Evelyn’s POV
The cold night seemed to seep into my skin as Caleb stared at me down. His frustration was practically tangible, but I refused to let it shake me. This wasn’t the first time he’d tried to demand explanations from me, and I was determined it would be the last.
“Why were you with him?” He threw at me the moment he was sure it was just us.
“With who?” I asked, feigning ignorance. It was deliberately instigated to anger him.
“Don’t play with me, Eve. Why were you with my uncle at a restaurant today?” Caleb’s tone was sharp, his words clipped.
I sighed heavily, crossing my arms. “Does it matter?”
“Yes, it does,” he shot back, his voice rising slightly. “And why did I have to hear about your trip from a coworker instead of you telling me yourself? Do you have any idea how that made me feel?”
I took a step back, needing to put some distance between us. “Caleb, this is too much. You’re not entitled to an explanation about my every move.”
His expression darkened, the muscles in his jaw tightening. “What do you mean by that, Eve? We have a thing going on between us. For Christ’s sake, we almost got engaged the other day.”
“We’re just friends now,” I corrected, keeping my voice firm. “And if you ever want to rebuild trust between us, you need to stop acting like you’re tracking my every step. It’s suffocating.”
He looked taken aback for a moment like my words had physically struck him. But the anger in his eyes quickly returned.
“You think I’m tracking you?” he asked, his voice low and accusing. “I only came here because your father was worried. He asked me to find you. A case that wouldn’t have happened if you didn’t sneak off like you had something to hide.”
I raised an eyebrow, skepticism lacing my tone. “Something to hide. Well, I would first forgive you said something like that and what sort of finding would require invading my privacy. What kind of search would require you using my phone’s GPS? That’s an invasion of privacy, Caleb.”
He opened his mouth to argue, but I cut him off.
“I mean it. If you really cared about me, you’d trust me enough to let me live my life without you constantly breathing down my neck.”
Caleb exhaled sharply, shaking his head. “You don’t understand, Evelyn. I’m trying to protect you.”
“From what, Caleb?” I asked, genuinely curious now. “From Leonard? He’s done nothing but be kind and supportive, which is more than I can say for you lately.”
His eyes narrowed at the mention of Leonard, his posture stiffening. “You don’t know him like I do. He’s not—”
“Not what?” I challenged, stepping closer to him. “Say it, Caleb. If there’s something I should know, tell me.”
He hesitated, his gaze faltering for the first time. “I can’t.”
I let out a humorless laugh, shaking my head. “That’s convenient. You want to plant doubt without giving me any reason to believe you. It’s manipulative, Caleb.”
“It’s not. It shows my care and concern for—”
“Care and concern my foot,” I raised my voice, unsure of what prompted it. “Know this, Caleb, I would rather take my chances with someone I don’t know or trust than with someone as insecure as you.”
His face hardened again, and he took a step toward me. His movements were deliberate, his fists clenched tightly at his sides.
For a moment, I felt a flicker of fear, but I refused to let him see it. Instead, I smiled coldly. “And now you’ve shown me exactly who you are.”
He stopped short, his expression a mix of anger and pain. “Evelyn—”
“No,” I interrupted. “We’re done here.”
Turning on my heel, I walked briskly toward the house. The sound of my boots against the pavement echoed in the silence, but I didn’t look back.
Once inside, I closed the door and leaned against it, my breath coming in uneven bursts. The warmth of the house was a welcome reprieve, but it did little to calm the storm brewing inside me.
I made my way upstairs, my feet dragging as exhaustion began to set in. When I reached my room, I shut the door behind me and sank onto the edge of my bed, burying my face in my hands.
The events of the day played in my mind like a relentless loop. This morning, I’d been so sure of myself, so focused on the presentation. Then, Leonard had stepped in—literally saving me when I couldn’t save myself. The memory of his calm, steady presence brought a small smile to my lips.
He’d gone above and beyond for me, even using his private jet to ensure I didn’t miss my moment. And then there was the easy conversation over pizza, the way he made me laugh without even trying.
