     Chapter 31

    Gavin Hawkins’ POV

By the time I got back home, the sun was high in the sky, its heat prickling the back of my neck as I parked my bike in the driveway. Hunter’s words kept circling in my head: “Sleep with her and get it over with.”

As if it were that simple.

I knew better than to take his advice seriously.

I stepped inside, letting the cool air of the kitchen wash over me. Iris was at the counter, slicing fruit with precision. She glanced up when I entered, her sharp gaze catching me mid-step.

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” she said, wiping her hands on a dish towel.

I hesitated, wondering if I should tell her about the dream. No—bad idea. The last thing I needed was her teasing me about Lyric.

“Just tired,” I said, grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge.

Iris raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. “Tired, huh? You’ve been acting weird lately. Does it have anything to do with the new girl you’ve been hanging out with?”

“What are you talking about?” I deflected, twisting off the bottle cap. “You mean Keira? She’s my math tutor, remember?”

Iris smirked, leaning on the counter. “You know exactly what I’m talking about. You’re not as subtle as you think, Gavin.”

I took a long sip of water, stalling. “She’s just... interesting.”

“Interesting?” Iris echoed, her tone skeptical. “You’ve never called anyone interesting before. Are you into her?”

    “No,” I said too quickly.

Iris narrowed her eyes. “You’re a terrible liar.”

“You don’t just find her interesting? Or hot? Sex on two long legs,” she teased relentlessly. Noticing my serious expression, Iris laughed. “No worries, even I would want to sleep with her.”

“I am not sleeping with my tutor.”

“Yet,” she corrected, adding a wink.

What was it with this girl?

I couldn’t help but shake my head, chuckling. “I won’t mess it up. This is for the team and my future.”

“Uh-huh.” Iris kicked her legs in excitement, a boisterous laugh escaping her. It was nice seeing my best friend like this—not the sad, depressing Iris. Instead, the fun-loving and funny best friend I remembered.

“How long will it take for you to lose interest in this one?”

Before I could respond, my phone buzzed on the counter. I picked it up, relieved for the distraction. It was a text from Keira.

Keira: Hey, what are you doing for New Year’s?

I stared at the message, my mind flipping through all the ways this could go wrong. Keira had made it clear she wanted more from me, but I couldn’t give her what she wanted. Not when my thoughts kept drifting back to Lyric.

    Me: Not sure yet. Why?

    Her reply came almost instantly.

Keira: My parents are throwing a party. Come with me?

I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the keyboard. Keira was a safe choice—predictable. But that was the problem. She wasn’t Lyric.

“Who’s texting you?” Iris asked, craning her neck to see my screen.

I pulled my phone closer. “None of your business.”

“I know it isn’t. You’ll get bored of her soon anyway.” Iris shrugged nonchalantly. She hopped off the counter and headed toward the living room.

It made me think. What if Lyric was only a prolonged, temporary obsession?

    ---

    LYRIC SPENCER’S POV

The week flew by in the blink of an eye.

Next week was the festive season—Christmas. The day was two days away, yet I knew this was going to be my worst Christmas ever.

Uncle still hadn’t returned. We even lodged a complaint with the police, but they said they were trying their best.

Aunt Stephanie drank herself into a stupor, convinced he’d been killed and his body tossed somewhere. She was only waiting for it to be found.

I blamed every true crime documentary she’d ever watched with me.

What I thought? He was still hiding, especially now that Allesio had woken up from his coma. It was still a shock that he hadn’t approached me yet. I heard he was still recovering but could manage the basics like eating, breathing, and walking.

I also heard he’d lost both mandibular incisors and two third molars.

    ---

The next day, I went festive-season shopping with my aunt. My job had paid me enough to get everyone a $15 gift for the season.

We were going to cook lasagna for the day—the kind with fancy meat—and the kids, alongside their mother, would head to another town to visit their grandparents.

That meant I’d be the only one at home, which was why I’d be spending it with the Evergreens.

    ---

The day before Christmas, Wren picked me up, and we went to the mall. Hunter had invited the both of us to dinner.

Actually, he’d only invited Wren, but my best friend had insisted on bringing me along.

Wren and Minsoo (Shawn Hunter) were getting along well. She told him about the three of us being childhood friends, and he apologized for forgetting me.

He never outright said it, but I figured he hadn’t recognized me after I’d lost my ability to speak.

We ate at a fancy restaurant in the mall, the kind that gave out free mints (the fancy kind) and had a dress code. The portions looked like they were meant for a baby but were staggeringly expensive.

