Evelyn's POV
I could feel the tension in the room as Dad debated with himself. Finally, he nodded reluctantly. “Only because I know you’ll do everything to help her.”
Leonard nodded once, standing as Dad kissed my forehead lightly before stepping out. “I’ll call you as soon as the doctor arrives,” Leonard assured him.
Once we were alone, Leonard pulled a chair beside the bed and sat down. His usual composed demeanor had shifted; his brows were drawn together, and his lips pressed into a firm line. My eyes had not fully opened, but he was quick to see they had blinked.
“You scared the hell out of me, Evelyn,” he muttered. His voice was low, almost to himself.
I blinked slowly, mustering the faintest of smiles. “I’m fine,” I whispered, though my voice cracked terribly.
“No, you’re not,” he replied, shaking his head. His eyes softened, but there was still a glint of frustration. “You’re stubborn, you know that? You push yourself too hard.”
I wanted to argue, but I was too drained. Instead, I closed my eyes, letting the quiet settle between us. He didn't know what had happened and I wasn't sure he'd ever hear.
Minutes passed—or maybe it was hours. I wasn’t sure anymore. The sound of soft footsteps broke through the haze, and I opened my eyes to see Leonard standing near the window, his phone in hand. He seemed deep in thought, his fingers tapping the edge of the device rhythmically.
“Why are you standing there like a statue?” I rasped, my voice barely above a whisper.
He turned, startled, and approached the bed. “You’re awake.”
“Barely,” I replied, managing a weak smile.
He crouched beside me again, his hand brushing against mine. “You’re stronger than you look, Evelyn. But that doesn’t mean you have to fight through everything alone.”
“Is that your way of telling me I should’ve asked for help?”
“Exactly.” His lips twitched into a brief smile.
Before I could respond, the door opened, and a tall, middle-aged man in a white coat entered, carrying a medical bag. “Dr. Hensley,” Leonard said, relief evident in his tone. “Thank you for coming so quickly.”
The doctor nodded, his eyes scanning the room before settling on me. “Let’s take a look, shall we?”
Leonard stepped aside but remained close, watching intently as Dr. Hensley examined me. The doctor’s questions were thorough, his manner calm and professional. He took my temperature, checked my vitals, and asked about my symptoms.
“It’s a high fever, likely caused by exhaustion and stress,” he said finally, packing his instruments back into his bag. “She’ll need rest, plenty of fluids, and a light diet. I’ll prescribe something to bring the fever down and ease her discomfort.”
Leonard nodded, his expression serious. “Can you stay a while, just to monitor her?”
“I can’t stay long, but I’ll check in again later,” the doctor replied. “She’s in good hands with you.”
After Dr. Hensley left, Leonard returned to my side. He pulled a blanket over me, tucking it gently around my shoulders.
“You should sleep,” he said quietly. “I’ll be right here if you need anything.”
I was too tired to argue, my eyes fluttering shut as I drifted off. The last thing I heard was Leonard’s soft murmur: “You’re not alone, Evelyn. Not anymore.”
When I woke up, the world outside was moving in a blur of greens and browns, the trees lining the road rushing past the windows. My body ached faintly, and it took me a moment to register that I wasn’t in bed anymore. I blinked, disoriented, and turned my head to see Leonard in the driver’s seat, his hands steady on the wheel as he focused on the road ahead.
“What—” My voice cracked, my throat dry from sleep. I cleared it and tried again. “What’s going on? Where are we?”
He didn’t glance my way, his expression calm, even indifferent. “You’re awake,” he said simply, his tone devoid of any surprise.
I pushed myself upright in the passenger’s seat, my muscles protesting the movement. “Why am I here? Where are you taking me?”
Leonard finally turned his head slightly, a smirk playing on his lips. “You should save your energy, Evelyn. Rest. You’ll need it when we get there.”
I frowned, my patience already wearing thin. “What do you mean ‘when we get there’? Leonard, you can’t just drag me out of bed and take me somewhere without telling me where or why.”
His smirk deepened, but he kept his eyes on the road. “Drag you? Hardly. You were out cold, and I thought a little fresh air might do you some good.”
“This is ridiculous,” I snapped, crossing my arms tightly over my chest. “You’re aware this counts as attempted kidnapping, right?”