But Caleb... Caleb had managed to sour the evening with his jealousy and mistrust. I couldn’t ignore the stark contrast between the two men. One gave me space to breathe, while the other tried to control my every move.
As much as I tried to push the thoughts away, they kept creeping back in. Why had Leonard left so abruptly tonight? Was he giving me time to deal with Caleb, or was there something else on his mind?
I reached for my phone, debating whether to call him. The thought of hearing his voice was tempting, but I didn’t want to seem too eager. What would I even say? Thank you for the pizza, and by the way, where did you disappear to?
No. That would sound ridiculous.
Instead, I set the phone down and lay back on the bed, staring at the ceiling. The silence of the room was deafening, but it gave me a moment to reflect.
What was I even doing? My life had become a whirlwind of emotions and tangled relationships, and I felt like I was barely holding on.
A sudden knock at the door pulled me from my thoughts, and my heart leaped into my throat.
“Evelyn?”
Leonard’s voice was unmistakable, low, and steady.
I froze, unsure whether to respond. Part of me wanted to let him in, to let his presence chase away the way my feeling were scattered tonight. But another part of me hesitated, unsure of what his arrival meant.
Evelyn's POVI sat on the chair, debating to myself. Should I let Leonard in or not?. The knock was now consistent but I just sat unmoved, endeavoring to make a better decision. My heart pounding in my chest. The knocking was gentle but insistent. I had expected him to give up since I didn't respond to the knocks, at that point I wanted to be left alone with my thoughts, but it seemed he wasn't one to give up easily. With very little to no visibly expression on my face I stood up and made to unlock the door, the moment I had spent with him earlier washed through my body which made me halted dead on track, I stood for as long as i can't remember and reflected through the moment, and I let out a little smile before proceeding to open the door.My mind was up for a game with me, I stopped again after a step, I can't tell how I feel, but whatever it is, it was real, right then I stood reminiscing on my life with Henderson lately, “No fairy tale would be better” I thought deeply to myself.
Evelyn's POV.I woke up the next morning feeling very refreshed as though nothing happened yesterday, the soft sunlight streaming through the windows and casting a warm glow over my room. It was a soothing Atmosphere, as I lay in bed. But this atmosphere was shattered when Caleb crossed my mind. I couldn't help but curse in frustration. I tried to shove away any thought of Caleb that morning and not dwell on my problems with him, from where I stand, I'm not giving him a room to hover in my mind. Musing about Caleb was as bad as plummeting to a new low. Especially now that I have so much to look forward to, not now, if anything, the essential theme right now is to secure the stability and growth of my dad's company. “ I'll keep him right where he belongs” I thought to myself.I shoved the thoughts of Caleb away and made my way to the bathroom to start my morning routine. As I brushed my teeth and washed my face, I couldn't help but think of Leonard. This time it was impossible to k
Evelyn's POVI sat across Leonard in the dimly lit restaurant, my heart fluttered. He leaned in occasionally, whispering words I couldn’t quite make out, his voice low and teasing. The soft glow of the lights cast a flirtatious ambiance over our dinner, and I found myself lost in his deep, mesmerizing eyes. Our gazes locked again, and I quickly looked away, feeling the tension rise. To ease the moment, I asked, “Why do you keep staring at me like that?”His reply was swift and shameless. “I was just wondering what else you do besides being insanely hot. If I had cereal here, I'd give it up just to spoon you instead.”I nearly choked on my food at his last comment. He grinned mischievously. “Whoa, slow down there. It’s not a race.”With a smirk, I leaned forward slightly. “Wouldn’t you like to go racing for pleasure afterward?” My voice was sultry, and I bit my lower lip just enough to tease. The effect was immediate. He shifted in his seat, visibly trying to collect himself but failin
