment right now.
"It means I don't have to feel guilty about doing this." He whispered as he took my face in his hands and placed his lips on mine.
Without thinking, I placed my arms around him and pulled him closer.
~ Harper’s POV ~ She just hung on me. I couldn't believe she just did that. After months of no contact, she had the balls to give me a call, not let me say anything, and then hang up on me.I was sitting on the uncomfortable plastic chair in the waiting room of the hospital, reeling from different emotions, the majority of them being disbelief, anger, and hurt.My wolf was restless, he had heard the voice of his mate but it wasn't enough for him. He wanted Zara in his arms eight now. He wanted to see her and bet with her. I, on the other hand, was so damn angry with her that I had no idea what I would do if she were to walk in the room right now. She was hurt and insecure, I get that. But that didn't give her or anyone else any right to play with my emotions. I took a deep breath to calm myself down. I needed to remind myself that Zara was not here right now and letting her into my head and control my emotions would be a terrible thing. I would deal with her when o would face her. I
"She also told me where werewolves originally came from." I laughed and Ethan laughed with me.It has been three days since Ethan and I kissed and it's been bliss since then. Even though we haven't made out since, the fact that Ethan is my supernatural bodyguard has brought us closer. We talked about a lot of things, our families, our friends, our mates, our pasts, and our expectations for the future. It was refreshing to have such a connection with someone so far from home. It made me feel at peace and I could see that it made Ethan happy too. Ethan had wanted to take me somewhere so; I was sitting in the passenger seat while he was driving his car. We had been driving for twenty minutes when he confessed that he was intrigued by my interactions with the moon goddess. He wanted to know everything the goddess had ever told me. I had already told him most of the information she had given me and its aftermath but there was still a lot more to tell."Oh, come on! It's not every day a su
"You're going to show me your wolf?" I asked again, surprised by his words. Where did he get this idea from? I have known Ethan for more than three months and I haven't seen his wolf. I have found myself wondering what he would look like in his raw, animal form but I never had the guts to outright ask him about it. It was a weird conversation starter. How do you ask someone to show you their wolf anyway?Honestly, I never actually felt that level of security in my and Ethan's relationship, which could give me the confidence to ask him about it. Funny, how he brought the matter on his own, without any hint or nudging from my side."Yeah. Why? You don't want to?" Ethan joked, knowing fully well that I was jumping with curiosity and excitement at the prospect of his wolf.It has been a little over six months since I came to know about the existence of werewolves. Back home, I had seen so many pack members shift in their wolves and I had even ridden on two of them but nothing could take a
~ Harper’s POV ~It had been a week since Zara called me and I still couldn't believe that I would never see her again. She had explicitly stated that she wasn't going to come back but there was something inside me, a feeling maybe, which said that I would be seeing her soon. Honestly, I didn't know if I should be optimistic and believe this feeling inside of me, because that would mean that I was hanging to a thread of hope. I never said I wasn't desperate for her but I was also a realist. She was my mate and I loved her. I didn't love her because I needed her, I needed her because I loved her. I know that was quite cheesy of me to say that, but it was true. There were so many things happening at once and I was stuck in between everything. There was no easy way out for me. I could go after my mate, but I would be abandoning my pack, which had no alpha and was under the target of a rogue pack. Circumstances in my life had led me to a crossroads and I didn't know which path to take.
