Chapter 1: Sofia Sanders
Sofia’s POV
“Damn,” I cursed under my breath. I couldn’t believe I woke up late again. This is bad, my manager will surely fire me. I can’t let that happen. I’m broke already; I can’t bear to lose this job.
This past few days, I’ve been sleeping a lot. I don’t know why if it is because I’m tired or stressed or whatever. I tapped my cheeks to wake myself up and took a deep breath.
“All right, Sofia, you need to get ready now. You only have a few minutes to take a bath and get changed,” I mumbled to myself.
I got off my bed and quickly went inside the bathroom. I comb my long brown hair as I wear my three-inch black shoes.
I glanced over the wall clock; another curse came out of my mouth. I only have less than thirty minutes. I’ll pray there is no traffic, but I doubt it. Fuck!
I grabbed my sling bag on my bed and went out of my apartment. Just think positive, Sofia. Who knows, maybe there’s a miracle. I shrugged my shoulders and called a taxi.
“This is the third time you’re late this week, Sofia.” I shut my mouth. For the second time, I wanted to correct. But the way Miss Gale’s looking at me now, I won’t dare to talk back.
She looked like she wanted to eat me alive. She’s only a few years older than me, she’s the big boss’ cousin so she became the manager.
“So, tell me a valid reason why I won’t fire you today,” she added as she raised an eyebrow. I inhaled deeply. I don’t know how I’ll make her believe, but I guess I should try.
“I woke up late; I’m very sorry about that. I promise it won’t happen again,” I almost cringe at what I said. She smirked, “Really? But you always do, Sofia. If you’re not working for two years for this Café, you’re long fired.”
I nodded and looked down. The big boss’ relocated me here a couple of months ago. This is the main branch of the café; the payment is higher too. If I lose this job today, I won’t know what to do anymore. In this city, finding a decent job is hard.
I look up when I hear her sigh, “Okay then. This is your only hope, Sofia. If you mess this up again, you’re out.” She said. She even rolled her eyes before turning her back on me.
A smile came across my lips. Even if she’s acting that way, she’s actually nice. I was smiling as I followed her. I quickly change into my uniform and start working.
It is only turning eight in the morning, but there are a lot of customers already. I have been living alone for almost seven years now. I was seventeen when I moved out of my aunt’s house. Now I’m twenty-four and still single.
“Sofia! Can you take table four’s order?” Pia asked me a favour. I looked at her and nodded, “Sure.” I went where table four was located. There, I saw three girls and two boys. The three girls were wearing their cheerleading outfits.
They were laughing loudly. I fake a cough to get their attention. All of them stopped laughing and looked at me. I hate the way they look at me.
“Oh, you look familiar…” One of the girls said. I remain emotionless, “You look like the homeless girl we saw yesterday!” She added. All of them burst into laughter. That’s not funny; how dare they make fun of someone they didn’t know?
“How pitiful,” the two other girls second the motion. I badly want to roll my eyes now. What the heck are they talking about?
“I’m sorry to break your fantasy, ladies, but I need to take your order now,” I seriously said. They all stopped laughing and seriously looked at me, too.
“Come on bitch! You’re such a killjoy.” My brow furrowed. All right, Sofia, calm down. You can’t mess this up, right? You need this job to survive.
This is not the first time I have encountered someone like them, but this pisses me off. “She’s right. You can’t give us that look!”
What look?
“Come on guys, just tell your order. Leave this beauty alone,” One of the boys said. He was looking at me now… particularly on my… damn, he’s looking at my chest now. Pervert!
“Really, Jason? You call her beauty?” Is she jealous now? The man laughed and pulled her closer, “There’s nothing with that, honey. Look at her,” this man is a certified asshole. How can he compliment someone like that in front of his girlfriend?
“She’s pretty, isn’t she?” The girl pushed him away and slapped his chest. “Are you freaking kidding me?!” We are getting attention now. Before they can shout to each other, I talk first.
“Please, ma’am, Sir, don’t argue here,” I calmly said. She glared at me, “Don’t talk. This is your fault, you slut!” she stood up and pointed at me. My eyes widened; what did she call me? Slut? The heck?
“You’re a jerk, Jason. I can’t believe you!” She’s screaming now like crazy. “And you! You’re seducing my boyfriend with your titties, huh! What a whore,” huh? This is absurd. I was about to defend myself, but the guy named Jason talked.
“It’s not her fault why her body is hot as hell, Ven. And it’s not her fault why you’re insecure now.” Am I really seeing this? Just like, what the hell?
“Are you saying that I’m not hot? I’m hotter than her!” Yes, she’s hot. Hot-tempered lady. Jason laughed, “Are you sure?”
I facepalm mentally. Ven’s eyes widened. A sharp sound came across his cheeks. She slapped him. “Ma’am---” I can’t even finish my word because she slapped me too.
Damn, that’s it. I slapped her back. I can’t find any valid reason for her to hurt me physically. Her eyes widened; she looked shocked.
“How dare you!” I glared at her. “No, how dare you!”
