Regan’s POV

After getting Stonghold pack’s pledge, we visited six more packs that gave similar responses, all pledging to come when we called.

Since each pack we visited insisted we dined with them and even spend the night before continuing our journey, as was customary hospitality among werewolves, I could not turn them down without being disrespectful. Especially since I had come to seek their aid.

This simply meant that our journey took longer than originally planned. I had to write to Nana to tell her that all was well with us after receiving several spelled messages from her and Gaia, all enquiring about our well being.

I knew that Jasmine would be the most worried of everyone back at home. And that was the last thing I wanted, to worry or upset her in any well. It would not be good for both her and our pup.

As we rested in the rooms provided for us by the current pack we were visiting, a knock on my door drew my attention from the map I had been observing.

I immediately knew it was Luke since he had used the familiar knocking pattern we always used.

Rather than reply, I mind linked him to enter and the door opened a moment later to usher him in.

“Nana sent a letter from Jazzie”, he said, walking into the room and shutting the door behind him before handing me the letter in question.

I took it from him eagerly, already catching the familiar scent of her from the letter.

It made Rage growl in longing.

We both missed out mate very much.

Despite how much I longed to rip open the letter and read the words she had taken time to write to me, I knew there was an urgent issue I needed to address with Luke.

So, I put the letter on my bed and turned to face him.

“Tomorrow, we set out for Redclaw pack”, I told him and watched as his face hardened.

“I know”, I said, already knowing what his look meant. “I do not like it anymore than you do”, I told him. “But I fear we have no choice in the matter”, I said.

“Redclaws have no honor”, he said stiffly, his calm voice doing nothing to fool me.

I nodded. “I know”, I said. “But this goes beyond honor”, I told him. “This fight is for the werewolves everywhere”, I said. “We have no other choice in the matter”.

He remained silent, clearly not agreeing to with me.

I sighed hard.

“Redclaw is one of the largest packs in the East”, I reminded him. “We would need their numbers if we wish to have any hope of winning this war”, I said.

He remained silent still.

Luke’s behavior was nothing surprising to me. I had known it would be difficult to convince him that we would need aid from the Redclaw pack. In fact, I had purposely omitted mentioning anything about them until now.

His hatred for the pack was not undeserved.

After all, a member of the pack had been responsible for his older brother’s death.

We did not speak much of it since it had happened years before the Blackmoon massacre, and since we had been quite young then.

Unlike me who was an only child, Luke and Lena had had siblings. Luke had an older brother that had been quite some years older than us.

He was supposed to be the one to inherit the title of Beta from their father by right of birth, even though everyone had known I would choose Luke.

He had been learning under our fathers and had gone with them on a visit to Redclaw pack.

He had not returned alive, and since we were quite young at the time, no one would tell us how he had met his end.

We had simply overheard that he had been killed by a member of Redclaw pack.

That was the reason for Luke’s behavior.

Luke had been very close with his brother and had adored him, so it was no surprise to me that he still held resentment for the pack that was responsible for his brother’s death.

“I know what I am asking is not easy”, I said to him. “But we need this”, I reminded. “So I will need you to put your emotions aside and deal with this wisely”, I advised.

He turned to level a glare on me, and from the look alone, I could tell that I had said something wrong and that I would not like what he was about to say in return.

I was right.

“How simple it must be for you to say that”, he said. “When you yourself would have nothing to do with Blackmoon since they murdered your family”, he said.

Luke knew me too well.

He knew what to say to rile me up, and this time, he had chosen to do just that.

Rage growled at the affront in Luke’s words and I felt my anger start to surface.

I took a deep breath to hold it back before I spoke through clenched teeth.

“It is not the same”, I told him, glaring daggers at him.

He simply held my gaze with one of his own.

“Is it not?” He asked simply, his voice sounding very calm, before he turned and walked out of the room, slamming the door shut behind him.

I was angry at his rudeness.

Despite the fact that he was my best friend, it did not excuse his disrespectful behavior towards me as his Alpha.

But rather than go after him in anger, I took a deep breath, before turning to where my mate’s letter laid on the bed.

I made my way over and sat on the bed, picking up the letter and carefully ripping it open to reveal her familiar writing.

She wrote to me about the happenings in our pack, and as I read as she described the events that had taken place, I felt the anger drain out of me and felt my tense muscles relax.

From her words, it was clear to know that she had finally adjusted into her role as Luna of our pack. She mentioned something that happened with Emry’s sister and said to send word to him from his sister.

