ISABELLE’S POV
As I climbed onto the grand palace steps, a surge of warmth spread through me, even in the chilling cold.
My gaze stayed fixed on the figure kneeling in the snow. I cast a glance at the guards standing stiffly at attention by the double doors.
“Who is that man kneeling in the snow?” I asked, brimming with curiosity.
The guards stiffened, and one answered, “That's the pack Zeta, General Kael. He was originally stationed at the border to defend the pack, but he recently returned.”
My wolf’s voice echoed in my mind as she pranced around. “This is your chance. Go and introduce yourself.”
I considered her suggestion, my gaze flickering back to the figure but I had other priorities right now.
One thing first, I thought, pushing down the strange warmth in my chest as I walked into the palace beside Rowan.
The huge doors closed with a loud thud behind us and we approached the throne room silently.
My brother's face lit up as he saw me, his usually stoic expression breaking into one of pure relief.
“Sister, you’re all right!” he exclaimed, stepping down from his throne, crossing the room in a few strides and wrapping me in a tight embrace.
I let out a little giggle, sinking into his warmth and familiar scent. “I’m fine, Tristan. It takes more than a bit of cold water to take me out.” I joked.
His grip loosened, but his hand remained around me as he took a step back and turned a suspicious gaze toward Rowan.
“I’m a little surprised to see you here with the princess, Beta,” he said, a slight edge in his voice.
“It’s a great honour to have the princess of the pack interested in you. As Beta, you shouldn’t hesitate.”
Rowan shifted in his feet and opened his mouth to respond, but he stopped himself.
Tristan's hands dropped off me as he slowly stalked towards Rowan, his expression darkening.
“After this near-drowning incident, you should be planning to get married to my sister,” Tristan growled, his voice echoing with a commanding tone.
Before it could escalate further, I quickly stepped in. “Brother, I think you’re misunderstanding. That's not what I'm here for.” I said, my voice firm. “I came to clarify things.”
Tristan’s brow furrowed, his head whipping towards me. “What do you mean?”
“I came to tell you that what happened at the lake was my own mistake. And Matilda shouldn't get punished for it. You have to release her, Tristan.”
He blinked, clearly taken aback. “Are you sure about this, Isabelle? You have been interested in Rowan for so long.”
“Not anymore,” I replied, looking straight at him.
“Are you…certain?” He asked again.
I nodded, my gaze flickering over to Rowan watching silently.
My heart tugged, but I turned back to Tristan, with a curt smile. “Yes I am.” I whispered with certainty.
After a few seconds of stunned silence, Tristan finally nodded, though his expression was still clouded in disbelief. “Very well, sister. I’ll order her release.”
I knew he didn't fully believe me, in his eyes, I had been pursuing Rowan for months, never leaving his side, and now I claimed I wasn't interested in him anymore.
“Thank you, Brother,” I said, giving him a slight bow and flashing him a warm comforting smile so he wouldn't stay worried about me.
I turned to leave, but I stopped midway and turned to Rowan.
“Rowan, go to the prison and get Matilda out yourself.”
He nodded, bowing to Tristan and casting a grateful glance at me. “Thank you, princess.”
With my task finally complete, I left the palace. Yet as I stepped back outside into the cold, my eyes were immediately drawn back to General Kael.
Snow had continued to fall on his kneeling figure, piling over his broad shoulders and covering his dark hair, but he hadn’t moved a muscle.
My wolf stirred within me, urging me towards him. ‘Go on,’ she whispered. ‘This is your opportunity.’
The pull was undeniable, and before I knew it, my feet were taking me toward him.
Standing so close, my eyes fell to his striking features—intense, with sharp eyebrows and eyes that seemed to glint like stars against the pale backdrop of snow.
My heart raced as I stared at him, and for a moment, the countdown faded in my mind, leaving a strange energy coursing through my veins.
‘He is just too handsome.’ I thought, and standing here, there was something about him that kept drawing me in.
“General Kael,” I called out softly, “why are you kneeling here, in the snow?”
He didn’t respond, his expression remaining cold and emotionless, gaze fixed straight ahead.
I bit my bottom lip, undeterred. Without thinking I slipped off my fur coat, draping it over his shoulders, and placed my hand warmer into his hands. “Don’t freeze to death.” I whispered.
