Chapter 18

Laura's P.O.V

My driver drove as fast as possible, weaving through pack grounds till we got into Elder Magnus' compound. He's one of the top ranked elders, and according to my past life, very corrupt. Infact, he was the mastermind of everything. My parents really trusted him before their death.

I opened to page 65, eyes skimming through the content there, and trying to decipher how I can properly explain its help to the council of elders. I hope Maxwell would be able to hold them off. My phone pinged, halting my thoughts.

The screen brightened up, it was a text from Maxwell.

"Speak of the devil" I murmured.. "or the angel as the case may be"

His text read, "I'll try to Alpha." Then three dots appeared underneath to signify he was still typing, "Are you okay?, Are you sure you don't need help?" The second text read. I smiled without even meaning to, always the worrisome one.

I'm not oblivious to the fact that he loves me, he's been in love with me for so long. Even in my past life, he was the one who helped me, I really appreciate him especially in a world like mine where traitors are those you consider family.

The shrill ring of my phone brought me out of my thoughts, and sure, he was the one calling. "Hello? Laura, are you okay? You were not replying my texts," his deep masculine voice worriedlysounded.

"Sorry I bothered you, I was trying to find a way to fix the issue of the spectra." I replied,

He breathed a sigh of relief over the phone, one that I wouldn't have heard if I didn't have the super hearing abilities I was gifted by the moon goddess. "Alright, I'll try to stall them then." He concluded with a tone of finality.

"Okay, I'll be there soon and when I am, I'll call you so you can excuse yourself and I'll brief you on what I'm about to do." I said, I just hope this works.

He muttered an "Hmm, I'm at your service." His voice lowered at the latter part. Then the dial tone beeped signifying the end of the call.

I rested my back on the soft plush leather of the car almost drifting asleep when the voice of the driver penetrated my sleep haze. "We're here ma."

I put myself together, texting Max a short 'Here' text, while still in the car. He came out a few moments later and my driver waved him over.

He got into the car looking at me expectantly. "So what was it you left for? You said it was urgent and important. The elders are already getting antsy, i had to try all the rules in the book to hold them off and Sonia wasn't even helping matters."

"Tsk" I clicked my tongue, "let's leave the bitch aside and focus on more pressing matters. I handed the book over to him. "Open to page 65"

He skimmed through it, trying to make sense of the words written there. "It's just an address of Stone pack here, and the name Alfred" he looked confused, "How is this going to help?"

"We're going to Stone pack." I said simply.

"We're going to Stone pack?" He asked, dropping the book back in our middle.

"Yes, we're going to find that old man."

"We're going to find the old man?" He questions again,

"Yes, we're going to find the old man. If you would let me speak" I snapped,

"Why are we going to find the old man?, Who is he and how can he be of help?" He ran his hands through his hair, seeming genuinely lost.

Now I'm at the verge of pulling my hair, "I was just about to explain that if you'll let me" I hate being interrupted and it's general knowledge.

"I apologize Alpha, continue"

"Yeah, so Alfred is the oldest werewolf seer in the southern packs and he has wisdom that corroborates with his age. People - Alpha's and ordinary members alike - come from far and wide to listen to him speak and ask questions, even before he became this old. It's stated on the previous pages in that book. He has also been able to stop wars from breaking out between several packs and has made Stone pack the allies of major packs as nobody dares to cross them. He's like a national treasure of some sort." I explained, pausing to take a deep breath.

"Okay, so it's resolved then? We go there, speak to this Alfred and he tells us where the spectra is?" He asks, hope evident in his eyes,

"Well, it's not exactly like that, it is said that he doesn't give orders and solutions in a straightforward manner. He says it in parables, so it's left to the person to decode the parable rightly and understand what was said, but the answer is always within the parable." I concluded.

"So we're going there to speak to him?" He asks, now that he understands where I was going.

"Exactly. To see if he can be of help, we need all the help we can possibly get now." We were out of the car now, heading towards the main doors.

"Not to be the pessimistic one, but what if he's unable to help? You said he's the oldest and wisest, but we don't even know if he's still sane, that book looks years old, how are we sure?" He reasoned.

"Well, then I guess we'll find out when we.." I motioned to both of us "..get there."

"I'm going with you?" He asked.

"Yes, you are." I confirmed.

"Lau- Alpha, are you sure this is the last resort?" He looks unsure, I'm also not sure but I need all the help I can get, and definitely something to tell the power-hungry elders behind those doors.

"Laura is fine, and this is the only option Maxwell, no other alternatives." I nodded at the guard at the entrance of the house in acknowledgement before turning to face Max.

"Yes, you're my beta. Plus you're kinda the only one I trust right now." I smiled at him, hoping my smile conveyed an unspoken appreciation.

"Alright, point taken, Let's go in, before they plan a coup behind our backs" He says jokingly, gesturing to the large doors that held the very spacious meeting room in Elder Magnus' house that I had only been to a few times.

"Why, thank you for reminding me of my predicament Max. Like they aren't doing that already." I rolled my eyes as I spoke, trying to gather my thoughts and clear my face of any emotions as we walked down the hallway to the door.

"Max?" He questioned,

"Yes, Max. Maxwell is a mouthful, don't you think?" I smirked, watching the corner of his lips quirk in a silent laughter. Although I've always referred to him as Max in my head, it was a weird and different thing, saying it out loud.

"Indeed it is, and Max is fine, I love it." He replied, then lowly muttered "I'll answer to anything if it comes out of those lush lips" I heard, he doesn't know it, but I did hear, and my heart jumped, the last thing I needed it to do as we stepped into the conference room.
