Jasmine’s POV
I had just returned from my usual morning runs with Lena. She still could not get used to the fact that I had a wolf and her dreams of going on runs with me were being fulfilled. She also could not get over how beautiful she said Snow was. Snow had instantly taking a liking to Lena’s wolf, as I never doubted she would. And although I knew Snow was much faster, she always kept a pace that she knew Lena’s wolf could keep up with whenever we ran. We had just returned from washing up at the stream after our run when Amy ran up to join us. “Luna!” She called, panting for breath from her run. She still refused to call me by my name no matter how many times I had urged her to do so. “There’s a letter”, she said, still panting for breath. “From the Alpha”, she finally managed to get out. On hearing this, I grabbed her hand excitedly and began to pull her into another run. As she opened her mouth to protest, probably to say she could not run any longer, Lena scooped her into her arms and we broke into a run, laughing all the way. I was not worried about Amy being too big or heavy for Lena to easily carry, knowing about her werewolf strength. We raced to our house and entered through the door, still laughing from our race. Gaia and Nana were seated on chairs in the parlor when we walked in. As Lena placed Amy down so that she could stand, I instantly headed towards Nana to kiss her cheek and receive her usual heart warming kisses in return. “Good morning, Gaia”, I greeted, reaching for the letter on the table I knew had been placed there for me. “Good morning, Jasmine”, she greeted in return to while Lena kissed both Nana and her, receiving kisses in return. Since Gaia was the mother of her mate, it was normal that she greeted her with kisses. Amy simply bowed to both women as greeting, before moving to sit beside Lena, who put an arm around her and pulled her close. I sat down to open the letter and was greeted with silence. Everyone waited for me as I went through the contents of the letter. It began by telling me how much longer their journey would have to take, but that it was for a good cause. My heart dropped in disappointment. I had been hoping they would return home soon. But when I read the reason for the further delay, I felt my spirits lift and let out an excited cry of happiness. “What is it?” Lena asked, eagerly leaning forward. I read that part of the letter again, just to be sure, before looking at her, barely able to contain my happiness. “Are they on their way home?” She asked impatiently. “No but it is for a very wonderful reason”, I said. “Well, tell me already”, she said, almost out of patience. “I am almost dying to hear”. “Luke has found his mate!!!” I announced happily. On hearing this, Lena screamed in excitement and I could not blame her. It was the best news I had heard in a while and I was very happy that Luke had finally found his mate after waiting for so long. Judging from the calm smiles from Nana and Gaia, I could only assume that they had already known about the joyous news. “What else does the letter say?” She asked impatiently, finally recovering from her screams of excitement. I turned back to the letter, choosing to read aloud so that she could hear. “It says that she is the daughter of the Alpha of Redclaw pack”, I said, quickly reading through it with a smile. “Regan says he believes she will be a perfect match for Luke”, I said and looked up. Only for my smile to slowly disappear at the look on Lena’s face. She looked like she had seen a ghost. The happiness and excitement that were on her face only moments ago completely melting away. “What did you say?” She asked, her voice just above a whisper. I hesitated, turning to Nana who had a sad look on her face and Gaia, whose expression was as unreadable as it always was. “I said Luke’s mate is the daughter of the Alpha of Redclaw pack?” I repeated, purposely making it a question because I did not fit the life of me know what was happening. “What is the matter?” I asked. “You look as though you have seen a ghost when you were happy only moments ago”, I told her. At my words, she simply looked away. I turned back to Nana with confused eyes. “Tell me what is wrong”, I pleaded. Probably already planning to do so, she simply nodded. “You see”, she began. “We do not talk much about it, since it happened before the Blackmoon massacre”, she said. “But Luke once had an older brother”, she announced. My eyes widened in shock at the news. I had never heard about Luke’s older brother before. Gina, I had heard about, but I had heard nothing about Luke having an older brother. Nana nodded at my obvious surprise. “His name was Lane”, she continued. “He is who Luke named his wolf after”, she said. “Lane was my first grandchild and was quite older than the rest of my grandchildren”, she said, a far away look coming into her eyes. “He was his father’s favorite, it was clear for everyone to see. And his mother adored him as well. Lane was the perfect child who brought his father great pride”, she said and paused for a short while. “It was not fair to poor Luke”, she said. “His father barely ever looked his way. But Luke did not mind. He adored his brother even though he got all the attention from both of their parents. Despite knowing about the bond between Regan and Luke, their father still insisted that Lane be trained to take on the role of Beta. He wanted every good thing for Lane”, she said. “But even if he had wanted to, Luke could never hate his older brother. Whatever Luke lacked in fatherly affection, Lane made up for it. He taught him how to do everything and doted very much on his little brother. Whenever he could escape their father’s attention, Lane would take Luke into