“Okay,” I replied, trying to stay composed.
I directed her toward the small sofa near the fireplace. We sat across from each other. She was biting her lip again, and I could tell she was still on edge. I knew the conversation we were about to have wasn’t going to help, but I needed to know more about what happened that night.
“What do you remember from that night,” I asked.
She tucked a strand of auburn hair behind her ear and took a deep breath. “I remember the crash. Someone had purposely rammed the side of our car, pushing us over an embankment. I remember climbing out.” She looked down at her hands. “I was all cut up from the glass. When I looked to see if my mom had gotten out, I saw someone come up and grab her. I know they fought, but I was too scared to move.”
“Do you remember what they looked like?”
She shrugged. “In his human form, vaguely. But in his lycan form… Yeah. Yeah, I remember what he looks like.”
“That’s good, Willa,” I said as I stood from the chair. I moved to the console table next to the door. I searched through a couple drawers until I found a pen and notepad and brought them back to where Willa was sitting. “Do you think you could write down a description of him?”
She picked up the pen and started dragging it along the surface of the paper. I let her work at it undisturbed for a while, watching as she concentrated. She sat back in the cushions, pulling her feet up to use her knees for support. She would occasionally reach up to push away a curl that had fallen in her face or close her eyes as if she was trying to visualize a certain detail. I didn’t realize how mesmerized I was until she looked up and handed me the notepad.
I cleared my throat and took it from her hand. I looked at the paper to see a drawing of a lycan.
“This is impressive,” I said, admiring her talent.
“He was dark brown in color. His eyes were a little far apart, and had a shorter forehead than most. It’s something, at least.”
I looked back at her with a raised eyebrow.
“It’s easy to remember the nightmare you see every night for thirteen years,” she said, tossing the pen on the coffee table in front of us.
“And he was only after your mother? Not you?” I asked.
Willa fidgeted with her hands, biting her lip again as she looked everywhere but at me.
“Willa?”
“I don’t know if he intended to hurt me or not,” she said. “He was scared off before he got the chance to try.”
“Scared off?” That seemed unlikely. “By who?”
“Me,” she said, standing up and moving to the window.
“What do you mean you scared him off?” I stood and followed her.
“I shifted, okay?” she said, throwing her hands in the air. “I watched him standing over my mother and I was just so scared and angry and I just wanted to save her and I shifted.”
Like lycans, werewolves didn’t gain their animals until thirteen or fourteen years old. Occasionally you might see one shift at twelve but at nine? And to go through it alone, under such traumatic circumstances?
It was no wonder her aura was so strong.
“You attacked a full-grown lycan?”
She shrugged. “Almost took his throat out too. But he left me with these.” She pulled the collar of her shirt aside to reveal the deep scars from a set of claws on her shoulder, disappearing beneath the fabric down her chest. She sighed, running a hand through her hair. “It still wasn’t enough. She still died.”
Pain was etched deeply in her expression. Something other than memories was plaguing her mind, sending her into a trance-like state. Her face continued to contort as her thoughts tormented her.
I closed the distance between us, resting my hands on her shoulders. “Hey,” I called her back to the present. “We’ll figure this out.”
She looked down at my hand on her arm for a moment but didn’t pull away. I fought the small smile that wanted to appear and the desire to pull her closer. I didn’t want to push her too far again.
She looked up at me, her brilliant hazel eyes entrapped me as I tried to pick apart every emotion behind them. Searching for some sign of hope.
A knock on the door made her jump. She brushed my hands away when Damen entered, stepping back to the window. I couldn’t help but notice how empty my hands felt.
“Yes?” I directed at Damen.
“You’re needed in your office,” he replied. He glanced at Willa, offering a small smile.
“I’ll be right there,” I said to him and waited for him to leave the room before turning back to Willa. “I’ll be back later.”
I grabbed the sketch off the sofa and left the room. Damen was waiting outside the door for me. I nodded at the two guards and followed my beta down the stairs.
