KAEL’S POV
There was absolutely nothing I could do to shake the flustered feeling from Isabelle’s boldness.
Her brash demands to have me in her bed were outrageous but she whispered them like it was absolutely normal.
I felt trapped, not by her words, but by the intensity of her gaze as she stared at me waiting for a response.
My ears flushed crimson, and an intense heat spread through my body, but I quickly quelled the fire, my jaw clenched in frustration.
My instinct was to shut her down and end all of this. But I couldn't think of hesitating to deny her, not now that we were finally making some progress on the case.
If Isabelle abandoned the investigation now, my brother’s life would be ruined, and I just couldn’t allow that to happen.
For Levi's sake, I had reluctantly agreed to her terms, even though I was still reeling from the implications of her words.
When Rowan offered to also help solve the case, I could see the reluctance in Isabelle's eyes that she was going to reject him.
I couldn't let that happen, I knew if Rowan worked with us the truth would be uncovered faster and my brother would be out of that hellhole.
But as I stepped in to accept his help, Isabelle's eyes flashed with annoyance, her expression suddenly turning sour.
I tried to ignore her sudden reaction but I couldn't help the questions rising in my mind.
Was she still concerned about Rowan? Was that why she always tried to avoid him?
I gritted my teeth in frustration, I hated the uncertainty I felt about her especially when her sudden change of attitude left me so unsure.
The next morning, I woke up at the crack of dawn dressed meticulously in my formal uniform, complete with my sword strapped to my side.
I didn’t know why I was putting in so much effort and felt the need to present myself so formally—it wasn’t as though I needed to impress her.
And yet, when I found myself waiting in the grand hall of the princess’s villa, I couldn't help but glance at my reflection on the polished marble floors, adjusting my lapels.
I waited in the halls of the villa for two long hours before Isabelle finally descended the staircase, her casual grace commanding my full attention.
I raised my gaze towards the stairs and my breath hitched briefly, my heart skipping a beat at the sight of her—she was radiant, her face simply perfection.
I caught myself immediately, averting my eyes from her. I avoided her gaze as she approached, her steps echoing on the marble tiles.
Anxiety clawed at my sides when she stood right in front of me, the sun shining around her like a halo.
I sputtered for words and then to hide my nervousness, I commented on her sleeping in till noon.
She merely flicked a strand of her hair away from her face, teasing me about having many girlfriends. My immediate instinct was to deny, though her question still lingered in my mind.
Does she really think I was that kind of man?
ISABELLE’S POV
I bit back a smile, secretly amused by Kael’s reaction to my teasing.
The way his eyes widened slightly, with the faint blush creeping across his cheeks, it was almost endearing.
There was something about his quiet, stoic demeanor that intrigued me. He was strong and disciplined, but also pure and innocent underneath his hard exterior.
Still, I quickly brushed my thoughts aside as my wolf growled softly in my mind, urging me to regain focus.
This wasn't the time to get distracted or lose focus. We still needed to solve this case before Kael’s brother was executed.
In the car, I was surprised as Kael held out a baseball cap and a mask.
I turned to him with raised brows.”What are you doing?” I asked with a squint.
“You should wear these,” he responded coolly, his tone gentle but firm. “We don't need to go in there and draw attention to ourselves.”
I hesitated, arching an eyebrow to him but after a second I complied, pulling the cap over my head and wrapping my hair into a low bun and slipping on the mask.
I gave him a subtle glance, finding his concern amusing but oddly touching.
The café was bustling with activity as we walked in. The bell dinged loudly to announce our arrival.
Shelves filled with rows of books lined the walls, and small groups of people were scattered throughout the room, sipping coffee, reading, or working on laptops.
And in a large corner, a group of artists sat sketching and painting on large canvases.
Kael leaned in, whispering. “The café is hosting an art competition sponsored by the royal family. The winners would go on to become court painters.”
“Court painters?” I echoed, intrigued.
“It’s a rare honour,” He continued. “For the artists, regardless of their background, it’s a ticket to fame and fortune.” He explained.