the woods for some adventure or the other”, she said, a smile coming onto her face as she recalled the memory. “It warmed my heart whenever I saw how much they loved each other”, she said as her smile slowly disappeared. “Since my son insisted that Lane train as the future Beta instead of Luke, he followed them on their travels to visit other packs as soon as he had gotten his wolf. It was on one of such occasions that they went on a visit to Redclaw pack”, she said. “There had been talk of making an alliance with them since they were one of the largest werewolf packs in the East”, she said and her eyes began to glisten. “I remember when they left that day”, she said. “I had watched the two brothers say their goodbyes. I had watched Lane promise his brother to finally teach him how to shoot a bow and arrow after he returned. I had watched him ruffle his little brother’s hair affectionately before he went to join the others”, she said, he voice turning quiet. “That was the last time we saw him alive”, she said. “He did not return”, she said as I felt a tear trail down my cheek. “Only his lifeless body did”, she whispered. Amy sniffled as she wiped at her tears, placing a small, comforting hand on Lena’s arm. Lena smiled an empty smile. “I was very young so I do not remember much of it”, she said. “I remembered Luke and his mother crying”, she said. “I remembered how my uncle could not say a word for days. No one would even tell us how he died. His mother grieved for a long time. But my uncle turned his pain and grief into anger instead, and he directed all of it at poor Luke”, she said. “I remember Nana and my uncle fighting all the time over the way he treated Luke. It was as though he wanted to turn Luke into Lane”, she shook her head slowly. “I remember that Nana took Luke from him. That was the period I grew close to Luke”, she shared. “It was not too long after that, that Blackmoon attacked”, she said. Nana shook her head sadly. “The fates must have a terrible sense of humor”, she said. “Poor Luke. My poor grandson. I cannot imagine how much turmoil he must be in. To have finally found the mate he had yearned for, only to have her be the daughter of the Alpha of the pack responsible for his brother’s death”, she said. “Forgive me, Nana”, I said carefully. “But what happened to him?” I asked. “How did he die?” It was Lena who answered. “We do not know”, she said. “None of them that went for the visit ever said what exactly had happened. No one would tell us how he died”, she said. “It remains a mystery even to this day”, she said. “I am worried about Luke”, she said after a short while and turned towards Nana and Gaia. “I am sure his mate had nothing to do with Lane’s death”, she said. “But will Luke understand that as well?” She asked. Nana gave a small smile. “You underestimate your cousin, my dear”, she said to Lena. “It is not him I am worried about”, Lena said. “It is the pain in his heart that worries me”, she said. “Pain can blind one to the beauty before them”, she said. Unconsciously, I nodded in agreement. Lena had a point. I had seen first hand, what pain could do to people. How it could change them into something unrecognizable. But something in me knew that Luke would not be like that. Luke was different. No matter the amount of pain he had been through, I was certain he would overcome it. But hearing about what Luke had been through, I could not help but feel sorry for him. Somehow, Luke had become the brother I had never had, and finding out what he had gone through when he was younger simply broke my heart. He was much stronger than I had always thought, and I had always thought Luke was one of the strongest werewolves I had ever seen. “I am sure he will make the right decision”, I said with conviction. Nana nodded her agreement. “I am sure he will”, she said and turned to Lena. “Trust in him”, she told her. “Has Luke ever disappointed you before?” She asked. Lena shook her head. “He has not”, she said. “Then he will not start now”, Nana said. Finally, Lena smiled. “I wonder what she is like?” She thought aloud. “I do too”, I said, excitedly grabbing her hand. She suddenly turned to her mate’s mother, Gaia, with wide, hopeful eyes. “You have seen her, have you not?” She asked . Gaia simply smiled. At her smile, we all eagerly turned to her. “What is she like?” I asked. Gaia took in a breath before saying. “She is a strong she-wolf and a good daughter”, she said. I was pleased to hear that. It meant she was kind. “Well, what does she look like?” Lena asked, ever impatient. “Patience, Lena”, Nana scolded softly. Lena took in a breath. “She is beautiful”, Gaia said cryptically. Everyone else was satisfied with her answer, except Lena who sat back with a silky twist to her lips.Jasmine’s POV. “Please don’t say that”, I whimpered as I stared at my mate in shock, sure that if I had a wolf, she would be howling in pain at the words that were coming out of his mouth. “I’m an Alpha”, he said. “An Alpha of one of the strongest packs in our world. It would be seen as the ultimate mark of weakness to have a mate that is without rank and a wolf”, he told me, looking me over with his decision clear in his eyes. I looked away and resisted the urge to curl into a ball and sob, instead distracting myself with anything that came to mind. That was probably why I blurted out the first question that came to my mind. “How did you know?” I asked, staring down at my feet in shame. “Bianca told me”, he said and my head whipped up so fast since that wasn’t the answer I had been expecting. “What?” I asked in surprise. “How does she know that?” Before he could respond however, the snotty voice that belonged to the witch in question came from the open door behind me.
