view moreOnce again he had walked past me like I did not exist. Like I was a piece of furniture that simply stayed put and watched its owner walk by, unable to utter a word.
I opened my mouth to call out to him but the words hung in my throat as I reminisced on what had happened the last few times that I tried to speak to him. I certainly did not want a repeat of that but how long would we continue like this?I looked up again and saw that he was long gone, leaving me to bask in the scent of his signature cologne that lingered for longer than it was supposed to.I stared down at the flashy rings on my finger and let out a shaky breath. He never wore his ring, what was the point of wearing mine all over the place when the man I was married to did not even value our union? I was nothing more than a burden to him and he did well to show his thorough dislike for me.I glanced at the calendar on my phone and grimaced. It was a painful reminder that I had been married for half a year and I had never had a full conversation with my supposed husband because asides ignoring me, he always found ways to totally avoid me by going on long, unending trips to wherever. No calls, texts, emails, nothing. I always found out about these trips from his employees because he found them more appealing to talk to than his lawfully wedded wife.I hated having to be a complainer but there was nothing else I could do but call his family to call him to order. I didn't want to call ever since but I didn't want to spend the rest of my life stuck with a man that hated me."Good morning madam."I looked up and met with Malia's concerned eyes."Malia, I've told you to call me Hannah." I repeated, knowing that she would still not heed to my words. She gave me a knowing smile. I was right."Breakfast is served." She informed me."I'm not really hungry." I declined with a slight head shake."Lost your appetite again?"I hummed, "What else is new?""I'm heading out to see," "His mother." She knew me a little too well. "I hope she can talk sense into him this time." She added with a displeased mutter."I hope so too." I said barely above a whisper, glancing up at the large framed photo of him that hung up on the wall in front of me."I really want you two to work out.""I'll have breakfast at Mom's house. See you later Malia." I gave her a soft pat on the shoulder that was more comforting for me than her before sashaying my way to the front door.My heels echoed in the lobby while I surfed through my bag for my sunglasses. Sunscreen or not, I needed all the protection I could get from the scorching summer sun."Louis!" I called out for the driver. I was in no mood to drive myself today. The glum I felt could lead me into something I didn't want, god forbid that I would get into accident coupled with my plight. That would be imminent death."Yes ma'am." He scurried over from the garage, to the bottom of the steps I stood on."Is the car ready?""Yes. I'll bring it right around.""Thank you." I said, just before he scurried away to get the Lexus RX 350 I had gotten as a wedding gift. It was another painful reminder but I pushed past that and got into the backseat when Louis parked in front of me.I told him where we were headed and laid back to enjoy the ride.It took a while due to mild traffic but we arrived at the Hawkins Villa safe and sound.I paused to ring the bell at the doorstep but eventually changed my mind. I wasn't a stranger to this household. I went into the large living space that was quiet as usual, my heels were probably the only sound as they echoed while they clicked the smooth tiles. As always I found her seated in the kitchen, staring out into the wide expanse of land that made up the backyard."Mom?"Her sassy blue eyes met my deep brown ones."Oh my baby!" She dropped her cup of tea and came over to me. I didn't wait for an invitation before yielding to her warm embrace."You look stunning." She twirled me around and I giggled."Thank you. You're the real stunner here though." I said, unable to stop myself from examining her classy ensemble that left her looking ageless."You flatter me." She coyly said."You're here early," she observed, glancing at her watch. I nodded."No work today?""Nope." I popped the'p'."You haven't had breakfast," she knew. "I'll have the cook make you something." She went ahead and called him before taking me with her to the porch."There has to be a reason why you're here so early." She said knowingly."Zach is back." I announce with a heavy sigh."He is? I didn't know that. His father didn't mention it." She seemed surprised. That was the effect he had on us these days. He was never home."He got back last night." I said."Any progress?""He didn't speak to me nor did he respond to my words. But what else is new?" I shrugged."This boy," her palm lifted to her forehead as she