“What’s going on?” I asked. I blocked any mind links when I was with Willa, so I didn’t have any idea what this was about.
“I’ve got someone you should meet.”
My curiosity piqued as we made our way to my office on the other side of the castle. I walked in to find a male standing in front of the desk. He was looking around the room before he turned to us as we entered. I caught his scent as I closed my office door. He was a werewolf, but he was one of my subjects.
“Sir, this is Dante Rhodes. He’s a detective in this region. His skills are utilized by several of our local packs,” Damen introduced.
Dante bowed toward me in respect. “My lord, it’s an honor.”
“Likewise,” I said, extending a hand. “What brings you here today?”
“Beta Ambrose, sir,” he replied, shaking my hand firmly.
“You asked me to look into something for you, sir,” Damen stated, taking a seat in front of the desk as I moved around to my chair.
“I did.”
“I can only get so much information here, and I won’t be able to get anything in wolf territory. Even if I could mask my scent successfully, I’m too much of a stranger,” Damen stated. “Dante has actually worked a few cases that have led him into Avilvale.”
“I’m guessing you have connections within the Black Moon Pack, then?” I asked.
“I do,” Dante confirmed.
“Has Beta Damen told you anything about the case?”
“Only that you need information on a suspicious death.”
I nodded. I examined the male in front of me. His aura was strong, but he didn’t fit into any specific hierarchy. That wasn’t uncommon among the werewolves in Whearhal. Since they weren’t allowed a hierarchy for centuries, many still drifted between them or fell outside them altogether. That could be useful in the werewolf territory. There were other aspects of him that convinced me he had some capability in his field, and compounded with Damen’s positive reference, I was confident he could get the job done.
But could we trust him?
I was inclined to protect Willa’s identity as well as her presence here. Someone asking questions that led back to her could very well lead to someone discovering her absence back home. Someone we didn’t want to know. But Damen was right. We would have to bring someone else in on this, and another lycan wouldn’t be ideal. Everything we needed to know about Melanie’s death was in the Black Moon Pack. I had faith in Damen, and I trusted his judgment. At the end of it all, we would have to take the risk, and Dante seemed like the best man for the job.“We’re looking into the death of Melanie Carmine, the former alpha of the Black Moon Pack,” I said. “Are you familiar with the name?”Dante thought for a moment, then nodded. “This would be about… twelve — thirteen years ago? I believe I heard something about a car accident.”“That’s the public story,” I stated. “We’ve recently been informed that she was actually murdered. The accident was a way to get to her. I want the case reports and an
By the time the sun had started to set, I was so bored and stir-crazy that I was pacing the room. It didn’t help that I spent the morning reliving the worst day of my life. My head was everywhere all day. I had spent some time trying to get a layout of the lower levels of the castle, but I honestly didn’t think it would be helpful, even if I did get an opportunity to run. I exercised and did some solo training. I sketched some more. But nothing really kept my head from dwelling on everything that had happened the last two days. Two days.I was worried about my dad.My only hope was that he would reach out to my friends first. I didn’t have many. We were rogues, after all. But over the years, there had been a number of other rogues that took up residence near us. Most of them were younger, orphan rogues that had been cast out of whatever pack had housed them before they came of age or runaways. But they still seemed to gravitate toward our little corner of the world. I was always okay
I slammed the door shut behind me, not caring if I pulled half my scalp off as I forcefully tugged my hands through my hair. Wondering how I could be so stupid.I fucking kissed her.I couldn’t control myself, and I fucking kissed her. And it was amazing.I shouldn’t have even gone up there tonight.I threw myself into the armchair and stared up at the ceiling. The ceiling that put so much distance between me and my mate that it physically hurt.Damen’s concerns had sat heavy with me all day. He was right. Finding out that the alpha in the prophecy was my fated mate opened it up to a whole new avenue of interpretation. Since the prophecy had been delivered to me ten years ago, we had approached it as if the alpha was the threat. That she would kill me and take my throne. Any ruler can tell you that was always a risk to consider, prophecy or not, so I didn’t take it too seriously at first. But it was the part about the alpha ascending that started to bother me. It was an old term that
