“Mom, can I have some more gummy bears?” Bryelle, Mayeli's two-year-old daughter asked, batting her long lashes that perfectly complemented her lovely face.
Bryelle was dazzlingly beautiful just like Mom and Dad, though she took her father's light blue eyes, his perfect lips, and his curly black hair. For age she was a smart, precarious child, always asking questions that left Mayeli stunned. She probably got that trait from both of her parents.
“No baby, you've had too much already, let's get you to school”, Mayeli replied, standing up to grab her brown Louis Vuitton handbag.
She was wearing a dark brown Everlane suit, with matching brown Steve Madden heels to complete the look. Her blonde hair was packed in a neat, low bun. As always, she looked perfect.
“Mom, please”.
“I'm sorry baby, let's get going. Uncle Nixen is going to pick me up from school today, cos I won't be back early and Grandma has somewhere to go”.
She straightened her daughter's white short-sleeved shirt, neatly tucked into a navy blue skirt. On her white socks, and covered feet were black Jane shoes, and her long hair was held in a neat ponytail.
She pulled at her daughter, heading for the door.
“Bye Mom”, she said to her pretty fifty-year-old mother who was sitting at the table munching a cookie.
“Bye Grandma”, Brielle’s little voice said.
“Bye, my babies”.
Mayeli unlocked her car door, carefully placing Bryelle in the child's car seat before heading for the driver's seat. Her mind was occupied with the words her mother had spoken two years ago when she informed her of her pregnancy.
“Do you have any plans on telling him?” Her mother had asked in a broken voice.
“Not, mother”, she replied.
She knew couldn't tell him. What would he take her as? A whore who slept with him, just to stick. She would raise the child on her own.
“Why did you do it, Mayeli? I thought you had gotten over him. I know the two of you were quite close, but isn't eight years enough? It's been a long time child.
“I don't have feelings for him Mother”
“Then why did you do it?”
“I don't know, I just missed him. Besides, I was on pills so I didn't expect to conceive”.
“He deserves to know Mayeli, she's his child too”.
“I don't know how to tell him, Mom”.
“Promise you'll tell him when you're ready. Promise me you'll give your baby the gift of knowing her real father. Please promise me my love”.
“Fine, I promise Mother, please stop crying already, it's hurting me”.
She had promised her mother she would tell him, but she wasn't certain she dared to ever do that.
“Aren't we leaving Mom?” Bryelle's little voice called her out of her reverie.
“Sure baby”.
She dropped off Bryelle at school and headed straight for the office. Nixen had just emailed her about an urgent meeting.
“Good morning boss”, Kreed said as she walked through the large doors of JCK firm. He looked nice in his brown Khaki trousers, White turtle neck, and white sneakers.
“Morning Kreed. Where is the meeting holding?”
“The board room. They're waiting for you”.
“Thanks Kreed”.
Trust her to be late to important meetings. She did that eight out of ten times.
She could hear noises emanating from the boardroom as she got closer. She wondered what the meeting was.
“Good morning Mayeli”, the voices of her co-workers chorused.
All eyes turned to her.
“Great, talk about making a quiet entrance”, she screamed in her head.
“Good morning guys, morning Nixen”. Nixen threw her an admiring smile.
“You look spectacular”, he mouthed, making her blush.
“Thank you”, She mouthed back, putting on her best, cute, innocent girl smile.
Nixen Smith was her boss slash the CEO of JCK law firm.
He had been sweet on her since her first day as a junior lawyer at JCK, over the years she had thought his crush would wane, but from the look of things, it grew stronger.
He had asked her to be his girlfriend during the May date on New Year's Day, and she had given him a simple “I'd need some time to think about it”.
Nixen was a great option, probably a perfect one. He was a CEO of a successful law firm at twenty-six, the son of a multi-billionaire, and a strikingly handsome man at that, but she wasn't sure was ready to give her heart out just yet. Besides, it longed for only one man, Killian Rylas.
“Okay, since we're all present, let's get on to the purpose of the meeting”, Nixen said, standing up. He was wearing an expensive-looking Navy-blue suit that contrasted wonderfully with his straight golden-brown hair which he had allowed to fall slightly on his forehead. His bright hazel eyes were focused on Mayeli.
Chairs wheeled closer to the large, brown table, and all eyes in the spacious, white-painted boardroom focused on the boss, Nixen.