Leonard laughed, a rich, amused sound that only irritated me further. “Kidnapping? Come on, Evelyn. If I wanted to kidnap you, I wouldn’t bother driving you myself. I’d have someone else handle it.”
His casual response only made my blood boil. I glared at him, but he seemed utterly unfazed, his demeanor maddeningly relaxed. “This isn’t funny,” I said sharply.
“It’s not meant to be,” he replied, his tone suddenly more serious. “Now, if you’re done arguing, why don’t you sit back and enjoy the ride? You’ll find out soon enough where we’re going.”
His refusal to elaborate only heightened my frustration, but I realized I wasn’t going to get anything out of him. Huffing, I leaned back against the seat, my arms still folded. The silence in the car grew thick, the tension between us palpable.
When it became almost unbearable, Leonard reached out and turned on the radio. Soft, melodic tunes filled the car, cutting through the silence like a balm. I recognized the song—a classic ballad my mom used to play—and for a moment, the familiar melody tugged at my heartstrings.
I glanced at him, surprised. “You listen to this kind of music?”
He shrugged, his expression neutral. “It’s calming. Figured you could use some of that right now.”
I didn’t respond, unsure of what to make of this softer side of him. Instead, I stared out the window, trying to relax despite the unease twisting in my stomach. The journey felt endless, each minute stretching into eternity as I waited for some clue about where we were headed.
Finally, the car began to slow, and I realized we were pulling into a long, tree-lined driveway. The building at the end came into view—a grand estate with sprawling lawns and a stately entrance that looked like it belonged in a historical drama.
Leonard parked the car smoothly and stepped out without a word. He circled around to my side, opening the door for me. “We’re here,” he said simply, his hand extended as if to help me out.
I hesitated, staring at his outstretched hand before reluctantly taking it. Stepping out of the car, I took in my surroundings, still unsure of what to expect.
Then I saw him—my father, standing at the entrance, looking relieved yet slightly amused as he watched us approach.
My eyes darted between Leonard and my father, confusion and irritation battling within me. Leonard had brought me to the meeting ground. Before I could say a word, Leonard’s smirk returned, and he gestured toward the estate.
“After you,” he said, a wide grin on his face
Evelyn's POV Leonard followed closely behind me as I walked up the grand staircase toward the building’s entrance. The silence between us had continued from the car and grew heavy with every step we stop. My curiosity grew too with lots of questions on my mind. I glanced over my shoulder, unable to hold back my questions any longer.“How did we get here? This place—” I gestured toward the expansive company estate that loomed before us. “The meeting ground? How?”Leonard smirked faintly, his eyes glinting with amusement. “I’ll explain later. For now, you should focus on your presentation.”“You can't dodge these questions forever, you know,”“Well, I best enjoy it for as long as I can.”I narrowed my eyes at his cryptic response but decided not to push further. Time wasn’t on my side. Nodding in reluctant agreement, I quickened my pace and spotted my father waiting near the doors. The sight of him brought me great relief, and I couldn’t stop myself from rushing forward to embrace him.
Evelyn's POV The hallway outside was empty and for reasons I couldn’t quite explain, the applause felt hollow without him there to witness it. I nodded politely to the board, took my seat, and tried to push the thought of him out of my mind. But his absence lingered like an unfinished sentence, leaving me with more questions than answers. Why did he leave? Why was he watching in the first place?I had to find him and ask these questions myself. “Can I leave, Dad?” I excused myself. “I need to take a tour of the company but I’ll be back shortly,” I added, hoping to avoid further questions. He nodded, a proud smile lingering on his face. “Take your time. You earned it.”With that, I made my way out of the conference room and into the long, well-lit hallways of the building. The offices were bustling with activity, the sound of keyboards clacking and low murmurs creating a rhythm that filled the air. I wandered aimlessly for a while, my eyes scanning each corner for any sign of him.A
Evelyn's POV The scent of freshly baked pizza filled the air, mixing with the faint murmur of chatter around us. I sat across from Leonard, a half-eaten large pizza between us, surrounded by crumpled napkins and two glasses of soda. Warm evening light filtered through the café’s windows, casting a golden glow over everything.Leonard leaned back in his chair, his jacket hanging over the backrest. His relaxed posture and easy smile made it hard to believe this was the same man who had been so intense just hours earlier. “You know,” he started, a playful glint in his eye, “for a city that’s supposed to be all business, the weather here is as unpredictable as it gets.”I laughed, shaking my head. “Tell me about it. One minute it’s sunny and perfect, and the next, it feels like we’re in the middle of a hurricane.”He chuckled, his deep voice warm and inviting. “Reminds me of someone,” he added, raising an eyebrow in my direction.I pretended to scowl, reaching for another slice of pizza.