I finally slept. Not just the exhausted sleep from healing or the injury-induced oblivion of the first day I was here. I actually laid down on the bed, covered myself in blankets, and fell asleep. Even more, it was a dreamless sleep. I wasn’t visited by the recurring nightmare that plagued my nights since I was nine.I was still on the edge of consciousness when a tingling sensation registered in my dazed mind. It moved from my shoulder to my neck, then along my jaw. I hummed approval as I leaned into the pleasant feeling. It intensified as I was pulled further out of sleep. My eyes fluttered open, meeting Ferrin’s bright blue gaze. We both stilled, holding on to the moment for reasons I couldn’t explain.I broke away first. Sitting up in the bed as Ferrin removed his hand from my cheek.“I’m sorry to wake you,” he said softly. “I’ve got a busy day today, but I said I’d let you call your father this morning.”He held out a slim, black cell phone to me. I quickly grabbed it, holding it
Yesterday was no better than the day before. But I had managed to keep myself from going to see Willa last night. I didn’t drag myself away from crop reports and import/export proposals until nearly two in the morning, and I wasn’t going to wake her. Sleeping in my own bed was out of the question, though. If I couldn’t be with her, I would at least stay close, and I didn’t really care because I was actually able to get some sleep.Miranda had already brought some of my things to the lower suite. I had showered and dressed and was heading to my office when I came across Shawn, one of Willa’s security guards, on the stairs. He stopped and greeted me respectfully. He was heading up as I was going down. It must have been a shift change. As he passed, I noticed he was carrying a bag. A bag that seemed a little too big to have on a security shift.I tried to brush it off, but by the time I was at the bottom of the stairs, my curiosity was overpowering. I mind-linked Miranda, asking if she h
Austin was already waiting outside when I arrived. I didn’t bother to greet him as I pushed through the door.“I want Shawn removed from Willa’s protection detail,” I ordered.“He told me you kicked him off his shift,” Austin said, crossing his arms over his chest. “Why do you want him off? He’s one of the best men we have.“I don’t care. I want him gone,” I spat.“No.”“What?” Why was it so easy for everyone to tell me no all of a sudden?“We can’t take him off without replacing him with someone else. That’s another person involved in this mess. So, unless you can tell me how he has failed at his job, he stays.”I glared at him. I realized that Shawn hadn’t actually done anything wrong. He hadn’t even touched Willa. I suppose he was only doing what he was instructed to do. I started to calm down a bit when I noticed the look on Austin’s face. He was doing nothing to hide the smug smirk. I was about to say something when Damen entered the office.“What’s going on?” he asked, looking b
I was pissed at Ferrin’s behavior, but I also felt a sense of satisfaction. My plan had only been to ingratiate myself to the guards so I could coax information out of them, maybe talk one of them into getting me a phone. While I was pretty sure that was out the window, I made sure that Ferrin knew I wasn’t going to make it easy for him.But I was worried about Shawn. I didn’t want to get him, or any of the others, in trouble. I felt bad that I may have cost him his job. If I did, I would do whatever it took to make it right. After I had calmed down and was sure that Ferrin had left, I went to the suite door and knocked. No one responded. I knocked again. Still nothing. He had actually done it. He ordered them not to speak to me.That son of a bitch.Maybe I had let things go too far with that make-out session. But shit, I would be lying if I didn’t say it took way too much resolve to push him off me. I wanted to leave him frustrated and angry. To know that he couldn’t control or mani
I bounded down the stairs, wanting to get this over with so I could get back to Willa. I didn’t know what Damen wanted, but he said it was important. If it wasn’t, I would have told him to bugger off. I was finally making progress with Willa. I didn’t want to risk that by leaving her too long.I was on the landing one floor down when Damen came around the bend. I nodded toward the suite I had been staying in since we brought Willa here.I shut the door behind us once we entered. “This better be good, Damen.”He looked back at me, taking me in for a minute. I thought he hid a smile, but whatever expression I saw was gone before I could read it.“Dante called. I told him I’d get you. He’s waiting for us to call him back.” Damen pulled a cell phone from his pocket and tapped on the screen. I heard ringing as we waited for the call to connect.“Rhodes,” Dante’s voice came on the line.“Dante, I’ve got Ferrin here. What’s the update?”“I just made it to Moonacre. I’ve scoured through the n