Still, he didn’t reply, and a sliver of doubt crept into my mind.
‘Was he not interested in me?’ I wondered, my courage melting. But my wolf prodded me on.
‘Be confident, Isabelle. You’re a princess—your beauty and kindness can make any man line up for you.’
I straightened, my resolve hardening. Just as I was about to speak to him again, Rowan appeared beside me, his expression tight with concern. “You shouldn’t have given him your coat, Isabelle,” he murmured. “You’ll catch a chill.”
Ignoring Rowan, I glance back at Kael, waiting for him to say something or even a flicker in his expression. But he remained as still as stone.
Rowan gently guided me back toward the waiting car. As I settled into the warm leather, my eyes fell back on Kael through the window.
To my shock, he had already tossed my coat aside, letting it fall into the snow.
A wave of irritation rushed through me, as I stared at my coat and hand warmers sitting in the snow.
I snapped my gaze away from him, looking straight ahead.
“Why is he kneeling there in the first place?” I asked Rowan.
Rowan glanced out the window at Kael, with a slight frown. “His younger brother has been arrested for assault. Kael is likely here to plead his case.”
“Well, he is just wasting his time if the accusations are true about his brother. Kneeling here can't save him.” I remarked.
“General Kael must have been the reckless driver who’d nearly crashed into us earlier.“ I thought out loud.
Rowan mulled the thought for a moment before he nodded in agreement.
“Do you think his brother is the type to do something like that?” I asked. “Do you think he committed the crimes he's accused of?”
Rowan hesitated. “Honestly, it doesn’t seem like something he would do.”
I turned back to the road before us, and my wolf’s voice was back. ‘This is it.’ She whispered.
‘This is your chance to get closer to Kael. He needs help to get his brother out, and you can offer it.’
I pondered her advice the whole drive back to the villa. Once inside, I felt restless, my wolf’s words kept echoing in my mind, the idea taking root.
Finally, I called for the driver again, and without thinking it through, I was on my way back to the palace.
The snow had thickened, and the sky casting a dim glow over the grounds as the car stopped at the entrance.
I approached Kael slowly, his shoulders now coated in a new layer of snow, but still, he knelt, not moving an inch. I drew closer, my boots crunching over the frozen ground, and stopped right in front of him.
“Why wouldn't you accept the coat I gave you?” I asked, my voice clear and sharp.
ISABELLE’S POVThe air bristled with tension as I stared at Kael, he stayed kneeling in the thick snow, his expression cold and hardened. His silence stirred something of a mix of frustration and fascination within me.I let out a deep sigh of disappointment. "You’re breaking my heart with your cold demeanour, you know." But still, Kael remained silent, not even a flicker of emotion breaking through his cool mask. So, he’s a tough nut to crack, I mused, feeling a thrill run through me at the challenge. I let go and tossed my cloak and hand warmer at him. “Kneeling here to plead for your brother is pointless. You won't get what you want from the Emperor like this.”Finally, he stirred him, his expression faltering for a second. Kael looked up, and his eyes met mine, momentarily softening as he took in my features. My wolf sensed a faint glint of admiration in his gaze before his face hardened, returning to his icy expression.“What do you mean?” he growled, his tone clipped and sharp
ISABELLE'S POV“But there is something you must know,” Tristan said just as I turned to leave the throne room. “Kael’s brother was not only accused of assault, but he also publicly declared his intent to overthrow my rule.” He continued, his tone steady. My brows shot up as I heard the news, my heart skipping a beat. Rebellion was the highest form of treason in the Night fall pack and was also punishable by death. My wolf bristled, sensing how serious the situation just became. I let out a deep breath, quickly composing myself. “If this news is true,” I said firmly, “I wouldn’t hesitate to carry out the punishment for such a crime myself. No one has the right to challenge our family’s rule and go unpunished.”Tristan’s eyes softened at my words. “We don’t have conclusive proof yet, and there are so many holes in the case that don’t sit right with me.”My interest was instantly piqued and I took a step towards the throne. “Then let me go along with my investigation. I’ll find out t
