Jasmine’s POV

Since I had no choice in the matter, I took amusement from wherever I could.

At the moment, the amusement I derived from the expression of disbelief on the face of my former mate was one that brought me immense satisfaction indeed.

He remained standing in the same spot since he had seen me, with his Beta beside him.

“So it is true then?” He asked again, the disbelief suddenly giving way to an emotion I did not quickly realize.

“She has already said that it is”, Lena replied hotly from where she way seated.

He finally broke his gaze away from mine to shoot her a heated glare.

“And who might you be?” He asked with a threatening growl.

Before I could open my mouth to warn him to not speak that way to her, her mate, whose hand remained possessively on her shoulder, spoke.

“She is my mate”, Alpha Gaius said, the warning clear in his tone and the brief flickering of his eyes that warned that his wolf was not so far from the surface, ready to attack any threat posed against their mate.

Since Carson had probably not noticed before, it was clear to see from his retreat that he had finally noticed the aura of an Alpha that surrounded Alpha Gaius, and knew that it would not be wise to threaten the mate of an Alpha wolf in his presence.

Werewolves, especially Alpha werewolves were known to be very protective of their mates, even going as far as starting wars whenever they perceived any disrespect directed at their mate.

Carson gave a humiliating nod before turning back to me.

Seeing him and his reactions, I couldn’t help but compare him to my mate.

Regan was a strong, Alpha werewolf. Decisive, wise and possessive. Brave and courageous. Never hesitating to protect me and everything that concerned me.

The authority his mere presence commanded was astounding. And the power that radiated off him left everyone who saw him without a doubt that he was a powerful Alpha.

I was always proud of the fact that he was my mate.

And compared to him, Carson was quite a pathetic excuse of an Alpha.

And watching him as he stood before me simply made it too glaring.

“You should have been my mate”, he suddenly said out of nowhere.

Everyone in the room tensed, our Gamma even coming to his feet with a warning growl.

Their reactions were understandable.

One of the worst crimes that could be committed in the werewolf realm was that of lusting after or wanting someone else’s mate.

Especially if the affection or attention was not mutual.

That Carson voiced that out in a gathering of members of my pack was an affront, not just to me, but to my mate who was Alpha, and by extension my pack as well.

I decided then to add foolish to the ever growing list of his attributes.

Before anyone else could react and escalate the matter, I responded.

“I was never going to be your mate”, I told him.

“The Moon Goddess chose us to be together”, he said, further agitating those press with his foolishly spoken words.

“No”, I said Imm with a firm shake of my head. “The Moon Goddess wanted me to understand that I deserved better, so that I would not be confused when the mate she had destined for me came along”, I told him firmly, holding his gaze so that he would be left without a doubt.

“I am the mate of the Powerful Alpha of the Midnight Wolves pack”, I told him. “And as long as you are standing in my pack, you will pay us that respect and not utter any more foolish words that could cost you your life”, I told him.

He looked at me in surprise.

“You have changed”, he said, almost in wonder. “You are not the same she-wolf I knew”, he said to me.

I leaned comfortably into the warmth of my mate’s chair.

“I am pleased that you noticed”, I told him. “That she-wolf you thought you knew died a long time ago”, I said. “She will never return”.

I allowed my words to sink in before picking up the letter with the crest of the Council of Elders.

“In this letter”, I said, holding up the letter. “It is said that you wished for an audience with our pack in order to try to make amends for your crimes in the past”, I said, summarizing the context of the letter. “I advise you to get on with it before my presence is needed elsewhere”, I told him.

He looked at me with that gaze that I did not like before briefly turning to glance back at his Beta and turning back to me.

“We have heard rumors from the neighboring packs”, he said. “Rumors talking about a prophesy. About a she-wolf with the Royal markings”, he said.

I could not help but cut in.

“Oh yes”, I said. “As it turned out, those horrid birth marks on my back were actually the Royal markings concealed by a spell”, I said, my tone mocking enough so that he could get the message within.

He looked away and brought a hand up to scratch his chin, a habit I detested seeing as it brought out memories I was not fond of.

“I see”, he murmured.

“Well”, I said. “I do not see how that should make you request for an audience with my pack”, I said. “I am sure I am not the only one that finds it strange that you would go to such lengths to be allowed into our pack simply because you heard a rumor”, I said.

He was silently for a while before he spoke.

“My initial desire was to offer a hand of peace and pledge the assistance of my pack to the service of the Royal bloodline”, h e finally said.

I was quiet for a short moment while I observed him.

“Surely you do not expect me to believe that”, I said. “That you would now choose to offer a hand of assistance to the Midnight Wolves pack, whom you have committed multiple crimes against, simply to serve the Royal bloodline”, I told him with a stern gaze.

