Regan’s POV
It did not take us long to arrive at Redclaw pack once my request to be accepted into the pack was granted. A part of me had thought it would have been rejected and was quite satisfied with that since it meant Luke would be spared the emotional torture the meeting might turn out to be for him. All the same, he rode beside me with a straight face, obviously deep in his thoughts that I did not dare intrude upon. A part of me suddenly wished we had not come with horses. It meant our quest would have been faster in a sense. We could have run in our wolf forms to arrive at the packs we had to visit. However, three concerns had made me decide otherwise. The first was that we had planned to visit several packs, which meant we had to come with a lot of gifts for each pack we visited, hence why we had to bring along two carts. Running in our wolf form meant we would have had to carry all those tributes and gifts and would have left us exhausted very quickly, especially given the length of our journey. The second was that we were preparing for a war, so it would not do to tire or exhaust my warriors. The last reason was quite simple. It was often seen as an act of war to arrive at a pack in one’s wolf form and in large numbers. Our purpose was a peaceful one and I did not wish my actions to be misinterpreted in any way. Hence, the horses. We arrived at Redclaw pack and were ushered in by some of their warriors who led us to their pack house where, as expected, their Alpha and pack members waited outside to give us the customary welcome greeting. I had heard Luke mind link our warriors to be on alert and I agreed with him. He motioned for Emry, who was the youngest of our party, to stay close to him as we dismounted from our horses. I led the way to the pack members and Alpha that waited on us. As soon as we approached, I looked around to observe who had the Alpha energy and was quite surprised when a she-wolf stepped forward. Although she did not give off the full Alpha energy, it was clear to see that she was related to the Alpha. I felt that familiar aura around her. She stood proud with her flaming red hair and forest green eyes, giving me a wary look before bowing her head in respect. “Greetings, Alpha and warriors of the Midnight Wolves pack”, she said and lifted her head, her gaze barely leaving mine. I felt the corner of my lips curve into a smile at her obvious suspicion. A part of me admired how she did not try to hide the fact that she was suspicious of us. Her eyes narrowed in on the smile on my lips but she did not comment. “I welcome you to Redclaw pack”, she said. “Unfortunately, our Alpha cannot be here to welcome you and has sent me in his stead. However, he will join us for supper”, she said. I nodded at her words before deciding to needle her. “We thank you for your welcome”, I said. “Although, I fear we have no idea as to whom you are”, I said, pointing out her mistake. She blushed a bright red to her roots and turned to look over my shoulder before freezing in place. At the sight of whoever it was she had seen behind me, she turned pale. Noticing her strange reaction, I turned around to see what had made her react like that. Of all the possibilities I could have come up with, never in a million years would I have thought of the scene taking place before me. The person who had caught her eye was Luke, and he was looking at her with the same horrified, though besotted, look on his face. The look was one I knew all too well, but I needed to confirm it. ‘Luke?’ I mind linked him. ‘Is all well?’ I asked. He did not take his eyes off her at first, simply continued staring for a while before forcing himself to break eye contact with her and turn to me. ‘She’s my bloody mate’, he cursed in reply to my enquiry through our mind link. My eyebrow lifted in surprise. The Moon Goddess and Fates certainly had a twisted sense of humor. What were the odds that the mate Luke had searched for and longed for all his life was a pretty red head who was a relative of the Alpha of the pack that was responsible for the death of his brother? Shaking my head in wonder, I turned back to face the redhead. She had torn her gaze away from Luke and was already looking at me. “My name is Zara”, she said, recovering quite well and doing an admirable job of hiding her emotions behind a blank expression. For a moment, I wondered how often she had to do that to become quite good at it. “I am the daughter of Alpha Zolan of the Redclaw pack”, she introduced herself with a brief bow. “I am Alpha Regan of the Midnight Wolves pack”, I said to