My eyes flickered to the artists, my gaze lingering on the vibrant colours of their works and the pure concentration on their faces.
The atmosphere was a little strained, and as we walked up the stairs to a quieter section of the café, I sighted Rowan's figure leaning against the railing and watching the crowd.
I approached him without hesitation, he looked up as we got closer, greeting with a slight bow.
“When did you arrive?” I asked, replying with a curt nod.
He straightened from the railing, adjusting his collar. “Just got here.” He replied casually.
As Kael and Rowan exchanged greetings I caught snippets of gossip from some of the patrons below.
“Did you see the woman who just came upstairs?” someone whispered. “She’s beautiful—even as she hid her features with the cap and mask.”
“With her grace and the knight by her side,” another voice chipped in, “she must be someone important—maybe rich or noble.”
Another voice muttered with growing excitement, “If we gain her favour, our lives could change forever. Just like the stories.”
My eyes snapped towards them, my brows furrowing in confusion”
What were they talking about?
ISABELLE’S POVI frowned, turning to Kael, and asking, “What stories are they talking about?”Kael's expression darkened immediately, his jaw clenched as he muttered, “Just some fanciful tales.”The sudden harshness in his voice startled me for a moment. I still desperately wanted to press him further but decided against it, I could sense he didn't want to talk about the hidden stories.Since Kael was so hesitant to share the story for some reason, I guess I had to get it some other way. I was already intrigued and I had to know more about what the people were murmuring about.I turned around glancing at Rowan's stiff figure, my gaze flickering to the matrons still talking in hushed tones. “ Beta Rowan, what stories are they talking about?” I asked, my curiosity evident in my impatient tone.He raised his brows at me and I kept my expression stoic, our gaze clashed for a moment before he realised I was dead serious, he shifted uncomfortably on his feet, arms crossed across his chest a
ISABELLE’S POV Something about his presence stirred me. My wolf already intrigued. He looked like he'd been plucked right out of a painting, his features refined and simply perfection.“Are you alright?” I asked, my voice calm even as my heart skipped a beat.My body flushed with the same sensation I felt when I first laid eyes on Kael, a natural physical attraction I couldn't deny.Alan straightened, his pride untouched despite the humiliation. “Thank you, Miss. I’m fine.” He replied smoothly, with a graceful bow.I narrowed my eyes at the wealthy man, who seemed to take pleasure in tormenting him. Hiding a secret smirk, as I decided to put on a whole performance. With theatrical flair, I suddenly collapsed to the ground with a loud thud, gasping for air and clutching my chest like I was going to faint.l cried out, my voice trembling with false distress "The owner’s cruel words have caused my heart to falter,"The crowd gasped in shock as they watched me. Alan rushed over to help
ALAN’S POVThe bell of the cafe jingled as I stepped outside right after the strange woman. The cold wind hit me hard as I walked through the door, a stark constant from the casual warmth of the cafe.I straightened my back, still reeling from the confrontation inside. I followed her, her quick footsteps echoing on the sidewalk until she stopped at a quiet corner of the street, and whipped around to face me. I was a little taken aback just like before by her beauty, her clear blue eyes and plump lips. I stared at her, still very surprised that such a distinguished-looking young lady would go so far as to stand up for a homeless beggar that she hadn't met before. Her expression was calm and filled with determination as she held out the pouch of money Cain gave her towards me.“What–?” I questioned, narrowing my eyes at the brown leather pouch, swelling with coins.“Take it,” she said firmly.I shook my head, taking a step back away from her. “No, I certainly do not want charity,” I mu
ISABELLE’S POVI leaned back on the car, my eyes flickered the cafe's building, I turned to Kael and Rowan, “This café doesn't seem as simple now.” I muttered. “ There’s a very high chance it’s somehow tied to Pack officials. We’ll meet again tonight to investigate further at the clubhouse. I need to rest now.”With that I slammed the car door, settling into the comfort of the leather seats. “To the villa.” I ordered the driver. As the car's engine roared to life and we pulled out of the cafe's parking lot, I took a deep breath, shutting my eyes. I had survived too many close calls today and now I was finally safe. I could relax, and ease up my shoulders. I needed to take a deep long rest, I can't neglect myself, not after I barely escaped alive, now it was time to treat myself better.‘And the men? Kael, Rowan... Alan?’ My wolf asked.“I’m not worried about anything, in fact I had too many in my mind,” I replied with a smirk.‘To become memorable and linger in a man's thoughts, you
