I was tired, really tired. My trip has drained me so much, I just wanted to sleep and not do anything else. But of course I had to be in the office because it was necessary.
I had been working for a few hours when a knock came through. I scowled. I had specifically told my secretary to not let anyone disturb me."Come in!" I said and with curious eyes I watched the door to see whoever was behind it.To my greatest surprise, it was Hannah. Wait, Hannah? I got on my feet in reflex. She had never been here before so there had to be something wrong."Hi." She waved, giving me a blank stare."What are you doing here?""I have something to discuss with you." She barely spared me a glance as she said so. Something had to be really wrong at this point.I offered her a seat and went over to sit down on mine, eagerly awaiting her words despite having an expressionless face on."Here," she stretched a folder over to me. "I need you to sign these.""What are these?" I slowly took the folder and opened it."Divorce papers.""What made you change your mind?" As far as I knew, she wanted this marriage to work at all costs so what suddenly changed the narrative?"Facts." Came her clipped reply.I was more than happy than she wanted to end this sham of a marriage and though I'd miss our time together, it would do us both good to go our separate ways.I opened the folder and brought out the pile of papers, grabbing my pen to do the needful. Just as I flipped through the first page, something stood out. It looked like an ultrasound. I picked it up reluctantly and examined it."That isn't supposed to be in there!" She exclaimed, trying it to grab it from me. I didn't let her have it.She shut her eyes and groaned, "Marv...""What is this?" I asked."It's nothing. Just forget it." She shook her head and tried to take it out of my hand. I glanced at it again."Wait a minute. Hannah are you pregnant?" I asked with wide eyes. She did not respond for several seconds. "Yes I am." She eventually replied.I licked my suddenly chapped lips, “Is it mine?"She scoffed and glared furiously at me. "Oh you think of me as some whore now because I let you touch me whenever you want?""What? That's not what I meant, I just-"She raised her palm, "Save it, Zachary." Letting out a sigh of resignation, she said, “Yes I'm pregnant, the child is yours and I want a divorce.""Why?!" I found myself yelling expressing a lot more emotion than I had intended."Well, because this marriage is an absolute waste of time. I can't continue like this and I want the best for my child.""Our child." I emphatically stated."Sign those papers Zachary." She gritted out."Would you have told me?" I questioned her, looking straight into her eyes."Maybe." She didn’t blink."I need a direct answer, Hannah."She huffed, "Maybe I would, maybe I wouldn't have. Can you just sign those papers so I can get on with my life?""No." I closed the document and put in back in its folder. "I'm not letting you leave with my child. I have a responsibility-" She cut my sentence short once again with an eye roll, "Don't be so dramatic. Now you want to act like the hero? Now you realize you have a responsibility towards me?" She shook her head in disbelief. “Just a minute ago, you were so excited to be free from me after getting all you wanted. Someone to warm your bed after a long day." She forced a chuckle.Letting out a sigh, she gave me a pointed look before ending her speech, "Now because I'm pregnant you still don't want to let me be happy.""Hannah think about our families." I said in a plea."Our families?! Did you think about them when you ignored me for more than half a year since you married me? Did you?!”She had me stunned to silence. The way guilt seeped into my veins after that outburst was unlike something I had ever imagined. She released a breath before staring back at me again, "Just sign those papers so we can all be happy." With that, she walked out of the office without sparing me another glance.~~~"You did what?!" I yelled into the phone. I was beyond furious. I felt betrayed."Man I thought you were cool with it?" He said, sounding confused."She's pregnant, did you know that?" I asked him."I had no idea." He denied."You went ahead and drafted those papers without consulting me." I accused him again."I thought you didn't want to be married to her.""It's complicated." I sighed."Because she's pregnant?""Yes!" My exasperation got the better of me. I know, I'm a jerk. I didn't treat her right for so long and now that she wants to leave, I can't let her be happy. It's not that at all."I'm just wondering why you'll screw someone you claimed to not be interested in." He sounded amused."James, I don't want a repeat of what happened. I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if it happens again." I said, sure that understood what I meant."You still haven't forgiven yourself for that and that's why you're about to lose this one." James always had a way of telling me hurtful truths.I ran my hand over my face. "Dude, you're the professional here. Can't you convince her otherwise? I don't want this.""I'll try my best but no promises." He said."Thank you!" I sighed in gratitude. It was something to hold on to at least."But as your best friend, I'll advise you. You better fix this mess and be a better man for her." He practically scolded me.I scowled, "What are you talking about? This is about the baby.""So