Chapter Fifty-One - The Sale

Luna hated assholes. And the fact that she was sitting across from one right now did nothing to improve her already sour mood. “I’m sure we can come up with a middle ground that would work for both of us here, Mr. Pierre,” she said, hints of her frustration ragging around the edges of her words.Clayton Pierre, owner of Pierre Memorial Ground, the gravesite where Luna’s father was buried, and where Clayton was planning on selling, sat across from Luna in her visitor’s chair. He was a huge man, with a rounded belly and enough weight about him to crush a heavyweight champion to dust. He had gray hair- which was more shiny silver than gray- round the edges of his dark hair, his skin was smooth as a baby’s and tanned like he sorbet every waking moment under the sun.He had eyes that seemed to be both bored and alive at the same time. Like he could easily switch from looking like he was listening raptly to whatever you were saying to being completely bored out of his mind. Luna had b

Chapter Fifty-Two - The Family

Luna took a deep breath as she stared at the closed door in front of her. She was standing in front of her mom’s house, she was about to break the horrible news that she had failed to convince Clayton Pierre to sell the memorial ground to her, to her mother and sister. Luna took in a painful breath. She wiggled her fingers nervously before turning the knob on the door and opening it. She went inside. Her mother was seated in one of the one arm couch in the living room, her sister paced. They both turned as she walked in. Luna’s heart sank at the hopeful expressions on their faces, and she watched as they both read the result of her meeting with Clayton in her eyes. Her mother’s hands went up to cover her mouth, they trembled. Ashley’s eyes flickered, she swallowed, and the most shattering evidence of her pain were the tears that sprang into her eyes. Luna’s heart broke.“I’m so sorry,” she whispered, standing where she was.“What’s going to happen to him?” Ashley asked, her lips

Chapter Fifty-Three - The Unexpected

“There’s really nothing we can do, Miss Jones,” Carl Dallas, one of her lawyers said to her. “Clayton has sold the land already, it’s a done deal, according to my sources.”They were in a conference room, the one Luna used for meetings with her staff. Luna sat at the head of the table, Carl was seated to her left, Rita sat beside him, two more lawyers sat to Luna’s right. She had them all on retainer to serve as her corporate lawyers. And all of them were looking at her with the same helpless look.Luna looked at Carl, she looked into his eyes. He was the most experienced of the three lawyers, she had hired him first and they were sort of friends. She was friendlier with Carl than the remaining two, and so he was the one she looked at now.“Who exactly is your source?” she asked.“One of Clayton’s lawyers,” Carl replied. “He told me they drew up the papers this morning.”Luna closed her eyes. This morning, she thought, she had had Clayton in her office just this morning. Paul’s c

Chapter Fifty-Four - The Help

“Justin,” Luna said, looking at Rita, the phone still pressed to her ear.“Are you okay, Luna?” he asked. “You sound off.” A pause. “Were you crying?”Rita stared at her with a surprised expression, and an ‘what does he want?’ question on her face. Beats me, Luna thought to herself. And then remembering his question, Luna sniffed and shook her head as if to clear the mental cobwebs that had formed there. “Justin, what do you want? I don’t have time for this right now,” she said, about to disconnect the call.“I know,” Justin said. “I heard about the memorial ground.”Luna’s brows furrowed. “You do? How did you know?”“I have…. sources,” he finally said. His tone tinged with regret. “I’m really sorry.”Now Luna’s bows furrowed in anger. “Somehow I doubt that,” she returned coldly.Silence. The line went dead silent for a few seconds that Luna thought Justin had hung up on her, but then he spoke up again.“I know you may not be inclined to believe me, but I truly am sorry,”

Chapter Fifty-Five - The Deed

“So once we conclude here, we will transfer all the documents with us to your lawyers and they’ll take it from there.”Luna still couldn’t believe the problem she had been trying to solve all morning was suddenly being taken care of with just one phone call from Justin. She was still struggling to believe that, and yet here were his lawyers telling her, in the way lawyers do, that it was indeed true. They had arrived at her office approximately an hour after her conversation with Justin, three of them, two female and one male, all sharply dressed and looking competent. Now they were seated around her conference table, her own lawyers were present too. In addition to Rita and herself.“If you would just sign here,” one of the female lawyers, obviously the leader of the pack, said to Luna. The second female lawyer slid a paper with the transfer details on it towards Luna. Luna glanced at her, then looked back at the first female lawyer, the speaker. Did these people even know the g