“What’s going on here? Sofia!” I closed my eyes tightly when I heard my manager’s voice. Damn, I’m screwed.
“Are you the manager?” Ven ask her. I saw Gale raised an eyebrow, “Yes, I am. What happens? Is there something wrong, Ma’am?” Ven slowly smirked.
“Well, there is,” she glanced at me. I can sense something so bad. “May I know what is bothering you?” I took a deep breath, damn. There’s a huge possibility that I’ll lose my job today.
“Are your employees always acting this way?” Acting this way? Did she mean slapping her back? Well, she deserves it. She insulted and hurt me physically.
“Pardon, but I don’t understand you ma’am.”
I saw Jason hold her hand and tried to pull her down, but she resisted. “I believe this bitch is your employee. Let me tell you, she’s working unprofessionally. She’s seducing my boyfriend right in front of me.”
I shut my eyes close. Seducing my ass. I barely did and said something. Gale looked at me with disbelief in her eyes.
“I’m sorry on her behalf, Ma’am,” this time I gave Gale a questioning look. What is she doing? I didn’t do anything.
“Sorry is not enough.”
“I know, ma’am. We’re terribly sorry for this---“The girl cut her off. “No, I want her out now. Kick her out, fire her!”
What? This is insane. How dare she to say that? I’m not losing this job because of this shit! I was about to talk, but Gale shook her head.
“All right, ma’am.”
My eyes widened even more. What, Gale agreed? This is unfair. Damn it. “Sofia, pack your things up and wait for me inside the locker room.”
“Gale---”
“Just go.” I let out a sigh. I can’t believe this. Before I leave, I look at Ven. She’s smirking devilishly now. She should be happy—this brat. I removed my apron as I walked towards the locker room.
I was done packing my things when Gale knocked on the door to get my attention.
“Am I fired for real?” I ask her. She slowly nodded as she approached me. “I’m afraid you are. I warned you this morning, Sofia. Don’t mess things up, but you still did. We’re lucky enough she didn’t leave negative remarks.”
“It’s not my fault, Gale. I didn’t even do anything except the slap part. But she insulted and hurt me,” I defended. She shook her head, “I know. But you know life is unfair, right.”
Yeah, damn unfair. I close my mouth shut, “This is all I can do for you, Sofia.” She gave me an envelope. “I wish you a better life,” she added before leaving.
Another sigh escapes from my lips. Gale gave me my last salary. After two years of working, this is how it ends. This is making me sad, but I can’t do anything but accept this.
I was about to call a taxi when my phone suddenly rang. It was an unknown number, so my brow furrowed, but I still answered it.
“Hello? Is this Sofia Sanders from 1217 Street?”
“Umm, yes, I am,” I answer.
“This is Mariel from the fire department. Your apartment was on fire. I would like you to come over and see the situation,” she replied, making my eyes widen in shock.
What the fuck?
Chapter 2: DesperateSofia’s POV“What the fuck should I do now?” I asked myself problematically. I’m technically broke and homeless now. How is this possible? In just a single fucking day? How lucky I am, darn.A few of my things were saved but mostly got burned. I only have three pairs of clothes, my phone and a little cash with me. I groan in annoyance. I have no better choice now, then?I need to go back to my aunt’s house. I don’t even know if she’ll agree to let me in temporarily. Damn it. I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply.I took my phone out of my bag and dialled my aunt’s number. My heart is pounding so hard; I’m nervous. After seven long years, this is the first time I will contact her again.“Hello, who is this,” A high-pitched voice welcomed me. I quickly move away, the phone in my ear. Shit, what was that? After a few seconds of recovery, I recognised that voice. It’s Malia’s voice, Aunt Matilda’s daughter.“Hey, this is me---”“How the fuck do I know who the me you wer
Chapter 3: DebtSofia’s POV“So, you are staying here for two days?” Aunt Matilda asks me suddenly while we are peacefully eating in the dining room. I looked up and nodded, “Yes, aunt. Just two days,” I confirmed.“Okay. How will you pay me then if you don’t have any work?” She asked again. Here we go again. She’s always like that.“Don’t worry, aunt. I will pay you. Just give me time.” I badly wanted to roll my eyes right now. She’s still the same woman I knew before.“Really, Sofia? Pay my mom back? You don’t even have any place to stay. Are you kidding us?” I glared at her. Like mother like daughter, huh? If I had any better choice right now, I would never have come here to seek help.I fake a smile, “Chill, Malia. I’m not like you. I know how to find work,” I don’t want to be rude to her, but she’s making me. Her look darkened; I felt like she wanted to attack me, but she didn’t.“Please don’t argue in front of the food,” Aunt Matilda stopped us. Oh, this is the first time she di
Chapter 4: EmbarrassmentSofia’s POV“You need to stay here until his young master arrives,” Mr. Wu said. I look around the whole place. I feel nervous and thrilled at the same time. This place was screaming power and wealth. I can’t help but wonder what is my purpose here. “Are you listening, Miss Sanders?”“Yes. I’m listening. But may I ask why we are here? I thought I was used as payment. You will sell me, right?” Mr. Wu’s face remained serious, but I could see a little amusement in his eyes.“You think so?” He asked. I shook my head and laughed a little. “No. You know what? Even if you guys take me away, I don’t feel you bad at all,” I answered honestly. They look more harmless than my aunt. “I see. What do you think why you are here then?” I don’t know, but I have an idea.“I will work here as a maid? Or I’m right that you will sell me,” I joked the last part. I saw the edge of his lips rise, but just a second. His face went serious again, “None of the two. You will know later. H