Evelyn's POV.We were in a mansion almost the size of a castle. It was breathtakingly beautiful, adorned with exquisite decorations and lights. As we moved closer, there was a line of people dressed entirely in black, each holding an artwork that read, “Welcome, Miss Evelyn.”“Oh my God, Leonard,” I said amidst tears. “This is phenomenal.”The moment I turned to hug him, fireworks lit up the alluring sky, their booming sounds amplifying the magic of the moment. In that instant, I felt as though I had everything I had ever wanted.Leonard took me in his arms, carrying me as we entered the mansion.Everything inside exuded elegance and status. Before I could fully grasp what was happening, Leonard picked me up in a bridal carry and brought me to a lavish room. The room redefined luxury — its magnificence was hard to put into words. He gently set me down, and I hugged him immediately. He pulled me closer, and our lips met in a passionate kiss.I could feel the intensity in every touch, h
EVELYN'S POV:I tried to act calm, not letting them notice the turmoil I felt, but my body betrayed me. I never anticipated Caleb's visit. But then again, this was Dana and Caleb being themselves. My instincts went into overdrive as I processed the unexpected twist. A shiver ran down my spine when Caleb's eyes locked onto mine, a hint of a momentum playing on his face."Dana, what's going on?" I asked, striving to keep my tone neutral.Dana breezed past me, with Caleb standing close behind. "I hope you don’t mind, but I brought Caleb along. I thought we could hang out. You know, make it a little gathering, isn't that interesting?," she asked casually.I watched as Dana and Caleb made themselves comfortable in my living room. A lingering unease settled over me; I couldn't shake the feeling that Dana was up to something, and Caleb's presence only deepened the mystery. But I stayed calm."I don’t think I want to go out today. Maybe we could hang out some other time," I said, feigning ind
EVELYN'S POVWith my heart pounding and questions racing through my mind, I dragged my feet to the door and flicked it open. The sight before me rendered me speechless. I had planned to visit Dad after lunch, yet here he was, standing in front of me.He wore a distressed look, as though he had just received terrible news. His face was etched with devastation.Stepping aside, I motioned for him to come in.“Dad,” I managed to whisper, my heart sinking as worry consumed me.We walked into the living room and sat side by side on the couch. As we were faced by ourselves.“Dad, are you okay? You're good?Is everything okay?” I asked not giving him any chance to speak, my voice trembling with concern. He looked at me with a mixture of fear and sorrow, laced everywhere in him, “I’m fine, Evelyn,” he said, though his trembling voice betrayed him. “But I need to talk to you about something. You’re the only one I have in my life right now, the only treasure I can hold onto, you are a thousand r
EVELYN'S POVI opened my eyes quickly, sweating profusely, my body drenched in a cold sweat. It took me a moment to realize that it was all a dream. I rubbed my eyes, trying to shove off the vivid images that still lingered in my mind. I turned on the bed lamp. My eyes darted from one nook of the room to the other, searching for any sign of movement or presence. But obviously, I was alone.I took a deep breath, trying to ease myself from the tension I felt at the moment. It was just a dream, I told myself. But the memory of it still felt so real. I couldn't shake off the feeling of unease that lingered inside me.As I sat up in bed, my mind began to wander. Was it just a coincidence that I had dreamed about Dana and Caleb betraying me after what I already knew? Or was my subconscious trying to tell me something? I thought intensely, trying to analyze every detail of the dream. And I came to understand immediately that Caleb and Dana were up to something. I needed to act—I couldn’t sle
EVELYN'S POV:I stared at my phone screen, my eyes wide with arrant disbelief.“How?” I whispered, my voice trembling with shock. My presentation—the one I had poured my heart, work, and soul into—had been rebuffed.Everyone knew I had done well; the applause and nods of approval from the team still played in my mind, the smiles of satisfaction, and the congratulatory handshakes I received afterward.I felt beads of sweat forming on my forehead as I sat on the bed, trying to process the news. This doesn’t make sense.I noticed Leonard wasn’t in the room, but there was noise downstairs, which signified he must be in the kitchen, probably getting some water. My thoughts were racing. This was too much to handle within 24 hours—I hadn’t even recovered from my nightmare yet. not even a half way and now these.Leonard appeared with a cup of coffee, concern etched on his face as he noticed my current state. He thought it was trauma from last night’s dream. He handed me the coffee and tried t