After lunch, Shawn had an appointment to keep, so Wren and I wandered through the mall.

“Why don’t we do some last-minute Christmas shopping?” Wren asked, lifting a black card. It was her father’s. Her eyes held mischief.

<< No. I don’t want to get involved in whatever you’re plotting. >>

“Come on, bae. We’re only going to spend a few thousand—he won’t even notice. You’re like a daughter to him, after all.”

She quoted what her father had said when he’d attended my high school graduation because no one from my family had. That day, he took us to the park. We rode all the rides and ate to our hearts’ content.

Mr. Evergreen was a great man with deep pockets. He loved and spoiled his daughter whenever he could.

Sometimes, I felt a bit envious of Wren. She had a comforting life, a sibling who was nice to her, and parents and grandparents who adored her. She wasn’t a freak like me. She wasn’t mute, shunned, or bullied to the point where suicide crossed her mind a thousand times a day.

Nor was she fat, forced to go on a diet every week, where even water seemed to add weight. It was so frustrating.

But I knew her life wasn’t as perfect as it seemed.

    “Earth to Lyric!”

I must have zoned out because Wren was waving both hands in front of me like a psychopath. My face burned with embarrassment as people watched us.

Out of nowhere, Wren began laughing, the melodious sound echoing through the room.

I held a finger to my lips, signaling her to keep quiet.

“Come on, Lyric! You worry too much about other people’s opinions.”

Of course, I knew I did. But there was nothing I could do to help my social anxiety.

Later, we arrived at another part of the mall. At the center was a man dressed in a Santa outfit. A line of kids and their parents queued, waiting for their turn.

For me, Santa had died the same day my mother had.

<< Why are we here? >>

“The year is almost over, Lyric. Do you remember the naughty list we wrote at the start of the year?”

    I nodded, feeling slightly frightened.

“Well, you have six more days to complete at least one item on that list.”

    << I don’t want to. >>

“You have to! I’m going to go on a date with Minsoo in hopes of losing my growing feelings for my brother, and you’re going to do the same.”

Reluctantly, I went over and dropped the list into the Santa suggestion box. My face reddened as I rushed out of there, feeling like a kid who’d stolen candy.

Something sweet hung in the air, soft jazz sounds floated into my ears, and the taste of red wine stained my lips. The party had everything; it was Christmas, after all. What was I doing here? I couldn't spend Christmas with him, though - it was a bad idea. I flicked my gaze to the Rolex wristwatch on my hand, another gift he gave me every year, which I ended up selling before New Year's. "Aren't you enjoying the party?" Keira asked, playfully rubbing my arm as she approached. I shifted uncomfortably, feeling turned on by the look in her eyes. It was obvious - I was going to sleep with this girl today, in her childhood bedroom. The sexual tension between us was driving me mad. "No," I said, taking a sip of my wine, keeping her in suspense. "I just don't like crowds." I told her honestly. As exp

Coach's voice was incredulous on the other end of the line. "A one-time thing? Gavin, you're going to be a professional athlete. You can't just go around sleeping with random women, especially not the daughter of a wealthy and influential family. What if she gets pregnant? What if she sues you for child support?" His tone was stern. I rolled my eyes, feeling a bit annoyed. "Coach, I'm not stupid. I used protection. And besides, Keira's not some random woman. She's...complicated," I said, my voice trailing off. Coach snorted, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Complicated? That's just a nice way of saying she's trouble. Listen, Gavin, you need to focus on your game, not on getting tangled up in some rich girl's drama. You need to get your head back in the game." "I know, Coach," I repl

I was exhausted from taking the staircase to class twice a week; how did they manage rolling on ice skates, wearing heavy gear? The party began an hour ago while I was upstairs on the balcony, obviously avoiding Gavin Hawkins. That was until Wren forced me downstairs. She wanted me to make more friends? As if she wasn't enough.I stood at the edge of the party, nursing a cup of punch as I scanned the room. Wren, my best friend and interpreter, chatted with a group of people nearby, occasionally glancing over to make sure I was okay.Just as I was starting to relax, Janice appeared beside me, a sly grin spreading across her face. A lake house? What am I even saying? I should be angry over being treated as property, but I couldn't get that kiss out of my mind. "It was just a kiss, Gavin, stop gawking at her," Iris chuckled next to me by the bar. Her eyes were droopy from drinking. I lost count of how many cans she had consumed. "I was not gawking," I lied, taking a sip of my beer. By this time, it tasted like water; even the foam wasn't enough to refresh me. Iris had drunk herself to stupor; I needed to stop drinking so I could take her home. Hence, I tossed my can of beer into a rubbish bin then returned to her. Iris was talking to a hockey player from out of town; they were flirting with each other. His eyes were only on her cleavage. How could he make it so obvious? I had to fight the urg

