Chapter Fifty-Eight - The Complicated

Present

Luna took in a deep breath as she stared at the phone in her hand. What she was about to do was probably the hardest thing she had ever had to do in her entire life, and that was including having to leave her home and everything she knew behind to marry a stranger who hated her. But she inhaled another deep breath and took the plunge. She dialed.

He picked up on the second ring.

“Luna,” he said.

Tremors ran up her spine. I told you, Rita, Luna thought to herself, just one word. God help me.

“Justin,” she managed to say, her voice steady, even though her hands shook lightly on the table.

She looked down at it, strangely drawing strength from the sight of it. Talking to him over the phone was better than face-to-face in any case. Here, she had some semblance of control, face-to-face would have been much more harder. And yet she had to ask.

“Are you in New York?”

“No,” he replied. “Actually, I’m in London right now, closing off a business deal.”

“Oh,” Luna said.