you say." I could feel his smirk from the other side of the line."Get off my phone man." I hung up before he could annoy me further. For some reason, James nursed this silly notion that Hannah and I had great chemistry and that we would be a great couple if I wasn't so stubborn. That was his opinion not mine. For me, I just wanted my child safe and sound. That was all that mattered at this point. It was the weekend and I was taking a walk outside the mansion. The nausea was getting to me really and I needed some air to help dampen it. I waved at Louis as he wiped the cars clean of the morning dew that had settled on them. Shockingly, Zachary's favorite car was one of them. I was surprised that he was even in but of course I had been avoiding him ever since..I had been speaking to James who had been trying to convince me to not go through with the divorce for now because if Zachary did not want to sign, we would have to go to court and the whole back and forth, according to him, would be too stressful for me in my condition. I laughed at all of that.Screw me for picking Zachary's best friend as my divorce lawyer. "Madam!" I turned as Louis called out to me. "Miss Malia said to call you in for breakfast." He said."I'll be there in a minute. Thank you." I said to him before he turned to leave. With one last breath of fresh air, I turned back around to head into the house.Z
"Why?" I groaned, "What do you mean why? Your mom is in the guest room downstairs.""Can you repeat that last sentence?" She innocently asked.I was confused but I repeated it anyway. "Your mom is in the guest room downstairs?""Exactly." She made to walk away.I held her arm, "Where are you going?""Back to my room, duh?" She removed her arm from my grip hurriedly."I thought we had a deal." I said."We did. We have to pretend in front of my mom and she's not coming upstairs anytime soon so I do not have to share a room with you." She responded."What are you running away from?" I smirked."Running away? We've had separate rooms since forever Zachary." She scoffed.I shut my eyes. Though I didn't want to admit it, I liked it when she called my whole name in a somewhat deep and sarcastic tone."You know I like it when you call my name like that." I reached for her tiny waist."We're pretending to be in love so don't get any funny ideas while we're at it." She warned, taking a few ste
I was so mad. Who the hell did Zachary think he was to throw his instructions in my face? Yes, he saved my father's company but who was he to try and stop me from building my father's legacy? I paced the room several times, venting in my thoughts."Maybe getting pregnant on purpose was a mistake." I said aloud."Don't say that! A child is a blessing." Marv exclaimed."I know Marv but I think I'm about to have a child for the wrong man." I sulked."Told you so." She muttered. My eyes snapped up to the screen. "Really Marv?" I frowned."You know I'll always tell you the truth. This man does not deserve you." She shrugged.I let out a long sigh. She was absolutely right. What the heck was I thinking in the first place? "Well why didn't you stop me from going through with this?" I accused cause I needed someone to blame for my silliness."Like you ever listen to me." She rolled her eyes with a scoff."I wish I did." I sulked once again. I wasn't ready for any of this. Not ready to be a
"Can you believe that?!" I exclaimed. James was having the best laugh while I was utterly frustrated because of the woman I married. "Well I think it's a very smart move from her end because why not?" He chuckled."You have got to be kidding me." I took a quick sip from my glass, glancing at him through from the corner of my eye."It's not like you can't afford it." He reasoned out."Of course I can but isn't that too much for a woman to ask? I'm still her husband." I mean who asks for such an outrageous amount of money to carry her husband's child?"You treat her like a baby mama, so she's simply returning the energy." He shrugged casually."You always take Hannah's side." I accused him."You've been a jerk and I'm a feminist." And he admitted to it. Asshole!"I can't love her man, this is the best I can do for her." I said. "So why are you complaining?" He asked me."I'm not complaining. I'm just saying she doesn't seem to, you know," I sighed, trying come up with the right words t
"Breakfast in bed?" I must be dreaming." I came out of the bathroom and saw him setting the food tray on the bed."You're not." He grinned."Is this a reward or something?" I grabbed a toast and bit into it."Why would you think so?"I shrugged. "Doesn't seem like you ever so anything without a profit. Typical business man." I tilted the cup of hot chocolate in a mocking cheer towards him before bringing it to my lips."What if I can prove that I can be more to you?" His question had me startled me for a second."There's no point. I like where we're at." I wasn't sure about that but I didn't want to give myself false hopes about where our relationship would go."You sure about that?" He smirked. The same annoying smirk I always wanted to wipe off with a corresponding smack."We have great chemistry in the bedroom, yes. But there's never going to be anything more to us. You said that. Stop trying to mess with my head." I got agitated in that instant. He was quiet for a few seconds and