Jasmine’s POV. “Jasmine!” I heard a familiar voice call through the darkness. “Jasmine, you must wake up”, the voice whispered urgently even as hands jerked me awake, pulling me from the darkness. I opened my eyes to the face of my mother, a fear in her eyes that mirrored the urgency in her voice. “Mama?” I called out softly in confusion, still dazed from sleep. “Get up”, she urged. “Quickly!” Even as she spoke, she moved away from me to rummage through the bag she had sewn for me out of the animal skin father had skinned. “We do not have time”, she said, moving about the room and putting things into the bag before closing it. “Come”, she said and scooped me up from my bed and into her arms. She held onto the bag with one hand and hurried through our humble house and out the back door which led into the dark woods. There, my father stood. There was a dead wolf a small distance away from me that my mother turned my head away from seeing properly through the darkness
Jasmine’s POV The darkness of the hole gave way to another darkness that soon engulfed me. Howling sounds pulled me from the darkness this time and when I came to, I looked around and realised that I was in the same room my mate had all but rejected me in. I was still sprawled out on the cold floor and from the tight muscle pains that radiated all over my body and the cold I could feel in my bones, I knew I had been passed out for a while. It had been a dream. A dream I hadn’t had in a very long time. One that felt more like a memory than a dream but I could never be too sure. The only thing that made me think it was not just a dream was the fact that my guardian was a man with a scar under his left eye. Other than that, I had no clue on anything else. I shifted from my position, a groan escaping my cold, chapped lips as I brought myself to a sit on the cold floor. I could still hear the several howls that had pulled me out of my unconsciousness. The clear difference
Unknown POV He picked up another scroll that laid beside the books and papers stacked on the desk he sat behind and read through another report from some warriors on an errand to an ally pack up north. He scowled at the contents written in it, still ignoring the presence of the three men who stood before him on the other side of the table. Having read enough of the scroll’s contents, he tossed it aside and turned his scowl to the men who waited silently. He regarded each of them without a word, knowing his silence would only make them grow nervous and fearful. That was his intent after all. He finally decided to break his silence when the youngest of the three began to tremble. “You said you had important information for me regarding Blackmoon”, he said, biting back his smirk at their fear. “Yes, Alpha”, the older, more muscular one said immediately. “Then tell me”, he urged. The three exchanged looks before the trembling youngster took a step forward.
