The dialogue possibilities alone—all that sarcasm and shared trauma—make it incredibly compelling for writers who like their romance with a heavy side of angst and action. It feels real in a way that some of the cleaner pairings don’t.

The way fanfiction handles DC's massive universe always gets me. So much focus goes to Batman and the Justice League, which is fine, but some of my favorite explorations are in the dusty corners. It turned a magical artifact into a character with its own arc. That's the expansion that matters to me: taking a footnote or a single-panel background character and asking what their world feels like from the inside. The mainstream stories have to keep moving forward, but fanfiction can linger, and that's where the lesser-known heroes truly get to breathe.

Archive of Our Own is my usual starting point, but for something like this, I've had better luck digging through dedicated forums. The prose can be technical, but the authors really geek out on how different power systems would interact, which is exactly what I'm after for crossover battles.

FF.net still has a massive backlog if you use the right filters—search for the 'Crossover' category, select 'DC Comics', then sort by reviews or favorites. A lot are abandoned, but classics like 'With This Ring' (a Young Justice/Orange Lantern SI) or 'A Subtle Knife' (Worm/DC) started there. The tagging system is a mess, though, so it's a slog.
