He kissed her lips gently and stood back to look at her. "I'll see you there". He said and left. She wiped her lips in disgust. She sat in the drawing room and waited for the carriage to arrive. Condolence calls had completely worn her out. Yet, she had to attend the funeral at last. Most women looked at her with pity. A young woman alone in society without a husband. She was probably the talk of the town. Aurora Radcliffe, only child of an Earl was doomed to being the subject of gossip. When her father's friends came to call on her, they usually brought their sons along, in the hope that it would be love at first sight. Her father had always warned her about being such a snob, but she couldn't help it. It was a part of her. She knew she was a prize and she delighted in how men fell over their faces just to get her attention. It was actually funny, and she would have laughed it out if she weren't the one constantly being pestered. They made such vain conversation with her like she was supposed to be an airhead. Her butler walked into the room. He was bearing a sealed letter. "Read it, please". She urged. He cleared his throat and began. Dear Lady Radcliffe, The demise of your father was a great loss to us. On that note, we decided to host a ball in his honour. Humbly oblige our invitation. Do not come alone. We urge you to bring a plus one. Lady Whitall. "Is that all?" She asked her butler. He nodded and folded the letter. "Do you need me to send out any letters for you?" He asked. "What for?" She asked in utter confusion. "I only thought that you would want to invite a plus one". She rolled her eyes sophisticatedly. "Whitall wants to see me married. They all fear that I would lock myself alone in this house and become a spinster." "So, have you decided?" He humbly asked. "No". She said. After a moment, she asked. "Is the carriage here yet?" "Yes. Vulcan is waiting outside". He said. "Change your clothes, you are coming with me". She said. He seemed surprised that she would ask him to attend her father's funeral with her. "Stop standing there hanging your mouth like that Andrew. You were dear to my father, I am certain that he would want you to attend. You were like the son he never had, so for once, be a guest, not a servant". She said, dismissing him. "But... I don't have anything appropriate to wear. I would rather not attend". "Nonsense! My father was a slender man, just an inch or so shorter than you. There should be some clothes there you could try". He looked utterly shocked. "Lady Radcliffe, I could not possibly do that. Who ever heard of a servant wearing his master's clothes?" "I just said that today, you should forget that you're a servant. Carry your head up. And please, for today, I want you to call me Aurora". He nodded and left. She waited for him in the garden. Mrs. Poutin and Abigail kept whispering themselves. She was wondering what they were talking about and turned around. Then, she saw Andrew. He looked so handsome and regal in her father's clothes. He had combed his hair nicely. He was dressed in all black, like she was. How had she never noticed how handsome he was? He walked towards her. She noticed that he still refused to meet her gaze. "You look wonderful, Andrew. If you keep staring at the floor when I am speaking or when anyone else is speaking to you today, I would cut your wages for the month". She said and walked to the carriage. He assisted her and entered after her. As the carriage moved, she noticed that he kept looking back at the Estate. He was constantly rubbing his hands together and puffing his cheeks. She felt pity for him. He was going to a place filled with sophisticated Sharks and Dogs. "Make small talk". She said. His eyes darted up and met her gaze. That was the first time that ever happened. His eyes were pale green. "I should make small talk, Lady Radcliffe?" "Yes. Aurora, remember?" She reminded him. "What should I talk about?" He asked, clearly nervous. " You could talk about the fair weather, sports, the court, the latest fashion, food, yourself, anything, that could of relevant to the person you are talking to". She said. "The weather is fair indeed". He said looking up. "Is that all. It is normally considered rude when you are in the presence of someone and do not try to initiate any conversation". He was silent for a while. "If I may speak my mind, Aurora". He said, startling both of them when he called her name. She liked the way he called her name. He sounded like he was testing it out, like he wanted to know how it would sound on his lips. "So you do not call me by my christian name behind my back?" She asked. "No. Never". She believed him. "Do not mind my interruption. Speak your mind as you wanted to". "Thank you. Instead of making vain conversation, may I ask you what I am to say when people ask who I am?" "Of course. Tell them that you are visiting from London". "But most of them have already met me. I have served your father for five years now". "People never remember the faces of servants. You can be rest assured". She said. "What if some do?" "Then, throw them off. Tell them that they might have met you at a ball in London or something". "Why can I not say that I am your butler". "Because, everyone there takes pleasure in belittling a nobody. They will make you feel like you don't belong, like you are inferior". "You sound like it has happened to you". He said. "It happens to me. But, they are the ones that are nobodys. Just carry your head up, it lets them see that you are immune to their ridicule." The carriage pulled up at the entrance. It was show time. He came down first and helped her down. All eyes were on them.Alexander, Francisco and Victor were seated in a Alexander’s study. The three men looked so fresh one would not know they had just gone through a stressful period these past days.“What would you do now?” Alexander asked Francisco.“Well, something I should have done long ago. Probably put people to oversee some things so I can live the life I always wanted.”“What life if I may ask?” Alexander seemed curious.“Explore.” Francisco replied “I always wanted to travel round the world, go wine tasting, try new food, stuff like that. I actually have a bucket list”“No troubles?” Victor asked.“Not at all. No troubles.” Francisco responded, smiling.“Anyway, I would do the same if I was in your shoes” Victor said as he lifted his bottle of beer to his lip.“Maybe you can be” Francisco teased“How?” Victor seemed interested.“A change of name would do.” Francisco suggested.Victor turned to Alexander with raised brows like he was seeking validation.“Feel free. You are of no use to me…” Alexa