Gavin took a step back, shooting Iris a glare - a mixture of surprise and care. "Nothing," she pouted, her lips in a cute manner. I felt a pang of jealousy. She could grab Gavin's attention whenever she pleased. If someone was going to win Gavin's heart, it was Iris. He loved her. And she loved him. "What happened?" His voice grew louder and stern. I could see the anger ripples on his face. He was going to punch whoever hurt his friend - his love. Iris shook her head, tears filling her eyes. "No one, just that dude. He said I should give him a head, like I give to Aaron. That they are practically brothers since they are both hockey players." Gavin whispered a curse. "That motherfucker." His eyes

I had grown accustomed to our online conversations, and I didn't want anything to change. I tried to shake off the feeling of unease and focused on getting some rest. But my mind kept wandering back to Viktor and our conversation. His words about guys losing interest in girls after sex lingered in my thoughts. I couldn't help but wonder if Gavin felt the same way. Was he only interested in me for physical reasons? The thought sent a shiver down my spine. As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't shake off the feeling that I was in over my head. The next morning, I woke up feeling a mix of emotions. I was still reeling from my conversation with Viktor and the lingering doubts about Gavin's intentions. Wren was spending the day with Grandma, while my aunt took her kids away for the day too. They went to New York for a job interview; Aunt Stephanie was trying to get a job away from Velmont. The police had not found Uncle, and she was worried Alessio would come for us next. I didn't blame her. Still, I couldn't leave Velmont, not yet. I had a year left in school and was only a sophomore. This house was the last thing my father left me; it had their memories engraved in the walls. I couldn't sell it, like Aunt was suggesting. I had to find a way to convince her, because the property would be in my name only when I turned nineteen. I couldn't lose that house, but losing my voice was worse. I stayed home, in my new pajamas, watching true crime documentaries in French. I was a sucker for subtitles. Wrapped

A real magic trick? What did they even mean by that? I could do a simple card trick, but that wasn't going to satisfy them. Just as I opened my hands to sign a compromise, a voice interrupted from the doorway. "I think I can help with that." The thought of her hating me didn’t sit right. Stepping out of my Jeep, I hurried toward the Spencers’ front door. The garden was in full bloom, fresh flowers sprouting up from the neatly kept beds. The neighborhood was lively with the distant sound of dogs barking, the occasional chatter from passing pedestrians. When I reached the porch, I noticed the door was slightly ajar. I raised my hand to knock but froze. The thought of turning back echoed in my head. Instead, I stayed. Something felt off. Cautiously, I pushed the door open, its slow creak sending an eerie chill down my spine. The moment I stepped inside, an instinctual alarm went off in my head.

She had barely looked at me—barely acknowledged me. But those marks on her face? The scratches on her arms? That wasn’t nothing. Before I could think twice, my feet moved on their own. I shoved my results into my bag and followed her out the door, weaving through students who had no idea that my heart was hammering like a drum in my chest. Lyric walked briskly down the hall, her bag slung over one shoulder, her posture tense. She knew I was behind her. I could tell by the way her fingers twitched, tightening around the strap of her bag. I didn’t care. I wasn’t letting this go. “Lyric.” My voice was quiet but firm as I caught up to her. She ignored me. “Lyric, stop.” Nothing. She was heading toward the main doors—probably planning to leave. But I wasn’t letting he

We had a game in three days—I wasn’t supposed to be slacking off. Grabbing a bottle of water, I sat in the locker room, trying to rehydrate before heading home. My muscles ached from the drills, but my mind felt even more exhausted. The door swung open, and Aaron walked in, drenched in sweat. A towel was draped over his torso and another around his neck as he wiped his face. He was obviously heading to the showers. "You played dumb out there today. Is something on your mind?" he asked, his brows furrowing as he studied me like I was some puzzle he wanted to solve. Good luck with that. "No doubt, Sherlock," I grumbled, twisting off the cap and downing the rest of my water. The cold liquid was refreshing, but it did nothing to clear my head. Aaron scoffed, running a hand through his damp hair. "I don't even wa
