Regan’s POV

By the time a member of Redclaw pack came to escort us to their dining room, Luke had come to terms with the fact that he would have to face his mate, whether he liked it or not.

I knew he was eager for answers to finally uncover the mystery behind his brother’s death. And so was I.

But unlike Luke, I had a greater desire than that of getting answers.

That desire was to see Luke finally happy, with his mate.

I had always been able to read people easily, or at least feel their aura.

From just our one meeting, I could tell that Luke’s mate, Zara, was not an evil person. Simply a protective and suspicious one.

As we arrived at the dining room, we were ushered to our seats.

Seated at the head chair of the dining table was who I knew was the Alpha of the pack, simply because of the aura I perceived from him.

He looked frail and I could easily tell that he would not last too much longer.

His daughter was seated to his right, and other ranked members of his pack alongside the sides of them.

I was led to the head chair on the other end of the table with Luke on my right and other members of my pack seated as well.

However, I did not sit yet, and since I did not, my warriors remained standing.

It was not customary for another Alpha to wait to be given permission before he could be seated. But it was the only way to pay respect to this Alpha, who I knew did not have much time any longer.

He watched me for a while, recognizing my action for the act of respect that it was. It seemed a few of his ranked members understood as well, along side his daughter, whose eyes began to glisten before she turned away to hide her face from view.

He gave a slow nod before his raspy voice spoke.

“Alpha Regan”, he said. “Please sit”.

At his acceptance, I bowed briefly, causing my warriors to boy lowly, before I took my seat with them.

Knowing he could not speak for long, I led the conversation, even as our food was being served.

“I have not had the honor of meeting you before”, I said. “I am glad to finally do so”, I told him.

He held my gaze, even as he leaned into his chair.

“Given the history between our packs in the past”, he said, with a glance at Luke who, he could no doubt see, had a striking resemblance with his late brother. “I doubt that you would have had any reason to come”, he said, not beating about the bush.

“As I was quite young when that incident took place”, I said. “I cannot say much on the matter, despite having many questions”, I admitted.

He looked closely at me, even as his daughter pushed a glass of water closer for him.

I noticed then that, unlike ever else, he had not been served food.

“Then you will understand that this is a surprise indeed”, he rasped. “When I received your letter, I could not help but wonder if this was a quest for revenge”, he said bluntly.

I had not touched my food despite nodding to my warriors to do so.

Though they acted like it, I had already heard Luke mind link them to not eat the food until they have received his go ahead.

“And yet, you let us into your pack?” I wondered aloud.

He gave a weak shrug of his shoulder.

“I am a curious wolf by nature”, he said before turning his eyes from me to Luke. “You can eat the food”, he said to him. “I assure you, it is not poisoned”, he said, and I refused to allow my surprise show, even as his gaze turned back to me. “I see no gain in any of your deaths”, he said. “You are my guests and will be treated as nothing less”, he said, turning back to Luke. “Especially as my daughter’s mate is a part of your company”, he said.

I felt Luke tense before I glanced at him.

He had a death grip on the spoon in his hand, and I knew it took more control to keep the spoon from snapping then to control his emotions.

‘Calm down, Luke’, I mind linked him, aware that he had not taken so much as a look at the weak Alpha for fear of what he might do at the sight of him.

‘He means no disrespect or mockery’, I told him. ‘See it for yourself’, I urged.

I knew that Alpha Zolan watched me, even as I mind linked Luke. I knew he could see how tightly Luke was holding on to his control. But he said nothing.

Simply waited until Luke lifted his head and looked at him for the first time.

At the sight of him, I felt the rage in Luke’s body slowly ease away, even as his tight-enough-to-hurt-it-but-not-break-it grip on the spoon loosened.

I knew he saw what I saw.

A wise werewolf who did not have much longer to live. But no evil, no killer.

As Luke turned back to his plate and took his first bite, ordering our warriors to eat, I knew he had seen what I had.

Alpha Zolan had not been the one to kill Luke’s brother.