her, before turning to bring Luke forward to stand beside me. “And this is my Beta and friend”, I said, holding Luke firmly in place when he would have resisted. “Beta Luke”, I introduced. Luke kept his eyes to the floor even as he bowed in greeting to her. I saw a look of hurt flash across her face so fast that I would have missed it if I had blinked, before her expression returned to its practiced blankness. She returned his nod with a stiff one of hers before continuing with the introductions. By the time we were done with the introductions and had presented our gifts, she had some pack members show us to the rooms we would be staying in during our short visit. “You should clean yourselves and rest for a short while”, she said, letting her eyes sweep across us all with an unimpressed look before continuing. “I will send some one to come and fetch you once it is time for supper”, she said with that same look before turning around and walking away. I couldn’t control the smile that came onto my lips at her obvious disapproval of our presence. Personally, with the terrible history aside, I thought she was quite perfect for Luke. I kept that thought to myself however, at least for the moment. As we made our way into our rooms, I placed my luggage on the floor beside my bed before leaving the room to go to the one across from it, knocking just once before pushing the door open. Emry was inside already. “What are you doing here?” I asked him simply because I had not expected to see him there. “As most of the warriors are sharing rooms”, Luke responded in his stead. “The room he was to stay in was crowded enough. Since we both get our personal rooms due to our ranks, I thought it would harm no one to have him share my room with me”, he said. I nodded at his words as they made a lot of sense before turning to Emry who watched on. “Leave us alone for a while, Pup”, I told him. “I have something to discuss with Luke”, I told him. “You can rest in my room for the time being”, I said to him. He nodded at once. “Yes, Alpha”, he said before making his way to the door. As the door shut after him and he walked away, I could have sworn I heard him murmur, “I am not a pup”, before I heard my room door open and close after him. I smiled at his antics before turning to face Luke. He was busy unpacking the few necessities he would need for his stay. I stood there in silence until he finally let out a breath and turned around. “I do not wish to talk about it”, he said, once he turned to face me. “I’m afraid you have no choice in the matter”, I told him, bringing my arms to fold them across my chest. “She’s your mate”, I reminded him, just in case he had forgotten. “And it was simply not right how you treated her”, I told him. He looked away in guilt. “I know”, he said. “But how in the name of the Goddess was I supposed to react to finding out my mate is from Redclaw pack?” He asked. “And worst of all, that she’s the daughter of its Alpha?” He asked. I said nothing. He had a point. “What do you plan to do now?” I asked him. “There is only one thing to do”, he said. Before he said the words, I already say them on his face. “I will reject her”, he said. “Luke, do not be a fool!” I said with a heated glare. “She has done nothing to deserve that”, I told him. He glared back at me. “Have you suddenly forgotten that her pack is responsible for the death of my brother?” He asked. “Her pack”, I pointed out. “Not her”, I said. “I am sure that she was no older than us when that unfortunate incident took place. You cannot blame her for something she took no part in”, I told him. He looked at me for a moment, eyes narrowed. “Do you also think this way when it involves members of Blackmoon pack?” He asked. “Or is this thought meant only for my mate and her pack?” I knew he was trying to get a rise out of me, but I truly did not wish to fight with him again. “All I am saying is”, I said instead of rising to the bait. “You have waited your whole life just to find her. Do not make a mistake you may live to regret forever, simply because you think you have to”, I told him. I saw the immediate regret of his earlier words on his face. “I apologize for saying those words”, he said. “Forgive me”, he pleaded. I nodded. “You are forgiven”, I told him then went on when I saw the torment on his face. “This might be an opportunity to finally discover what happened those years ago”, I told him. He looked up at my words. “To be fair”, I said. “All we know is that Redclaw pack was responsible for Lane’s death. But we do not even know how he died”. I could see his mind quick