ISABELLE’S POVI pushed past them and lounged on the plush sofa, observing the awkward tension radiating from Rowan and Kael as they stared at me.They both stood still, on their guard, they looked unsure of what to do in a club. I gestured for them to sit down, patting the cushions on my sides with a sly smile.“Both of you need to relax and let go,” I teased. “You’re making it very obvious to everyone watching, you’ve never been to this sort of place.”They hesitated for a second, their eyes flickering over me with wariness before they crossed the distance and settled at my sides.Their warmth engulfed me, my body on high alert from their closeness, their distinct scents mixing in the air.Rowan sat stiffly, his expression slowly easing into something almost playful yet his eyes remained sharp and calculated. “Darling, it seems you’re quite at home here.” For a split second, the sudden pet name caught me off guard, and I faltered, my eyes snapping towards him.He looked a bit more
ISABELLE’S POVThe night air was brushed cooly against my skin and face as Rowan, Kael and I burst through the doors of the club. We stood outside the dimly lit club, after barely escaping the subtle traps Lyra spun inside for us.There was something about her that threw me off, the small change in her expression when I mentioned Casper. It was the tiniest movement and if I wasn't watching her closely I would have missed it.But I pushed that thought aside for now, as I turned around to face the two men, my eyes narrowing.“What,” I began, crossing my arms over my chest with a stern glare, my expression hardening, “was the meaning of what happened back there?” I questioned, tilting my head with raised brows. They both sputtered, their brows raised at me. They exchanged a glance filled with confusion before Rowan spoke up.“What do you mean, Isab–” Rowan started but I cut him off.“You know exactly what I'm talking about.” I growled. “I'm talking about the whole drama back there and
ISABELLE’S POVMy eyes were wide as I studied Alan's lean figure, I couldn't help but notice just how he had changed since our first encounter. His once-worn appearance and tattered clothes have been replaced with a clean suit jacket, his hair clean shaven. He flashed his teeth at me, his usual confidence radiating off him.I glanced back at the breathtaking painting and then to the whole of his stall. “So,” I asked, gesturing at the paintings, “how did you end up here in this stall, selling art?”He flashed me another warm smile, his gruff voice steady. “Well, thanks to your help the last time we met. And with the money, I managed to rent this stall. It’s still small and humble, but it allows me to make a living doing something I love.”My wolf stirred with approval and self satisfaction. ‘I knew there was something I saw in him, he's not someone easily defeated or knocked down.’ She mused.I nodded slightly as I picked up the vibrant landscape painting I had been admiring, the st
ISABELLE’S POVI tilted my head, trying to hide my amusement, as Kael's face flushed crimson. “Why are you so concerned about me? Don’t tell me you’ve grown attached.” I asked.Kael straightened, his voice stiff and formal. “I’m just worried about your safety, Princess. If anything dangerous were to happen to you, I know my entire family would bear the consequences.”The corner of my mouth twitched with annoyance, the smile dropping from my face. This was always all about duty, nothing more. “You’re such a stubborn fool,” I snapped back, spinning on my heel and walking back to the car, my chest heaving with anger.Kael scrambled after me, his footsteps heavy on the concrete sidewalk as he trailed me back to the car, slipping into the passenger seat with guilt clouding his features. “I'm sorry if I annoyed you, Princess, I apologise for my manners.” He said in a hushed whisper. But I wasn’t going to let him off so easily. I turned to face him, my eyes narrowed into slits “You’re not j