“As you all know, Soter Group and Octavia Limited signed a partnership deal two years ago, or is there anyone here who's unaware?” Nixen asked.
Mayeli gulped. She hadn't heard of them in the past two years, that was mostly because she was trying her best to avoid Killian and anything else that reminded her of his existence, though.
“No”, the crowd of men and women mumbled.
“Good. The good news is that they've asked us to be their legal representative, which is huge considering how global they are. This could mean a lot of deals and contracts for us, and we need to do our best for them. We don't want to blow this up”. Nixen's eyes perused the crowd to be sure they were listening.
When he was certain his words had sunk into them, he continued.
“We'll need a lawyer to formally take up all of tMayr cases, with the assistance of others of course, but whoever is picked would be our firm’s representative when it comes to tMayr legal matters”.
“So?” James, one of the firm's most influential lawyers, asked. It was obvious he already thought himself the perfect candidate for the role. He was quite a proud one.
The Senior partners in the room exchanged knowing glances, and Mayeli tried her best to stifle the laughter threatening to spill. Diora made a face at her, making it harder.
“So, we would vote. The people eligible for this position must be senior lawyers though. All you have to do is write a name and toss it in the basket on the table. I'd give you five minutes to be done with that, then I'll announce the winner”.
He placed the basket on the table and sat down.
The men and women in the room set to work, scribbling and tossing. After five minutes, Nixen stood up to announce the winner.
Mayeli prayed silently that she wouldn't get the role. She wanted nothing to do with Killian, and in truth, she couldn't bear to face him, which would be quite impossible if she became his company's legal representative.
“We have a winner”, Nixen announced.
Mayeli could feel the tension in the room. Her sweaty palms were clammed tightly together.
“Claudia Williams”, Nixen's deep voice boomed. “Congrats Claudia, I'll see you in my office in a few minutes to discuss the details. The meeting is dismissed”.
“Me?” Claudia choked, surprised.
Claudia was a middle-aged, tall, pretty lady. She was one of the oldest lawyers at JCK, and with her professionalism, brains, and experience, she deserved to be chosen. Mayeli had worked under her as a junior lawyer when she first joined JCK.
Mayeli let out a deep breath she hadn't known she was holding. Relief washed through her.
She remained seated as the crowd of men and women left the room. Some are happy, while some are livid with anger, and most are jealous.
“Congrats Claudia”, echoed throughout the room.
“I was hoping it would be you”.
Mayeli looked up to see Nixen's tall, perfect body looming over her.
“And I was dearly hoping it wouldn't be me,” she said in her head.
“The people made their choice, and I support it fully”, she said out loud.
“Claudia won you by only one vote. She was just lucky”.
“It's fine”.
“How about dinner on Saturday?”
She threw him an assessing glance. The man simply would not just give up. And somehow, she found herself being drawn to him. She wondered if she was developing feelings for him too.
“Dinner is fine”.
“Alright, I have to get going now”.
She simply nodded watching him leave. She silently thanked God again for not being chosen, before standing up and heading to her office.
Killian peered at the neatly arranged stack of files on his large oak table, his pen in his mouth. His office was one of the best in England, with its transparent glass walls displaying a lovely view of the city. The walls of his office were painted a deep shade of green, matching perfectly with his white cushions, a large, dark-brown oak table, and a black office chair.A few paintings hung on the wall, while a large, glass shelf held neat stacks of his favourite books and his numerous trophies.Right now, he wasn't in the mood to admire the works of his decorators. His mind was on something more urgent.A construction worker had just sued Soter Group for the injury he had sustained while using their product and was demanding a million dollars as compensation.“Crazy”, Killian muttered angrily. From the look of things, the odds were against them, and the man seemed most likely to win the case. Plus, the fool had hired a well-known, ace lawyer.Killian had called the JCK firm to infor
“Come in”, Claudia's calm voice said from the other end.She took another deep breath as she walked into Claudia's spacious office. The office was of the best in the firm, located on the highest floor. It was painted a lovely shade of blue and white, and its glass walls overlooked the city of Bristol. You could lose yourself by just staring through those walls.Mayeli sat in front of Claudia's large oak table, waiting for her to finish her phone conversation.Claudia’s pretty, high-cheekboned face was twisted in concentration. Her short, curly, black hair fell in waves a little past her shoulders, bouncing slightly with each movement. It blended perfectly with her black, expensive-looking suit. She looked elegant.“Mayeli darling, good to see you, it's been a while.Mayeli threw her a polite smile. Claudia had always been very kind to her.“It's good to see you too Claudia”.“Okay, let's get to my reason for calling you. As you know, I was elected to represent Soter Group, in the last
