Chapter 31

Chapter 31 Gavin Hawkins’ POV By the time I got back home, the sun was high in the sky, its heat prickling the back of my neck as I parked my bike in the driveway. Hunter’s words kept circling in my head: “Sleep with her and get it over with.” As if it were that simple. I knew better than to take his advice seriously. I stepped inside, letting the cool air of the kitchen wash over me. Iris was at the counter, slicing fruit with precision. She glanced up when I entered, her sharp gaze catching me mid-step. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” she said, wiping her hands on a dish towel. I hesitated, wondering if I should tell her about the dream. No—bad idea. The last thing I needed was her teasing me about Lyric. “Just tired,” I said, grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge. Iris raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “Tired, huh? You’ve been acting weird lately. Does it have anything to do with the new girl you’ve been hanging out with?”

Chapter 32

Gavin Hawkins POVChapter 32: Weird but okay "This party is boring," was the first thing that came to mind the moment I stepped into Keira McRae's vineyard. Something sweet hung in the air, soft jazz sounds floated into my ears, and the taste of red wine stained my lips. The party had everything; it was Christmas, after all. What was I doing here? I couldn't spend Christmas with him, though - it was a bad idea. I flicked my gaze to the Rolex wristwatch on my hand, another gift he gave me every year, which I ended up selling before New Year's. "Aren't you enjoying the party?" Keira asked, playfully rubbing my arm as she approached. I shifted uncomfortably, feeling turned on by the look in her eyes. It was obvious - I was going to sleep with this girl today, in her childhood bedroom. The sexual tension between us was driving me mad. "No," I said, taking a sip of my wine, keeping her in suspense. "I just don't like crowds." I told her honestly. As exp

Chapter 33

Chapter 33: one-time thing GAVIN'S HAWKINS POV "Coach, calm down," I said, trying to placate him, my voice smooth and even. "It's not a big deal. It was just a one-time thing." Coach's voice was incredulous on the other end of the line. "A one-time thing? Gavin, you're going to be a professional athlete. You can't just go around sleeping with random women, especially not the daughter of a wealthy and influential family. What if she gets pregnant? What if she sues you for child support?" His tone was stern. I rolled my eyes, feeling a bit annoyed. "Coach, I'm not stupid. I used protection. And besides, Keira's not some random woman. She's...complicated," I said, my voice trailing off. Coach snorted, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Complicated? That's just a nice way of saying she's trouble. Listen, Gavin, you need to focus on your game, not on getting tangled up in some rich girl's drama. You need to get your head back in the game." "I know, Coach," I repl

Chapter 34

Chapter 34: You Won the BetIf I had known how that day would play out, I would not have attended the party.I talk like I had a choice; it was Aaron's party for the team. As team leader, he decided to hold a party for everyone to relax before the upcoming back-to-back series of games in January. From their schedule, they were fully booked to exhaustion. I was exhausted from taking the staircase to class twice a week; how did they manage rolling on ice skates, wearing heavy gear? The party began an hour ago while I was upstairs on the balcony, obviously avoiding Gavin Hawkins. That was until Wren forced me downstairs. She wanted me to make more friends? As if she wasn't enough.I stood at the edge of the party, nursing a cup of punch as I scanned the room. Wren, my best friend and interpreter, chatted with a group of people nearby, occasionally glancing over to make sure I was okay.Just as I was starting to relax, Janice appeared beside me, a sly grin spreading across her face. Chapter 35

Chapter 35: Are You Sure? Lyric had kissed me over a bet with Janice. She kissed me for a hundred bucks. Only! Was I so cheap? Could she not have betted over three hundred grand or something? A lake house? What am I even saying? I should be angry over being treated as property, but I couldn't get that kiss out of my mind. "It was just a kiss, Gavin, stop gawking at her," Iris chuckled next to me by the bar. Her eyes were droopy from drinking. I lost count of how many cans she had consumed. "I was not gawking," I lied, taking a sip of my beer. By this time, it tasted like water; even the foam wasn't enough to refresh me. Iris had drunk herself to stupor; I needed to stop drinking so I could take her home. Hence, I tossed my can of beer into a rubbish bin then returned to her. Iris was talking to a hockey player from out of town; they were flirting with each other. His eyes were only on her cleavage. How could he make it so obvious? I had to fight the urg