Since I had brought Emry along for our journey, I made a mental note to tell him when I saw him next. He was the youngest warrior in my company.

She went ahead to tell me about our pup and I laughed at her descriptions and explanations, almost feeling as though she was right beside me.

She ended by saying how much they all missed me, she most of all and urged me to hastily complete my quest and return home.

As I finished reading the letter, I brought it to my chest to hold it close, wishing I was holding her instead.

I fell back onto the bed, staring at the roof of the room I had been given.

Luke’s emotions and behavior had been understandable.

Better than anyone, I had seen how the death of his brother had affected him, even to the present day.

His father had also been hard on him. Not knowing how to openly mourn the death of his oldest son without being perceived as weak, he had thrown all his expectations and frustration onto young Luke.

Luke had been expected to be like his older brother.

And whenever he had made any mistake, he was punished for it.

No matter how hard I knew he tried, his Father had always found him wanting.

It had been Nana who had protected Luke from the mental and verbal abuses of his father. His mother had been distracted by her grief at the time, and by the time she had realized it, it had been to late.

It was why Luke was always so hard on himself.

Why he worked himself to the bone.

Always trying to be perfect.

It had not helped when our peers had come of age and gotten their wolves and he did not. I remember how he had already convinced himself and accepted that he was a wolfless wolf, even going as far as to refuse being my Beta.

It had taken all of our strengths to help him hold onto hope.

And it had paid off.

Him getting his wolf had been the proof he needed that his Father’s words about him were not true.

The proof that he was good enough.

And I dearly hoped that he always remembered it.

Luke was right.

I would never even entertain the idea of having anything to do with Blackmoon because they murmured my family and my pack members. So why did I expect Luke to agree to the idea of seeking help from those who murmured his brother?

I brought an arm around my face.

I was a hypocrite and a terrible friend.

And thanks to Jasmine’s letter, I had not gone to do anything to make it worse.

I held the letter tighter to my chest and closed my eyes.

I did not know when I drifted off to sleep.

By the next morning, I had paid my respect to the Alpha and Luna of the pack we were visiting at the time, thanking them for their hospitality before making my way out to where my warriors were packing our supplies and readying the horses.

Thankfully, we had not encountered and rogues or rogue attacks on our journey so far.

I walked over to my horse who was being tended to by Emry.

“Good morning, Alpha”, he said on catching sight of me as soon as I approached him.

“Good morning”, I said, patting my horse. “I have a message for you from your sister”, I told him, remembering my mate’s latter the night before.

He looked up at me with wide, worried eyes.

“Is she well?” He asked. “Did something happen to Mother?” He asked almost immediately.

I could not help but smile, lifting up a hand to ruffle his hair.

“All is well”, I told him. “Your mother and sister are fine”, I assured him. “Your sister simply asked that you be told to better return without a scratch or she would not spare you”, I said, smiling as I relayed the message to him.

Slowly, the worry disappeared to be replaced by a wide smile.

“That does sound like something Amy would say”, he said, his adoration for his sister clear to see.

They had a very close bond.

For a moment, I imagined something happening to Emry while he was away. For him to have left home with the promise of return, only for him to never make it back alive. Imagined how heartbroken Amy would be to loose her brother like that.

And that had happened to Luke.

Once again, I felt guilty about how I had casually spoken to Luke about Redclaw the night before.

I had never had any siblings, being an only child.

The closest I had ever had to siblings were Luke and Lena.

I tried to imagine something happening to Luke, or Lena.

Just the thought of it alone was enough to make me go mad. I knew I would have no peace, even after I had exacted revenge on anyone who would dare to harm them, let alone take them from me forever.

I looked around at the warriors gathered in search of Luke, only to see him already making his way over to me.

He came to a stop a small distance from where I stood.

“Emry”, he called to the young werewolf. “Could you help me check my horse as well?” He requested.

Emry, proud to be of use to both his Alpha and Beta, eagerly nodded and left to do as Luke asked.

As soon as he left, I mind linked Luke, not wanting anyone else to hear our conversation.

‘Forgive me’, I said. ‘It was selfish and thoughtless of me to have asked that of you’, I told him. ‘We do not need Redclaw’s assistance to fight this war. You were right, honor is important’.

He was quiet for a while before I heard his voice in my head.

‘No’, he said. ‘I was wrong’, he told me. ‘We do not even know what really happened all those years ago. And I heard Redclaw has a new Alpha who is honorable. I would never forgive myself if my resentment over the past stands in our way of protecting the family we now have’, he said and looked up at me.