Happily Ever After“Yes, I do,” Evelyn said, tears streaming down her face as she stood beside the love of her life, Leonard. The sun set behind them, casting golden hues across the beach, where a small crowd of family and close friends clapped in celebration. Evelyn’s heart raced as the pastor, with a gentle grin, declared, “By the power vested in me by the state, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride now.”Leonard didn’t hesitate. He pulled Evelyn close, capturing her lips in a deep, passionate kiss. His mother playfully covered her face, peeking through her fingers, while the crowd cheered and laughed.“Grandma, I want to join Mummy and Daddy!” Ryan and River said in unison, their excitement contagious. Without waiting for permission, they ran to the couple, joining them on the floor. Evelyn and Leonard embraced the kids, laughing as they all danced together when the music began to play.Though the ceremony was intimate, the guests in attendance were people o
Evelyn's POVIt was Leonard, he was carrying the baby, the excitement in his face before I slept off had vanished. “ Babe, what's going on?” I asked. But he didn't say anything, his head was just bowed down slightly, as if finding answers from the baby.My mind started reeling with several thoughts, I knew he had gone to see my dad, did he not like the child?“ Say something.” I said desperately.“ I'm sorry Evelyn.” He said but then paused again, his lips shaking. The door of the room opened again, and the Caregiver walked in.She was also cold. I became confused.“ Was anything wrong with my baby? I asked myself.“ Babe you have to be strong, I'm sorry Mr Wyatt. He didn't complete his sentence when I realized what he was trying to say.My dad was dead, Mr Wyatt was dead. My life was over, literally what came to my mind.“ Noo, no, say something else.” I said, tears streaming down my face.It became difficult to breathe. I was choking on air. I wept bitterly on the bed, Leonard trie
EVELYN’S POV:It had been over two months since the failed surgery. My dad had been living on what felt like a miracle ever since. Each day with him was a gift, a fragile thread holding him here. Leonard, Mia, and the caregiver had been the pillars of support I leaned on during those challenging months.Ryan and River visited often, bringing small moments of joy, but today wasn’t about my dad or them. Today, it was my turn on the hospital bed. Inside the labor room, I lay ready—or as ready as anyone could be—to meet the life I had carried for nine months. The pain I felt was incomparable, beyond anything I’d ever imagined.I clung tightly to Leonard’s hand. He stood beside me, his calm voice trying to pierce through my haze of agony. “You’re doing so well, babe. Just a little more.”A doctor—or maybe a nurse or midwife—entered the room, her expression calm yet purposeful. I knew it was time. She held a syringe, walking briskly toward me.“Hello, madam. Just relax and stay calm. You ca
LEONARD’S POV:Then I turned my attention back to driving. Even though this was supposed to be exciting news on a normal day, we couldn't celebrate it."I'm hungry," Evelyn said. I gave her a questioning look.I turned the car onto another route as we started looking for a restaurant. We eventually found one and walked inside. The meal was nice, and I realized I was also hungry. After eating, we didn’t leave immediately; we stayed for a while to relax. Then a call came to my phone. I took it out and saw it was a new number. Surprisingly, I hesitated before answering, wondering who it could be.“Good day, sir,” a voice said on the other end.I tried to recognize the voice but couldn’t.“I’m from the press hub,” the voice continued. My interest piqued. “What’s the situation?” I asked urgently.“We have three offers right now,” he said.A wave of excitement washed over me for a moment.“Alright, I need their details immediately,” I said and hung up.I turned to speak to Evelyn, only to r
