Jasmine’s POV
I had just returned from my usual morning runs with Lena. She still could not get used to the fact that I had a wolf and her dreams of going on runs with me were being fulfilled. She also could not get over how beautiful she said Snow was. Snow had instantly taking a liking to Lena’s wolf, as I never doubted she would. And although I knew Snow was much faster, she always kept a pace that she knew Lena’s wolf could keep up with whenever we ran. We had just returned from washing up at the stream after our run when Amy ran up to join us. “Luna!” She called, panting for breath from her run. She still refused to call me by my name no matter how many times I had urged her to do so. “There’s a letter”, she said, still panting for breath. “From the Alpha”, she finally managed to get out. On hearing this, I grabbed her hand excitedly and began to pull her into another run. As she opened her mouth to protest, probably to say she could not run any longer, Lena scooped her into her arms and we broke into a run, laughing all the way. I was not worried about Amy being too big or heavy for Lena to easily carry, knowing about her werewolf strength. We raced to our house and entered through the door, still laughing from our race. Gaia and Nana were seated on chairs in the parlor when we walked in. As Lena placed Amy down so that she could stand, I instantly headed towards Nana to kiss her cheek and receive her usual heart warming kisses in return. “Good morning, Gaia”, I greeted, reaching for the letter on the table I knew had been placed there for me. “Good morning, Jasmine”, she greeted in return to while Lena kissed both Nana and her, receiving kisses in return. Since Gaia was the mother of her mate, it was normal that she greeted her with kisses. Amy simply bowed to both women as greeting, before moving to sit beside Lena, who put an arm around her and pulled her close. I sat down to open the letter and was greeted with silence. Everyone waited for me as I went through the contents of the letter. It began by telling me how much longer their journey would have to take, but that it was for a good cause. My heart dropped in disappointment. I had been hoping they would return home soon. But when I read the reason for the further delay, I felt my spirits lift and let out an excited cry of happiness. “What is it?” Lena asked, eagerly leaning forward. I read that part of the letter again, just to be sure, before looking at her, barely able to contain my happiness. “Are they on their way home?” She asked impatiently. “No but it is for a very wonderful reason”, I said. “Well, tell me already”, she said, almost out of patience. “I am almost dying to hear”. “Luke has found his mate!!!” I announced happily. On hearing this, Lena screamed in excitement and I could not blame her. It was the best news I had heard in a while and I was very happy that Luke had finally found his mate after waiting for so long. Judging from the calm smiles from Nana and Gaia, I could only assume that they had already known about the joyous news. “What else does the letter say?” She asked impatiently, finally recovering from her screams of excitement. I turned back to the letter, choosing to read aloud so that she could hear. “It says that she is the daughter of the Alpha of Redclaw pack”, I said, quickly reading through it with a smile. “Regan says he believes she will be a perfect match for Luke”, I said and looked up. Only for my smile to slowly disappear at the look on Lena’s face. She looked like she had seen a ghost. The happiness and excitement that were on her face only moments ago completely melting away. “What did you say?” She asked, her voice just above a whisper. I hesitated, turning to Nana who had a sad look on her face and Gaia, whose expression was as unreadable as it always was. “I said Luke’s mate is the daughter of the Alpha of Redclaw pack?” I repeated, purposely making it a question because I did not fit the life of me know what was happening. “What is the matter?” I asked. “You look as though you have seen a ghost when you were happy only moments ago”, I told her. At my words, she simply looked away. I turned back to Nana with confused eyes. “Tell me what is wrong”, I pleaded. Probably already planning to do so, she simply nodded. “You see”, she began. “We do not talk much about it, since it happened before the Blackmoon massacre”, she said. “But Luke once had an older brother”, she announced. My eyes widened in shock at the news. I had never heard about Luke’s older brother before. Gina, I had heard about, but I had heard nothing about Luke having an older brother. Nana nodded at my obvious surprise. “His name was Lane”, she continued. “He is who Luke named his wolf after”, she said. “Lane was my first grandchild and was quite older than the rest of my grandchildren”, she said, a far away look coming into her eyes. “He was his father’s favorite, it was clear for everyone to see. And his mother adored him as well. Lane was the perfect child who brought his father great pride”, she said and paused for a short while. “It was not fair to poor Luke”, she said. “His father barely ever looked his way. But Luke did not mind. He adored his brother even though he got all the attention from both of their parents. Despite knowing about the bond between Regan and Luke, their father still insisted that Lane be trained to take on the role of Beta. He wanted every