Evelyn's POV

Leonard followed closely behind me as I walked up the grand staircase toward the building’s entrance. The silence between us had continued from the car and grew heavy with every step we stop. My curiosity grew too with lots of questions on my mind. I glanced over my shoulder, unable to hold back my questions any longer.

“How did we get here? This place—” I gestured toward the expansive company estate that loomed before us. “The meeting ground? How?”

Leonard smirked faintly, his eyes glinting with amusement. “I’ll explain later. For now, you should focus on your presentation.”

“You can't dodge these questions forever, you know,”

“Well, I best enjoy it for as long as I can.”

I narrowed my eyes at his cryptic response but decided not to push further. Time wasn’t on my side. Nodding in reluctant agreement, I quickened my pace and spotted my father waiting near the doors. The sight of him brought me great relief, and I couldn’t stop myself from rushing forward to embrace him.

“You’re okay,” I whispered, the warmth of his arms grounding me.

“Of course I am,” he replied with a reassuring smile. “You ready for this?”

“I think so,” I said, my voice uncertain.

“You’ll do great.” He squeezed my shoulder before leading the way inside, with Leonard trailing silently behind us.

The air shifted as we entered the building, like a magical change of scenery. It was like my first day at high school; the fear, the thrill, the anticipation.

“Welcome,” I heard many of the staff members greet as we walked past.

The receptionist directed us to the conference room, where the company’s board members were already seated. The moment we walked in, all heads turned, and one by one, they rose to acknowledge our arrival.

The room buzzed with murmurs of polite greetings and nods of respect as we made our way to the designated seats. I glanced at the long mahogany table, the polished surface reflecting the overhead lights. Each seat was occupied by impeccably dressed executives, their eyes sharp and assessing. Most of the men on the table were elderly like my father, and as expected with age, their experience had grown.

The meeting began with pleasantries and introductions before diving into the day’s agendas. Topic after topic was discussed, from financial forecasts to marketing strategies. My stomach churned with every passing moment. It was more because of the different terminologies they used that I wasn't exactly used to. But a smaller reason was the fear of my presentation time drawing nigh.

Finally, the chairman announced, “And now, we’ll hear from Evelyn Wyatt, the new Business Development Manager for the Southern region. She’ll be presenting her proposed strategies for the upcoming quarter.”

All eyes shifted to me. I took a deep breath, gripping the water bottle I had carried with me. My father gave me an encouraging nod, his smile warm, showing his great support.

I rose from my seat, smoothing down my skirt and forcing a polite smile. “Good morning, everyone,” I began, my voice faltering slightly. “I’d like to start by apologizing for the delay in getting here. I appreciate your patience.”

I connected my laptop to the projector, my hands trembling slightly as I adjusted the settings. My slides appeared on the screen behind me, their colorful graphs and bullet points staring back at me. I needed to explain all of these to the basic understanding of these men. No, they weren't complex theories, but I had to sell the idea still.

Well, I was here already and I needed to start. I began speaking and my nerves betrayed me instantly. I stumbled over my words, hesitating and correcting myself repeatedly. A faint wave of murmurs rippled through the room, the low hum of side conversations seeping into my consciousness. I was embarrassing myself. It was obvious in their eyes and body language.

It was impossible to ignore the disapproving glances exchanged between some of the board members. The effect of their scrutiny pressed down on me, and my confidence began to waver. My throat felt dry despite the water I had sipped earlier.

From the corner of my eye, I noticed my father smiling, nodding slightly as if to say, keep going, baby girl. But his encouragement wasn’t enough to drown out the growing sense of inadequacy inside of me.

I paused, searching for strength, for something—anything—that could help me push through. My gaze wandered toward the glass walls of the conference room, and that’s when I saw him.

Leonard stood outside, his posture relaxed, his arms crossed over his chest. He was watching me intently, and when our eyes met, he smiled. Raising his hand, he gave me a small thumbs-up and mouthed the words, “Breathe. You’ve got this.”

It was all I needed and something shifted within me. Whether it was pride, determination, or the sheer refusal to let Leonard see me fail, I didn’t know. What I did know was that his simple gesture reignited a spark of confidence I thought I’d lost.

I straightened my posture, took another sip of water, and smiled at the room. “Thank you for your patience,” I said, my voice steadier this time. “Let’s dive into the key points.”

I turned to my slides and I launched into the presentation, moving through them with clear ideas on what I wanted to buttress. I outlined my strategies with confidence, using data and visuals to back up my points. My words flowed naturally now, and the room grew quiet as the murmurs faded.

The board members leaned forward, their interest piqued as I walked them through the complex aspects of my plan. Questions that once loomed over my mind were now met with clear, thoughtful answers.

I ended the presentation with a concise summary and stepped back, the room falling silent for a brief moment before breaking into applause. Relief washed over me, and I allowed myself a small smile.

I turned to glance at the glass walls, hoping to catch Leonard’s expression. But he was gone.

Evelyn's POV The hallway outside was empty and for reasons I couldn’t quite explain, the applause felt hollow without him there to witness it. I nodded politely to the board, took my seat, and tried to push the thought of him out of my mind. But his absence lingered like an unfinished sentence, leaving me with more questions than answers. Why did he leave? Why was he watching in the first place?I had to find him and ask these questions myself. “Can I leave, Dad?” I excused myself. “I need to take a tour of the company but I’ll be back shortly,” I added, hoping to avoid further questions. He nodded, a proud smile lingering on his face. “Take your time. You earned it.”With that, I made my way out of the conference room and into the long, well-lit hallways of the building. The offices were bustling with activity, the sound of keyboards clacking and low murmurs creating a rhythm that filled the air. I wandered aimlessly for a while, my eyes scanning each corner for any sign of him.A

Evelyn's POV The scent of freshly baked pizza filled the air, mixing with the faint murmur of chatter around us. I sat across from Leonard, a half-eaten large pizza between us, surrounded by crumpled napkins and two glasses of soda. Warm evening light filtered through the café’s windows, casting a golden glow over everything.Leonard leaned back in his chair, his jacket hanging over the backrest. His relaxed posture and easy smile made it hard to believe this was the same man who had been so intense just hours earlier. “You know,” he started, a playful glint in his eye, “for a city that’s supposed to be all business, the weather here is as unpredictable as it gets.”I laughed, shaking my head. “Tell me about it. One minute it’s sunny and perfect, and the next, it feels like we’re in the middle of a hurricane.”He chuckled, his deep voice warm and inviting. “Reminds me of someone,” he added, raising an eyebrow in my direction.I pretended to scowl, reaching for another slice of pizza.