I paced the lobby back and forth for several painstaking minutes. The doctor was yet to come out and tell me anything and I was almost going crazy at the thought of anything happening to Hannah."Zach?"I looked up from my pacing feet and saw my parents as well Hannah's mom, hurrying to towards me with worried looks on their faces. "What happened?!""Is she alright?""What did the doctor say?"They threw questions at me one after the other and I was too overwhelmed to speak. "I came back from the party and met her laying unconscious on our bedroom floor." I explained."Weren't you supposed to attend together?""We had a fight so I didn't let her come with me." I quietly said, unable to meet her mother's eyes."What do you mean you didn't let her come with you?" Her eyes has gone wide with rapidly increasing rage. "Did you lock her in?" I kept mute. She grabbed me by the collar, "Did you lock her in?! Answer me Zachary!""Ria calm down." Dad tried to take her hands off me but her gri
"Hello, Mr and Mrs Hawkins." "Hello doc," Zachary shook hands with the young man who was going to see to the conducting of the ultrasound."Everything alright, Mrs Hawkins?" I nodded. "Yes, just a little aches here and there." I said. He assured me I would be fine, I just needed to rest."Please lay down." He said.I did as I was told and waited until the cool gel was applied on my abdomen. I felt Zachary's strong palm hold on to mine. Hearing my child's heartbeat for the first time brought tears to my eyes. I blinked back the tears that stung at my eyeballs furiously. Zach gave my hand a squeeze and pressed his lips to my forehead."From the look of things, your baby's pretty healthy. You just have to control your stress levels. Another dangerous spike in your blood pressure could cause a miscarriage." The doctor informed us.The thought of losing my baby, scared me to no end, I couldn't even respond when the doctor spoke. Zachary spoke on my behalf while I just laid there wonderin
My back ached so bad, I had been asleep ever since we arrived late into the night. I sleepily found my way to the bathroom to do my business and when I came out, I overheard hushed arguments."Why didn't you tell me you were coming with her?""So that you'd look for an excuse to leave the house for some work trip?""You could have at least given me a heads-up." Zara sulked. "How long is she staying for?""How's that any of your business?" I stepped out of my hiding spot to face her squarely."I'm asking because you need to go back to your billionaire husband." She retorted with a sneer."Why are you so pained?" It was childish how she exhibited such obvious jealousy."Excuse me?""You have been such a bitch ever since you found out I was going to be married to Zach instead of you." I told her. I'm older, of course I was going to marry him instead of my clueless little sister who wanted nothing to do with the family business until our father's unfortunate demise."So you're saying I'm j

Months had rolled by and that chilly Sunday morning while basking in the warmth of worship, her water broke. It was about time, she had been waiting long enough even more anxiously cause they wanted to keep the baby's gender a surprise. The last gender reveal didn't end so well anyways. "How are we doing?" The nurse on duty that had come to be her fave asked when she walked in with Zach who had been frantic ever since she told him it was time. "Great! I guess," She shrugged. "You're sure?" "I'm not in a lot of pain so I don't even know if I can say I'm in labour." She chuckled nervously. Hannah had read about how excruciating labour pains were and now she that she wasn't feeling so much, she didn't know how to feel about it/ "I guess you're one of the lucky ones." The doctor piped up. "Blessed is the word doc." She corrected with a smile. "Babe are you sure you're not just enduring the pain." Zach worriedly asked. "I'm sure! I feel little aches here and there but they're not as
"Zach what are you doing here?" Marv asked in shock. He ignored her and rushed towards me, "Babe.""Stand back!" She screamed manically, startling all of us."Don't move any closer or I'll blow her brains out." She pointed the gun straight at my forehead. With his hands raised in surrender, Zach stepped back a few paces. "Marv just let her go. You don't have to do this.""It wouldn't have come to this if you had just done the right thing." She said through gritted teeth, not at all shifting the gun from the targeted spot on my forehead. I gulped."What do you mean?" He asked."Can't you see Zachary? I've loved you for so long and all you've ever done is have eyes for someone else. Anyone but me, I'm sick of it!""And this bitch," she shoved my head with the gun, "She always escapes every death trap I plot for her. I was so mad when I find out you weren't in when I set that apartment on fire,"I gasped. Just how far would this woman go to end me? Lord have mercy."You did what?" Zach
I had been awake, thankful they did not knock me unconscious. I didn't know who my abductor was and I was eager to see if it was whom I thought it was. I waited, tied up in a dimly lit room, somehow not terrified of whatever or whomever it was that was going to walk through that door. "I put my faith in Jesus, he never let me down. Faithful through generations, so why would make he fail now? He won't." I sang lowly, rocking myself as gently as I could on the steely seat. "HE won't fail... He won't." "Impressive voice." I chuckled. "Just as I thought," I said, smiling at her. "Hello Marv." "Hello Hannah." She returned my greeting with a smile splaying on her deep red lips. "So you had to resort to this...?" I looked around the ill-fated room once again finally able to express my irritation not because of the scrawny place but the person who had me locked up in here. She shrugged. "Yes I had to resort to this. You refused to stop getting in the way." Tilting my head, I asked,