Something was really bothering her. And it wasn’t the same anger or disappointment I had felt from her the night before. No, she seemed… nervous around me. Almost scared.I had never seen Willa be timid. I didn’t think she even had it in her.But whatever was causing these feelings, they were only directed at me. She had acted normally toward Rebekah and warmly toward Henry and the kids. She was a picture of sweetness and belonging. My gut clenched, imagining what could possibly have her acting so distant from me. I hated this. I needed to be close to her more than ever right now, and this is when she decided to avoid me. Frustration and even a little anger started to creep up on me. I went to the office there in my apartment and found the carafe of bourbon. I poured a glass and took a few minutes to drink it before I went back to Willa’s room.I gently turned the knob. Opening it, I found Willa standing in front of the full-length mirror in the corner of the room. I could see her fac
I didn’t sleep much longer after Willa left. The unease and anxiety that had been growing through the night had quickly seeped back into my bones. They had lessened for those few short hours I was able to hold her. But when she left, it was like a premonition of what would happen if I screwed everything up — if I made the wrong decision. We had gone through every single detail in Billy’s file that night. Scouring over every piece of information. We had relied heavily on Dante’s expertise, hoping he could shed better light on what we were looking over. With each passing hour, his thoughts were following the same path as Willa’s father’s. And with each passing hour, my mood soured even more. By two in the morning, Dante was so suspicious of what was going on that Damen insisted I fill him in on everything.I had reluctantly complied at the time, but Dante said this information did fill in a lot of gaps in the information. He went over everything again once he knew more of what we were l
Rebekah was right about the gazebo being a good place to escape and get some privacy away from the castle. We spent a couple hours sitting there while she told me about the people I would be meeting at my introduction dinner. She pulled up pictures from her phone to help me recognize them. By the time we were done, she had gone through over forty people of various importance, and I was feeling a little overwhelmed. But I also felt more confident about the upcoming ordeal. We decided to move on so that she could show me around the grounds a little bit more before we had to meet her family when they arrived. We were walking along the hedges when she asked me what I planned to wear to the dinner. I froze up when she asked.“Crap,” I said. “I actually have to think about that, don’t I?”She laughed softly at my mortified expression. “It’s okay. I would love to help you get ready.”“Okay,” I said with a grateful sigh of relief.“Don’t worry,” she said. “You’ll do just fine. And I highly do
I was really getting tired of having to hide in rooms whenever Ferrin was acting like a jerk. I didn’t regret my decision to stay with him, but all this was becoming a bit suffocating. I couldn’t handle it if Ferrin suddenly started keeping things from me.I paced around the room for a while before I changed into my pajamas and tried to go to sleep. But I only ended up tossing and turning for a couple of hours. Finally, I let out a frustrated huff and threw the blankets off of me. I was still frustrated with Ferrin, and I was mad that I missed him, but I was also worried. It was the kind of worry that just sat in the peripheral. You know it’s there, but you just don’t know why.But then again, we both had a lot to worry about right now. So, I was probably just overreacting.I climbed out of bed and made my way through the joining bathroom and through to Ferrin’s bedroom. I paused a moment to breathe in his scent, which was all over the place. I quickly started to relax. I crawled unde