“Luna”, Lena called from where she was seated, drawing my attention away from Carson, to her. “Can I just draw attention to the statement he just made?” She requested and went on at my nod of approval. “He said his initial desire was to offer a hand of peace”, she said before turning to Carson to shoot him a look of accusation. “I wonder what his new found desire is now”, she said.

At her words, I turned back to him to see him looking unsurprised at her words.

“You heard her, Carson”, I said. “Do tell us of your new found desire”, I urged with a stern look.

He held my gaze for a moment before a clear look determination took over his features.

It caused a shiver I did not like to run down my spine.

But still, I took in a deep subtly and waited for his response.

“I now have one desire”, he said seriously. “And that is to win back my mate”, he declared.

At his declaration, everyone seated rose to their feet in outrage at his words.

That he had first said it carelessly, they had let it slide for my sake, I knew.

But the way he had repeated it in seriousness, it was a clear threat against me and my pack.

“Let me say this and make myself very clear”, I told him, also rising to my feet to lean forward and rest my open palms on the desk.

“I will never be your mate”, I told him firmly. “I have a mate, and he is all I will ever need”, I said. “If by some impossible reason, he chooses to reject me today, he will still remain the only mate I know”, I told him. “I will never be yours. Not in life and certainly not in death”, I said, and simply to refresh his memory, added. “Have you forgotten that it was you who sentenced me to death despite knowing I was your mate?” I asked.

He looked to the ground to avoid my glaring eyes, but I was not finished.

“Have you forgotten that it was in your pack that I was humiliated and maltreated?” I asked him. “And with your approval that I was flogged and maltreated by your mistress?” I asked.

At my words, I heard a surprised gasp from Gaia, and saw her turn to Nana who nodded to the truth of my words, from the corner of my eyes.

“You broke me and abandoned me”, I told him. “And I will forever thank the Moon Goddess for showing me who you truly are”, I said and leaned back to make my way around the desk.

“You rejected me”, I said, coming to a stop in front of me. “And for that, I thank you”, I said, a smile slowly coming onto my face. “Because if you had not done all those things to me, it would never had brought me to my true mate. The true one the Moon Goddess had destined for me all along”, I told him, even as his jaw clenched.

“He accepted me as I was”, I told him. “He loved me with every scar you placed on me. He made me strong. He made me understand what it meant to have a true mate”, I said and took another step closer so that my words would hit perfectly.

“He made me know the difference between a true wolf”, I leaned closer, bringing my voice low despite knowing everyone could hear me. “And a coward”, I whispered.

His eyes flickered but rather than being afraid, I laughed in his face, before turning away and walking back to resume my seat.

“This is the last time I will show you mercy for your careless words”, I told him as I sat down in my mate’s chair.

“The next time you insult me and my pack with such nonsense talk”, I said. “It would be the last time you have a tongue”, I finished with a smile before leaning back.

“And while I know you well enough to not believe the lie in your pretense for wanting peace, I appreciate your effort in even attempting to do so”, I said. “However, seeing as it is quite insincere, I reject your offer and ban you and any members of your pack from coming anywhere close to the borders of my pack”. I allowed the smile melt off my face to be replaced by a hard look. “If any of your pack members so much as come close to our borders, they will be killed instantly”, I declared. “This is the last time you will be granted access into our pack. Any future attempts you make will be rejected, irrespective of whatever crests your letter may carry”, I said firmly.

I did not care if the council of elders themselves pleaded for me to see him again. I never wanted to set eyes on him again.

I was long done with Tyler Carson of the Blackmoon pack.

With that said, I turned to my Gamma.

“Please ensure that him and his company are escorted out of our pack”, I told him as he rose to his feet to carry out my command. “They are never to step foot anywhere close to our pack or its borders”, i told him.

“Yes, Luna”, he said with a bow before turning to usher Carson and his Beta out of our study.

As he left, Carson turned back with a look and a smile that made my stomach turn.

“Until next time, my Jasmine”, he said before her was almost pushed out by our Gamma and the door slammed shut.

Gaia immediately rose to her feet.

“I am afraid that is not the last time you will see him, my Dear”, she said, and I knew for certain that she had seen something.

“I know”, I told her, not knowing how, but being certain of that one thing.