ISABELLE'S POVAs we rode through the streets, the low hum of the engine, the only sound in the car.I glanced at Kael, it was obvious he was still tense, staring out the window with a furrowed brow as if lost in thought. My wolf whispered pranced, nudging me to break through his stoic prickly exterior.“What did you mean back there?” He asked, his voice filled with curiosity. I leaned slightly towards his warmth, my eyes glinting with mischief. ‘You need to play hard to keep his attention solely on you.’ She suggested.I agreed, a little mystery would keep him on his toes. “Am I beautiful?” I murmured, tilting my head and brushing my hair out of my face with a coy smile.Kael’s face flushed a deep crimson, his body stiffening. “I… yes,” he admitted, in a mere whisper. “Yes, Princess… you are beautiful.” Warmth bloomed inside me, my heart racing at his response. It was all meant to just be a game, or so I thought, yet his words pulled at something deep in me. My wolf hummed with a
ISABELLE'S POVMy eyes narrowed as I watched him lower his head as he admitted, “I did go to the club.”“And did you go alone?” I asked, my tone sharp and firm.He stammered, his face growing pale. My wolf stirred, urging me to press him further for answers. I could sense there was more to what happened that he wasn’t saying. I just needed to scare the truth out of him.“Levi,” I called out, my tone turned icy. “This is your very last chance. Your brother went through so much just to get here and see you, and we both know this prison is crawling with rats and cockroaches. If you don’t want to live like this and then be executed, you’d better be honest with us right now.”His grip on the bars trembled, his lips quivering as he finally broke down. “It wasn’t my idea. A friend… he told me it was a fun place, and I thought we were just going to hang out. I didn’t know it was a club until we got there. When I went in, I… I saw…” He swallowed hard, his face flushing red with embarrassment.
ISABELLE’S POVWhen we arrived at Rowan's house his guards gave me a curious look as I stepped out of the car.My presence here was already a familiar sight to them from the days I used to wait around, eager to see Rowan. They bowed with respect and turned prepared to notify Rowan of my arrival immediately. But there was a spark in my eyes as I announced, “I’m not here for Rowan. I came here to see Thane. Take me to him—now.”The guards froze, murmurs echoing through them at the sudden change. Just then, the door opened, and Rowan himself stepped out, a surprised look on his face that he hid it with a polite smile. But before he could approach us or say a word, I moved to Kael’s side, linking my arm through his. Rowan's eyes flickered with surprise, his gaze fixed on the link between Karl's and my arm.I pulled him closer, raising my voice cheerfully. “I’m so exhausted from the day’s events and would love a nice warm meal. Rowan, be a good host and prepare some food. Thane and his s
ISABELLE’S POVI was satisfied as Kael and I stepped out through the doors of Rowan's house. We have gotten the confirmation we needed: Kael’s brother was innocent of the rape and assault charge, even though the accusation of treason still loomed over him. My wolf nudged me with a sly suggestion, ‘You need to use this opportunity to extract more from Kael. After all, you had already solved half his problem.’ I smirked coyly, feeling a surge of confidence at the chance to take control.Whirling around to face Kael, I let out a casual sigh. “Well, I guess I have fulfilled my promise to prove your brother’s innocence—at least for the assault accusation,” I said, keeping my tone light but watching for his reaction.Kael's head snapped towards me, his eyes meeting mine filled with confusion. “What do you mean Isabelle?” He growled.“I mean, I'm done here. You now have evidence proving your brother is innocent of the assault charges.”“Wait, but we agreed to honour our deal once my brothe
KAEL’S POVThere was absolutely nothing I could do to shake the flustered feeling from Isabelle’s boldness. Her brash demands to have me in her bed were outrageous but she whispered them like it was absolutely normal.I felt trapped, not by her words, but by the intensity of her gaze as she stared at me waiting for a response. My ears flushed crimson, and an intense heat spread through my body, but I quickly quelled the fire, my jaw clenched in frustration. My instinct was to shut her down and end all of this. But I couldn't think of hesitating to deny her, not now that we were finally making some progress on the case.If Isabelle abandoned the investigation now, my brother’s life would be ruined, and I just couldn’t allow that to happen. For Levi's sake, I had reluctantly agreed to her terms, even though I was still reeling from the implications of her words. When Rowan offered to also help solve the case, I could see the reluctance in Isabelle's eyes that she was going to reject h