Not long after Ferrin left, Miranda came in with a load of groceries to stock our little kitchen. She also gave me my phone. Apparently, one of the border guards found it in the woods where Ferrin “saved” me from the attack because it was ringing non-stop. Austin swung by and picked it up before heading back to the castle behind us.It was dead by now, so I popped it on the charger before helping Miranda make some sandwiches. I convinced her to stay and eat with me, knowing she probably hadn’t taken a break all day.“So, what are you going to do with your extra week of paid vacation,” I asked, moving on to my second sandwich after inhaling the first. I definitely must have been healing faster because I was starving.Miranda laughed. “Ferrin said you insisted he gave me a raise. Although it was entirely unnecessary.”“It was absolutely necessary. You have done so much for me since I got here,” I said bluntly, “and I can’t imagine this place would run a fraction as smoothly without you,
Arlo was still waiting outside when I left our quarters, but his expression was a bit less jovial than it was a few moments ago.“What did you do to get Damen’s knickers in such a bunch?”“What makes you think I did anything?” I asked as he followed me. Obviously, Damen had mind-linked him as well.“He told me I better get my arse to your office to make sure you haven’ done somethin’ royally stupid,” Arlo replied.Honestly, I didn’t know what I could have done. Unless this was about last night, but all my thoughts of sending Willa away had completely passed now. Everything had been going smoothly since we returned, so I had no idea what was going on. And it was pissing me off as well.I stormed into my office to find Damen and Austin waiting, both looking particularly displeased about something.“What the hell is all this about?” I asked angrily.“You tell us,” Damen said, dropping an accordion folder on my desk dramatically. It only took an instant to recognize it, and I cursed under
I picked Willa’s dress off the couch and helped her slip it up her arms. She went to start buttoning it up, but we both quickly realized there were several buttons missing. I chuckled as her shoulders fell with a sigh, giving me a disappointed look.“Oops,” I said with a shrug, not even about to hide my grin.“If you keep this up, I’m going to run out of things to wear real quick,” she said, shoving my arm playfully.“That’s not exactly an incentive to be more careful,” I replied.“Ha ha,” she said. “But I don’t have any…”I stopped her with a look.“Miranda.” She caught on quickly, shaking her head with a grin.“I told her to put everything in your room for now. We’ll move it whenever you want.”“She really does deserve a raise, you know?” Willa said as she started towards the bedroom.“Already taken care of,” I called after her. “Plus an extra week of paid vacation.”She turned around, backing into the room without skipping a step. “That’s my man,” she said with a wink before closin
I looked at him skeptically. “A rogue werewolf from Avilvale? Even keeping my alpha nature from them, I don’t see them being too happy about that.”“There will be those who will have an opinion,” Ferrin said casually. “But not all of them will hold it against you once they meet you. The council isn’t full of old lycans who are stuck in their ways. We have several that are around my age or have always been on the more progressive side, like my father and me.”“Like Lady Boucher?” I asked, not entirely successful in hiding the bitterness in my voice. I don’t know why she kept popping into my head since I had met her in the hallway. She just made me feel off.“No, the Boucher family tends to lean toward the old ways where lycans’ status was definitively superior.”“I’m surprised the council isn’t insisting you mate with her,” I said.Ferrin made a face. “They know any chance of that ever happening died a long time ago.”“What do you mean?” I pulled away, jealousy spiking through me. “Fer
My chest was swollen with pride in my mate. All I wanted to do was get her behind closed doors and show her how damn perfect she was. I was annoyed that Desiree had the audacity to speak to her Luna the way she had. By all rights, I should have been pissed. And I was at first. But after watching Willa eviscerate her in such a concise, effective, and tactful way, I couldn’t bring myself to care that much anymore.I thought back to that night I had imagined what would happen when the two of them met. I was in no way disappointed. And now, knowing Willa’s skill in a fight, Desiree would learn quickly not to disrespect my mate again. We finally made it to our private quarters, but we still had an entourage that I only felt a little guilty about wanting to get rid of as soon as possible. But I really did want Rebekah to take a look at Willa’s leg. And Damen, Miranda, and I had to discuss what was going to happen next so Willa could get an idea of what to expect over the next few days.My q