Luke was a lot more observant than I was, and I believed he had inherited an ounce of Nana’s powers. He could read people accurately with just one look.

Alpha Zolan in return, watched Luke closely as if wanting to see beyond him.

I knew his observation was making Luke uneasy, so I decided to shift his focus back to me.

“Yes”, I said to his earlier statement of Luke being his daughter’s mate. “We found out earlier upon our arrival”, I said, with a glance at his daughter who hardly ever took her eyes off her father.

Her worry and love for him was clear as day to see.

“And as for revenge”, I continued, looking back at him. “That is not why we are here”, I told him. “On the contrary, we are here to seek your help”, I announced.

His daughter’s head whipped around so fast to shoot me a suspicious look that I could not help but smile at.

“You wish to seek our help?” Alpha Zolan asked, watching me closely.

I nodded and took a deep breath before launching into my tale.

“I am sure you have heard of the prophecy”, I said. “I had always believed it to be a tale concocted to preserve hope in the hearts of the werewolves, but I was wrong”, I told him. “I lost my mate as a very young wolf during the attack of Blackmoon pack”, I said, and saw the pain of understanding in his eyes. He too had lost his mate. “ I had given up on ever finding another before I met my current mate”, I said.

The look of suspicion had started to disappear from Luke’s mate’s face, as she listened to my story.

“She was a wolf that did not have any access to her wolf”, I told them. “She was rejected by her own mate for being weak. But she was not weak”, I said. “I knew she special from the moment I saw her”, I told them, already seeing her in my mind. “And my wolf would not let me be without her”, I said with a smile.

A weak smile appeared on Alpha Zolan’s lips.

“I asked her to be my mate, and she agreed”, I smiled. “Not too long after our mating ceremony, we completed the mating ritual, only to have my mate transform for the first time”, I shared, aware of the rapt attention from the werewolves of Redclaw pack.

“She had always had these birthmarks on her back, but once she shifted, they turned into markings”. I let that sink in before continuing. “My mate had shifted into a pure white wolf with the markings of the Royal Bloodline on the back of her wolf”, I said.

I heard gasps of disbelief and even noticed Alpha Zolan and his daughter’s shocked expressions.

“Impossible”, one of his ranked members said.

I shot him a glare.

“I assure you”, I said. “I am not in the habit of riding so far away from my pack, to request the assistance of every pack I come across so that they can fulfil their duty to the Royal Bloodline, simply for the amusement it brings”, I said.

He bowed his head immediately.

I turned back to Alpha Zolan.

“If you are aware of the prophecy, then you must be aware of the Vampire King”, I said to him.

He gave a weak nod and I went on.

“Gaia of Whitestorm pack was summoned”, I told him. “She is at my pack as we speak alongside her son, the Alpha Gaius of Whitestorm pack. She is the reason I am on this journey”, I said and leaned forward. “The Vampire King is aware of my mate’s existence, and he plans to kill her before she can give birth to my son”, I told him, my intense gaze locked in his.

I saw the understanding of my words dawn on him.

“You are saying your mate is already pregnant?” Zara asked from beside her father, drawing my gaze to her.

I nodded.

“He will try to kill my son before he is born”, I told them. “He will try to stop the prophecy from being fulfilled. He will try to take them from me”, I leaned back to rest on my chair. “But I will die first before I see that happen”, I said before looking around at them. “I ask that you do your duty to the Royal Bloodline”, I said. “That you keep the pledge of your fathers and answer in defense of the Royal family, when I call”, I requested.

He was silent for a long time.

They all were.

It was not everyday one heard that a long, almost forgotten prophecy was coming to fulfillment.

Alpha Zolan finally spoke.

“I fear I cannot be of help to you”, he said, and I felt my heart drop.

Redclaw was one of the largest werewolf packs in the East. Despite what I had told Luke, their numbers would mean we stood a good chance.

“As you can see”, he went on. “I do not have much longer to remain in this world”, he told me before turning to look lovingly at his daughter. “But my heir is strong and wise”, he said as her eyes began to glisten. “I have only one wish before I go”, he said, turning back to me. “That my daughter be happy and cherished”, he said and looked at Luke.