Killian stared through Nixen's glass office walls at the beautiful lady with long blonde hair as she walked to her black 2023 Audi Q5, with a pretty little girl that looked almost exactly like her. He was certain she was the woman he had met at the Opera two years ago.He looked the way her Olive green suit complimented her glowing, pale skin. Her lovely blonde hair was packed in a neat ponytail, highlighting her heart-shaped face. His mind went to a night two years ago when he had held her body naked in his arms. He could still remember her exotic scent. He had only feigned ignorance earlier because she seemed very uncomfortable with his presence, and Nixen seemed to have something for her. He didn't want to cause any problems. But he wasn't sure he could keep to that when it came to her.How could he forget her? He had thought about her frequently in the past two years. He tracked her down and waited patiently for the right time to meet her. But he never found her. And after all th
Mayeli stared at the surprised face of Killian. Had he not expected her to come? She had purposely kept him waiting. He could keep up with that at least. She loved the way his eyes raked her body in a very sensual way, as though he was seeing her for the first time. She was wearing a little green, flowing evening gown, with the split coming to rest just above her thighs. On her feet were silver Zara heels and her hands held a matching silver Chanel purse. Her long carefully styled blonde hair fell in waves down to her waist. She had applied only a light make-up and put on a silver necklace with matching dangling silver earrings. In all, she looked stunning as always.“I…I umm, I didn't think you would come”, Killian managed to say after minutes of staring. She loved the way his not too overly simian black, LV shirt highlighted his perfect body, blending with his curly black hair that he had left to fall over his face, this evening. It was the first in years she had seen him so casuall
“You don't like the food?” Nixen's soft voice asked, breaking Mayeli from her deep thoughts. He was looking as stunning as always in a simple, expensive-looking, Navy-blue straight trousers and white shirt. His straight black hair was left to fall slightly on his face making him look more handsome. Three of his buttons were left undone, exposing his well-built tanned chest. He looked ravishingly hot!“I love it”, she replied, throwing him a quizzical look. Why had he asked? Her thoughts had been on the event of last night, and she had probably phased out without knowing. Tears burned her eyelids as she recalled the memory. Killian and she had made love so passionately, relishing each other's comfort, and for a moment, she thought they could probably work out. But he left without a note or a goodbye. He left her like a cheap whore. And still, she had stared at her iPhone 14 pro almost a thousand times today, waiting for a text from him. How pathetic of her to think he was still her Ki
Mayeli stared at her reflection for probably the tenth time this morning. She was having her first official meeting with Killian as his company's legal representative. As much as she tried avoiding him, she couldn't. He just always had a way of getting under her skin. She was starting to miss him though. She hadn't seen for almost two weeks now, and strangely, it bothered her.She checked her reflection out again, wondering if she had overdressed. She was wearing a long, corporate, long-sleeved, body hug gown that stopped well past her knees. The front part, along with one of the sleeves was white, while the other was black. On her feet was a pair of white Jimmy Choo heels, while her hands held a matching white purse. She let her long, blonde hair fall in wavy curls down her waist, and applied light makeup. She looked perfect. She did a little crazy dance, satisfied with her look before going to the kitchen to get breakfast ready. She finished breakfast, dropped Bryelle off at schoo
Killian stared at Mayeli, trying his best to keep a neutral expression, but deep down, he was glad about how easily her body had reacted to his.He moved away from her and went to sit at his table. The tension in the office was a bit too intense. She continued her explanation, while he watched her. He had been mostly watching her from the beginning, but she had been too absorbed in the presentation to notice. And mostly, he was grateful for that.He couldn't get his mind off the image of her, getting down from her Audi Q5, and walking towards the building. She looked breathtaking. What was that you just said? How did he know? Of course, he had been watching her through his transparent glass wall.To be honest, he had been waiting for her. He still remembered how his heart raced when he set his eyes on her. She just seemed to always look alluring, exquisite, resilient, and graceful.Mayeli had a quality he never saw in any other woman, and it pulled him to her.“She was making out with