ISABELLE’S POVMy breath caught in my throat, but I quickly masked my reaction. “I am doing nothing of the sort, Rowan. I’m simply acting with what I see and observe. Perhaps you should do the same.”His eyes darkened, and his expression tightened. “Do you actually believe that I have any intentions towards her?” He growled, his frustration evident in his clenched jaw.Swallowing my unease for his closeness, I squared my shoulders. “Yes, Rowan. I do. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’d like some time alone without you following me around.”My heart was pounding from the tension between us, heavy and charged, but I refused to look down and walk away. His words hung in the air, heavy and dark. I stared at him, my mind racing. Why had he been waiting for me? What did he mean by what he was saying?Gathering my composure, my gaze flickered over him cautiously, “Tell me exactly why you were waiting for me?”His piercing gaze met mine and he stepped even closer, till there was only a single inch
ISABELLE’S POVI arched my eyebrows, tilting my head towards her. “And what is this matter that must be addressed?” I asked incredulously.I could see the envy shining in Tania's eyes and the clear irritation under her skin as she looked at Lila. She was going to find a way to bring her down at any cost, even if it meant lying. Her dark gaze shifted to Lila, her eyes narrowing with clear disdain. “This girl owes me something—an item that rightfully belongs to me. The necklace around her neck.”The room fell silent as all eyes turned to Tania with full attention. My expression hardened, and my wolf growled softly in my mind. ‘This girl’s arrogance knows no bounds.’ She snapped.I took a deep breath to remain calm, and then I cocked my head and asked, “And how does the necklace Lila is wearing suddenly belong to you, Lady Tania?”Tania straightened, clearly thrilled her plan to humiliate Lila seemed to be working. “Her necklace is a delicate piece, silver with a sapphire pendant. Lila
ISABELLE’S POV The intensity of his sharp look sent a chill down my spine, but I refused to let it show one bit. Instead, I cocked my head at him, arching my eyebrow and maintaining my composure. My wolf didn't stay quiet. ‘Told you meddling in his affairs wouldn’t end well. He seems furious. Are you satisfied now?’ she growled with disapproval.‘He’ll get over it,’ I shot back inwardly, not backing down for a second.Tristan stepped forward, his eyes darting between us, he could already sense the rising tension in the room and let out a light chuckle to diffuse it. “Then let’s forget about it,” he said, dismissing my proposition with a wave of his hand. The crowd began murmuring once again, their tones shifting.“It seems the princess has truly moved on from the Beta,” someone remarked.“Yes, she wouldn’t have proposed it otherwise,” another agreed.Once Matilda stepped away, the crowd eased up and dispersed. Rowan shot me one last look before he also turned around and walked away
ISABELLE’S POVThe murmurs instantly ceased, and a line cleared amongst the crowd as they quickly stepped aside for me to walk past all bowing in unison. I walked in with a tiara that accentuated my royal bearing, but as I stepped inside, I could feel Rowan's presence right behind me.I quickened my pace, to put some distance between us, but I could still feel him trailing close behind me, his presence frustratingly too close.I threw a sharp glance over my shoulder, my voice low but firm. “Why must you follow me everywhere?”Rowan smirked, unfazed by my question or my demeanor. “It would be improper for me to distance myself from the princess, don’t you think?”My wolf snickered, clearly irritated by his cockiness.I quickened my pace, determined to shake off the rumours that my entrance with Rowan would soon spark. I could feel the eyes of the crowd boring through us, I knew they would soon start gossiping about us being back together.I needed to escape him so I quickly strode tow
ISABELLE’S POV“You think you belong here?” one of the women at the head of the circle sneered. “With such an ugly dress? Did you sew it yourself?”The circle erupted in laughter. “Honestly, the audacity of some ugly paupers to show up to the palace New Year banquet in nothing but rags.”My blood boiled as I watched the scene unfold. My attention remained fixed on the group gathered near the bushes. At their centre stood a tall slender woman, with dark luscious hair, her voice sharp as she mocked a plainly dressed girl clutching a necklace.“You dare bring this cheap trinket to a royal ball?” she sneered, yanking the necklace from her hands. The girl in the middle held her head up high despite the humiliation and mocking. “That necklace was my mother’s. Please return it,” she asked calmly, although her voice was shaking with emotions. The bully's lips curled into a cruel smile as she held the necklace up with one finger. “Why would I return this trash to you?” She mocked.“Please, d..