Kristine woke up feeling weak and having blurred vision. She laid back and shut her eyes for some time in an attempt to correct her vision. It turned out she had to stay that way much longer as it was a side effect from the medication she was given, unknown to her. As it wore off, she regained her sight and noticed she was in her room. She turned to her side and saw Camille bundled up in a chair just by her bed.She sat up at the side of her bed and stared at her friend who was fast asleep. Camille was probably exhausted from the stress of the recent event, so Kristine thought.Kristine could not recall how she ended up at home. The last thing she remembered was getting into the vehicle with Alexander and Victor. “Camille?”Camille did not respond. She was still fast asleep.Kristine exhaled. “Camille?” this time she was louder.Camille jerked and came awake. “You are up.” She said, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hands.“Yeah.” Kristine smiled as Camille rushed to hug her.“How
Octavio ignored all the road signs as he drove furiously back to home, he did not even care about the cops who trailed him for over speeding although they turned back after they recognized his vehicle. He had just escaped with his life from a dangerous place and he needed his wrist tended to as soon as possible. It felt like his vein was severed as the bleeding was yet to stop even though he had strapped it with a piece of clothing.Octavio got to the gate and honked before it was opened. He did not even spend a second to curse at the men stationed there like he usually did whenever they made him wait as even for a second. He stopped in front of the house and hurriedly came off, strode straight to his bedroom without minding anyone or saying a word.Octavio quickly opened his safe and began taking out large wads of cash, his gun and a few passports. He stuffed everything in a little bag and made for his office where he took out his first aid kit and started tending to his wrist. When
“I love the nerves.” Octavio said at the top of his voice “You know, coming here like this.”Alexander approached him, hands in the air in a surrender pose and in one of his hands, he held a briefcase which supposedly contained the documents Octavio requested.Alexander stopped a few meters from Octavio. He knew the place was surrounded as he had seen a few men in strategic positions as he came in.“I presume my stuff are in that briefcase?”Alexander couldn’t place exactly, Octavio’s mood. If it was excitement or anxiety, he could not tell. “Its all in here.” He brought down his hands and tapped on the briefcase. “now where is she?”“Don’t be in a hurry yet. How am I to believe that briefcase holds exactly what I requested?” Octavio asked.“Mistrust.” Alexander noted.Octavio smiled “can’t help it” he opened his hands like he wanted to give a hug “I experienced it right here on this spot.”“And he was right not to trust you if my memory serves me right.” Alexander replied.“Yeah that’
“It feels weird you know, this request of his” Camille said as she bit into an apple she took out of the bowl on Alexander’s study table.“I feel same way about it like you do, but it’s a window we have to take. Especially with what is at stake.” Victor said.“You don’t get it.” Camille said “Why would he risk leaving the safety of his house, to come get something he obviously can’t keep?”Victor frowned at Camille’s question. It was one worth consideration because Octavio was a self conscious person who will never venture into anything that would put his life at risk. Moreover, it was the same warehouse location he set Octavio on his heels so he had serious doubts Octavio would show up except he had the place rigged. “Now I think about it, this is a bad idea.” Victor said.“A bad idea?” Francisco asked “which?”“This whole exchange thing with Octavio.” Victor answered.“We are moving on with it.” Francisco turned towards Alexander “yes?” he had this expectant look on his face.Alexand
“Someone get me Jeff immediately!” Octavio yelled at his men, who were obviously clueless as to where Jeff was. They knew his place in the city and have been there a number of times already, but he was not yet home. His neighbors last saw him three days ago, the same day Octavio saw him last.It was quite difficult for them to make any conclusion because none of them was aware of the cabin's existence. It used to be his refuge when things were a little bit clumsy, but now it was his grave. While he was still at it, the gate opened and a police vehicle drove in. It was Captain Harry’s vehicle. Octavio already had a number of encounters with him and so he could recognize him or his vehicle once within distance. The vehicle came to a stop and Captain Harry stepped out, along with two men who were casually dressed with police jackets.“To what do I owe this unpleasant visit?” Octavio meant to sound rude. Although he was right by addressing the visit as unpleasant because he had never up t