“If you will give me your word that you will take care of my daughter”, he told him and turned back to me. “Then you have mine on this day, that whenever you call, Redclaw pack will answer”, he said. “Whether I am here or not”.

I saw Zara grab a hold of her father’s hand, her eyes glistening but no tears falling.

She would indeed make a good mate for Luke.

I turned to Luke.

I could not give my word, it was not mine to give.

It was Luke he had asked, not me, so I waited in silence alongside everyone else for the what Luke would say.

He spoke after a short while.

“You have my word”, he said. “On this day, Alpha Zolan, I promise to protect, love and cherish your daughter. I will do all I can to make her happy, for as long as I live”, he said, turning to look at his mate with complete adoration.

That had taken much less than I had originally thought it would.

She smiled as her father nodded.

“Then it is settled”, Alpha Zolan said and motioned for us to continue our meal.

‘That did not take long’ I teased Luke through our mind link. ‘I thought you wanted nothing to do with her’.

He did not respond, simply shot me a glare and turned to watch his mate as she ate.

Jasmine’s POV. “Please don’t say that”, I whimpered as I stared at my mate in shock, sure that if I had a wolf, she would be howling in pain at the words that were coming out of his mouth. “I’m an Alpha”, he said. “An Alpha of one of the strongest packs in our world. It would be seen as the ultimate mark of weakness to have a mate that is without rank and a wolf”, he told me, looking me over with his decision clear in his eyes. I looked away and resisted the urge to curl into a ball and sob, instead distracting myself with anything that came to mind. That was probably why I blurted out the first question that came to my mind. “How did you know?” I asked, staring down at my feet in shame. “Bianca told me”, he said and my head whipped up so fast since that wasn’t the answer I had been expecting. “What?” I asked in surprise. “How does she know that?” Before he could respond however, the snotty voice that belonged to the witch in question came from the open door behind me.

Jasmine’s POV. “Jasmine!” I heard a familiar voice call through the darkness. “Jasmine, you must wake up”, the voice whispered urgently even as hands jerked me awake, pulling me from the darkness. I opened my eyes to the face of my mother, a fear in her eyes that mirrored the urgency in her voice. “Mama?” I called out softly in confusion, still dazed from sleep. “Get up”, she urged. “Quickly!” Even as she spoke, she moved away from me to rummage through the bag she had sewn for me out of the animal skin father had skinned. “We do not have time”, she said, moving about the room and putting things into the bag before closing it. “Come”, she said and scooped me up from my bed and into her arms. She held onto the bag with one hand and hurried through our humble house and out the back door which led into the dark woods. There, my father stood. There was a dead wolf a small distance away from me that my mother turned my head away from seeing properly through the darkness

Jasmine’s POV The darkness of the hole gave way to another darkness that soon engulfed me. Howling sounds pulled me from the darkness this time and when I came to, I looked around and realised that I was in the same room my mate had all but rejected me in. I was still sprawled out on the cold floor and from the tight muscle pains that radiated all over my body and the cold I could feel in my bones, I knew I had been passed out for a while. It had been a dream. A dream I hadn’t had in a very long time. One that felt more like a memory than a dream but I could never be too sure. The only thing that made me think it was not just a dream was the fact that my guardian was a man with a scar under his left eye. Other than that, I had no clue on anything else. I shifted from my position, a groan escaping my cold, chapped lips as I brought myself to a sit on the cold floor. I could still hear the several howls that had pulled me out of my unconsciousness. The clear difference

Unknown POV He picked up another scroll that laid beside the books and papers stacked on the desk he sat behind and read through another report from some warriors on an errand to an ally pack up north. He scowled at the contents written in it, still ignoring the presence of the three men who stood before him on the other side of the table. Having read enough of the scroll’s contents, he tossed it aside and turned his scowl to the men who waited silently. He regarded each of them without a word, knowing his silence would only make them grow nervous and fearful. That was his intent after all. He finally decided to break his silence when the youngest of the three began to tremble. “You said you had important information for me regarding Blackmoon”, he said, biting back his smirk at their fear. “Yes, Alpha”, the older, more muscular one said immediately. “Then tell me”, he urged. The three exchanged looks before the trembling youngster took a step forward.

