Avery sighed, looking at his wristwatch. He needed an excuse to get out of this checkup, especially since Zoe was home. He didn’t want to sit down and talk about himself in front of anyone, especially her.

“Avery.” Doctor Phil called as he walked in and took Avery’s hand in his. “It’s been a while.”

“It has just been a month, doctor.”

“No. two months.” The doctor answered. “You missed last month’s and you had an excuse. Hope there is no excuse this morning seeing that you are already dressed for work.”

“It won’t take long.” His mother said, interrupting them. “It usually doesn’t take long, so let’s get on with it.”

They all went into the living room, leaving him with no choice but to follow them. As they seated, Zoe strolled into the room with a surprised look on her face.
