Seraphine’s Point of View “W-what?” I asked in a breathless tone. “I think I know you,” Cassius repeated. “I think I saw you already...” “You might have mistaken her over someone else. You just met her today, or you might have caught a glimpse of her last night when we arrived,” Maximus interjected, pulling me towards him. But Cassius still hasn’t let go of my wrist. So I was stuck in an awkward position between them. “No. I’m pretty sure I didn’t notice her last night,” Cassius said, shaking his head. Well, damn. “But she really, really looked familiar. Are you sure we haven’t met?” I swallowed the lump on my throat, refraining myself from yelling: 'Yes, we met already! In fact, we’re mates and married’, but that just sounds delusional, and I don’t want that to be their impression on me. “No, we haven’t,” I firmly answered, lying through my teeth. His shoulder sag in dismay, yet the narrowing of his eyes indicated that this will not be the last time I’m hearing about th
Cassius’ Point of View I looked at the slowly increasing crowd of people nervously waiting at the Assembly Hall. My eyes wander around, looking for a certain hot-headed blonde. Much to my dismay, there’s still no sign of her. “Looking for the girl you pissed off?” “You go and piss off, Luster.” Luster barked out a laugh as he settled himself beside me. “Right, you pissed off a lot of girls on a daily basis.” “Not my fault they can’t accept a simple ‘no’,” I said, shrugging. Luster shakes his head, completely used to my attitude. “How is a ‘I have no interest in associating myself to people who just want to leech off my name and status’ a simple ‘no’?” Luster rolled her eyes. “That was a mean way of rejecting people, just so you know.” “That’s how I simply reject them, man. You would not want to hear the mean way.” He dissolved into laughter at that as he playfully shoved me. “You are such a big jerk.” “I know,” I said, sticking up my chin. “There she is,” Luster s
Seraphine’s Point of View Talking casually with young Cassius was exhilarating. Without the arrogant quips and sharp remarks, the conversation made me feel so alive. Hearing his slowly maturing voice, still tinged with a hint of childishness, coming from that arrogant looking face was something I never realised I had longed for until now. I met him when he was slowly becoming a man, but I think I rather prefer meeting this younger version of him. I would love to meet every version of my Cassius, and to love each of them as well. “Sera, your friends are waiting for you downstairs. They said you’re all walking to school together?” My mother asked from outside my room. “Yes, mom. I’m coming!” After checking one last time if I had all my necessary things in my satchel, I left my room and hurried down. I bid goodbye to my parents and then went off with Leilani and Maximus, who were glaring at each other and mouthing off words I couldn’t understand. “Are you fighting?” I aske
Seraphine’s Point of View Once we arrived at the school, Cassius and Luster offered to help us find our class. Since our registration was kind of rushed— our parents enrolled us at the last minute— we have to look at the bulletin board to find what class we belong to. “Here’s the first year’s classes,” Cassius said, pointing at the green board where papers are pinned on it. Maximus, Leilani and I started looking for our names, going for different papers to make it fast. As I know which class I belong to, I went straight for the paper where I’m sure I would see my name on it. But my eyes went wide in surprise when I did not only see my name, but also the other four I’m currently with. “Hey! We’re all in the same classes!” I exclaimed, pointing at the paper. They scrambled to look at where I pointed, and Leilani squealed in excitement as she held my arms and gently shook it. “We’re in the same class again!” “I’m in the same class as well,” Maximus glared at her, but turn
Seraphine’s Point of View I closed my eyes, then I breathed deeply. I repeated it several times and only when I deemed myself calm enough, did I open my eyes. “Are you all done arguing about the same thing?” I asked in a bored tone, successfully gaining their attention. “Or you still haven’t finalised what to do tomorrow?” A week into the class showed us that leisure time wasn’t easy to have. We still haven’t gone to the Local Emporium that Luster had told us on the first day because we spent a lot of time in the library. It was nearly sunset when we left the school, no more time to visit the Emporium. But the next day, the teachers started shoving us loads of homework. So instead of visiting the shops, we stayed over in the library to finish our homework. It worked well because the five of us stayed productive— even amidst the endless bickering between Maximus, Cassius and Leilani. Luster occasionally joined when he wanted to convey his opinion, but most of the time, I was lef
Cassius’ Point of ViewI woke up with a loud gasp, breathing heavily as I abruptly sat up on my bed.I reached for my throat with trembling hands, sighing in relief when I found no slit there. A shudder ran through me as the phantom pain of that deep cut lingered.I did not dream of the same girl I’ve been dreaming of for the past weeks, but I heard him scream my name when I fell limply on the ground. The heart-shattering scream made my heart hurt, as if I was hurting more for the girl than the slit on my throat. It was another bizarre dream I have, but one that made me shudder the most. I don’t know what to make of it, because I believe it’s not just a simple dream anymore. Is it some sort of prophetic dream? Does it show what will happen to my future? As far as I remember, I was taller and more muscular. I could practically feel my own strength. My voice was deep and silky—different from how it is now.Shaking my head as I knew it would be impossible to fall asleep once again, I sto
Seraphine’s Point of ViewI let my hands trail across the stack of books piled neatly on the shelves. I briefly read out the titles, unsure which one to take. It was a heavenly feeling, returning to my younger self and experiencing this kind of happiness. Such an innocent struggle, to be troubled of which book should I first check out. If only all our problems are this shallow...“You know you can check out three books, right?”I felt my blood run cold when I heard Cassius speak behind me. My heart is pounding so loudly against my chest, and my mind spiraled out of control.I felt relieved when Maximus pulled me away from him, allowing me to finally breathe properly. The guilt and harrowing pain that struck me upon hearing his latest dream had shattered my composure—I almost broke down right there. Fortunately, Cassius interpreted it differently. But I can’t believe he dreamt of his brawl with Maximus! He dreamt of his brutal death... I had no idea why he was having dreams of his fi
Seraphine’s Point of ViewThe boys charged forward, the splintered wood raised high in the air. Just as Cassius was about to swing it at the bloody hands, someone yelled in a panicked voice.“Wait! I am General Arthur! Do not hit my hand, children!”Almost immediately, Cassius and Luster lowered their hands and took a step back, as if they recognized the voice. But Maximus still seemed sceptical, gripping the wood tightly without swinging it at the General.Once the man climbed up the house, he dusted off his hands and turned to look at us with those dark eyes. He was carefully examining each of us, and once he deemed we were alright, he nodded his head.“Did you see anyone creeping around in this area?” He asked. When I noticed that none of my companions were willing to answer, I stepped forward to speak. “No, sir. As soon as we arrived, we were too occupied overlooking the town. And when the announcement was made, we huddled in the corner.”General Arthur arched an eyebrow, his eyes