ISABELLE’S POVI frowned, turning to Kael, and asking, “What stories are they talking about?”Kael's expression darkened immediately, his jaw clenched as he muttered, “Just some fanciful tales.”The sudden harshness in his voice startled me for a moment. I still desperately wanted to press him further but decided against it, I could sense he didn't want to talk about the hidden stories.Since Kael was so hesitant to share the story for some reason, I guess I had to get it some other way. I was already intrigued and I had to know more about what the people were murmuring about.I turned around glancing at Rowan's stiff figure, my gaze flickering to the matrons still talking in hushed tones. “ Beta Rowan, what stories are they talking about?” I asked, my curiosity evident in my impatient tone.He raised his brows at me and I kept my expression stoic, our gaze clashed for a moment before he realised I was dead serious, he shifted uncomfortably on his feet, arms crossed across his chest a
ISABELLE’S POVThe morning light streamed through the tall windows of my chambers, as I stirred in the silk sheets. The heat from last night still lingered in the air. I turned with exhaustion, my movement sending tiny shocks through her muscles and my mind playing a reminder of Kael’s hands on my body, his lips tracing wet kisses along my skin.A gentle knock on the door pulled me away from the memories as I quickly sat up, pulling the sheets closer to my body.“My Lady,” my maid's soft voice called through the door. One of my maids stepped inside, a basin of warm water in her hands. Her cheeks flushed red with heat as her gaze landed on the scattered bed and my naked body was barely covered by the sheets.“What do you want?” I murmured, stretching my hands over my head lazily. She quickly averted her gaze, setting the basin down on a nearby table. “General Kael tended to you this morning,” she said. “He cleaned your wounds and ensured you were comfortable before leaving.”My lips
KAEL’S POVI could feel the light of dawn seeping through the curtains, casting a golden glow across the princess's chambers. I stirred awake, my body still warm from the lingering heat of the Isabelle sprawled beside me.I looked down at Isabelle, lying asleep against me, her dark lashes resting against her cheeks, and her breathing slow and even. Something tightened in my chest from the sight of her, so calm and vulnerable in her sleep. For a moment, I just watched her, memorizing every detail and feature of her face. The way her lips were slightly parted, the gentle rise and fall of her chest, the faint bruises along her collarbone. I reached out without thinking, my fingers trailing over her skin, before pulling back. I carefully pulled the blanket up, making sure she was well covered.I wanted to stay. But I couldn't.I quietly slipped out of bed, slowly shrugged my clothes back on and cast one last glance at Isabelle before I left.Once I was fully dressed, I slipped through th
ISABELLE’S POVThe warm steam hung in the air, wrapping me in heat as I leaned against the edge of the bath. Kael stood across from me, his body stiff and his shoulders tense as if he wanted to run away at any moment. I smirked at his obvious discomfort, finding his hesitation cute."You look like you're preparing for battle, General." I teased, lazily running my fingers across the water.Kael let out a sharp breath. "I don't think we should be doing this, princess." He whispered I raised an eyebrow, my eyes shining with amusement. "And yet, here you are."He hesitated for a moment then he shook his head with a defeated chuckle. "You’re relentless.""I would prefer you use the term determined."He laughed his chest rumbling with the low sound and I used the moment to move closer to him, As I closed the distance between us, Kael tensed slightly but still, he didn't pull away. I suddenly turned around, slowly prying the straps of my dress over my shoulder. He let out a gasp, but coul
ISABELLE’S POVThe air between us was heavy with tension as I stood over Axel with a sly smile. “You need to start talking right now,” I muttered. He looked up at me, his body shaking with rage. I could see he desperately wanted to hurt me, raising his hands towards me with force but the chains held him back. His face was pale from blood loss, but his eyes were locked on mine, flashing with warning and danger.“You think you can endure this, don’t you?” I murmured, “you really think I would let you die so easily and escape your punishment for your crimes?”“There's nothing you can do to make you tell you anything.” He snarled.I chuckled, a low sound that echoed through the room. “You are telling me everything you know.” I was warned. He smirked, but I could see his eyes falter when I pulled out the same poisoned arrow he fired and tried to use to assassinate me.The tip was still stained with Rowan's blood and I didn't bother to clean it. I want him to suffer his same crimes.I trail