at work, already on the same path as me. That was why no one could ever replace Luke for me, no one could understand me or how I thought, better than him. “And I have always wondered”, he said. “Why was it that our father’s never tried to avenge his death?” He asked, voicing his thoughts aloud. “I have wondered the same thing, time and time again”, I said. “And now, fate has brought us to the place it all took place”, I said. “It is the perfect opportunity to find the answers we seek”, he said. “And it has so happened that you are in a position to find out the truth”, I told him. Granted, I had an ulterior motive for enticing my friend with this plan. He looked at me, as though already knowing where I was going. “And what opportunity might that be?” He asked anyway. I took a step closer. “Your mate”, I said. “She’s the daughter of the Alpha”, I reminded. “If there is anyone that can help you find the answers we seek, it is her”, I told him. He nodded his agreement. “I agree”, he said. “But I believe she already hates me”, he said. “Impossible”, I said immediately. “I watched her closely”, I reported. “She could barely keep her eyes off you”, I caught the twitch at the corner of his lips but pretended not to notice. “And she looked quite hurt when you did not look at her during your introduction”, I said. He was quiet for a while and I knew my plan would work even before he nodded. “Very well”, he said. “I will pay her attention”, he said. “Good”, I said with a nod. “We would need her to fall in love with you for our plan to work”, I said to him. And I would need you to fall in love with her for my plan to work, I thought with a smile.Jasmine’s POV Since I had no choice in the matter, I took amusement from wherever I could. At the moment, the amusement I derived from the expression of disbelief on the face of my former mate was one that brought me immense satisfaction indeed. He remained standing in the same spot since he had seen me, with his Beta beside him. “So it is true then?” He asked again, the disbelief suddenly giving way to an emotion I did not quickly realize. “She has already said that it is”, Lena replied hotly from where she way seated. He finally broke his gaze away from mine to shoot her a heated glare. “And who might you be?” He asked with a threatening growl. Before I could open my mouth to warn him to not speak that way to her, her mate, whose hand remained possessively on her shoulder, spoke. “She is my mate”, Alpha Gaius said, the warning clear in his tone and the brief flickering of his eyes that warned that his wolf was not so far from the surface, ready to attack any threat
Regan’s POV By the time a member of Redclaw pack came to escort us to their dining room, Luke had come to terms with the fact that he would have to face his mate, whether he liked it or not. I knew he was eager for answers to finally uncover the mystery behind his brother’s death. And so was I. But unlike Luke, I had a greater desire than that of getting answers. That desire was to see Luke finally happy, with his mate. I had always been able to read people easily, or at least feel their aura. From just our one meeting, I could tell that Luke’s mate, Zara, was not an evil person. Simply a protective and suspicious one. As we arrived at the dining room, we were ushered to our seats. Seated at the head chair of the dining table was who I knew was the Alpha of the pack, simply because of the aura I perceived from him. He looked frail and I could easily tell that he would not last too much longer. His daughter was seated to his right, and other ranked members of his p
Jasmine’s POV. “Please don’t say that”, I whimpered as I stared at my mate in shock, sure that if I had a wolf, she would be howling in pain at the words that were coming out of his mouth. “I’m an Alpha”, he said. “An Alpha of one of the strongest packs in our world. It would be seen as the ultimate mark of weakness to have a mate that is without rank and a wolf”, he told me, looking me over with his decision clear in his eyes. I looked away and resisted the urge to curl into a ball and sob, instead distracting myself with anything that came to mind. That was probably why I blurted out the first question that came to my mind. “How did you know?” I asked, staring down at my feet in shame. “Bianca told me”, he said and my head whipped up so fast since that wasn’t the answer I had been expecting. “What?” I asked in surprise. “How does she know that?” Before he could respond however, the snotty voice that belonged to the witch in question came from the open door behind me.