Jasmine’s POV. “Please don’t say that”, I whimpered as I stared at my mate in shock, sure that if I had a wolf, she would be howling in pain at the words that were coming out of his mouth. “I’m an Alpha”, he said. “An Alpha of one of the strongest packs in our world. It would be seen as the ultimate mark of weakness to have a mate that is without rank and a wolf”, he told me, looking me over with his decision clear in his eyes. I looked away and resisted the urge to curl into a ball and sob, instead distracting myself with anything that came to mind. That was probably why I blurted out the first question that came to my mind. “How did you know?” I asked, staring down at my feet in shame. “Bianca told me”, he said and my head whipped up so fast since that wasn’t the answer I had been expecting. “What?” I asked in surprise. “How does she know that?” Before he could respond however, the snotty voice that belonged to the witch in question came from the open door behind me.

Jasmine’s POV. “Jasmine!” I heard a familiar voice call through the darkness. “Jasmine, you must wake up”, the voice whispered urgently even as hands jerked me awake, pulling me from the darkness. I opened my eyes to the face of my mother, a fear in her eyes that mirrored the urgency in her voice. “Mama?” I called out softly in confusion, still dazed from sleep. “Get up”, she urged. “Quickly!” Even as she spoke, she moved away from me to rummage through the bag she had sewn for me out of the animal skin father had skinned. “We do not have time”, she said, moving about the room and putting things into the bag before closing it. “Come”, she said and scooped me up from my bed and into her arms. She held onto the bag with one hand and hurried through our humble house and out the back door which led into the dark woods. There, my father stood. There was a dead wolf a small distance away from me that my mother turned my head away from seeing properly through the darkness

Jasmine’s POV The darkness of the hole gave way to another darkness that soon engulfed me. Howling sounds pulled me from the darkness this time and when I came to, I looked around and realised that I was in the same room my mate had all but rejected me in. I was still sprawled out on the cold floor and from the tight muscle pains that radiated all over my body and the cold I could feel in my bones, I knew I had been passed out for a while. It had been a dream. A dream I hadn’t had in a very long time. One that felt more like a memory than a dream but I could never be too sure. The only thing that made me think it was not just a dream was the fact that my guardian was a man with a scar under his left eye. Other than that, I had no clue on anything else. I shifted from my position, a groan escaping my cold, chapped lips as I brought myself to a sit on the cold floor. I could still hear the several howls that had pulled me out of my unconsciousness. The clear difference

Unknown POV He picked up another scroll that laid beside the books and papers stacked on the desk he sat behind and read through another report from some warriors on an errand to an ally pack up north. He scowled at the contents written in it, still ignoring the presence of the three men who stood before him on the other side of the table. Having read enough of the scroll’s contents, he tossed it aside and turned his scowl to the men who waited silently. He regarded each of them without a word, knowing his silence would only make them grow nervous and fearful. That was his intent after all. He finally decided to break his silence when the youngest of the three began to tremble. “You said you had important information for me regarding Blackmoon”, he said, biting back his smirk at their fear. “Yes, Alpha”, the older, more muscular one said immediately. “Then tell me”, he urged. The three exchanged looks before the trembling youngster took a step forward.

Jasmine’s POV I couldn’t muster the ability to care that I was now sprawled out on the floor of the wooden cabin I had been unceremoniously dumped in two days before. I had been brought here after my mate had pronounced my sentence and I had cried my eyes out. As I laid out on the cold floor, allowing the cold to seep into my bones and ignoring the second plate of oatmeal and dried fish that had been brought earlier by one of the guards of my cabin prison, I discovered an emotion that was though strange, yet comforting. That emotion was anger. I had gone through several emotions since being thrown into the cabin. The first was pain. Literal pain from the injuries I had sustained while being rough handled and treated like a criminal, and emotional pain from all that I had gone through. The second was shock because I could not believe that it was all really happening. I wished I was evil enough to have done what I was accused of but I was not. The next was

I could feel my aching shoulders relax and felt such ease being away from the scorching gaze of the Alpha. Looking forward to where Luke now stood with a teasing glint in his hazel eyes, no doubt seeing my relief, I felt my shoulders tense once again. The fact that the Alpha was more scary didn’t mean I wasn’t still scared of Luke. “Believe me when I say you have less to fear from me”, he said as if reading my mind. “I will not hurt you if you do not give me a reason to”, he added turning away from me to start walking down a hallway. Since he was the only one I could somewhat trust to not harm me as long as I behaved, I hurried after him, making sure to walk behind him with my eyes downcast to avoid the stares from any werewolves we came across. He led me out the way we had come and into the gaze of the fully risen Sun. He took the opposite path from the woods and led me dow