ISABELLE’S POVAlan looked away, his voice barely audible. “You are clearly of noble descent. And I'm just a struggling painter trying to make ends meet. We are from very different worlds.”For a moment, I stared at him and didn’t know what to say. Hearing such words from Alan touched me more than I expected.“You’re wrong,” I spat out, my voice sharp and firm. “Alan, you’re one of the most confident, most talented people I have ever met. Our worth isn’t defined by titles or wealth.”Alan’s eyes flicked up to meet mine, and for a moment, there was tense silence between us.I leaned in closer to him, our warm breaths mingling in the air between us. “I don’t care about status or wealth,” I whispered, my voice gentle and tender. “Those things don’t matter to me.”His face turned a deeper shade of crimson, his body trembling beside mine. I giggled softly, and I couldn't resist leaning in and pressing a gentle kiss to his cold cheek. Alan froze, his heart pounding loud enough for me to he
ROWAN’S POVShe hesitated for a second, biting her lower lip. “She’s already invited me, hasn't she? Maybe... maybe it’s time I stopped seeing her as my enemy. I don’t think she hates me anymore.”I studied her closely through the mirror, my brows furrowed. Matilda had always been timid, hiding behind others. But deep down, I knew she wasn't a bad person.“Well then, I guess I'll come with you,” I said after a moment.Matilda smiled faintly. “Thank you, Rowan,” she whispered.Despite my calm exterior, I was feeling a strange tension gnawing at me. Something was disturbing me and—it was Isabelle. For some reason I couldn't explain, I also wanted more interactions with her. Ever since she suddenly stopped clinging to me or chasing me, I couldn’t shake the unease I was feeling in my gutIt was as though I lost something without even realizing it.ISABELLE’S POVOnce I left the supermarket, I went straight to Alan’s modest home with the groceries I bought. My mind still wandered briefly
ISABELLE’S POVI turned around, only to find myself face-to-face with Beta Rowan. He had a dark scowl on his face, but his stern expression immediately softened when he saw Matilda still lying helplessly on the floor. Before I could say a single word, she scrambled off the ground and rushed towards him to stand behind his towering figure, clutching his arm and casting a wary glance back at me with an innocent expression.Rowan watched the scene with confusion, his gaze flickering between us. His frown deepened when he looked down at Matilda behind him.“What’s going on here?” Rowan asked, his deep voice filled with concern as he looked between both of us.Matilda, looked up at him with her doe-like eyes, “I-It’s nothing, really. Princess Isabelle was just... pressuring me.” she said, her voice trembling.Rowan's eyes whipped back towards me, a deep frown marrying his features. I could see the questions in his gaze, wondering who to believe.I can't believe Matilda would go as far as l
RYKER’S POVI stared at Isabelle in utter shock, her confident confession hanging heavy in the air between us. Her words were bold and direct, cutting through my usual stoic defences like a sharp blade.“I’m here because of you,” she said and I couldn't get her voice out of my head.It wasn’t just her words but the way she said them—with so much sincerity and brashness—that managed to throw me off balance. For the first time in so many years, I was not sure of how to respond. For a man like me, used to control, logic and order, the raw emotion I could feel in her voice left me almost speechless. My wolf growled, urging me to respond and acknowledge the feelings stirring deep within me. But I just couldn’t, I needed to leave.I was flustered under her prying gaze, my face turning a deep shade of red that spread down my neck.I took a step back, “I... I need to review a case file,” I blurted, stumbling over my words as I quickly retreated.Without waiting for her reply, I spun on my he