Chapter 36

Chapter 36: He is out of your league! LYRIC SPENCER POV "You sure you want to do this, Lyric Spencer?" Gavin implored, panting. Before I could respond, Iris's voice rang through the air, breaking me from his spell. "Gavin, take me home." "What's wrong?" Gavin took a step back, shooting Iris a glare - a mixture of surprise and care. "Nothing," she pouted, her lips in a cute manner. I felt a pang of jealousy. She could grab Gavin's attention whenever she pleased. If someone was going to win Gavin's heart, it was Iris. He loved her. And she loved him. "What happened?" His voice grew louder and stern. I could see the anger ripples on his face. He was going to punch whoever hurt his friend - his love. Iris shook her head, tears filling her eyes. "No one, just that dude. He said I should give him a head, like I give to Aaron. That they are practically brothers since they are both hockey players." Gavin whispered a curse. "That motherfucker." His eyes

Chapter 37

Chapter 37: Stop undressing me with your eyesLYRIC SPENCER POV As I shut my computer, I felt a pang of guilt for leaving Viktor on read. But I couldn't risk him finding out about my muteness. I had grown accustomed to our online conversations, and I didn't want anything to change. I tried to shake off the feeling of unease and focused on getting some rest. But my mind kept wandering back to Viktor and our conversation. His words about guys losing interest in girls after sex lingered in my thoughts. I couldn't help but wonder if Gavin felt the same way. Was he only interested in me for physical reasons? The thought sent a shiver down my spine. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was in over my head. The next morning, I woke up feeling a mix of emotions. I was still reeling from my conversation with Viktor and the lingering doubts about Gavin's intentions. As I got ready for work, I noticed a text from Gavin: "Hey, Lyric. Want

Chapter 38

Chapter 38: if a guy wants you, you will knowLYRIC SPENCER POV He handed me his cup, and I took a small sip. The sweetness of the caramel hit my taste buds first, followed by the richness of the coffee. It was a perfect balance of flavors. I couldn't help but let out a small sigh of pleasure. Gavin smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "See, I told you it's good," he said. I nodded, handing him back his cup. *It's really good,* I typed on my phone. He grinned, taking another sip of his coffee. "I'm glad you like it," he said. Gavin took a bite of his creamy, chocolate cupcake, he swallowed and said "Let me order you the same. " I signed a thank you. Fortunately, Gavin understand some of my simple gestures. It would make tutoring him better. We sat in comfortable silence for a moment, sipping our coffees and enjoying each other's company. I couldn't help but feel a sense of ease with Gavin that I hadn't felt with anyone in a long time. As we fi

Chapter 39

Chapter 39: I'm Allergic to Fun LYRIC SPENCER POV Finally, it was New Year's Day. I didn't have a class with Gavin that day, and for some reason, it felt empty. Wren was spending the day with Grandma, while my aunt took her kids away for the day too. They went to New York for a job interview; Aunt Stephanie was trying to get a job away from Velmont. The police had not found Uncle, and she was worried Alessio would come for us next. I didn't blame her. Still, I couldn't leave Velmont, not yet. I had a year left in school and was only a sophomore. This house was the last thing my father left me; it had their memories engraved in the walls. I couldn't sell it, like Aunt was suggesting. I had to find a way to convince her, because the property would be in my name only when I turned nineteen. I couldn't lose that house, but losing my voice was worse. I stayed home, in my new pajamas, watching true crime documentaries in French. I was a sucker for subtitles. Wrapped

Chapter 40

Chapter 40: Don't Mistake Your Physical Relation for Love GAVIN HAWKINS POV As we sauntered into the house, we were welcomed with loud, upbeat sounds, and the mixture of perfume and liquor in the air. I recognized half of the faces in the room, and the other half barely looked familiar. In the crowd, I spotted Emilia, wearing a thigh-length, strapless red dress. When her eyes crashed with mine, a smile curled up her lips. She waved and began walking towards me, step by step. As she approached, I noticed Lyric grow stiff next to me. I followed her gaze to Emilia. I knew they didn't like each other, and Emilia was her biggest bully, but it was the first time I saw Lyric being afraid of Emilia. Was I missing something? "Hawkins!" Emilia threw herself at me in a hug, enveloping me with her feminine perfume. It was so strong, I was sure it stuck to my clothes. "Look shabby, it's not your fault, just the plankton you have stuck next to you," she said.