Jasmine’s POV. “Jasmine!” I heard a familiar voice call through the darkness. “Jasmine, you must wake up”, the voice whispered urgently even as hands jerked me awake, pulling me from the darkness. I opened my eyes to the face of my mother, a fear in her eyes that mirrored the urgency in her voice. “Mama?” I called out softly in confusion, still dazed from sleep. “Get up”, she urged. “Quickly!” Even as she spoke, she moved away from me to rummage through the bag she had sewn for me out of the animal skin father had skinned. “We do not have time”, she said, moving about the room and putting things into the bag before closing it. “Come”, she said and scooped me up from my bed and into her arms. She held onto the bag with one hand and hurried through our humble house and out the back door which led into the dark woods. There, my father stood. There was a dead wolf a small distance away from me that my mother turned my head away from seeing properly through the darkness
Jasmine’s POV The darkness of the hole gave way to another darkness that soon engulfed me. Howling sounds pulled me from the darkness this time and when I came to, I looked around and realised that I was in the same room my mate had all but rejected me in. I was still sprawled out on the cold floor and from the tight muscle pains that radiated all over my body and the cold I could feel in my bones, I knew I had been passed out for a while. It had been a dream. A dream I hadn’t had in a very long time. One that felt more like a memory than a dream but I could never be too sure. The only thing that made me think it was not just a dream was the fact that my guardian was a man with a scar under his left eye. Other than that, I had no clue on anything else. I shifted from my position, a groan escaping my cold, chapped lips as I brought myself to a sit on the cold floor. I could still hear the several howls that had pulled me out of my unconsciousness. The clear difference
Unknown POV He picked up another scroll that laid beside the books and papers stacked on the desk he sat behind and read through another report from some warriors on an errand to an ally pack up north. He scowled at the contents written in it, still ignoring the presence of the three men who stood before him on the other side of the table. Having read enough of the scroll’s contents, he tossed it aside and turned his scowl to the men who waited silently. He regarded each of them without a word, knowing his silence would only make them grow nervous and fearful. That was his intent after all. He finally decided to break his silence when the youngest of the three began to tremble. “You said you had important information for me regarding Blackmoon”, he said, biting back his smirk at their fear. “Yes, Alpha”, the older, more muscular one said immediately. “Then tell me”, he urged. The three exchanged looks before the trembling youngster took a step forward.
Jasmine’s POV I couldn’t muster the ability to care that I was now sprawled out on the floor of the wooden cabin I had been unceremoniously dumped in two days before. I had been brought here after my mate had pronounced my sentence and I had cried my eyes out. As I laid out on the cold floor, allowing the cold to seep into my bones and ignoring the second plate of oatmeal and dried fish that had been brought earlier by one of the guards of my cabin prison, I discovered an emotion that was though strange, yet comforting. That emotion was anger. I had gone through several emotions since being thrown into the cabin. The first was pain. Literal pain from the injuries I had sustained while being rough handled and treated like a criminal, and emotional pain from all that I had gone through. The second was shock because I could not believe that it was all really happening. I wished I was evil enough to have done what I was accused of but I was not. The next was
Jasmine’s POV. As soon as the door to the study slammed shut behind me, I breathed a sign of relief. I could feel my aching shoulders relax and felt such ease being away from the scorching gaze of the Alpha. Looking forward to where Luke now stood with a teasing glint in his hazel eyes, no doubt seeing my relief, I felt my shoulders tense once again. The fact that the Alpha was more scary didn’t mean I wasn’t still scared of Luke. “Believe me when I say you have less to fear from me”, he said as if reading my mind. “I will not hurt you if you do not give me a reason to”, he added turning away from me to start walking down a hallway. Since he was the only one I could somewhat trust to not harm me as long as I behaved, I hurried after him, making sure to walk behind him with my eyes downcast to avoid the stares from any werewolves we came across. He led me out the way we had come and into the gaze of the fully risen Sun. He took the opposite path from the woods and led me dow

Jasmine’s POV After my judgment on the mother and daughter who had lied against Amy, I noticed that members of my pack began to treat me differently. And not in a bad way. If they had treated me with anything close to respect, due to the fact that I was their Alpha’s mate, they now treated me with respect and admiration. Lena had ensured that my sentences on the mother and daughter were carried out. More than anyone, she had been proud of how I had handled the case and took great joy in narrating the occurrence in great detail to Nana and Mari, who had been disappointed that they had not been present to witness the even for themselves. Amy and Emry’s mother, who worked closely alongside Nana at the healing house was full of thanks, even going as far as shedding a few tears, to express her gratitude for how I had come to her daughter’s rescue. Like her daughter, she was a quiet she-wolf who had lost her husband years ago and worked at the healing house to provide for her