Jasmine’s POV I couldn’t muster the ability to care that I was now sprawled out on the floor of the wooden cabin I had been unceremoniously dumped in two days before. I had been brought here after my mate had pronounced my sentence and I had cried my eyes out. As I laid out on the cold floor, allowing the cold to seep into my bones and ignoring the second plate of oatmeal and dried fish that had been brought earlier by one of the guards of my cabin prison, I discovered an emotion that was though strange, yet comforting. That emotion was anger. I had gone through several emotions since being thrown into the cabin. The first was pain. Literal pain from the injuries I had sustained while being rough handled and treated like a criminal, and emotional pain from all that I had gone through. The second was shock because I could not believe that it was all really happening. I wished I was evil enough to have done what I was accused of but I was not. The next was
Jasmine’s POV. As soon as the door to the study slammed shut behind me, I breathed a sign of relief. I could feel my aching shoulders relax and felt such ease being away from the scorching gaze of the Alpha. Looking forward to where Luke now stood with a teasing glint in his hazel eyes, no doubt seeing my relief, I felt my shoulders tense once again. The fact that the Alpha was more scary didn’t mean I wasn’t still scared of Luke. “Believe me when I say you have less to fear from me”, he said as if reading my mind. “I will not hurt you if you do not give me a reason to”, he added turning away from me to start walking down a hallway. Since he was the only one I could somewhat trust to not harm me as long as I behaved, I hurried after him, making sure to walk behind him with my eyes downcast to avoid the stares from any werewolves we came across. He led me out the way we had come and into the gaze of the fully risen Sun. He took the opposite path from the woods and led me dow
Jasmine’s POV. Just as Luke had said, a red haired woman had come to fetch me before night fall. A knock on the door pulled me from the arms of the peaceful sleep I had been in. It took a moment to gather my thoughts and remember where I was when I finally opened my eyes. Biting down on a groan, I brought my aching body to a sitting position, then pushed myself to stand and make my way to the door. I opened it to see a pretty red haired woman with freckled cheeks standing before me with a smile. She looked to be a bit older than me and her smiling brown eyes showed a warmth I was not familiar with receiving. “My name is Lena”, she said. “It’s short for Elena. May I come in?” She asked almost immediately and it took me a moment to respond. “Yes, you may”, I said, opening the door wider to let her in. I was still in a state between shock and disbelief and automatically shut the door after she made her way in. It was as I turned around to look at her that I noticed sh
Jasmine’s POV. Elena’s warmth had a way of wrapping itself around one and making them feel safe. That was how I felt from the moment I had met her. And that was why I confided in her about things I had never told anyone, even if we had just met. While she tended to my wounds, we talked. I told her a little more about my life at Blackmoon pack and she was more angry at the treatment I had been dealt before sympathizing with my plight. Then she began to tell me about her pack. It was called the Midnight Wolves Pack and it was a big one. As she spoke, I could hear the pride in her voice when she talked about her pack, especially her Alpha. It was clear that the scary Alpha, or Alpha Regan, as Elena had informed me, was highly respected and admired from the way she spoke of him. She shared that after the attack that had killed most of their pack members, including their former Alpha and Luna several years ago, Alpha Regan had been the one to restore the pack to its full

Regan’s POV By the time a member of Redclaw pack came to escort us to their dining room, Luke had come to terms with the fact that he would have to face his mate, whether he liked it or not. I knew he was eager for answers to finally uncover the mystery behind his brother’s death. And so was I. But unlike Luke, I had a greater desire than that of getting answers. That desire was to see Luke finally happy, with his mate. I had always been able to read people easily, or at least feel their aura. From just our one meeting, I could tell that Luke’s mate, Zara, was not an evil person. Simply a protective and suspicious one. As we arrived at the dining room, we were ushered to our seats. Seated at the head chair of the dining table was who I knew was the Alpha of the pack, simply because of the aura I perceived from him. He looked frail and I could easily tell that he would not last too much longer. His daughter was seated to his right, and other ranked members of his p
Jasmine’s POV Since I had no choice in the matter, I took amusement from wherever I could. At the moment, the amusement I derived from the expression of disbelief on the face of my former mate was one that brought me immense satisfaction indeed. He remained standing in the same spot since he had seen me, with his Beta beside him. “So it is true then?” He asked again, the disbelief suddenly giving way to an emotion I did not quickly realize. “She has already said that it is”, Lena replied hotly from where she way seated. He finally broke his gaze away from mine to shoot her a heated glare. “And who might you be?” He asked with a threatening growl. Before I could open my mouth to warn him to not speak that way to her, her mate, whose hand remained possessively on her shoulder, spoke. “She is my mate”, Alpha Gaius said, the warning clear in his tone and the brief flickering of his eyes that warned that his wolf was not so far from the surface, ready to attack any threat
