Chapter 22

Avery forced himself to wake up when he heard her scream. He turned to look at Zoe who was breathing very fast and he immediately turned on the bedside light.

She sat there, panting with her eyes wide open. He noticed beads of sweat around her forehead but the front of her top was drenched as though she had soaked it in water. She must have had a bad dream, Avery thought as he stood up and made the mistake of touching her.

“Zoe?”

At his touch, she flinched and screamed before falling from the bed with a really hard thud.

“Gosh, Zoe.” He called, yanking off the blanket from his body and going down the bed from his own side. “Are you okay?” He asked her.

“Stay back!” She exclaimed, making him to stop walking immediately. She took some minutes to study him and he obliged her, trying not to make her more scared than she already was. She needed lights, he thought. Bedside lamb aside, the room was otherwise dark so she needed light.
