Chapter 16

LAURA

I was eating my breakfast silently when a maid walked up to me with a bouquet of flowers. “Good morning, Luna. Someone sent these for you,” she said.

I was confused at first but collected it, eager to check the card. “Who is it from?” I asked her.

“I…I don't know. A guard just told me to give it to you,” she replied.

“Okay, you may go,” I dismissed her.

I started hassling the flowers, trying to get the card out but it somewhat got stuck in the flowers. “Where the fuck is it?” I tried looking for it, but it was stuck.

“Who is from?” Maxwell inquired. I looked at him with a sarcastic expression on my face. “Can't you see that I'm trying to look for it?” I told him.

He raised his hands in surrender. “Sorry,” I heard him mutter. I chuckled at his statement, finally able to get the card out of there.

“Who would even send you a card?” Sonia interjected. I didn't bother replying to her messages and just rolled my eyes and was finally able to open up the card.

‘I hope when these flowers bring a smile and brighten up your day just like you brighten mine.’

Alex.

“It's from Alex,” I scoffed.

She smiled. “Why don't you accept him? I mean he's crazy about you. What more is there to waste?” She inquired.

Her statement only sent my blood boiling but I just played it cool, ignoring her statement. “Emma,” I called a maid.

“Yes, ma'am.”

She arrived in time, standing behind me. “Do you need anything?” She inquired. I nodded in response and handed her the flowers. “Please, dumb this in the trash can for me.”

“But, I thought—”

I looked at her with a scowl on my face. “I don't like to repeat myself, Emma.”

She didn't say anything else and just nodded in response. “You can be harsh sometimes,” Sonia stated.

I didn't say anything and just ignored her statement. “Are you going to finish it up on time? We have to leave for a meeting,” I told her.

She nodded in response and continued eating. I can't believe that Alex would go this far. Sending me flowers? What a psycho! I didn't realize he was that desperate for the throne.

Sonia and Maxwell finished their meals. “You drive Sonia there. I gave some important issues to take care of,” I told them.

Sonia scoffed. “First, you rush us and now you're taking your time again?”

“Did you say something?” I asked.

She looked terrified at first but then covered it up with a smile. “I said you looked beautiful today, Laura,” she giggled.

I heard everything that she said but just ignored her. I have to get something from the library and don't trust anyone, especially Sonia, to follow me up there.

“I think it's better we leave now. We don't want to leave the councils waiting,” Maxwell told her.

She nodded in response and left with him, leaving me alone in the mansion. I made my way towards the library upstairs and started looking for the book I had seen earlier. It contained some information that could actually help me with finding the spectra.

“Your cousin seems to be a bitch sometimes,” I heard a voice that made me shriek causing me to fall off the ladder but luckily, Niandra caught me in time with her powers.

“You?!” I took a sigh of relief. “Why did you sneak up on me like that? You almost gave me a heart attack!”

She giggled and the next thing I knew, I landed on my butt. “Ouch!” I winced in pain, massaging my butt. “Why did you do that?”

“Relax, you were almost on the ground anyways. It's not like I made you break an ankle or something so stop overreacting.”

I glared at her but ignored her statement and continued searching for the book. “Where is it? Where is it?” I kept on searching for it.

“Are you looking for this?”

I turned around to see Niandra holding the book I was looking for. “How did you know I was searching for that book? Are you spying on me?”

She laughed. “You wish? Like I don't have anything other than to watch your butt all day. You left it on the couch and I found it interesting.”

I snatched it from her. “Were you reading it? Did you find anything that could be helpful from it?” I inquired, eager to know.

“You're really nosy, you know that?”

I looked at her with a confused expression on my face. “Nosy? You're literally the one who's in my library right now.”

“I was trying to help you,” she stated.

I scoffed at her statement. “If you really want to help me, then tell me anything that could help. I have to get that spectrum otherwise I'm toast.”

“You're feisty, I like that.”

“Are you seriously saying that? We're being serious right now. I'm in a crisis right now, I have to be in a meeting and I need to pitch in something to state that I have everything under control so help me.”

I waited for her to say something but she didn't. I sighed, feeling defeated but I wasn't going to give up just yet. I was determined to pull through.

“Page sixth five,” I heard her say. I turned to look at her with a confused expression on my face. “Huh?” I asked.

“It'd help you. So stop acting like I'm a monster or something, bitch.”

I chuckled at her statement and left the library, feeling a bit grateful for her help. I opened the book, scrolling to page sixty five immediately. I found something that helped me and I knew this would also help me get somewhere in my search.

I ran outside, all the way to my car. “Let's go,” I ordered my driver. He nodded in response and started the car immediately.

I texted Maxwell immediately after that.

"We need to meet before the meeting starts. I need you to stall the meeting any way possible. Thank you.”

I hope this pulls through at least.
