Chapter 73

Elena’ POV:

My eyes were wide open, and I was taken aback by what had just happened.

What could we be talking about? Was I dumb enough to sign on some dumb papar, or was this a set-up?

I raised my head to look at Nicklaus and everybody. The bodyguards worked out of the room, and my eyes landed on everyone standing in the doorway.

I felt embarrassed, and I felt like the ground should open up and swallow me.

My father walked out of the room immediately, and Sarah followed him from behind. Irina and Zoey quickly walked out of the room, leaving me and Nicklaus alone in the room.

Tears rolled down my cheeks, and I didn't know when I started sobbing. Nicklaus gave me a daring look. He walked up to me, his eyes never leaving mine.

“Cut that shit and wipe these crocodile tears. Now I know what your mission is in this marriage. Do you know who I am that you are trying to steal from me?”

I took a step forward and held onto his hand. “Nicklaus, please. I have no idea what is going on,” I pleaded, my voice cracking. Tears rolled down my cheeks.

I raised my eyes and looked up at him; he didn't want to say a word. He was waiting for me to explain myself, but there was nothing to say. I wish I had something to defend myself or to prove that all of this was a set-up.

“Elena, you have 60 seconds to explain yourself,” he said, looking at the other side of the room. “Your clock is ticking; speak now or you face the consequences,”

I wiped my tears and took in a few breaths. “Nicklaus, I have no idea about this. I didn't buy shares. I don't even know me, Xavier.” I spoke, and my voice trembled heavily. “The only business I had tried to involve myself in since we got married was becoming a chef, I swear.”

“Your time is up,” he said and turned to me.

“You just lied again, Elena. You claim not to know Mr. Xavier when he knows you more than I do.” He paused and bit his lips. He rubbed his hair in frustration.

“Nicklaus,” I called; my voice ceased.

“Do not call my name. I never want to hear you mention my name again. I married you to save your family from debt and your father from going to jail. Is this how you plan to repay me?” he asked.

“You haven't honoured your own part of the marriage, and yet I still loved you. I fell in love with you, Elena. I made sure I was there for you. I wanted you to chase your dreams after you gave birth, but what did you do, Elena? You brought shame upon this family,” he shouted.

“You intentionally got rid of the pregnancy; you planned to steal from me; what more are you planning to do?” He asked.

I kept quiet as I sniffed. “Answer me, you bitch,” he shouted. His fist was tightened at his side,

“Nicklaus, you know me. I am not guilty of the allegations.” I spoke weakly.

He walked up to me and bore deeply into my eyes; his eyes were red. “For the last time, do not mention my name, bitch,” he growled.

I was startled as he spoke, and I burst into tears.

“You also have an assignment, and you refused to show me the results. You aren't even pregnant, which explains why you don't want to give me a child,” he said.

I shook my head. “I tried to get pregnant,” I cried out. “It takes a whole lot of sex to get pregnant. Not twice,” I said.

My heart was pounding, and my head was banging repeatedly. My eyes were red, and tears wouldn't stop streaming down my eyes.

“Elena, you have proven to be a monster. Now I see why you were abandoned at your wedding,” he growled. “You are pathetic.”

“Nobody messes with Nicklaus and goes away free, especially when you mess with my company. I tried to keep your secrets, but you couldn't clean them up. Get ready for the worst. Expect my wrath. I am ready to bring you and your family down,” he spat and walked out of the door, slamming the door behind him.

Immediately, I fell to the ground. I knew that my life and my marriage had ended without even knowing it.

“Elena, are you okay?” A voice called from the hallway. It was Zoey. She spoke gently on the other side of the door.

“Zoey, please not now. I need to be alone,” I shouted.

I stayed on the ground and cried my eyes out. I didn't know what to do.

I just wanted Nicklaus to come back to me so that we could sort out all of this. I shouldn't be going through all of this.