ISABELLE'S POV I leaned in, as I heard Rowan’s weak voice calling my name, my brow furrowed, not sure if I had heard him. His mouth moved again, forming my name faintly on his lips, and for a moment, my heart fluttered in my chest.I stared at him, his dark hair falling over his face and his eyes still shut tight. And for a second, I let my heart wander, my heart fluttering. But I couldn’t let my mind go far, so I quickly pushed the thought aside. ‘Don’t be ridiculous, Isabelle. He’s delirious from the fever.’ My wolf murmured.Rowan’s breathing became steady as he slipped back into unconsciousness, but I remained at his bedside for a moment longer, my expression calm. I let out a deep breath, brushing off the strange emotions stirring inside my chest. The sound of footsteps broke the silence in the room. I turned around to see Kael entering the room, his eyes looked tired but he walked in with his usual confidence.“You’ve been by his bedside the whole time,” Kael teased, his lip
MARCELLO’S POVI stayed hidden in the shadows, my eyes sharp as I watched the chaos near the city gate. The guards all stood around the princess, their weapons drawn and ready to attack. From this distance, I couldn't hear what they were saying but it was obvious what was happening. Axel’s desperate suicide attempt had been stopped, his dagger pushed out of his hands by General Kael. The guards moved swiftly, holding Axel to the ground, and the sound of his bones breaking under their force made me in pain.I watched Axel writhe in pain, his body lying lifeless on the ground. For a moment, I pushed forward to save Axel and get him out of this mess. Even though I didn't agree with his plan to kill the princess, he was still a valuable ally in our mission in the Knightfall pack. But I paused in my steps, I knew it would be almost impossible to get him out. Kael and their soldiers surrounded Axel, leaving no room for escape. To act now would be very foolish, and I wasn't ready to throw
AXEL’S POVThe tension in my chest tightened as I crouched watching over the city gate. I narrowed my eyes as I watched General Kael as he approached the princess’s carriage. Even from this distance, I could see the way Kael’s shoulders relaxed in the princess's presence. My face settled into a deep scowl as the general that conquered the Shallow Land pack army shuddered as the princess took his hand. From the angle, I could see his expression melt when she took a step closer. The fearless warrior who had led NightFall forces to crush mine, wrapped around her finger. How could a man who was so strong and decisive bow so easily to the spoilt and proud princess? My gaze darkened as I returned my focus to the princess. She held Kael's hands to her lips and kissed them.My breath hitched as she pulled her hair away from her face and I could finally see her side profile. I didn't notice it at first, but now I am certain. Her straight posture, the way she carried herself— she acted just li
AXEL'S POVI crouched low on the rooftop, the cold stone pressing painfully against my knees. The cool morning wind bit into my skin, but I stayed frozen in position.Chills crawled into my skin but I shook my head. I can't leave this position after I have been waiting for her for so long. From this distance, I could see the city gate and the road leading out of the pack's borders. I adjusted my position, making sure my bow and poisoned arrow were steady.Through one eye, I spotted the princess's carriage, the woman I spent days tracking finally in front of me. She slowly stepped out, and stood near her car, speaking to a man. Even though I couldn't see her face from this angle, it was obvious who she was from the extravagant dress and the maids standing all around her.Her golden hair flowed down her back, covering the side of her face. I adjusted again till the tip of my arrow was aligned perfectly with her form.“This is it,” I muttered under my breath, my heart racing as I shook
AXEL'S POVI rushed through the club still pulsing with anger. Marcello was on my heels following me around.“Axel, you need to drop your plan for revenge, you can't kill the princess.” He ordered.I clenched my jaw, facing away from him. “Okay!” I spat out. I could see him falter at my admittance, narrowing his eyes. “I just need to get my bow and arrow.” I continued. He watched as I took the weapon and left the room. The cold night air bit at my face as I burst out of the club's back door. The princess was not going to get away with this so easily, no matter what Marcello said I was going ahead with my plan.I stood concealed among the trees near the princess's villa. I adjusted the hood of my cloak, settling down and adjusting my weapon.Marcello’s refusal to kill the princess only made me more angry, but I wasn’t one to give up easily. I didn't need any help, I can do this all by my side.My hand tightened around the quiver slung over my back, my mind was entirely focused on my mi