Mayeli looked around as they walked into an Italian restaurant.Truce walked towards a table already occupied by a young man. Tyse, CEO of Octavia? Killian's crew seemed to consist solely of billionaires.Tyse looked stunning in a well-tailored white suit, with a white shirt inside. He wasn't wearing a tie, and the first three buttons of his shirt were undone, making him look even sexier. From the look of things, his jet-black hair was quite long, and seeing it packed in a bun brought out the structure of his handsome face. He had a high cheekbone, and thin pink lips, with warm brown eyes that were currently on her.Killian sat beside Tyse, while Truce sat opposite them, gesturing for her to sit beside him. Which meant, she sat exactly opposite Killian. Quite heartwarming.Truce leaned over asking her if she was comfortable, and she nodded.Just like Killian and Tyse, he was stunning. He had curly blonde hair, high cheekbones, grey eyes, and perfect full lips. She spotted a deep dimpl
Mayeli rolled her eyes before she picked up her sister's call. Shaila had been calling her nonstop. Who gave a person six calls at just 6 am?“Hello?” Mayeli said into the mouthpiece, carefully rolling out of her bed to avoid waking Bryelle up. She walked to her bedroom balcony. The gush of wind that hit her instantly took away any ounce of sleep she still felt.“Have you seen the headlines?” Shaila screamed. Mayeli's eyes narrowed. Her sister was mostly always dramatic, but this was quite extreme.“What is in the headlines?” Mayeli asked, strolling to the bedside table to pick up her laptop. She drew aside her curtains, letting warm sun-ray bath her room through the floor-to-ceiling windows.“I don't think it's something I can tell you over the phone”. It was Shaila's way. Make her curious, then leave her hanging. With a sigh, Mayeli opened her MacBook Pro. She went to her browser, and typed the words “Killian Reon”.Before she clicked on the enter button, she decided to make a cup
Mayeli sat behind after Tyse had left her, chatting with some of her colleagues at work who had been invited to the party. She had been surprised to see them, but she was glad. They had helped her get her mind off Killian.“Can I talk to you for a second?” A familiar voice asked Mayeli. Nixen.Mayeli was a bit surprised. She hadn't seen Nixen in a while. She didn't know he was invited to the party. Of course, he would have been invited. He was Killian's brother after all.Mayeli managed a smile, before she excused herself from her group, and followed Nixen. They stopped by a less crowded spot.“It's been a while, Nixen”, Mayeli said.Mayeli ran his hands through his now curly hair, and the curls fell back on his forehead. He was dressed in a black Brioni suit with a white shirt inside. The first three buttons of his shirt were left open, revealing his well-built hairy chest. Mayeli took in Nixen’s new hairstyle with a smile. He was trying to look like Killian.“Mayeli, I have missed
Mayeli's heartbeat was racing heartbeats she watched Killian lower his lips to hers. Their lips were an inch apart when the twisting of the bathroom door handle interrupted them.Mayeli quickly pushed Killian away and adjusted her hair. She turned to see Killian standing with a confused expression.“He shouldn't be here, it's the ladies' room. How would you explain when the headline carries it tomorrow? He's Killian Reon after all”, Mayeli's inner voice whispered. For once, she agreed perfectly with that voice.Quickly, she pulled Killian and shoved him into one of the restrooms. Then she took out her phone, and leaned on the restroom door, pretending to be busy chatting.“Hi”, the middle-aged woman who walked in said with a smile. She was plus-sized, and her black V-neck gown could barely contain her shape.“Hey”, Mayeli replied, managing a smile.“Are you waiting for someone?” The lady inquired.“No”, Mayeli answered curtly, hoping she'd do her thing and go away quickly. Mayeli hear
Mayeli stared at the rolls of cars parked in front of Killian's house as Nathan eased his black Phantom into one of the very few parking spaces available. The parking area was filled with several expensive-looking cars. From the look of things, there was a high turnout for Tyse's party.Mayeli wasn't surprised. Tyse was a young, renowned, and very handsome multi-billionaire. He'd have a lot of friends. Besides, he was Killian Reon’s best friend. That added to the popularity. When Nathan killed the engine, Mayeli hurriedly opened her car door and stepped out, walking towards the entrance of Killian's house without waiting for her two companions. She wearing the dress Killian had bought her and she was about to walk into his house. She didn't want to walk in with Nathan by her side or worse, holding hands with him. Killian was already angry at her, she didn't want to add to it.“Don't an in such, Mayeli. I know you can't wait to see Killian, but you don't have to leave us behind”, Nico
Killian clasped his Samsung Galaxy Z Fold tightly, resisting the urge to call her. He had been doing that for a while now. Mayeli was messing with his head. First she liked him, now he liked her, she wasn't interested in him. It didn't make sense. And now they were other guys? Huff, what was he going to do?“You said you wouldn't contact her first”, Tyse said, lying on Killian's bed. “I love your room, Zed”.Killian ran his hands through his hair, letting out a frustrated sigh. “I don't know what to do, Cas”.“I'm sorry you got rejected, but I think you should let her be”.“She said she needed time to think. I didn't get rejected”.Tyse chuckled, sitting up. “That's also a way of saying I'm not interested”.Killian’s already depressed mood dampened more. Why would Mayeli reject him? They spent quality time together, and she had been happy, so what was her reason?“Perhaps she likes the Nathan dude. Didn't you say they were so close?” Tyse asked.Killian’s head throbbed at the memory.