I was falling and floating at the same time. I huffed mentally, knowing what was about to come my way now. I was going to meet the goddess and I had no choice about it. After our last visit, when she told me about what was happening back home, I hadn't heard from her for a few days and I had breathed a sigh of relief. I couldn't understand why she had to come and give me information in installments. I mean she could simply tell me whatever there was to know and we could both go our merry ways. I could go back to my complicated life and she could go back to whatever it was that the gods did to pass their eternity. It never failed to amaze me how soft the grass felt under my body in this heavenly world. It was almost poetic. I wondered what would happen if I chose not to meet the goddess on the cliff but instead roam around the enchanted forest. I was curious about the secrets this heavenly place held and I would also escape from meeting with the goddess. Killing two birds with one st
I gathered my clothes as fast as I could, as well as all the necessities I couldn't live without. Everything else could wait.I was trembling all over md on the verge of a panic attack. My lips were trembling, my eyes were moist and my shoulders were ready to have a good cry. But I knew I didn't have the time, even though that was all I wanted. My travel suitcase was laid open on my bed and I was haphazardly dropping my clothes and essentials into it. I didn't need to be a neat freak right now. I didn't need my clothes to be properly folded and sorted by color. What I wanted was an easy getaway, to get on the road as soon as possible. It had been ten days since I talked to Harper when I told him that I was not going back home. How ironic that I was frantically trying to wrap up my life here, to do just that, return to my hometown. When I emptied my closet into the travel suitcase, I took a deep breath and felt a rush of emotions in my body. I look around the room which has been my
My father motioned for Aiden's father, Raphael, to speak, and what he said irritated the bubble inside me."We need to make Harper the alpha of the pack."I didn't know where he got this stupid idea in the first place. I know that he knew that to become an alpha, I needed to have my Luna with me. He also knew that Zara wasn't with me right now, so there was no way I could get the alpha position right now. It was basic werewolf knowledge and not some rocket science shit. My father scrunched his eyebrows in confusion. His pale face looked tired and withered and I hated to see him like that. Fragile in a hospital bed. But I also knew that I couldn't do anything about it. I was powerless here. Dad's healing was dependent on his willpower and his wolf's strength. I just hoped that it was enough to get my father in shape as soon as possible because I had a feeling these rogues were not going to rest for a long time. They had done considerable damage to the pack infrastructure and werewolf
~ Harper’s POV ~I snuggled deep into the duvet, grateful for the short amount of sleep I was getting at the moment. With everything happening with Zara, my dad, the pack, Katelyn, and the rogues, I have been on my toes for the longest time. Any little rest I could get, I was going to take it. No questions asked. My wolf felt relaxed too, as the faint smell of Zara surrounded us. My wolf took a deep whiff of her scent, hoping to wrap it around himself permanently. I shifted and turned my body around in sleep. I was stuck in the sweet limbo between sleep and conscious awakening. It was a sweet place to be.Last night, after my father had woken up and after the blasted meeting, I had let my wolf let off some steam. He had run for hours and was still surprisingly still feeling restless and ready to fight. I wasn't surprised when he had come to stop at the familiar house, after exhausting his muscles. I had resisted going to Zara's house to sleep for some time now. I had my reasons, one
Bonus Chapter: Natalie's POVI knew something was wrong when I didn't get my period for two months. I never had a smooth cycle so I wasn't troubled when they didn't happen the first time but their absence in the second consecutive month got me worried. My body had undergone certain changes I knew weren't normal and I was worrying myself to death, thinking about some kind of deadly disease that would kill me in a few months. Even though I knew that my immunity system was way better than a normal human's, I couldn't help but entertain such thoughts. I didn't tell anyone of my concerns as I didn't want anyone to worry because of my baseless concerns. Nonetheless, I booked the first possible appointment with the pack gynaecologist. I had prepared myself for everything, a tumour in my ovary, internal hemorrhaging of my uterus that would result in an immediate hysterectomy, or even breast cancer which would again lead to a complete mammectomy. But as I sat in front of the doctor and she ex
Bonus Chapter: Ethan's POVWhen you grow up as a werewolf, all you ever hear is the word 'mate', because people around you can't stop talking about them. Some elders talk about mates with a dazed but happy look in their eyes and you can easily tell how much they love their mates. When young people talked to mates, you could practically feel their longing and the love they had for their mates. When teenagers talk about mates, you can feel their desperation to find their mates and be one with them. Rejections in my pack were extremely rare and every werewolf lived happily ever after with their fated mates. There were no doubts, no questions asked because your mate could be the exact fit of your soul, your second half, and the one who you are supposed to live as long as you live. Growing up and watching my parents and pack members, this is all I had watched and learned, that a mate was for you to love, hold and protect till the end of your days. When you're brought up like that, the ide
EPILOGUE 3: HARPER'S POV (TEN YEARS LATER)It was three years ago when Mason was first teased by a classmate about the unusual arrangement of his parents. I had always known that as he was growing up, he became especially attuned to the fact that the way his family lived wasn't exactly normal by usual standards. There were so many unusual factors that they were bound to seem different to him and I wasn't exactly prepared for how Mason was coping with how different his family seemed to be from any other family in the pack. As the future alpha, it was essential to be a part of the pack because other people were often intimidated by the power you had and by the power you would have in the future. My father always taught me to be a part of the pack but always remember that you could never essentially be a part of the pack. And this is exactly what I had taught Mason to do; I had asked him to play with all the other wolf kids but always remember that in the future, he will be responsible