good thing for Lane”, she said. “But even if he had wanted to, Luke could never hate his older brother. Whatever Luke lacked in fatherly affection, Lane made up for it. He taught him how to do everything and doted very much on his little brother. Whenever he could escape their father’s attention, Lane would take Luke into the woods for some adventure or the other”, she said, a smile coming onto her face as she recalled the memory. “It warmed my heart whenever I saw how much they loved each other”, she said as her smile slowly disappeared. “Since my son insisted that Lane train as the future Beta instead of Luke, he followed them on their travels to visit other packs as soon as he had gotten his wolf. It was on one of such occasions that they went on a visit to Redclaw pack”, she said. “There had been talk of making an alliance with them since they were one of the largest werewolf packs in the East”, she said and her eyes began to glisten. “I remember when they left that day”, she said. “I had watched the two brothers say their goodbyes. I had watched Lane promise his brother to finally teach him how to shoot a bow and arrow after he returned. I had watched him ruffle his little brother’s hair affectionately before he went to join the others”, she said, he voice turning quiet. “That was the last time we saw him alive”, she said. “He did not return”, she said as I felt a tear trail down my cheek. “Only his lifeless body did”, she whispered. Amy sniffled as she wiped at her tears, placing a small, comforting hand on Lena’s arm. Lena smiled an empty smile. “I was very young so I do not remember much of it”, she said. “I remembered Luke and his mother crying”, she said. “I remembered how my uncle could not say a word for days. No one would even tell us how he died. His mother grieved for a long time. But my uncle turned his pain and grief into anger instead, and he directed all of it at poor Luke”, she said. “I remember Nana and my uncle fighting all the time over the way he treated Luke. It was as though he wanted to turn Luke into Lane”, she shook her head slowly. “I remember that Nana took Luke from him. That was the period I grew close to Luke”, she shared. “It was not too long after that, that Blackmoon attacked”, she said. Nana shook her head sadly. “The fates must have a terrible sense of humor”, she said. “Poor Luke. My poor grandson. I cannot imagine how much turmoil he must be in. To have finally found the mate he had yearned for, only to have her be the daughter of the Alpha of the pack responsible for his brother’s death”, she said. “Forgive me, Nana”, I said carefully. “But what happened to him?” I asked. “How did he die?” It was Lena who answered. “We do not know”, she said. “None of them that went for the visit ever said what exactly had happened. No one would tell us how he died”, she said. “It remains a mystery even to this day”, she said. “I am worried about Luke”, she said after a short while and turned towards Nana and Gaia. “I am sure his mate had nothing to do with Lane’s death”, she said. “But will Luke understand that as well?” She asked. Nana gave a small smile. “You underestimate your cousin, my dear”, she said to Lena. “It is not him I am worried about”, Lena said. “It is the pain in his heart that worries me”, she said. “Pain can blind one to the beauty before them”, she said. Unconsciously, I nodded in agreement. Lena had a point. I had seen first hand, what pain could do to people. How it could change them into something unrecognizable. But something in me knew that Luke would not be like that. Luke was different. No matter the amount of pain he had been through, I was certain he would overcome it. But hearing about what Luke had been through, I could not help but feel sorry for him. Somehow, Luke had become the brother I had never had, and finding out what he had gone through when he was younger simply broke my heart. He was much stronger than I had always thought, and I had always thought Luke was one of the strongest werewolves I had ever seen. “I am sure he will make the right decision”, I said with conviction. Nana nodded her agreement. “I am sure he will”, she said and turned to Lena. “Trust in him”, she told her. “Has Luke ever disappointed you before?” She asked. Lena shook her head. “He has not”, she said. “Then he will not start now”, Nana said. Finally, Lena smiled. “I wonder what she is like?” She thought aloud. “I do too”, I said, excitedly grabbing her hand. She suddenly turned to her mate’s mother, Gaia, with wide, hopeful eyes. “You have seen her, have you not?” She asked . Gaia simply smiled. At her smile, we all eagerly turned to her. “What is she like?” I asked. Gaia took in a breath before saying. “She is a strong she-wolf and a good daughter”, she said. I was pleased to hear that. It meant she was kind. “Well, what does she look like?” Lena asked, ever impatient. “Patience, Lena”, Nana scolded softly. Lena took in a breath. “She is beautiful”, Gaia said cryptically. Everyone else was satisfied with her answer, except Lena who sat back with a silky twist to her lips.Regan’s POV Needless to say, once we had received the pledge from the Alpha of Redclaw pack, there was no reason to remain there much longer. I agreed to stay an additional two nights at their pack for Luke’s sake. I could tell that he wanted more time with his mate. However, the tables had slowly turned. While it had been Luke’s mate who seemed besotted before, Luke’s eyes now followed her everywhere like a love sick puppy. It was amusing to say the least since I had never seen him that way. Our warriors had even started to secretly tease him among themselves about how he was completely besotted with his mate. She, on the other hand, seemed to be avoiding him, even though her eyes searched for him whenever she walked into a room, only to look away when she saw him already watching her. I had written to my mate about Luke finding his mate, so that she could share the good news with Lena and Nana. However, seeing Luke and his mate simply made me miss mine so much