LEONARD’S POV:"It's the court hearing; it's tomorrow. It had just slipped my mind," I said to her, my words unorganized."I'm famished," she said, ignoring the information I had just shared, as if she hadn't asked in the first place."Here you go," I said, serving her meal."Smells so good," she said, sniffing the food while closing her eyes.We had a quick breakfast. Time flew by, and before I knew it, it was the next morning. When I woke up, Evelyn was sleeping peacefully beside me on the bed. The only unusual thing was her large baby bump, which I had grown used to."Good morning, baby," I whispered in her ear and kissed her before getting out of bed.I went to the kitchen and poured myself a glass of water. After finishing it, I started making coffee for us. I was almost done when a familiar voice interrupted me."Good morning," Evelyn said with a bright smile. Even though we were indoors, she shone like the sun.I moved toward her, kissed her cheek playfully, and then kissed her
LEONARD’S POV:Her checkups and scan didn’t take much time. The baby was fine and Evelyn was in perfect condition. Though the doctor recommended so much rest. Afterward, she requested to see the twins.“But they had left only yesterday!” I protested. The twins had become a big part of our lives, visiting from time to time. Even though they stayed at their grandparents’ house, their bond with Evelyn remained strong. They were so fond of her that they never wanted to leave whenever they came over. The feeling was mutual.“But I miss them,” she said, pouting her lips. “We won’t stay long; it’ll just be a brief visit.”“I know, but the doctor said you need rest. You should get some,” I tried to convince her. But Evelyn wasn’t one to give up easily.Eventually, she succeeded in convincing me instead. I called the kids' grandparents on our way to inform them of our visit. As soon as we arrived, the kids ran out to welcome us. I scooped both of them into my arms and lifted them high. Only t
LEONARD’S POV:I adjusted the car seat and pulled her toward me. She tried to pull away, but she couldn’t match my strength.“Leave me alone. I hate you,” she said, hitting me violently. But I kept my hold firm on her. After a moment of crying and consoling, she eventually calmed down.“Evelyn, I promise everything will be fine,” I said reassuringly.“No, nothing is fine. He’s getting worse every day,” she replied, her voice frail. She clung to me and sobbed gently. “I don’t want anything to happen to him.”“Of course not,” I answered. When she was calm enough, I started the car and we drove to the hospital.“How are you, Evelyn?” my mom asked as soon as we stepped inside the hospital room. The caregiver was sitting on a chair, while my mom sat beside Mr. Wyatt on his bed. He was awake now, though he looked so weak and pale. He wasn't the Mr Wyatt I knew months back anymore. We settled in and tried to cheer Mr. Wyatt up. We had a good time that evening. It was the first time I’d seen
LEONARD’S POV:“I miss you so much,” I said to her, placing a kiss on her cheek and then her forehead.“And you had to do this?” she said mockingly to me.“Of course, I’ll do it anytime,” I replied. She giggled and hugged me again.“Good afternoon, sir,” her secretary walked up to us and greeted me.I responded, and then we made preparations to leave. Evelyn and I stayed entwined with each other the entire time. We all boarded the jet and took off.Evelyn’s face shifted slightly, and before I could ask her what was wrong, she said, “How is my dad?”I kept quiet for a moment, thinking of how to respond. “He’s steady for now,” I lied. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her the truth—not yet.“I can’t wait to see him,” she said happily.“Sure, you’ll see him soon,” I replied, trying to sound confident.Even though she appeared happy, her face was still marked with dark circles, and I could see through her mask. She was deeply worried about her dad.“My mom is also at the hospital; she came
LEONARD’S POV:“I figured you haven’t had time to eat,” she said, noticing the amusement on my face.As I ate, we had a little conversation, and then she asked, “How do you intend to break the news to Evelyn?”I slightly choked on the food and let out a faint cough. I was frozen for a moment. It was still a question that lingered in my mind, unanswered.“I don't know. I’ve thought about it several times, but I can’t seem to find a good way to say it to her,” I explained. My mom placed her hand on my shoulder and said, “Just take it easy on yourself.”“Thank you, Mom,” I replied and continued eating my meal. Then my phone rang suddenly. I quickly picked it up without even checking the caller.“Good afternoon, sir,” the voice on the other end said respectfully.“The project has been approved. I just received an email—have you seen it yet?” he asked.I’d been so busy I hadn’t even thought about work. I had almost forgotten I was waiting for an approval. This was good news. It was a multi
