Emelia's Pov “Arghhh!” I screamed, pain shooting through my spine as hot iron burned through the skin on my face. It hurts! It hurts so much! I was thrown to the floor, my chin hitting the hard concrete floor. Scrambling backwards, I clawed at my face, feeling the melting flesh drip down my chin. “Hahahaha!” Nora, my younger sister laughed, her voice echoing in the dark room, her amusement piercing through the thick air like a blade. "You look hideous now, dear sister." She mocked, twirling the branding iron in her hand. The tip still sizzled, glowing a furious red from the heat, "But don't worry, it's not like you had much to lose." Tears blurred my vision, the sharp sting of burnt flesh sending fresh waves of agony through my nerves. I gasped for air, my body trembling violently as I forced myself to crawl backward. "N-Nora… please…" I choked, my voice barely a whisper. She sighed, tilting her head as if bored. "I was hoping you'd put up more of a fight.” She mused, crouching beside me. Her fingers gripped my chin, forcing me to look up at her, "Where’s that fire you always had, Emelia? Where’s that little spark of defiance? You know I never liked you, Emelia so why did you try to cover what wasn't yours? Why did you always try to get in my way? Why did you even have to stay in the mansion! You should have refused to become a RedField! Why were you always so greedy?!” Nora's voice rose the more she spoke and with my one good eye, I stared at her in shock. “I was greedy?” I let out a choked laugh, my broken ribs protesting the movement. Greedy? That’s what she thought of me? I could barely hold myself upright, my hands trembling as I pushed against the floor, but I still managed to look up at her. "You call me greedy." I rasped, my voice hoarse from the pain. "But who was the one who took everything from me? Who lied? Who betrayed me? I only wanted to be recognised by my real parents! How was I greedy?!” Nora’s smile vanished. Her grip on the branding iron tightened. "You should have never been here." She hissed, "You should have never been born! You should have just stayed in that poor orphanage! How dare you try to take what's mine, huh?!" And with that, she slammed the iron against my shoulder. A fresh wave of agony ripped through me. My body convulsed, the scream torn from my throat as my skin burned, the scent of scorched flesh making me nauseous. Nora watched me writhe with cold satisfaction before finally stepping back, dropping the iron with a loud clang. "By the time I am done with you, Emelia. The world won’t even remember you existed." She turned to the guards, "Lock the door. Make sure no one goes in or out.” "You… will regret this…" I rasped. For a moment, something dark flashed in her eyes. But then she grinned. "Regret?" she echoed, her thumb pressing against the raw, burned skin of my cheek. I bit my lip so hard I tasted blood, "No, sister. The only one full of regret… is you." She shoved me back, standing to her full height. I collapsed onto the cold ground, my chest rising and falling rapidly. Everything hurts. My body was battered, my face burning, my limbs too weak to even move. Her words echoed in my brain, “The only one full of regrets is you.” Right… That was right… I was the one who was full of regrets. She was right. I should have known my place, I never should have tried to ask for love from my real parents. I never should have tried to fit in with the people I called my family. I should have not been so naive to the extent that I believed they would treat me better than where I used to be. A bitter chuckle escaped my lips. Why was I so stupid? But then, a knock came from outside, it was so soft I almost thought I imagined it. I forced my eyes open, my heart shaking. "Miss Emelia…" A whisper came. I tried to move, to lift my head, but my body was sluggish, unresponsive. The window creaked open. A small figure crawled inside. I blinked, “Lena?” What was she doing here? She was trembling, her face pale, but her eyes were filled with urgency, "Miss Emelia, I came to help you but we have to go before Nora comes back." She whispered desperately. I wanted to speak. To ask why she was here, why she was risking her life for me. But I couldn’t. Lena didn’t wait. She grabbed my arm, looping it around her small shoulders, and pulled. "Come on.” She urged, "Please…" With every ounce of strength left in me, I moved. Together, we stumbled toward the window. However, we had barely made it outside when a voice cut through the night. "Going somewhere?" It was Nora. She stood in the dim moonlight, arms crossed, her lips curling into a slow, wicked smile. "You really never learn, do you, Emelia?" she sighed, shaking her head. Lena froze. Before I could react, Nora's guards grabbed her. "NO!" I screamed, reaching for her. Lena thrashed, kicking wildly, but she was no match for them. One of the guards yanked her arm and then… CRACK. A bloodcurdling scream tore from Lena’s throat. My stomach dropped as I stared at her in horror. Her hand… They had broken her hand. Tears streaked her pale face, her tiny frame shaking from pain. But through her sobs, she looked at me. "Run." She whimpered. I couldn’t leave her. I couldn't. She helped me. She had helped me! "GO!" she screamed. "Miss Emelia, please! RUN!" “No… I