sighed. "I'll talk to him." She added."What difference does it make?" I was tired of that line."I'm really beginning to regret agreeing to this. I wish I could have just sold my father's company instead of wanting to keep it. I would be happier if I did." I said in a displeased mutter. "Maybe a part of you thought this would work out." She said.I couldn't lie to her, nor to myself. I always believed that though our marriage was arranged, we could work something out. I was a hopeless romantic and if the books I read were anything to go by, we should probably be in the denial stage of the love process with lots of sexual tension. But alas, my reality proved otherwise. My eyes lingered on her necklace for a while before speaking, "I did. I did think it would work. But now, I don't know anymore."She laid her palm on my left shoulder, "Try speaking to him when he gets back home tonight.""You know he won't respond." I turned away from her."You just have to keep trying. I promise I'll talk to him again and so will your father in-law. Everything's going to be fine." Her reassurance was alluring and had me building mansions in the air just as always. But I knew everything would fall on deaf ears. I had heard that line one too many times."I know you might be considering a divorce,"I actually was. I couldn't spend the rest of my life in such a gloomy union. One that had been heading for the rocks from the onset."But please Hannah, give him some more time. I'm sure this would work out. Can you do that for me?" She caressed my face.I managed a nod just before the cook came to announce that my meal was ready. At least if I couldn't get Zach to fill me, I could fill myself with food.Hey guys I have a request. Please do well to share what you learnt from this story. Months had rolled by and that chilly Sunday morning while basking in the warmth of worship, her water broke. It was about time, she had been waiting long enough even more anxiously cause they wanted to keep the baby's gender a surprise. The last gender reveal didn't end so well anyways. "How are we doing?" The nurse on duty that had come to be her fave asked when she walked in with Zach who had been frantic ever since she told him it was time. "Great! I guess," She shrugged. "You're sure?" "I'm not in a lot of pain so I don't even know if I can say I'm in labour." She chuckled nervously. Hannah had read about how excruciating labour pains were and now she that she wasn't feeling so much, she didn't know how to feel about it/ "I guess you're one of the lucky ones." The doctor piped up. "Blessed is the word doc." She corrected with a smile. "Babe are you sure you're not just enduring the pain." Zach worriedly asked. "I'm sure! I feel little aches here and there but they're not as
"Zach what are you doing here?" Marv asked in shock. He ignored her and rushed towards me, "Babe.""Stand back!" She screamed manically, startling all of us."Don't move any closer or I'll blow her brains out." She pointed the gun straight at my forehead. With his hands raised in surrender, Zach stepped back a few paces. "Marv just let her go. You don't have to do this.""It wouldn't have come to this if you had just done the right thing." She said through gritted teeth, not at all shifting the gun from the targeted spot on my forehead. I gulped."What do you mean?" He asked."Can't you see Zachary? I've loved you for so long and all you've ever done is have eyes for someone else. Anyone but me, I'm sick of it!""And this bitch," she shoved my head with the gun, "She always escapes every death trap I plot for her. I was so mad when I find out you weren't in when I set that apartment on fire,"I gasped. Just how far would this woman go to end me? Lord have mercy."You did what?" Zach
I had been awake, thankful they did not knock me unconscious. I didn't know who my abductor was and I was eager to see if it was whom I thought it was. I waited, tied up in a dimly lit room, somehow not terrified of whatever or whomever it was that was going to walk through that door. "I put my faith in Jesus, he never let me down. Faithful through generations, so why would make he fail now? He won't." I sang lowly, rocking myself as gently as I could on the steely seat. "HE won't fail... He won't." "Impressive voice." I chuckled. "Just as I thought," I said, smiling at her. "Hello Marv." "Hello Hannah." She returned my greeting with a smile splaying on her deep red lips. "So you had to resort to this...?" I looked around the ill-fated room once again finally able to express my irritation not because of the scrawny place but the person who had me locked up in here. She shrugged. "Yes I had to resort to this. You refused to stop getting in the way." Tilting my head, I asked,