Regan’s POV It did not take us long to arrive at Redclaw pack once my request to be accepted into the pack was granted. A part of me had thought it would have been rejected and was quite satisfied with that since it meant Luke would be spared the emotional torture the meeting might turn out to be for him. All the same, he rode beside me with a straight face, obviously deep in his thoughts that I did not dare intrude upon. A part of me suddenly wished we had not come with horses. It meant our quest would have been faster in a sense. We could have run in our wolf forms to arrive at the packs we had to visit. However, three concerns had made me decide otherwise. The first was that we had planned to visit several packs, which meant we had to come with a lot of gifts for each pack we visited, hence why we had to bring along two carts. Running in our wolf form meant we would have had to carry all those tributes and gifts and would have left us exhausted very quickly, especi
Jasmine’s POV After my judgment on the mother and daughter who had lied against Amy, I noticed that members of my pack began to treat me differently. And not in a bad way. If they had treated me with anything close to respect, due to the fact that I was their Alpha’s mate, they now treated me with respect and admiration. Lena had ensured that my sentences on the mother and daughter were carried out. More than anyone, she had been proud of how I had handled the case and took great joy in narrating the occurrence in great detail to Nana and Mari, who had been disappointed that they had not been present to witness the even for themselves. Amy and Emry’s mother, who worked closely alongside Nana at the healing house was full of thanks, even going as far as shedding a few tears, to express her gratitude for how I had come to her daughter’s rescue. Like her daughter, she was a quiet she-wolf who had lost her husband years ago and worked at the healing house to provide for her
Regan’s POV After getting Stonghold pack’s pledge, we visited six more packs that gave similar responses, all pledging to come when we called. Since each pack we visited insisted we dined with them and even spend the night before continuing our journey, as was customary hospitality among werewolves, I could not turn them down without being disrespectful. Especially since I had come to seek their aid. This simply meant that our journey took longer than originally planned. I had to write to Nana to tell her that all was well with us after receiving several spelled messages from her and Gaia, all enquiring about our well being. I knew that Jasmine would be the most worried of everyone back at home. And that was the last thing I wanted, to worry or upset her in any well. It would not be good for both her and our pup. As we rested in the rooms provided for us by the current pack we were visiting, a knock on my door drew my attention from the map I had been observing. I immediat
Jasmine’s POV It was hard to cope with Regan and Luke’s absence. Especially that of my mate. I prayed so much more than I usually did for the success of their mission and for their safe return home. Concerning things at the pack, I did not have much to worry about. Regan had done an incredible work of preparing all that I would need in his absence. As he had earlier said before leaving, his Gamma handled the day to day routine and managed quite well, only coming to me when my guidance or authority was required. And I was not required much. With everything else, Nana and Lena never left my side. Always ready with help or advice whenever I would need it. Their presence made the absence of my mate bearable. Gaia had decided to check on me and the pup each day, to know if there was any immediate threat against us and how to avert it. It eased my worries each time she told me everything was well. Although I wondered if she would tell me if all was not. It was more l
Regan’s POV Since it was my first time being away from her, I found it somewhat difficult to adapt to the absence of my mate. Rage’s whining was not helping. He felt her absence more than I did since he felt my emotions more intensely. Even though he understood the reason we had to go, it did not stop him from sulking and whining at the absence of our mate. A part of me wanted nothing more than to turn around and return home, but it would be the wrong decision to make and I knew that. So we rode on, keeping a steady pace and rode towards the opposite path from where Blackmoon pack was. The fact that we took an entirely different route simply to avoid them spoke a lot of our hatred for them. We headed towards the next closest pack to us, a pack whose Alpha was an old friend of my father’s. I sent two of my warriors ahead to announce our arrival, and not too long after, they came back with news of the Alpha’s acceptance to have us in his pack. When we met up with a
Jasmine’s POV The day I had been dreading finally came. I woke up once again to an empty bed. Since that was not anything new, I simply readied myself for the day before making my way out of the room. I joined Lena in the kitchen of our house and together, we prepared breakfast. Nana was absent, as she usually was due to Gaia’s presence, and Regan’s Gamma and his mate had moved out to live in a small cabin of their own not to far away from the pack house after having their pup. Since our house had several more rooms, Gaia and Alpha Gaius were asked to move in since they were going to be in our pack longer than they had initially planned. Lena was thrilled with this development, but however pleased I was for her, I could not shake the suspicion that Regan had prepared it all to have me protected at all times. It felt like he had placed people everywhere to protect me in his absence and as much as I loved and appreciated his protective nature, there was only so much e