Jasmine’s POV I woke up that morning feeling that something was different. Not different in a bad sense but different anyway. I sat up on my bed and looked at the empty space beside me. Not a day went by where I did not miss my mate. And though we sent letters to each other, it did nothing to ease the ache of his absence. Lena had decided to wait until their return before setting a date for her mating ceremony. Although she was very excited and looked forward to it, she insisted that it would not be complete without both her brothers. There was nothing I could say to argue with that. I cleaned up and changed to join Lena at the sanctuary, where we were to meet to go for our morning run. As soon as I stepped into the sanctuary where she was seated on the fallen trunk, waiting for me, she immediately froze, a frown on her face. “What is it?” I asked, stepping closer to her in concern. “We are not alone”, she said in almost a whisper, looking attentive as though
Regan’s POV After the night I had actually conversed with Luke’s mate, I decided that she was too much like Lena to not get along famously with both Lena and my mate. She had grown noticeably closer to Luke after that night as well. She did not avoid him as she normally did and Luke looked the happiest I had seen him in years. It was almost heart breaking to tear them apart. But the day of our departure finally came. As much as I hated to, we were obligated to leave for our last destination before we could finally make our way back home. Emry, who was separated from his mother and sister for the very first time, had started to become home sick. And despite how hard he tried to hide it, it was easy for me to notice. Perhaps because I was feeling the same way as well. I could honestly not wait to return home to my mate and unborn pup, as well as Nana and Lena. I had missed them all considerably. That morning, despite my insistence that he did not have to, Alpha Zola
Jasmine’s POV I was sure I was not the only person who stared in surprise at the strange she-wolf/ witch standing before me in a robe. I knew she looked familiar, but no matter how hard I tried, I still could not place or remember why she was familiar to me. However, her saying that we were family was the last thing I had expected to hear. “I am sure I heard you wrong”, I said to her. “You did not”, she said almost immediately, that smile still in place. “You heard me right”, she said. “We are family”. The fact that she said it again left me baffled. After recovering from my speechlessness, I asked her. “How are we family?” I asked, knowing everyone else in the room was curious about the same thing. That smile on her face never wavered. “Our mothers were sisters”, she said without hesitation. “I suppose that would make us cousins”, I told her. Though I was surprised at her news, I tried my best to keep my facial expression from revealing just how surprised I rea
Regan’s POV It took us almost all day to finally get to our destination. Our last place to visit was a pack whose Alpha was an important Elder on the Werewolf Council of Elders. He was one of the oldest werewolves and Alphas alive and had been a mentor of my father when he was alive. As was expected, I sent two of my warriors ahead to request permission to enter their pack and was granted access. We were escorted by two of their warriors to their pack house where, as was customary, their Alpha and members of their pack were waiting to receive us. I remembered meeting the Alpha of Nighthowl pack when I was very young. He had visited my father and I remembered thinking how strong he looked. I had never met my grandfather or grandmother. So I had seen the way my father had treated him with obvious respect and affection and had thought he was my grandfather. When I had addressed him as such, he had laughed fondly and ruffled my hair, even as my mother apologized on my be
Jasmine’s POV At first I thought it was real, but it did not take long for me to realize, even in my subconscious, that it was a dream. The reason I realized that almost immediately was because of the familiar setting of the dream. The dream was one I had had many times. It was the only dream where I saw my mother’s face. The same dream I had time and time again. Although I had stopped having it often after coming to Regan’s pack. It was the same cabin, small and remote, surrounded by woods on every side. However, for some reason, I could already tell that this dream would be different. It would not be the usual dream I had of my last moments with my parents. Of their deaths. I stood before the family cabin, not too big in size and standing right in the midd of the woods. Just like I remembered it, trees served as a shade for it. As I walked around it towards the back, I saw my mother’s garden. I did not remember seeing the garden in my dreams before. But ther