“Let us ride to Redclaw together”, he said aloud. “You have my word that I will my best to act wisely”.

At his words, I smiled in gratitude, bringing a hand to place on his shoulder.

“Thank you, My brother”, I said to him.

He smiled in return and gave a nod before turning away to mount his horse.

Jasmine’s POV After my judgment on the mother and daughter who had lied against Amy, I noticed that members of my pack began to treat me differently. And not in a bad way. Lena had ensured that my sentences on the mother and daughter were carried out. More than anyone, she had been proud of how I had handled the case and took great joy in narrating the occurrence in great detail to Nana and Mari, who had been disappointed that they had not been present to witness the even for themselves. Amy and Emry’s mother, who worked closely alongside Nana at the healing house was full of thanks, even going as far as shedding a few tears, to express her gratitude for how I had come to her daughter’s rescue. Regan’s POV It did not take us long to arrive at Redclaw pack once my request to be accepted into the pack was granted. A part of me had thought it would have been rejected and was quite satisfied with that since it meant Luke would be spared the emotional torture the meeting might turn out to be for him. All the same, he rode beside me with a straight face, obviously deep in his thoughts that I did not dare intrude upon. A part of me suddenly wished we had not come with horses. It meant our quest would have been faster in a sense. We could have run in our wolf forms to arrive at the packs we had to visit. However, three concerns had made me decide otherwise. The first was that we had planned to visit several packs, which meant we had to come with a lot of gifts for each pack we visited, hence why we had to bring along two carts. Running in our wolf form meant we would have had to carry all those tributes and gifts and would have left us exhausted very quickly, especi

Jasmine’s POV Since I had no choice in the matter, I took amusement from wherever I could. At the moment, the amusement I derived from the expression of disbelief on the face of my former mate was one that brought me immense satisfaction indeed. He remained standing in the same spot since he had seen me, with his Beta beside him. “So it is true then?” He asked again, the disbelief suddenly giving way to an emotion I did not quickly realize. “She has already said that it is”, Lena replied hotly from where she way seated. He finally broke his gaze away from mine to shoot her a heated glare. “And who might you be?” He asked with a threatening growl. Before I could open my mouth to warn him to not speak that way to her, her mate, whose hand remained possessively on her shoulder, spoke. “She is my mate”, Alpha Gaius said, the warning clear in his tone and the brief flickering of his eyes that warned that his wolf was not so far from the surface, ready to attack any threat

Regan’s POV By the time a member of Redclaw pack came to escort us to their dining room, Luke had come to terms with the fact that he would have to face his mate, whether he liked it or not. I knew he was eager for answers to finally uncover the mystery behind his brother’s death. And so was I. But unlike Luke, I had a greater desire than that of getting answers. That desire was to see Luke finally happy, with his mate. I had always been able to read people easily, or at least feel their aura. From just our one meeting, I could tell that Luke’s mate, Zara, was not an evil person. Simply a protective and suspicious one. As we arrived at the dining room, we were ushered to our seats. Seated at the head chair of the dining table was who I knew was the Alpha of the pack, simply because of the aura I perceived from him. He looked frail and I could easily tell that he would not last too much longer. His daughter was seated to his right, and other ranked members of his p

Jasmine’s POV I had just returned from my usual morning runs with Lena. She still could not get used to the fact that I had a wolf and her dreams of going on runs with me were being fulfilled. She also could not get over how beautiful she said Snow was. Snow had instantly taking a liking to Lena’s wolf, as I never doubted she would. And although I knew Snow was much faster, she always kept a pace that she knew Lena’s wolf could keep up with whenever we ran. We had just returned from washing up at the stream after our run when Amy ran up to join us. “Luna!” She called, panting for breath from her run. She still refused to call me by my name no matter how many times I had urged her to do so. “There’s a letter”, she said, still panting for breath. “From the Alpha”, she finally managed to get out. On hearing this, I grabbed her hand excitedly and began to pull her into another run. As she opened her mouth to protest, probably to say she could not run any longer, Lena s

Regan’s POV Needless to say, once we had received the pledge from the Alpha of Redclaw pack, there was no reason to remain there much longer. I agreed to stay an additional two nights at their pack for Luke’s sake. I could tell that he wanted more time with his mate. However, the tables had slowly turned. While it had been Luke’s mate who seemed besotted before, Luke’s eyes now followed her everywhere like a love sick puppy. It was amusing to say the least since I had never seen him that way. Our warriors had even started to secretly tease him among themselves about how he was completely besotted with his mate. She, on the other hand, seemed to be avoiding him, even though her eyes searched for him whenever she walked into a room, only to look away when she saw him already watching her. I had written to my mate about Luke finding his mate, so that she could share the good news with Lena and Nana. However, seeing Luke and his mate simply made me miss mine so much