Evelyn's POV The night air was crisp, a soft breeze brushing against my skin as I stood there, caught between Leonard’s calm demeanor and Caleb’s piercing gaze. My mind raced, wondering why Leonard was so composed despite the sudden tension that hung in the air. And Caleb—why didn’t he seem fazed by the sight of us together? Was he genuinely unbothered, or was he just putting on a polite front out of respect? Questions swirled in my head like a storm, each more confusing than the last.“Evelyn,” Caleb called again, his voice sharper this time, pulling me from my thoughts. I turned to him and forced a small smile. “Caleb, hi,” I said, trying to sound as casual as possible. His gaze narrowed slightly. “I've been calling. Why weren’t you answering your phone?”I tilted my head, feigning ignorance. “I didn’t see any calls,” I replied evenly.“That’s strange,” he said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out his phone. “I called you five times.”“Well, I guess I didn’t hear them,” I sho

Evelyn’s POVThe cold night seemed to seep into my skin as Caleb stared at me down. His frustration was practically tangible, but I refused to let it shake me. This wasn’t the first time he’d tried to demand explanations from me, and I was determined it would be the last.“Why were you with him?” He threw at me the moment he was sure it was just us. “With who?” I asked, feigning ignorance. It was deliberately instigated to anger him. “Don’t play with me, Eve. Why were you with my uncle at a restaurant today?” Caleb’s tone was sharp, his words clipped.I sighed heavily, crossing my arms. “Does it matter?”“Yes, it does,” he shot back, his voice rising slightly. “And why did I have to hear about your trip from a coworker instead of you telling me yourself? Do you have any idea how that made me feel?”I took a step back, needing to put some distance between us. “Caleb, this is too much. You’re not entitled to an explanation about my every move.”His expression darkened, the muscles in

Evelyn's POVI sat on the chair, debating to myself. Should I let Leonard in or not?. The knock was now consistent but I just sat unmoved, endeavoring to make a better decision. My heart pounding in my chest. The knocking was gentle but insistent. I had expected him to give up since I didn't respond to the knocks, at that point I wanted to be left alone with my thoughts, but it seemed he wasn't one to give up easily. With very little to no visibly expression on my face I stood up and made to unlock the door, the moment I had spent with him earlier washed through my body which made me halted dead on track, I stood for as long as i can't remember and reflected through the moment, and I let out a little smile before proceeding to open the door.My mind was up for a game with me, I stopped again after a step, I can't tell how I feel, but whatever it is, it was real, right then I stood reminiscing on my life with Henderson lately, “No fairy tale would be better” I thought deeply to myself.

Evelyn's POV.I woke up the next morning feeling very refreshed as though nothing happened yesterday, the soft sunlight streaming through the windows and casting a warm glow over my room. It was a soothing Atmosphere, as I lay in bed. But this atmosphere was shattered when Caleb crossed my mind. I couldn't help but curse in frustration. I tried to shove away any thought of Caleb that morning and not dwell on my problems with him, from where I stand, I'm not giving him a room to hover in my mind. Musing about Caleb was as bad as plummeting to a new low. Especially now that I have so much to look forward to, not now, if anything, the essential theme right now is to secure the stability and growth of my dad's company. “ I'll keep him right where he belongs” I thought to myself.I shoved the thoughts of Caleb away and made my way to the bathroom to start my morning routine. The soft glow of the lights cast a flirtatious ambiance over our dinner, and I found myself lost in his deep, mesmerizing eyes. Our gazes locked again, and I quickly looked away, feeling the tension rise. To ease the moment, I asked, “Why do you keep staring at me like that?”His reply was swift and shameless. “I was just wondering what else you do besides being insanely hot. EVELYN’S POV:It had been over two months since the failed surgery. My dad had been living on what felt like a miracle ever since. Each day with him was a gift, a fragile thread holding him here. Leonard, Mia, and the caregiver had been the pillars of support I leaned on during those challenging months.Ryan and River visited often, bringing small moments of joy, but today wasn’t about my dad or them. Today, it was my turn on the hospital bed. Inside the labor room, I lay ready—or as ready as anyone could be—to meet the life I had carried for nine months. The pain I felt was incomparable, beyond anything I’d ever imagined.I clung tightly to Leonard’s hand. He stood beside me, his calm voice trying to pierce through my haze of agony. “You’re doing so well, babe. Just a little more.”A doctor—or maybe a nurse or midwife—entered the room, her expression calm yet purposeful. I knew it was time. She held a syringe, walking briskly toward me.“Hello, madam. Afterward, she requested to see the twins.“But they had left only yesterday!” I protested. The twins had become a big part of our lives, visiting from time to time. Even though they stayed at their grandparents’ house, their bond with Evelyn remained strong. They were so fond of her that they never wanted to leave whenever they came over. The feeling was mutual.“But I miss them,” she said, pouting her lips. “We won’t stay long; it’ll just be a brief visit.”“I know, but the doctor said you need rest.