Regan’s POV When I returned from my run, I had expected to see Luke waiting for me, as I suspected he would. What I had not expected however, was to see the Luna of Nighthowl pack waiting for me instead. I hastily pulled on my clothes after shifting behind a tree, not wanting to keep her waiting longer. “My Lady”, I said as greeting to her as I approached her. “Is there something I can do for you?” I asked, somewhat confused about her presence. She gave that affectionate smile. “Walk with me, Alpha Regan”, she said, and began to lead the way. I followed closely and fell into step beside her, putting a respectable distance between us. We walked silently for a while before she began to speak. “I was wrong”, she said all of a sudden. I turned to glance at her, confused as to what she was talking about. “Wrong about what, Luna?” I asked her. She turned to glance briefly at me before facing forward again. “I had thought you were too young to have remembered his vi
Jasmine’s POV The reality that I had found my long lost cousin was not as surprising as the fact that I had one in the first place. After getting her out of the dungeon she was locked in, I had brought her back to my house and taken her to one of the guests rooms to clean herself and change into one of my dresses. I then took her to the stream for a cool bath, one I could tell she thoroughly enjoyed, before returning to the pack house to rest. Lena had spent the remainder of that day with her mate and so, had no idea about my endeavors until she walked into our breakfast room to see my cousin seated on one of the chairs. She immediately halted in her tracks. “What is she doing here?” She asked, a look of displeasure immediately coming onto her face. “I brought her here”, I told her as I gently motioned for her to take her usual seat beside me. Reluctantly, she made her way over and sat, just as Nana and Gaia walked in. “Gaius will not be joining us this morning”, Ga
Jasmine’s POV It was a surprise to everyone at breakfast the next morning to see Luke seated to Regan’s left, and the two thoroughly engaged in conversation. I am sure Luke’s mate was surprised as well because we shared a glance of astonishment before turning back to watch our mates interact. It was as though Luke had never left. The only difference was, when before it would be very obvious that they were both mind linking the other, it had now become that they would openly speak to each other. I secretly believed they did that so that Lena could see. If she saw and was affected by it, she hid it well, keeping a blank and almoubored expression on her face and only interacting with the ladies and her mate throughout the meal. It was the bored expression that let me know that she was indeed affected. Lena was never bored. If she was, she created something to entertain herself and others. On the other had, the two friends who had obviously resolved whatever issues the
Regan’s POV It had been three days since Luke came home and I could still feel the awkwardness between us. Lena had still not relented in her mission to pretend he did not exist and for the most part, I felt sorry for him. Lady Zara was getting along famously with the ladies, who went out of their way to include her in every activity they performed. They had even taken her to their favorite place at the stream and it was clear to see that Lady Zara was thoroughly enjoying her stay in our pack. For my part, I was mostly confused. I did not know whether to have Luke perform duties around the pack, just as I normally would. But it was not the same. I did not even know if o could still refer to him as my Beta. We had not had a single meaningful conversation since his return. On one hand, his mate was the last relative of the deceased Alpha of Redclaw pack, which meant that he could take up the leadership of the pack as its Alpha if he chose to remain there with her. O
Jasmine’s POV If I had expected Lena to have forgiven Luke once she sore him, I and everyone else who had had similar thoughts were proved wrong. I had been surprised to look around and find her absent, only to return to the house to see that she had never left in the first place. I had known that Lena’s feelings had been hurt by Luke’s refusal to respond to the several letters she had sent him while he had been away. However, I had assumed that all would be forgiven once he returned home. I had assumed wrong. She had avoided seeing him all day and had remained in the privacy of her room until it was time for Supper. Then, she had emerged in all her cold beauty and proceeded to sit as far away from Luke at the dinner table in the pack house. Despite her avoidance of Luke and her ignoring of his existence, her cold treatment was never given to Luke’s mate, who she had pulled into a hug and gushed over how beautiful she was the moment Nana had introduced her. She had g