"You'll be fine without me yeah?" He asked for the umpteenth time.I gave him a nod. "Yeah."He pulled me into another embrace. "Promise?""I'm fine. Just a little nauseous but I'm fine." I assured him once again."I just hope I can be back early enough so you wouldn't be lonely without me." He said, circling his thumb around my hips as he nuzzled me. "I'm not alone. I have the Holy Spirit." I reminded him."That's my baby.""See you later." I bade, taking a step back but he pulled me back to him. "One last kiss." He whined, when I resisted his embrace."Zach you're going to be late."He seemed apologetic when he said, "I don't wanna leave you.""I don't want you to go either." I admitted. I was craving his company a lot more than usual but this meeting was important, he couldn't miss it for anything. And from the look of things, he was going to be away for the whole day. Board meetings..."But I have to." "I know..." I sighed resignedly. "I love you." I stood on my toes, to give h
"Why do you want me to shut it down?""You haven't been there in months. What's the point of keeping it running when you're not going back there anytime soon?"I narrowed my eyes at him, shocked that someone of his status and caliber would utter such gibberish when it came to business."Oh is that so? Lemme ask you something,"Raising his chin, he gestured for me to go ahead, "I'm all ears." "You have chains of businesses. Are you always there to check on them?""No. That's why I have capable hands who do the job for me.""There's your answer.""Hannah these are just small businesses.""No business started huge Zach. Just say that you don't want me to go to Atlanta because of Simon instead of spewing some nonsense about my businesses." I stated. His reason was way too obvious and there was no need for him to beat about the bush when he could just air his reservations. He sighed in defeat. "Fine. I'm sorry if I came off as condescending or underestimating your business. You've worked
"Wait, you were actually serious about this?" I laughed so hard when he walked with his phone and connected it to the TV he had purposely installed in our room for this reason. "Of course. No man wants to let his seed go to waste just like that." "Zach..." I shook my head, chuckling a bit as I wondered what I had gotten myself into. "Okay. You ready?" He asked when he had finish setting up. I nodded in response, sitting up to properly observe what he had displayed on the screen. "Good evening ma'am," He said with a slight bow. I bit back a laugh as he started his presentation, so serious like this was million-dollar deal he was pitching for. "The first reason I'd like to show you as to why we should have more babies is," He swiped the screen of his phone and I watched as the picture on the TV switched to a different one. "The bible says we should go into the world and multiply, this we can see in the book of Genesis." I opened my mouth to speak, ready to debate his words when he
"What's wrong?" He asked as I woke up with a start. "I had this crazy nightmare." I managed to say after steadying my breathing. "What happened?" "I, I, I don't know how to explain it but this is more than some bad dream and I know it. I think we should pray more now, it seems like there's attack coming for our marriage. That's all I can say." "I got you on that. Should we pray now or...?" I nodded quickly, "Of course, we can't delay." He got out of bed and helped me up as we began to commune. It was fervent and the more we prayed, the more I saw visual examples of the trial that was on the way. It took a lot to not stumble back in trepidation but the realization that our God is bigger kept us strong and steady. It was nearly three in the morning when we came to a pause and as we laid next to each other, I decided to tell Him all I saw while we prayed. "Someone doesn't want us to be together Zach. Someone we both know very closely." "Your mom?" I shook my head. No it's not he
"I met her over a decade ago, in my early twenties. She was beautiful but unfortunately my best friend's younger sister and you know how messy that can get." "Hex didn't approve?" "He didn't. We had to keep things hush-hush until he walked in on us one day. It's safe to say that it was not an easy day. I came out with a fractured nose." She laughed and went on check my nose for any sign of crookedness. "You're not very nice." I said, making her melodious laugh even louder. She managed to stop after a while "Sorry. So what happened after that?"I continued, taking up her feet so I could give them a massage. "Carrie intervened and we made up but like every protective older he still gave me a side eye any time he saw us together." "I can imagine," She snickered. "When she found out about what I did on the side with her brother, she almost left me. Maybe I should have let her, she would have still been alive by now but I loved her so much, I was so selfish and I wanted to ea