Epilogue 2: Zara's POVI could feel everyone's eyes on me, which instantly made me nervous. I hated feeling this way but I wasn't sure I could help it. I hated being the centre of attention and walking down an aisle and standing in front of all the pack members to take part in the Luna ceremony was exactly that, being the centre of attention. Harper had told me that since I was the true luna of the pack, the ceremony would be a little different and I wasn't sure how that would affect me as I hadn't exactly attended Natalie's ceremony. I weakly smiled at all the pack members assembled in the pack grounds and started walking down the aisle towards the raised stage at the front of the pack. I was barefoot to pay homage to the natural aspect of the pack and to respect the raw nature of the wolves. The grass was soft beneath my feet and I immediately compared the softness to the grass in the spirit world where I used to meet the moon goddess. Harper had instructed me to not look around an
Epilogue: Zara's POVA blush immediately coated my cheeks as I slowly woke up from my deep slumber. The bed felt too cosy and I couldn't help but snuggle against Harper's body. His amazing body heat and the tingles that danced all over my skin whenever we touched made me let out a deep, sleepy moan. I felt Harper stir beside me and felt his arm settle on my bare hip, eliciting a heady warmth to settle deep in my belly. His thumb gently caressed my hip bone and I moved closer to him, determined to have as much skin contact as possible and leave no space between us. Harper's scent surrounded me, which brought an involuntary sleepy smile to my face. Even with my eyes closed, I could picture Harper's slightly upturned nose as he slept. It was too hard to resist his adorable expressions so most of the time, I didn't even try. My head rested on his shoulder and my face settled in the crook of his neck. Without needing to open my eyes, I leaned forward and planted an open-mouthed kiss on Ha
I thought about it for so many months, because the act of being marked by Harper seemed final. It felt like a full stop and in a way, it was final, an end. I knew the meaning of being marked even before I had decided to go away when I had learned of Natalie's pregnancy. I had asked him to mark me so many months ago and he had refused. It seemed so long ago, Aiden's birthday party when he found out that Samantha was his mate. So much has happened since then, things that have made me value the most precious things in life, let go of grudges, and the importance of relationships. After all, I have been through, I believe I have grown as a person. Not just me either, I know that all of us, Harper, Natalie, Samantha, and Aiden have grown up and matured in a way that most eighteen-year-olds don't. Well, Natalie is nineteen years old and so is Harper, as of today. So, I want to stress the fact that the decision to mate with Harper wasn't a light one even though I know most people wouldn't s
I think what the moon goddess said somehow helped me get over Ethan's death. I was still wrung and grieving about him for weeks, don't get me wrong but thinking about how must be at peace somehow made it easy to bear his loss. If I were to believe the goddess' words, Ethan wasn't happy in his life and was lost because he had no apparent purpose. I like to think that he got the release he so desperately wanted and needed. Even after knowing all this, I still couldn't cope with the fact that I won't be seeing him every day. He had been my source of comfort and strength for so long, he was someone I could lean on. He had begun to understand me in ways I'd never thought possible. And his absence felt left like a big void and I wasn't sure I could fill it. I didn't know if it was possible to fill it. When Harper told me that Ethan wouldn't be getting a funeral like the pack members because he was a rogue, I had been so infuriated. I knew that what Harper was saying was a part of who he w
~ Harper’s POV~"You do realize that to break the bond between us, either one of us will have to complete the mating process and mark our mates," I remarked and watched as Natalie nodded her head in acknowledgment. We had just gotten back after performing the final rites of the pack warriors who had lost their lives from the battle with the rogues. Needless to say, we needed some time to regain our bearings before we mingled with the rest of the world. I had done it before when my father was fighting for his life and I still found it jarring to my being, to perform the final rites of the werewolves who lose their lives. I couldn't imagine how Natalie must be feeling as it was her first time dealing with this ceremony. And hopefully, the last time. "I know," she said and we didn't speak for a few moments. I sincerely hoped that it would get easier with time, performing this ritual. It certainly hurt more when I knew that the pack members were paying for the mistakes my father committe
When I came to my senses, I immediately knew that Harper wasn't in the bed with me. I had lost consciousness when I was engulfed in his body heat, with his arms wrapped around me. The loss of his presence was so pronounced that I didn't want to open my eyes. It felt like he was the only reason I wasn't emotionally breaking down right now. A very big part of me wanted to be near him right now and the fact that he wasn't here with me disappointed me a lot. Even in my dreams, I had expected him to be here with me, helping me get over my loss. I wanted to never open my eyes and I was glad the room was shrouded in darkness. My neck prickled in awareness and I became aware of someone sitting in the room and even though, the threat of the rogues was over, I suddenly felt unsafe. "I know you are awake, Zara." I recognized that voice and the fear immediately abated. I opened my eyes and got up in a seating position. I leaned against the headboard and regarded the figure of the soft figure of