Regan’s POV After getting Stonghold pack’s pledge, we visited six more packs that gave similar responses, all pledging to come when we called. Since each pack we visited insisted we dined with them and even spend the night before continuing our journey, as was customary hospitality among werewolves, I could not turn them down without being disrespectful. Especially since I had come to seek their aid. This simply meant that our journey took longer than originally planned. I had to write to Nana to tell her that all was well with us after receiving several spelled messages from her and Gaia, all enquiring about our well being. I knew that Jasmine would be the most worried of everyone back at home. And that was the last thing I wanted, to worry or upset her in any well. It would not be good for both her and our pup. As we rested in the rooms provided for us by the current pack we were visiting, a knock on my door drew my attention from the map I had been observing. I immediat
Jasmine’s POV It was hard to cope with Regan and Luke’s absence. Especially that of my mate. I prayed so much more than I usually did for the success of their mission and for their safe return home. Concerning things at the pack, I did not have much to worry about. Regan had done an incredible work of preparing all that I would need in his absence. As he had earlier said before leaving, his Gamma handled the day to day routine and managed quite well, only coming to me when my guidance or authority was required. And I was not required much. With everything else, Nana and Lena never left my side. Always ready with help or advice whenever I would need it. Their presence made the absence of my mate bearable. Gaia had decided to check on me and the pup each day, to know if there was any immediate threat against us and how to avert it. It eased my worries each time she told me everything was well. Although I wondered if she would tell me if all was not. It was more l
Regan’s POV Since it was my first time being away from her, I found it somewhat difficult to adapt to the absence of my mate. Rage’s whining was not helping. He felt her absence more than I did since he felt my emotions more intensely. Even though he understood the reason we had to go, it did not stop him from sulking and whining at the absence of our mate. A part of me wanted nothing more than to turn around and return home, but it would be the wrong decision to make and I knew that. So we rode on, keeping a steady pace and rode towards the opposite path from where Blackmoon pack was. The fact that we took an entirely different route simply to avoid them spoke a lot of our hatred for them. We headed towards the next closest pack to us, a pack whose Alpha was an old friend of my father’s. I sent two of my warriors ahead to announce our arrival, and not too long after, they came back with news of the Alpha’s acceptance to have us in his pack. When we met up with a
Jasmine’s POV The day I had been dreading finally came. I woke up once again to an empty bed. Since that was not anything new, I simply readied myself for the day before making my way out of the room. I joined Lena in the kitchen of our house and together, we prepared breakfast. Nana was absent, as she usually was due to Gaia’s presence, and Regan’s Gamma and his mate had moved out to live in a small cabin of their own not to far away from the pack house after having their pup. Since our house had several more rooms, Gaia and Alpha Gaius were asked to move in since they were going to be in our pack longer than they had initially planned. Lena was thrilled with this development, but however pleased I was for her, I could not shake the suspicion that Regan had prepared it all to have me protected at all times. It felt like he had placed people everywhere to protect me in his absence and as much as I loved and appreciated his protective nature, there was only so much e
Unknown POV. She stood before a large window, over looking the blizzard outside the castle. It was nothing new for the weather to be like that. It was often cold down there. It was one thing she missed about home. The endless warmth of spring that allowed her wear the lightest clothes. Her beautiful sewn clothes had always been one of the latest fashion and accentuated her curves. Unlike the coat she wore at the moment. Ever since coming there, she had been forced to wear thick coats and clothes in order to ward off the cold. No one had forced her, the dreary weather had done that all by itself and she hated it. It was constantly snowing and she missed the warmth is spring back at home. Her red lips curled in a humorless smile. Home. When had she ever had one? If she ever did, it was surely gone now. Everyone back there now saw her as a traitor anyway, and they were not particularly wrong about that. But then again, everyone she remembered bqck then were pro