Jasmine’s POV I woke up that morning feeling that something was different. Not different in a bad sense but different anyway. I sat up on my bed and looked at the empty space beside me. Not a day went by where I did not miss my mate. And though we sent letters to each other, it did nothing to ease the ache of his absence. Lena had decided to wait until their return before setting a date for her mating ceremony. Although she was very excited and looked forward to it, she insisted that it would not be complete without both her brothers. There was nothing I could say to argue with that. I cleaned up and changed to join Lena at the sanctuary, where we were to meet to go for our morning run. As soon as I stepped into the sanctuary where she was seated on the fallen trunk, waiting for me, she immediately froze, a frown on her face. “What is it?” I asked, stepping closer to her in concern. “We are not alone”, she said in almost a whisper, looking attentive as though

Jasmine’s POV It was a surprise to everyone at breakfast the next morning to see Luke seated to Regan’s left, and the two thoroughly engaged in conversation. I am sure Luke’s mate was surprised as well because we shared a glance of astonishment before turning back to watch our mates interact. It was as though Luke had never left. The only difference was, when before it would be very obvious that they were both mind linking the other, it had now become that they would openly speak to each other. I secretly believed they did that so that Lena could see. If she saw and was affected by it, she hid it well, keeping a blank and almoubored expression on her face and only interacting with the ladies and her mate throughout the meal. It was the bored expression that let me know that she was indeed affected. Lena was never bored. If she was, she created something to entertain herself and others. Regan’s POV It had been three days since Luke came home and I could still feel the awkwardness between us. Lena had still not relented in her mission to pretend he did not exist and for the most part, I felt sorry for him. Lady Zara was getting along famously with the ladies, who went out of their way to include her in every activity they performed. They had even taken her to their favorite place at the stream and it was clear to see that Lady Zara was thoroughly enjoying her stay in our pack. For my part, I was mostly confused. I did not know whether to have Luke perform duties around the pack, just as I normally would. But it was not the same. I did not even know if o could still refer to him as my Beta. We had not had a single meaningful conversation since his return. On one hand, his mate was the last relative of the deceased Alpha of Redclaw pack, which meant that he could take up the leadership of the pack as its Alpha if he chose to remain there with her. O

I had known that Lena’s feelings had been hurt by Luke’s refusal to respond to the several letters she had sent him while he had been away. However, I had assumed that all would be forgiven once he returned home. I had assumed wrong. She had avoided seeing him all day and had remained in the privacy of her room until it was time for Supper. Then, she had emerged in all her cold beauty and proceeded to sit as far away from Luke at the dinner table in the pack house. Despite her avoidance of Luke and her ignoring of his existence, her cold treatment was never given to Luke’s mate, who she had pulled into a hug and gushed over how beautiful she was the moment Nana had introduced her. Regan’s POV It had been more than ten days since my warriors and I returned from our successful journey. I had received several letters from the Alpha and Luna of Nighthowl pack. Alpha Regan kept me informed on his progress with the Council of Elders while his Luna wrote to ask about my well being as well as that of my mate and our unborn pup. She also wrote to inform me that she had written to her distant nephew, the Alpha of Moonrock pack, and encouraged me to write to him, assuring me of his acceptance to hear of my request. After receiving that particular letter, I wasted no time in writing to the Alpha of Moonrock pack, convincing Alpha Gaiu to do the same on our behalf. He readily agreed, if for nothing else but for his mate sake, I suspected. However, despite writing and receiving letters, I had yet to receive a letter from the one person I had not realized I had wished to hear from the most. Luke. With his arm around my waist, my mate led us back to our home after our evening meal with the rest of the pack to welcome our warriors back. Mira had done an absolutely marvelous job at cooking up the most sumptuous meal for our supper. Everyone had eaten their feel and the mood was very merry. However, throughout the meal, Isla remained quiet as usual, only lightly conversing with Lena or other wise quietly watching and smiling to some antics the warriors did. Most of them were somewhat drunk and were obnoxiously loud. One thing that was clear to anyone with eyes was how much and how often most of the warriors who had returned -most of which were unmated - tried to gain Isla’s attention. At first, they had simply stared at her or passed her admiring glances. But once they started to drink, they grew bolder with trying to g