"You'll be fine without me yeah?" He asked for the umpteenth time.I gave him a nod. "Yeah."He pulled me into another embrace. "Promise?""I'm fine. Just a little nauseous but I'm fine." I assured him once again."I just hope I can be back early enough so you wouldn't be lonely without me." He said, circling his thumb around my hips as he nuzzled me. "I'm not alone. I have the Holy Spirit." I reminded him."That's my baby.""See you later." I bade, taking a step back but he pulled me back to him. "One last kiss." He whined, when I resisted his embrace."Zach you're going to be late."He seemed apologetic when he said, "I don't wanna leave you.""I don't want you to go either." I admitted. I was craving his company a lot more than usual but this meeting was important, he couldn't miss it for anything. And from the look of things, he was going to be away for the whole day. Board meetings..."But I have to." "I know..." I sighed resignedly. "I love you." I stood on my toes, to give h
"Why do you want me to shut it down?""You haven't been there in months. What's the point of keeping it running when you're not going back there anytime soon?"I narrowed my eyes at him, shocked that someone of his status and caliber would utter such gibberish when it came to business."Oh is that so? Lemme ask you something,"Raising his chin, he gestured for me to go ahead, "I'm all ears." "You have chains of businesses. Are you always there to check on them?""No. That's why I have capable hands who do the job for me.""There's your answer.""Hannah these are just small businesses.""No business started huge Zach. Just say that you don't want me to go to Atlanta because of Simon instead of spewing some nonsense about my businesses." I stated. His reason was way too obvious and there was no need for him to beat about the bush when he could just air his reservations. He sighed in defeat. "Fine. I'm sorry if I came off as condescending or underestimating your business. You've worked
"Wait, you were actually serious about this?" I laughed so hard when he walked with his phone and connected it to the TV he had purposely installed in our room for this reason. "Of course. No man wants to let his seed go to waste just like that." "Zach..." I shook my head, chuckling a bit as I wondered what I had gotten myself into. "Okay. You ready?" He asked when he had finish setting up. I nodded in response, sitting up to properly observe what he had displayed on the screen. "Good evening ma'am," He said with a slight bow. I bit back a laugh as he started his presentation, so serious like this was million-dollar deal he was pitching for. "The first reason I'd like to show you as to why we should have more babies is," He swiped the screen of his phone and I watched as the picture on the TV switched to a different one. "The bible says we should go into the world and multiply, this we can see in the book of Genesis." I opened my mouth to speak, ready to debate his words when he
"What's wrong?" He asked as I woke up with a start. "I had this crazy nightmare." I managed to say after steadying my breathing. "What happened?" "I, I, I don't know how to explain it but this is more than some bad dream and I know it. I think we should pray more now, it seems like there's attack coming for our marriage. That's all I can say." "I got you on that. Should we pray now or...?" I nodded quickly, "Of course, we can't delay." He got out of bed and helped me up as we began to commune. It was fervent and the more we prayed, the more I saw visual examples of the trial that was on the way. It took a lot to not stumble back in trepidation but the realization that our God is bigger kept us strong and steady. It was nearly three in the morning when we came to a pause and as we laid next to each other, I decided to tell Him all I saw while we prayed. "Someone doesn't want us to be together Zach. Someone we both know very closely." "Your mom?" I shook my head. No it's not he
"I met her over a decade ago, in my early twenties. She was beautiful but unfortunately my best friend's younger sister and you know how messy that can get." "Hex didn't approve?" "He didn't. We had to keep things hush-hush until he walked in on us one day. It's safe to say that it was not an easy day. I came out with a fractured nose." She laughed and went on check my nose for any sign of crookedness. "You're not very nice." I said, making her melodious laugh even louder. She managed to stop after a while "Sorry. So what happened after that?"I continued, taking up her feet so I could give them a massage. "Carrie intervened and we made up but like every protective older he still gave me a side eye any time he saw us together." "I can imagine," She snickered. "When she found out about what I did on the side with her brother, she almost left me. Maybe I should have let her, she would have still been alive by now but I loved her so much, I was so selfish and I wanted to ea