Evelyn's POV The night air was crisp, a soft breeze brushing against my skin as I stood there, caught between Leonard’s calm demeanor and Caleb’s piercing gaze. My mind raced, wondering why Leonard was so composed despite the sudden tension that hung in the air. And Caleb—why didn’t he seem fazed by the sight of us together? Was he genuinely unbothered, or was he just putting on a polite front out of respect? Questions swirled in my head like a storm, each more confusing than the last.“Evelyn,” Caleb called again, his voice sharper this time, pulling me from my thoughts. I turned to him and forced a small smile. “Caleb, hi,” I said, trying to sound as casual as possible. His gaze narrowed slightly. “I've been calling. Why weren’t you answering your phone?”I tilted my head, feigning ignorance. “I didn’t see any calls,” I replied evenly.“That’s strange,” he said, reaching into his pocket and pulling out his phone. “I called you five times.”“Well, I guess I didn’t hear them,” I sho
Evelyn’s POVThe cold night seemed to seep into my skin as Caleb stared at me down. His frustration was practically tangible, but I refused to let it shake me. This wasn’t the first time he’d tried to demand explanations from me, and I was determined it would be the last.“Why were you with him?” He threw at me the moment he was sure it was just us. “With who?” I asked, feigning ignorance. It was deliberately instigated to anger him. “Don’t play with me, Eve. Why were you with my uncle at a restaurant today?” Caleb’s tone was sharp, his words clipped.I sighed heavily, crossing my arms. “Does it matter?”“Yes, it does,” he shot back, his voice rising slightly. “And why did I have to hear about your trip from a coworker instead of you telling me yourself? Do you have any idea how that made me feel?”I took a step back, needing to put some distance between us. “Caleb, this is too much. You’re not entitled to an explanation about my every move.”His expression darkened, the muscles in
Evelyn's POVI sat on the chair, debating to myself. Should I let Leonard in or not?. The knock was now consistent but I just sat unmoved, endeavoring to make a better decision. My heart pounding in my chest. The knocking was gentle but insistent. I had expected him to give up since I didn't respond to the knocks, at that point I wanted to be left alone with my thoughts, but it seemed he wasn't one to give up easily. With very little to no visibly expression on my face I stood up and made to unlock the door, the moment I had spent with him earlier washed through my body which made me halted dead on track, I stood for as long as i can't remember and reflected through the moment, and I let out a little smile before proceeding to open the door.My mind was up for a game with me, I stopped again after a step, I can't tell how I feel, but whatever it is, it was real, right then I stood reminiscing on my life with Henderson lately, “No fairy tale would be better” I thought deeply to myself.
