Regan’s POV

When I returned from my run, I had expected to see Luke waiting for me, as I suspected he would.

What I had not expected however, was to see the Luna of Nighthowl pack waiting for me instead.

I hastily pulled on my clothes after shifting behind a tree, not wanting to keep her waiting longer.

“My Lady”, I said as greeting to her as I approached her. “Is there something I can do for you?” I asked, somewhat confused about her presence.

She gave that affectionate smile.

“Walk with me, Alpha Regan”, she said, and began to lead the way.

I followed closely and fell into step beside her, putting a respectable distance between us.

We walked silently for a while before she began to speak.

“I was wrong”, she said all of a sudden.

I turned to glance at her, confused as to what she was talking about.

“Wrong about what, Luna?” I asked her.

She turned to glance briefly at me before facing forward again.

“I had thought you were too young to have remembered his visit”, she said. “The first time my mate had come to your pack”, she clarified. “I had assumed that you had been too young to still recall his visit”, she said.

I contemplated on the wisdom of being honest with the Luna, and decided that I had nothing to loose in being truthful.

“It is not that I recall his visit so well, my Lady”, I told her as we walked. “It is that I recall my father’s reaction to his visit”, I confessed.

She remained quiet to allow me continue.

“I remember some things about my father even up until now”, I told her. “And one of the things I remember is seeing him so joyful over your mate’s visit”, I told her. “I had never seen my father so obviously happy before. It was as though he could not contain his joy even if he wished to”, I said. “He also spoke very highly of him even prior to his visit”, I said. “I had heard many things about the powerful Alpha I had been named after even before I had met him. That is how high in esteem my father held your mate”, I told her.

She remained silent.

So, I continued.

“I had thought…” my words trailed off and I tried to find the right words before trying again. “…hoped that he held my father in equally high regard enough to at least come for his funeral”, I finally confessed.

All was silent except for the sounds of our footsteps and the distant sounds from the creatures of the night, until I heard her sniff.

My eyes immediately snapped around to look at her only to see her wiping at her tears.

“My Lady”, I called softly. “I did not intend to upset you”, I said.

She shook her head.

“You have done nothing of the sort”, she told me. “But it is not all as you thought”, she told me.

We stopped at a large space with a large stone that she led us over to, before sitting down on the stone and patting the space beside her for me to do the same.

I obliged and sat beside her.

She looked out into the night as she continued.

“I am sure you do not completely understand the relationship between my mate and your father”, she said, and I slowly shook my head.

She nodded, probably knowing as much.

“You see”, she began. “We once had a daughter”, she said, sadness already coating her words. “She was the only child the Moon Goddess had blessed us with and she was our Joy”, she said. “When she was young, she, alongside other young werewolves around her age, had wandered to the edge of our borders”, a smile curved her lips when she spoke again. “She was very stubborn and willful you see, very much like her father”, she said. “They had wandered too far just outside our borders and there was a sudden rogue attack. At the time, rogues abducted any young werewolves and pups that they came across. They had been attacked”, she told me. “By the time we had been alerted and made our way there, we were able to drive the rogues off and managed to save all of them. None was badly injured, except one”, she said and turned to me. “There was a strange young wolf who had saved our daughter’s life at the risk of his own. It was your father”, she said.

My eyes widened in surprise at the news.

“He had been abducted from his pack but had still managed to save our daughter’s life”, she said, turning back to face forward. “Rhaia, our daughter, would not let us have peace until he was taken back to our pack and treated. When he finally woke up days later”, she said. “He had lost his memory as a result of his injury, and Rhaia had decided that he was sent to us by the Goddess. We had been left with no choice but to take him in as our own. After all, we had always wanted another child”, she said.

“Your father was the son we never had and we adored him, Rhaia especially”, she said. “So when his father showed up a few years later with proof, after hearing rumors that his missing son was in our pack, we had been left with very little choice but to release him to his rightful family”, she said.

A tear trailed down her cheek but she did not bother to wipe it away.

“It broke our hearts to let him go”, she said. “But he was not ours to keep”, she said with a sad sigh. “Rhaia would not eat for days after he left, neither could my mate. That was how much we all missed him. And despite how many times we had tried, we were denied the request of seeing him”, she said.

“After many years”, she went on. “He finally became Alpha and we started to send messages to communicate with him. He replied and we set a date to meet”, she let out another sigh. “He had finally come to visit with your mother just when she was pregnant with you”, she informed me. “It was a happy day for all of us to be finally reunited. Rhaia had just found her mate as well”, she said with a sad smile.