Jasmine’s POV I couldn’t muster the ability to care that I was now sprawled out on the floor of the wooden cabin I had been unceremoniously dumped in two days before. I had been brought here after my mate had pronounced my sentence and I had cried my eyes out. As I laid out on the cold floor, allowing the cold to seep into my bones and ignoring the second plate of oatmeal and dried fish that had been brought earlier by one of the guards of my cabin prison, I discovered an emotion that was though strange, yet comforting. That emotion was anger. I had gone through several emotions since being thrown into the cabin. The first was pain. Literal pain from the injuries I had sustained while being rough handled and treated like a criminal, and emotional pain from all that I had gone through. The second was shock because I could not believe that it was all really happening. I wished I was evil enough to have done what I was accused of but I was not. The next was

Jasmine’s POV. As soon as the door to the study slammed shut behind me, I breathed a sign of relief. I could feel my aching shoulders relax and felt such ease being away from the scorching gaze of the Alpha. Looking forward to where Luke now stood with a teasing glint in his hazel eyes, no doubt seeing my relief, I felt my shoulders tense once again. The fact that the Alpha was more scary didn’t mean I wasn’t still scared of Luke. “Believe me when I say you have less to fear from me”, he said as if reading my mind. “I will not hurt you if you do not give me a reason to”, he added turning away from me to start walking down a hallway. Since he was the only one I could somewhat trust to not harm me as long as I behaved, I hurried after him, making sure to walk behind him with my eyes downcast to avoid the stares from any werewolves we came across. He led me out the way we had come and into the gaze of the fully risen Sun. He took the opposite path from the woods and led me dow

Jasmine’s POV. Just as Luke had said, a red haired woman had come to fetch me before night fall. A knock on the door pulled me from the arms of the peaceful sleep I had been in. It took a moment to gather my thoughts and remember where I was when I finally opened my eyes. Biting down on a groan, I brought my aching body to a sitting position, then pushed myself to stand and make my way to the door. I opened it to see a pretty red haired woman with freckled cheeks standing before me with a smile. She looked to be a bit older than me and her smiling brown eyes showed a warmth I was not familiar with receiving. “My name is Lena”, she said. “It’s short for Elena. May I come in?” She asked almost immediately and it took me a moment to respond. “Yes, you may”, I said, opening the door wider to let her in. I was still in a state between shock and disbelief and automatically shut the door after she made her way in. It was as I turned around to look at her that I noticed sh

Jasmine’s POV. Elena’s warmth had a way of wrapping itself around one and making them feel safe. That was how I felt from the moment I had met her. And that was why I confided in her about things I had never told anyone, even if we had just met. While she tended to my wounds, we talked. I told her a little more about my life at Blackmoon pack and she was more angry at the treatment I had been dealt before sympathizing with my plight. Then she began to tell me about her pack. It was called the Midnight Wolves Pack and it was a big one. As she spoke, I could hear the pride in her voice when she talked about her pack, especially her Alpha. It was clear that the scary Alpha, or Alpha Regan, as Elena had informed me, was highly respected and admired from the way she spoke of him. She shared that after the attack that had killed most of their pack members, including their former Alpha and Luna several years ago, Alpha Regan had been the one to restore the pack to its full

Jasmine’s POV Since I had no choice in the matter, I took amusement from wherever I could. At the moment, the amusement I derived from the expression of disbelief on the face of my former mate was one that brought me immense satisfaction indeed. He remained standing in the same spot since he had seen me, with his Beta beside him. “So it is true then?” He asked again, the disbelief suddenly giving way to an emotion I did not quickly realize. “She has already said that it is”, Lena replied hotly from where she way seated. He finally broke his gaze away from mine to shoot her a heated glare. “And who might you be?” He asked with a threatening growl. Before I could open my mouth to warn him to not speak that way to her, her mate, whose hand remained possessively on her shoulder, spoke. “She is my mate”, Alpha Gaius said, the warning clear in his tone and the brief flickering of his eyes that warned that his wolf was not so far from the surface, ready to attack any threat