Evelyn's POV.I woke up the next morning feeling very refreshed as though nothing happened yesterday, the soft sunlight streaming through the windows and casting a warm glow over my room. It was a soothing Atmosphere, as I lay in bed. But this atmosphere was shattered when Caleb crossed my mind. I couldn't help but curse in frustration. I tried to shove away any thought of Caleb that morning and not dwell on my problems with him, from where I stand, I'm not giving him a room to hover in my mind. Musing about Caleb was as bad as plummeting to a new low. Especially now that I have so much to look forward to, not now, if anything, the essential theme right now is to secure the stability and growth of my dad's company. “ I'll keep him right where he belongs” I thought to myself.I shoved the thoughts of Caleb away and made my way to the bathroom to start my morning routine. As I brushed my teeth and washed my face, I couldn't help but think of Leonard. This time it was impossible to k
Evelyn's POVI sat across Leonard in the dimly lit restaurant, my heart fluttered. He leaned in occasionally, whispering words I couldn’t quite make out, his voice low and teasing. The soft glow of the lights cast a flirtatious ambiance over our dinner, and I found myself lost in his deep, mesmerizing eyes. Our gazes locked again, and I quickly looked away, feeling the tension rise. To ease the moment, I asked, “Why do you keep staring at me like that?”His reply was swift and shameless. “I was just wondering what else you do besides being insanely hot. If I had cereal here, I'd give it up just to spoon you instead.”I nearly choked on my food at his last comment. He grinned mischievously. “Whoa, slow down there. It’s not a race.”With a smirk, I leaned forward slightly. “Wouldn’t you like to go racing for pleasure afterward?” My voice was sultry, and I bit my lower lip just enough to tease. The effect was immediate. He shifted in his seat, visibly trying to collect himself but failin
EVELYN'S POV:Just when I thought I was finally catching a break from all the chaos, my heart pounded uncontrollably as I deciphered who had sent the message. I cursed under my breath in frustration. I hadn’t even finished dealing with Caleb and Dana, and now this? "Get ready for the battle you just began!" the text read.I stared at the screen in disbelief. Why was everything happening now? Hadn’t I already been through enough? Yet, as much as I wanted to break down, I knew I couldn’t afford to. Leonard had warned me before: staying strong was my only option. And I will abide by just that.Sliding my phone into my pocket, I headed to my room to gather my thoughts. I tried to act normal—at least on the surface—but my body betrayed me. My father noticed immediately that something was off when I got back. His concerned gaze lingered as I handed him the documents he had requested earlier.“Are you okay?” he asked, his voice tinged with hesitation.I nodded quickly. “Yeah, I’m fine.” I re
EVELYN'S POV:When I arrived at his place, he was sitting on the balcony, his shoulders slumped, staring out at the horizon. It wasn’t like him. I made my way inside and climbed the stairs, feeling a heaviness in the air. Something wasn’t right. And feared for the worst, but still couldn't say what could be wrong.“Hey, Dad,” I greeted as I stepped onto the balcony, forcing a smile. He turned to look at me, but his response was muted, his tone flat. My heart skipped a beat.As I walked closer, I noticed the small picture of my mom clutched in his hand. His eyes glistened with unshed tears, and it broke my heart to see him like this. “Hey, Dad,” I said softly, kneeling beside him. “I know you miss Mom. I miss her too, more than words can say. But you’ve got to take it easy on yourself. This—this won’t help you, Dad. You know Mom would want you to be happy. She’d want you to find joy, even in her absence. You still have me. Don’t you think I’m filling even a tiny bit of the space she le
EVELYN'S POV:Like the morning sun breaking through the horizon, his voice illuminated my day. He complimented me with a warmth that sent a blush creeping across my face. Though I tried to hide it, it was impossible. Leonard had a way of seeing right through me. “You look cute that way.” He said as he noticed the blush, and tucked me.I laughed as I reacted to it.“Sit,” I said, motioning toward the bed. I brought the breakfast tray up and placed it between us. We ate together, but the meal was brief; the clock reminded us both of the looming workday ahead.Once we finished, I gathered the dishes and headed to the kitchen. When I returned to the room, Leonard was already waiting for a bath. We stepped into the bathroom together, savoring a quiet, intimate moment before the rush of the day overtook us.Afterwards, we dressed and got ready to leave. My phone buzzed just as I reached for my bag. It was my secretary. She reminded me not to forget the files I had taken home to work on. “