Mayeli stared at the glass of cocktail in front of her. It was Friday, and she and Nicole were hanging out at their favourite garden spot. She had been badly craving a cocktail, so Nicole allowed her just a glass and nothing more.“You should eat your food, Mayeli, it's delicious. Especially the crabs”, Nicole said with a chuckle.“I just want another glass of cocktail”, Mayeli mumbled, giving Nicole a pout.Nicole rolled her eyes. “You can keep staring at the food then”.“As you wish”.“Mayeli, you should eat your food right now!"“Fine. Why are you so scared?” Mayeli grumbled, taking a bite of her sandwich. They were silent for a while, and Nicole tapped consistently on her screen, laughing silently. “Who's that?” Mayeli asked.“Nobody”.Mayeli adjusted the loose strands of hair that were flapping over her face. The day was quite windy. “You should stop laughing aloud then, you're only making me curious”.“Whatever”, Nicole mumbled absent-mindedly.Mayeli’s phone beeped, and she pi
Mayeli wiped away the tears falling down her cheeks, they just wouldn't stop coming. “Mayeli, what's wrong?” Killian asked for the umpteenth time. He looked like a mother hen unsure of how to take care of its chicks. He was driving her to her house.Mayeli looked away, wondering whether to tell him. He would be so angry. He would yell, and he'd probably not want to see her face ever again.Killian pulled into her driveway, killed the engine, and came over to open her door for her.“Hey come, let's get you inside”, he mumbled, taking her hands. He led her to the kitchen, sat her on a stool and proceeded to the fridge. He took a bottle of water and poured her a glass, giving it to her. His face still had the anxious look, and it was funny because she had never seen Killian anxious. He cupped her cheeks in his hands. “Are you feeling better?” He asked.Mayeli nodded, staring at the glass of water, and building the courage to open up to him.“Good”, Killian mumbled, then dipped his head
Nathan rubbed Mayeli's belly gently, watching the scan.“How do you feel?” He asked Mayeli.“It's a bit cold, but I feel fine”, Mayeli replied.Killian took Mayeli's hands. “I didn't know doctors were this interactive with their patients”, he mumbled. What was wrong with him? Mayeli thought with a chuckle.“You've been complaining nonstop Mr Reon, I think you might as well take over my role”, Nathan fired back. The two men had been arguing consistently for a while now. “Well, I guess you're better at the job”, Killian replied, looking away.“At least you know that”, Nathan grumbled.“What have we got? Is it a boy or a girl?” Mayeli asked, interrupting the argument.Nathan turned to her with a teasing smile that showed off his dimple. “What do you think?” He asked, rubbing her hair lightly.“Now you would make me guess?” Mayeli asked laughing. It had been so long since she saw Nathan, and she had forgotten how playful he was. He always seemed to make a situation lighter no matter how
Mayeli walked into the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow, with a smile. She took a deep breath as she stared at the familiar environment. She had been there two years ago when she found out she was pregnant with Bryelle. At first, she had been disoriented and seeking an abortion, until she met Doctor Nathan, a young, extremely handsome gynaecologist who was only two years older than her.Nathan had kindly convinced her against an abortion and ran her through every step of her pregnancy. It had been obvious he had a crush on her back then, but he was with someone, so nothing went on between them.“Hey, Mayeli, good to see you after such a long time. How have you been?” Doctor Janet, Nathan’s assistant, screamed. She was standing at the reception table, probably talking to the receptionist, before Mayeli walked in.Janet was a tall, chubby woman with genuine warmth overflowing from her. She had treated Mayeli like a younger sister, rather than a client. Janet hadn't changed