Chapter Fifty-Six - The Call

There was silence for a few minutes on the phone as Luna told her mother that they had the memorial ground in their name now. And then Luna heard her sob, softly and very low she almost didn’t hear it.Luna smiled, picturing her mother’s hand going to her mouth as relief poured through her. Luna knew her mother well enough to know how she would react to the news, and picturing her eyes shining with happiness even as they filled with tears, filled Luna’s heart with joy. A day that had started out hellish was fast becoming very fulfilled, her heart was bursting with joy and the fact that she knew her mom’s was too was just an addition. A very huge addition.Luna closed her eyes, she pressed her hand to the middle of her chest as her mother’s son continued on the line.“I thought they were going to- I thought-” Mira broke down, unable to go on.Luna nodded even though she couldn’t see her. “I know. I know, me too,” she said. Thinking of those few hellish hours after Clayton had lef

Chapter Fifty-Seven - The Debt

Flashback.Luna stopped at the entrance of the room the maid led her to. It was dark, the drapes were drawn, the only source of light were the two beside lamps glowing low in a corner of the room. She took a step inside, she glanced back at the maid as she took a step back. “Welcome home, Miss Jones,” she said and turned to walk away. She closed the door softly as she left, leaving Luna alone in the dark room. Luna turned back to look around the room, she couldn’t see much. Just a really large bed in the middle of the room, a dresser, two bedside tables, a really big wardrobe, from what Luna could tell. Slowly, Luna made her way towards the middle of the room, her eyes taking in everything. This was going to be her new room, the maid had told her. No one had followed her from the party, Moira and her husband, Logan, had rode off in a different car. Justin had gone off in another, with Jake. It had been Jake who had come to tell her they were heading off, a meeting that couldn’t

Chapter Fifty-Eight - The Complicated

PresentLuna took in a deep breath as she stared at the phone in her hand. What she was about to do was probably the hardest thing she had ever had to do in her entire life, and that was including having to leave her home and everything she knew behind to marry a stranger who hated her. But she inhaled another deep breath and took the plunge. She dialed. He picked up on the second ring. “Luna,” he said.Tremors ran up her spine. I told you, Rita, Luna thought to herself, just one word. God help me.“Justin,” she managed to say, her voice steady, even though her hands shook lightly on the table. She looked down at it, strangely drawing strength from the sight of it. Talking to him over the phone was better than face-to-face in any case. Here, she had some semblance of control, face-to-face would have been much more harder. And yet she had to ask.“Are you in New York?”“No,” he replied. “Actually, I’m in London right now, closing off a business deal.”“Oh,” Luna said. She sh

Chapter Fifty-Nine - The Heat

Hours later, Luna trudged up the porch steps to her home, bone-tired. The day had been long, now she just wanted to sleep deeply through the night. She didn’t want any intrusion from the day to interfere with that, so she left the curtains drawn as she made her way to her living room. She didn’t turn on any lights and she didn’t engage the locks, she just stepped out of her shoes and left them by the door. She dropped her purse on the sofa, making her way towards the kitchen island in the far side of the living room. There was a small bar in the kitchen nook, she took out a bottle of scotch and a wineglass. She poured the drink into the cup and downed it in one gulp. Normally, with how tired she was, she would have just gone straight to bed, but tonight, she felt like she needed the drink. Just one, kind of like her own little celebration. And, scotch had been her dad’s favorite drink.Thinking of that, Luna poured another drink into her cup. She lifted it to the picture of her dad

Chapter Sixty - The Release

Luna almost closed her eyes as she felt Justin’s hand on her cheek. It has been three years, six months and twenty-three days since she’d felt Justin’s hand on her face. And she remembered each day.She had told him she didn’t, but she did. She remembered it all, the thought of his touch had haunted her night so stunningly for months after their split. And now, with all the years of hurt and pain still between them, she was feeling his hand on her cheek again.“Justin,” she whispered, her heart tripping in her chest.“You don’t know how long I’ve wanted to touch you,” Justin said, his voice hoarse and deep.Luna’s pulse jumped at his words. What was happening to her? She wasn’t supposed to give in this easily, she wasn’t supposed to give in at all. Luna looked deep into Justin’s eyes. This was wrong. This was going against everything she had been drumming into her own head, her own mind, her heart, for years now. This was betraying herself. She turned away from him suddenly, sh