EVELYN’S POV:He paused, his gaze piercing mine as though he was waiting for permission to speak. His intensity was palpable, but I said nothing. I just stood there, staring at him, my emotions swirling in a confusing storm of anger, hurt, and vulnerability.Suddenly, a wave of nausea hit me, and I barely made it to the bathroom in time before throwing up. My stomach churned violently, and tears streamed down my face as my body heaved. Leonard appeared moments later, crouching by my side. He helped me clean up without saying a word, his hands steady and comforting.“I’ll be fine,” I murmured, my voice hoarse. “Just… excuse me for a moment. I need to take a bath.”He nodded and left the bathroom, giving me the privacy I needed. The cold water from the shower was both soothing and shocking, washing away some of the emotional turmoil, if only temporarily. I took my time, letting the water cleanse me physically and emotionally. When I stepped out of the bathroom, wrapped in a towel, I not
EVELYN’S POV:My heart was racing as I scrolled through the images and the accompanying write-ups, each headline more shocking than the last. I leaned back in my chair, overwhelmed by a storm of emotions. Tears welled up in my eyes as I struggled to process everything. All I ever wanted was peace—peace I thought I had finally found with Leonard. But now, that fragile trust I was building had been shattered. How could he do this to me?I pushed myself up from the chair and trudged back to the bedroom, collapsing onto the bed. I lay there, trying to make sense of it all, but my mind had reached its limit. No clear thoughts emerged; only a chaotic swirl of hurt and frustration. I tried to sleep, hoping it would bring me some relief, but the turmoil inside me wouldn’t let me let sleep intervene.Frustrated, I got up and began pacing the room. My anger bubbled over, and I grabbed nearby items, smashing them against the walls. The destruction brought no solace, just more emptiness. Desperat
EVELYN’S POV:We walked out of the restaurant, the crowd still waiting outside. I tried to hide my tear-streaked face as we passed through them. When we reached the car, Leonard opened the door for me. I entered, and he followed. And he ordered the driver to move the car.The only sound in the car was the soft hum of the engine and my quiet sobs. How could I have known that Leonard was only taking me for a ride and would eventually break my heart? Caleb was right all along. I remembered his warning, how he’d told me to be careful. Even though we were not cool, I regretted not listening to him.Tears continued to flow as helplessness overwhelmed me."Evelyn, this isn’t what you think. Please let me explain," Leonard pleaded, his voice calm yet desperate. His words only fueled my anger. "Please, Leonard, take me home and spare me the lies. You never even asked me out officially! I only assumed things. How foolish could I have been?" I said, my voice trembling through my tears."Evelyn,
EVELYN'S POVI couldn't help but catch Leonard's glances every now and then. He could barely take his eyes off me, and I felt my cheeks warm with shyness as a blush crept over my face."Why are you staring like that?" I asked, still shy.Leonard looked at me with a deep sigh. "Right now, I feel like I'm getting a tan, 'cause girl, you're damn scorching.""Oh, right, but stop giving me those eyes," I chuckled at my last words. "I mean, you don't want to ruin my period do you?”"Wait, what eyes?" Leonard asked, leaning closer so I could see his eyes more clearly.I gasped. It felt like there was magic in his gaze. Leonard was a ten out of ten, and the more I looked at him, the more my heart fluttered. I was falling for him deeply. I looked away immediately, not wanting to be caught staring—or worse, drooling."I see. She gets a little shy," he teased, a smirk playing on his lips. "You can't really handle me, huh?"My whole face turned red, and I couldn’t meet his gaze anymore. He reache
EVELYN’S POV:The moment the door clicked shut behind him, I rushed upstairs, quietly tiptoeing as I neared Leonard’s room. I didn’t know why, but my curiosity burned—what was Leonard up to?As I approached, I caught snippets of his conversation through the slightly open door.“Listen, Mr. Watt,” Leonard’s voice was calm and firm, “by next week, everything will be sorted out. You’ll have your meeting with her. I promise you won’t regret this. Evelyn’s sharp, and you’ll gain so much from collaborating with the company. You just need to give us a bit more time. I know there’ve been delays, but trust me—right now, she’s not fit for an official meeting.”It hit me like a wave. Leonard had been managing my schedule, helping me when I couldn’t help myself. Mr. Watt should’ve been furious over these constant delays, but he wasn’t—because of Leonard. He’d been standing in the gap for me, silently ensuring things didn’t fall apart. But, I wondered if this was the reason behind Leonard's react
EVELYN’S POV:The sunlight cast a golden glow on my body through the curtains, entering directly into my eyes and forcing them open. I squinted against the brightness, disoriented. It was morning already, though the night had felt far too short. As usual, Leonard wasn’t in bed. I turned toward the door, half-expecting him to walk in with my morning coffee, as he often did. Ten minutes passed, and still, he didn’t show up.A wave of anger washed over me. Why would he just leave without letting me know? Tears stung at the corners of my eyes. I needed him around—his presence was my comfort. Had he left because I was on my period? The thought alone made me furious. If that was his reason, it was rude and lame. And I vowed to not speak to him again. But then I remembered how sweet he’d been the previous night. Could something have happened? My anger began to fade into worry, my mind swirling with a hundred possibilities.I snapped my fingers, trying to shake off the negative thoughts. “Wha