Chapter 5: Marry MeSofia's POVI was just sitting on the sofa in the living room, watching a movie. Despite being calm, I couldn't explain the strange feeling I had. I never expected to see that in that room, and I still can't forget it. How could I forget such a scene, right? Oh God. Why did this happen to me?I took a deep breath and tried to focus on what I was watching. However, I was interrupted when I heard a rustle behind me, so I turned around. My lips sealed in shock. It was her, the woman he was having intimate relations with. She looked at me with disapproval. Well, it seems I ruined their moment.I didn't mean to. How would I know they were doing that over there? She rolled her eyes at me before finally leaving. She's got some attitude, huh?I just shrugged. I was about to go back to watching when my eyes caught something—a handsome, topless man. I couldn't help but admire his well-built body.I swallowed slowly. This guy has an amazing physique. I heard him clear his thr
Chapter 6: A DealSofia's POVDid I hear it right? Am I going to marry him? I looked at him in confusion. Why would he marry a poor girl like me? He looked rich, handsome and powerful. As he said a while ago, he can get any girl he likes. So why me? Something doesn't seem right here. What could he possibly gain from marrying me? I have nothing to offer him. Oh, wait, I do have something—the care, love, and beauty that I possess. I smiled to myself. Here I go again, super confident.I looked at him again, "You mean, marriage? Why? I mean, I'm beautiful, but I don't think that's enough reason for you to propose marriage to me," I confidently said. Damn, I'm daydreaming again. He looked at me intently. Wait, he didn't disagree that I'm beautiful. Does that mean he finds me attractive? It seems like this guy fancies me."So, what's the reason?" I asked again when he still didn't speak."I just need to get married, that's it. No other reason," he answered seriously.I raised an eyebrow, "
Chapter 7: The Wedding "Miss Sanders, the wedding will start in two minutes," a woman said to me. I nodded and gave a small smile.Everything happened so quickly. It feels like just yesterday when all of this happened. I never imagined I'd be getting married today.Although it's not my dream wedding, I wish my parents were still alive to see this."Mother, Father, your only child is getting married now," I whispered, biting my inner lip to hold back tears. I miss them terribly.I lost myself for a moment. Why am I crying? I shouldn't be; it'll ruin my makeup."Sofia Sanders?" I heard a gentle voice beside me. A blonde girl is standing there.I raised an eyebrow. Who is she? She's not the same woman who informed me earlier."Yes, it's me," I confirmed. She nodded, "I'm Christy, your bridesmaid," she introduced herself.Look how absurd this marriage is. I don't even know my own bridesmaid. I didn't invite any relatives; I didn't want my aunt and cousin to attend. Because of them, this
Chapter 8: Marcus Sterling Sofia's POVWhen I wake up in the morning, my head hurts so much. Damn, hangover. I yawned and stretched out my arms. What time is it? Why does the sunray burn my skin? As I looked around, I suddenly froze. Hmm? Why am I here in my room? I thought I slept on the couch last night? My brow furrowed as I recalled yesterday.Yesterday... Oh, right yesterday I got married. And my husband-- husband in contract, left me alone here with some blonde girl. Then, I got drunk. I pursed my lips. I'm a married woman now.I shrugged off and did my morning routines. A couple of hours later, I found myself walking downstairs. I'm starving, I need to get some food to feed my dragons in my stomach. When I arrived in the dining room, I found him there. He's sitting on his chair like a king on his throne. My eyebrows rise, and a smirk is playing on my lips.He probably had fun last night. "Good morning," I greeted him. He didn't look at me instead he told me to sit down and hav
Chapter 9: Privacy Sofia's POV"Who are you? This is the first time I've seen you here?" Obviously, because I just got here. I took a deep breath, stood upright, and confidently looked at them. I didn't want them to belittle me on my first day of work.I lost my job last time because of a crazy customer. I remember that incident again. It's making my blood boil. "I'm Sofia Sanders, Mr. Marcus Sterling's assistant," I confidently said. They both stared in disbelief. It seemed like they couldn't believe it."You're his new assistant?" I nodded."How? We didn't see you yesterday when they had an interview," I raised an eyebrow. Obviously, I didn't attend. Because he's the one who hired me."He hired me," I said honestly. They exchanged glances, then laughed."This girl is hallucinating things. Mr. Sterling doesn't just hire anyone as you said. You either graduated from a prestigious university or academy, or... you have connections," the other one said with a smirk.Yes, I do have a co