Biting down on a groan, I brought my aching body to a sitting position, then pushed myself to stand and make my way to the door. I opened it to see a pretty red haired woman with freckled cheeks standing before me with a smile. She looked to be a bit older than me and her smiling brown eyes showed a warmth I was not familiar with receiving. “My name is Lena”, she said. “It’s short for Elena. May I come in?” She asked almost immediately and it took me a moment to respond. “Yes, you may”, I said, opening the door wider to let her in. I was still in a state between shock and disbelief and automatically shut the door after she made her way in. It was as I turned around to look at her that I noticed sh

Regan’s POV It did not take us long to arrive at Redclaw pack once my request to be accepted into the pack was granted. A part of me had thought it would have been rejected and was quite satisfied with that since it meant Luke would be spared the emotional torture the meeting might turn out to be for him. All the same, he rode beside me with a straight face, obviously deep in his thoughts that I did not dare intrude upon. A part of me suddenly wished we had not come with horses. It meant our quest would have been faster in a sense. We could have run in our wolf forms to arrive at the packs we had to visit. However, three concerns had made me decide otherwise. The first was that we had planned to visit several packs, which meant we had to come with a lot of gifts for each pack we visited, hence why we had to bring along two carts. Running in our wolf form meant we would have had to carry all those tributes and gifts and would have left us exhausted very quickly, especi

Jasmine’s POV After my judgment on the mother and daughter who had lied against Amy, I noticed that members of my pack began to treat me differently. And not in a bad way. If they had treated me with anything close to respect, due to the fact that I was their Alpha’s mate, they now treated me with respect and admiration. Lena had ensured that my sentences on the mother and daughter were carried out. More than anyone, she had been proud of how I had handled the case and took great joy in narrating the occurrence in great detail to Nana and Mari, who had been disappointed that they had not been present to witness the even for themselves. Amy and Emry’s mother, who worked closely alongside Nana at the healing house was full of thanks, even going as far as shedding a few tears, to express her gratitude for how I had come to her daughter’s rescue. Like her daughter, she was a quiet she-wolf who had lost her husband years ago and worked at the healing house to provide for her

Regan’s POV After getting Stonghold pack’s pledge, we visited six more packs that gave similar responses, all pledging to come when we called. Since each pack we visited insisted we dined with them and even spend the night before continuing our journey, as was customary hospitality among werewolves, I could not turn them down without being disrespectful. Especially since I had come to seek their aid. This simply meant that our journey took longer than originally planned. I had to write to Nana to tell her that all was well with us after receiving several spelled messages from her and Gaia, all enquiring about our well being. I knew that Jasmine would be the most worried of everyone back at home. And that was the last thing I wanted, to worry or upset her in any well. It would not be good for both her and our pup. As we rested in the rooms provided for us by the current pack we were visiting, a knock on my door drew my attention from the map I had been observing. I immediat

Jasmine’s POV It was hard to cope with Regan and Luke’s absence. Especially that of my mate. I prayed so much more than I usually did for the success of their mission and for their safe return home. Concerning things at the pack, I did not have much to worry about. Regan had done an incredible work of preparing all that I would need in his absence. As he had earlier said before leaving, his Gamma handled the day to day routine and managed quite well, only coming to me when my guidance or authority was required. And I was not required much. With everything else, Nana and Lena never left my side. Always ready with help or advice whenever I would need it. Their presence made the absence of my mate bearable. Gaia had decided to check on me and the pup each day, to know if there was any immediate threat against us and how to avert it. It eased my worries each time she told me everything was well. Regan’s POV Since it was my first time being away from her, I found it somewhat difficult to adapt to the absence of my mate. Rage’s whining was not helping. He felt her absence more than I did since he felt my emotions more intensely. Even though he understood the reason we had to go, it did not stop him from sulking and whining at the absence of our mate. A part of me wanted nothing more than to turn around and return home, but it would be the wrong decision to make and I knew that. So we rode on, keeping a steady pace and rode towards the opposite path from where Blackmoon pack was. The fact that we took an entirely different route simply to avoid them spoke a lot of our hatred for them. We headed towards the next closest pack to us, a pack whose Alpha was an old friend of my father’s. I sent two of my warriors ahead to announce our arrival, and not too long after, they came back with news of the Alpha’s acceptance to have us in his pack. When we met up with a

Since that was not anything new, I simply readied myself for the day before making my way out of the room. I joined Lena in the kitchen of our house and together, we prepared breakfast. Nana was absent, as she usually was due to Gaia’s presence, and Regan’s Gamma and his mate had moved out to live in a small cabin of their own not to far away from the pack house after having their pup. Since our house had several more rooms, Gaia and Alpha Gaius were asked to move in since they were going to be in our pack longer than they had initially planned. Lena was thrilled with this development, but however pleased I was for her, I could not shake the suspicion that Regan had prepared it all to have me protected at all times.