can't… I can't leave you…” “Miss Emelia, go, alright? I wanted to repay you for how you helped me back then and I finally had the chance to do that. I don't regret anything and neither should you. It wasn't wrong for you to ask for love. It wasn't. So please go, GO! RUN!” My heart shattered. But I ran. I forced my battered legs forward, sprinting toward the street. The cold night air whipped against my face, every step sending fresh agony through my body. Behind me, I heard Nora’s furious voice. "Don’t let her escape!" Footsteps thundered after me. I pushed harder, lungs burning, vision blurring. The streetlights ahead flickered, the sound of car engines roaring in my ears. I was almost there. I had almost escaped but then, I saw headlights and it shone into my eyes, I raised my hands to cover my sensitive eyes from the light. However, I couldn't react quickly. My body was hit by the car and I flew back, my body hitting the pavement with a painful thud, my spine cracking. It was cold. It was really cold. I could feel life slipping away from me. Through my blurry eyes, I saw Ethan, my fiancé, come out from the car that had hit me. I could hear screams and shouts. Ethan and Nora stepped closer to me, he held her by the waist, comforting her as she cried. There was no emotion on his face. I gasped, wanting to say something, but blood had filled my throat and the world was spinning. I knew I was going to die. But I didn't want to die. I didn't want to die. I want to live. So please… if someone was out there. If they felt pity for me… give me a second chance. I won't ask for love anymore, I won't want a family anymore. So please, give me a second chance to right my wrongs! Please!Chapter 12 Emelia's Pov “I never said that.” I replied coolly, “But I do know how to fight dirty even with books.”“Classmate, I thought you said you didn't like fighting.” Nathan butted in, teasing. “Who? Me? If I ever said that, I hope you ignore it. Our beloved teacher's salary and reputation is on the line so it's up to us to defend him.” Teacher Mike was one of the few people who defended me in my past life, until I finished… Dropped out from school, he had always been right behind me, even pushing me to succeed. It's such a pity that after all he did for me… He was set up by a student who lied that he raped her and then eventually, he committed suicide. I and almost all the students here had attended his funeral. The only person who wasn't present was Nathan and another classmate, the girl. That's right, she was from this class. However, she's not here right now. A few scattered chuckles broke out, pulling me out from my thoughts. Then Nathan leaned forward, resting his chi
Chapter 11 Emelia's Pov “How about you… repay me with your body?” I smirked, trapping her in between my arms and the walls. “W… what?!” Jasmine practically screamed, her high pitched voice made me wince slightly. But compared to her cute red face, it was nothing. “You… I… I don't like girls!” Jasmine yelled, covering her chest with her arms. The hallway was quiet for a moment, and I stared at her in shock. “You… You don't like…?” I was confused for a moment, I didn't understand what she meant but looking at the position we were in now and what I said, it was easy to arrive at the fact that I was asking her out. I burst into laughter, unable to help myself. The sheer horror on Jasmine’s face, the way her ears had gone red all the way to the tips, she looked like a tomato about to combust.“Relax.” I said between giggles, straightening up and taking a step back, “I was just joking.”Jasmine’s eyes widened even more, if that was possible, and she covered her face with both hands, “
Chapter 10 Emelia's Pov Amelia came in with Jeremy who scowled at me, and this time, his disgust in me was clearly shown, it wasn't hidden like last time. “E… Emelia…” Nora peeked out from behind them, wringing her hands together, “I… I called mom. I heard that you had gotten hurt so…” “The first thing your mother does is to slap an injured person? How stupid can this family get, Nora?” “Shut your mouth and apologise! I sent you here because I thought the environment you were in was the one that contributed to your vile behaviour. I expected you to behave yourself here but you went ahead to cause trouble!” Amelia shouted, her voice sharp and trembling with fury.Amelia turned back to the parents, her voice shifting into something softer, more performative, “I deeply apologize for what my daughter did. I didn’t raise her to be a bully, and I’m truly sorry that your daughters had to experience such violence at her hands.”The room was quiet. The parents exchanged glances, none of t
Chapter 9 Emelia's Pov The sounds of ambulances echoed throughout the school and I stood, cross-armed in the Dean's office, watching as the girls were put into the ambulance on stretchers. Their injuries were not serious but most of them fainted. I don't even know what the fuss is about. Jasmine was beside me, her head lowered. “Emelia RedField.” The Dean started, bringing me out of my thoughts, “Do you know what you did wrong?” He asked, staring at me calmly. I turned to face him, my lips pulling into a polite smile, “I don't really know sir.” His brows furrowed, “You injured students inside the toilet until they have to be hospitalised, and you still say that you don't know what you did wrong?” “Dean, if I didn't defend myself, I would have been the one in that ambulance right now? Or is it that you want me to be there?” I cut in, my voice cold. For a while, no one said anything, then he sighed, “From your records, you were a meek girl in your old school who was well liked b