Regan’s POV It did not take us long to arrive at Redclaw pack once my request to be accepted into the pack was granted. A part of me had thought it would have been rejected and was quite satisfied with that since it meant Luke would be spared the emotional torture the meeting might turn out to be for him. All the same, he rode beside me with a straight face, obviously deep in his thoughts that I did not dare intrude upon. A part of me suddenly wished we had not come with horses. It meant our quest would have been faster in a sense. We could have run in our wolf forms to arrive at the packs we had to visit. However, three concerns had made me decide otherwise. The first was that we had planned to visit several packs, which meant we had to come with a lot of gifts for each pack we visited, hence why we had to bring along two carts. Running in our wolf form meant we would have had to carry all those tributes and gifts and would have left us exhausted very quickly, especi

Jasmine’s POV After my judgment on the mother and daughter who had lied against Amy, I noticed that members of my pack began to treat me differently. And not in a bad way. If they had treated me with anything close to respect, due to the fact that I was their Alpha’s mate, they now treated me with respect and admiration. Lena had ensured that my sentences on the mother and daughter were carried out. More than anyone, she had been proud of how I had handled the case and took great joy in narrating the occurrence in great detail to Nana and Mari, who had been disappointed that they had not been present to witness the even for themselves. Amy and Emry’s mother, who worked closely alongside Nana at the healing house was full of thanks, even going as far as shedding a few tears, to express her gratitude for how I had come to her daughter’s rescue. Regan’s POV After getting Stonghold pack’s pledge, we visited six more packs that gave similar responses, all pledging to come when we called. Since each pack we visited insisted we dined with them and even spend the night before continuing our journey, as was customary hospitality among werewolves, I could not turn them down without being disrespectful. Especially since I had come to seek their aid. This simply meant that our journey took longer than originally planned. I had to write to Nana to tell her that all was well with us after receiving several spelled messages from her and Gaia, all enquiring about our well being. I knew that Jasmine would be the most worried of everyone back at home. And that was the last thing I wanted, to worry or upset her in any well. It would not be good for both her and our pup. As we rested in the rooms provided for us by the current pack we were visiting, a knock on my door drew my attention from the map I had been observing. I immediat

Jasmine’s POV It was hard to cope with Regan and Luke’s absence. Especially that of my mate. I prayed so much more than I usually did for the success of their mission and for their safe return home. Concerning things at the pack, I did not have much to worry about. Regan had done an incredible work of preparing all that I would need in his absence. As he had earlier said before leaving, his Gamma handled the day to day routine and managed quite well, only coming to me when my guidance or authority was required. And I was not required much. With everything else, Nana and Lena never left my side. Always ready with help or advice whenever I would need it. Their presence made the absence of my mate bearable. Gaia had decided to check on me and the pup each day, to know if there was any immediate threat against us and how to avert it. It eased my worries each time she told me everything was well. Regan’s POV Since it was my first time being away from her, I found it somewhat difficult to adapt to the absence of my mate. Rage’s whining was not helping. Even though he understood the reason we had to go, it did not stop him from sulking and whining at the absence of our mate. A part of me wanted nothing more than to turn around and return home, but it would be the wrong decision to make and I knew that. So we rode on, keeping a steady pace and rode towards the opposite path from where Blackmoon pack was. The fact that we took an entirely different route simply to avoid them spoke a lot of our hatred for them. We headed towards the next closest pack to us, a pack whose Alpha was an old friend of my father’s. Nana was absent, as she usually was due to Gaia’s presence, and Regan’s Gamma and his mate had moved out to live in a small cabin of their own not to far away from the pack house after having their pup. Since our house had several more rooms, Gaia and Alpha Gaius were asked to move in since they were going to be in our pack longer than they had initially planned.