Regan’s POV It had been more than ten days since my warriors and I returned from our successful journey. I had received several letters from the Alpha and Luna of Nighthowl pack. Alpha Regan kept me informed on his progress with the Council of Elders while his Luna wrote to ask about my well being as well as that of my mate and our unborn pup. She also wrote to inform me that she had written to her distant nephew, the Alpha of Moonrock pack, and encouraged me to write to him, assuring me of his acceptance to hear of my request. After receiving that particular letter, I wasted no time in writing to the Alpha of Moonrock pack, convincing Alpha Gaiu to do the same on our behalf. He readily agreed, if for nothing else but for his mate sake, I suspected. However, despite writing and receiving letters, I had yet to receive a letter from the one person I had not realized I had wished to hear from the most. Luke. I had written and destroyed several letters I had meant to send
Jasmine’s POV Regan’s return brought a new light to my days. Once they had been welcomed and fed, each warrior returned to their respective homes. With his arm around my waist, my mate led us back to our home after our evening meal with the rest of the pack to welcome our warriors back. Mira had done an absolutely marvelous job at cooking up the most sumptuous meal for our supper. Everyone had eaten their feel and the mood was very merry. However, throughout the meal, Isla remained quiet as usual, only lightly conversing with Lena or other wise quietly watching and smiling to some antics the warriors did. Most of them were somewhat drunk and were obnoxiously loud. One thing that was clear to anyone with eyes was how much and how often most of the warriors who had returned -most of which were unmated - tried to gain Isla’s attention. At first, they had simply stared at her or passed her admiring glances. But once they started to drink, they grew bolder with trying to g
Regan’s POV Not long after we had taken our morning meal, after we had put Alpha Zolan to rest under the full moon the night before, my warriors and I were ready to continually our journey home. Lady Zara came to bid us farewell, expressing her gratitude for our presence and assistance. And though she did not say it, I could see her gratitude for me allowing Luke remain with her. I waved away her thanks, taking her hand and bowing over it before bidding her farewell. Then I turned to Luke. Our goodbye was a very casual affair as we both knew each other well enough to know that we did not want to get affectionate or create a scene. So we limited our goodbye to a nod and a brief handshake and patting of shoulders. As I turned around and began to walk away to join our warriors who were already gathered and waiting with our horses and supplies for our return home, I caught sight of Emry break away from the group and run past me to Luke. I did not turn around to watch what
Jasmine’s POV When I received another letter from Regan soon after the one telling me about his journey home, I knew it was not good news. The ladies and I were seated in Lena’s room, taking a much needed break from our daily activities when I received the letter. As I tore it open and began to read, I could feel the curious silence that took over the space. Disappointment settled in my stomach when I heard that their journey home had been delayed once more. But when I heard the reason, the feeling of disappointment instantly changed to that of concern and worry. As I finished reading the letter, I lifted my head to face the three pair of eyes already on me, no that eager to hear the news. “Their journey has been further delayed”, I announced. Both Lena and Amy sighed in disappearing but Isla did not look the least upset or even affected about the news. I could not blame her, it was impossible to miss people you had never even met. She did rest a sympathetic hand o
Regan’s POV No matter how eager I was to go home, I did not have it in me to deny Luke’s request to see his mate one more time before we went home. After all, it was still on our path home and would cost us no major discomfort or set back. That had been the right choice to make, for as we approached the entrance into the pack, a white cloth was spread across the entrance. Seeing that could only mean one thing. That Alpha Zolan of the Redclaw pack had passed into the world beyond. Upon seeing this, Luke pushed his horse to go faster, disregarding the normal protocol and I did not have it in me to stop him. I understood how he felt. He had thought only of his mate. I followed closely behind him, and once their pack warriors saw that the intruders were us, they did not make any further move to stop us. I watched as Lady Zara come out of the pack house alongside other pack members. Upon seeing Luke hastily dismounting from his horse, she ran towards him and straigh
Jasmine’s POV Considering how worried I had been about her being accepted into my pack, Isla had fit in quite well. She and Lena had finally started to get along, seeing that they had some things in common. I would even go as far as saying that they had become close friends. Well, as close as one could be as a friend to someone who was used to being alone and valued her alone time over all else. Isla and Lena could not be more different if they were light and day. With Isla’s cool beauty and reserved demeanor, and Lena’s bright attitude and attractive features, they were very different. But somehow, thanks to efforts from mostly Lena who was determined to find something in common with my cousin, they had become good friends. Isla still disappeared to my garden or Nana’s garden whenever Lena became too much for her to cope with, but other than that, she seemed to have gotten used to Lena’s company and even seemed to have grown fond of her. Nana and Gaia had also gro