Chapter 8 Emelia's Pov “Excuse me, Miss Emelia, the Dean is asking for you.” A student from class one came into the class after Mr Mike had finished teaching, he had started packing up his books already. I glanced at the door, staring at the girl who came. Under my gaze, she was a bit jumpy, like she was scared of something. “Why?” I asked, licking my lips. “I… I don't know. He just asked me to send for you, if you go late, he's going to be very angry.” She said without taking a breath, by this time, sweat was dripping off her eyebrows. I smiled, getting up from my seat and walking towards her. She was quite shorter than I was, very petite and cute. Leaning down, I patted her shoulders, “I'm not going to eat you so you don't have to be scared of me.” The girl hiccuped. It seems someone had sent her to call me just like I thought. “You can show me to the Dean's office, I don't know where it is.” “O… Okay.” The girl stiffly replied. We walked along the hallway, she was at the
Chapter 7 Emelia's Pov I walked all the way to where Class 8 was, ignoring the looks that were sent my way. A lot of people had seen the commotion that Liam caused so they knew who I was and there was bound to be small talk. “I heard that she was related to the school beauty, Nora.” “She can't be more than a relative. Nora came to school with bandages around her body, who do you think caused them?” “I heard that the RedFields donated a lot of buildings and money to the school in order for her to attend it.” “She looks so cold.” Cold? I was anything but cold though. Before I knew it, I stood in front of Class Seven doors, and from outside, I could already hear the screams and yells coming from the inside. Taking a deep breath, I opened the doors and walked in. There was already a teacher inside the class who didn't care that his students were making noises while he was teaching, but my entrance drew his attention“Hello teacher.” I greeted, my smile wide, “My name is Emelia, I
Chapter 6 Emelia's Pov Nile Academy. The name of the school I was going to attend from now on was written boldly at the front. Amelia had transferred me over to this school right before I was sent to the mental hospital but I hadn't had the chance to resume yet. In my past life, I also resumed later and towards that time, I was transferred to Class 8, it was for the worst students in school; the misfits, illegitimate children, delinquents, etc. My grandfather had asked my father to donate a few buildings just so I could attend the school when I mentioned it to them. I released a soft groan and mentally preparing myself, I walked into the school, however, it seems like I was cursed to have a bad day because the moment I walked in, I saw Nora, Liam, Jeremy and Amelia standing in the middle of the school compound, their clothes glittering like they came for a model casting. I turned my head around, intending on ignoring them when someone yelled out my name. “Emelia!” Nora called o
Chapter 5 Emelia's Pov “You want to stay with me?” Kaidon murmured, “What would your brother's say if they find out that you, an unmarried woman, is staying with an unmarried man? Don't you think they would get angry?” There was some sort of teasing in his voice. I huffed, “Weren't you the one who said I was yours from now on? Why are you trying to let go of me now? Brother Kai, it's really cold out here, I think I'm going to catch a cold.” I sniffled for extra effect. A long, painful sigh came from the other end, “Get up, don't sit on the ground.” My eyes brightened instantly and I turned my head, “Brother Kai, are you nearby? How do you know I'm sitting on the ground?” I stood up, looking around now. A few seconds later, a car stopped in front of me, it was a black Mustang. Kai stepped out of the passenger's seat along with the driver who silently began packing my stuff into the car trunk. When he was done, as quietly as he came out, he went back into the car. “Come here.” I
Chapter 4 Emelia's Pov “Where have I been? Mom, you must have heard about what happened and your first question is where I have been?” I met her eyes, ignoring the sharp sting on the side of my face. I glanced at Nora who stood behind my brother's, I didn't notice before but she had a bandage around her arm. I couldn't help but scoff. A day before my brother sent me to the mental hospital, Nora had accused me of pushing her down the stairs, but she was actually the one who fell. The nanny of the house could attest to it, however, she didn't like me and was sucking up to Nora, of course she wouldn't say the truth. Due to Nora's words and the nanny's confirmation, they had concluded that I was crazy. “How dare you speak to me like that?! You might have been so uncultured that you dared do anything you wanted in that stinky run down orphanage that you stayed in, but that doesn't mean you can behave like that in this house! You aren't fit to be my daughter!” My mother yelled at me. “