“He visited alone and with your mother a few more times”, she said turning to me. “You were too young to make the long journey, especially as you did not have a wolf at the time”, she told me. “We had planned to all visit your pack to finally meet you before a tragic incident took Rhaia’s mate from us”, she said. “That was why Regan had taken the journey alone”.

“That was when he visited us”, I said, understanding of the situation dawning on me.

She nodded.

“He had planned to stay longer”, she said. “But the loss of Rhaia’s mate had made a huge impact on her health. She had fallen gravely ill”, she told me. “That was why he had to come back sooner. Her condition had worsened drastically”, she said.

This time, the tears were falling without stopping and she did not seem to care enough to hide her grief from me.

“He had just arrived back here when we had gotten word on the attack on your pack”, she said, obviously trying not to burst into sobs as she took in deep breaths.

“He made ready to return, not that it would have made a difference by the time he would have gotten to your pack”, she said. “But Rhaia, as soon as she heard the news of what had happened to your father and your pack, finally gave up the fight”, she told me. “She died that very night”, she said, a sob finally escaping her.

I felt the tears I had been fighting to hold back slide down my cheek.

“When Regan heard it”, she went on despite her sobs. “His heart could not take loosing both of his children. He suffered a shock that left him in the state you saw him earlier”, she told me.

Unwillingly to hear any longer before the guilt consumed me, I pulled her into my arms and hugged her tightly.

She returned my hug as she sobbed in my arms.

“We did not mean to abandon you”, she sobbed. “We were convinced that you blamed us and wanted nothing to do with us”, she cried. “Oh we loved your father very much”, she cried. “You are so much like him”.

I held her the whole while she cried, shedding a few tears of my own until she finally stopped crying.

I released her and she pulled away.

“Forgive me, Alpha”, she said in a voice weak from crying.

“Please”, I said before she could continue. “Call me Regan”, I told her. “You were like a mother to my father. That would mean that you are like a grandmother to me”, I said. “So please, call me Regan”.

Slowly, a small smile made its way unto her face.

“Very well, Regan”, she said. “I did not mean to trouble you”, she said. “I simply needed you to understand Regan”, she said.

An amused smile twitched at the corner of my lips, one she saw that made her laugh softly.

“You even smile like him”, she observed.

I decided to take that as a compliment.

“Please do not be too hard on him”, she pleaded. “He had suffered very much with the loss of his children”, she said. “We both have”.

I looked to the ground, feeling very ashamed of my earlier behavior and for resenting him all those years.

Considering what he had been going through at the time, it was beyond god-like of him to have still sent help and messages regularly as often as he had. Also considering the distance between our packs.

He had not attended my father’s funeral to pay his respects because he had been in mourning, mourning both his children who had died within a few days.

Not to mention his health.

“Could he ever forgive me?” I asked her, sure she knew what I was talking about.

Her smile told me she did.

“He has never resented you”, she said. “You did not see how happy he was when he received the message that you were here”, she told me. “He has smiled more today than he has in many days”, she said. “So to answer your question, he already has”, she told me, bringing a hand to pat my arm affectionately.

I nodded at her words.

“And you?” I asked.

She smiled again.

“There is nothing to forgive, my dear”, she told me, her eyes holding the truth of her words.

I returned her smile with a grateful one of my own.

“Thank you, my Lady”, I said to her.

She waved my thanks away.

“You do not have to be so formal with me”, she said.

I smiled and looked at her.

“I’m afraid you would have to be patient with me on that, my Lady”, I said.

“Vey well”, she said with a forgiving smile.

We settled into comfortable silence before she spoke again.

“Regan”, she called gently and I turned to look at her. “You do know that you do not have to ask us to pledge to fight with you”, she said. “We will always be on your side whenever you need us”, she said.

I smiled in gratitude and nodded.

Suddenly remembering that I did not tell them and wondering if they already knew.

“My mate is pregnant”, I told her.

By the way her eyes turned wide in surprise and delight, it was safe to conclude that she had not known.

Jasmine’s POV The reality that I had found my long lost cousin was not as surprising as the fact that I had one in the first place. After getting her out of the dungeon she was locked in, I had brought her back to my house and taken her to one of the guests rooms to clean herself and change into one of my dresses. I then took her to the stream for a cool bath, one I could tell she thoroughly enjoyed, before returning to the pack house to rest. Lena had spent the remainder of that day with her mate and so, had no idea about my endeavors until she walked into our breakfast room to see my cousin seated on one of the chairs. She immediately halted in her tracks. “What is she doing here?” She asked, a look of displeasure immediately coming onto her face. “I brought her here”, I told her as I gently motioned for her to take her usual seat beside me. Reluctantly, she made her way over and sat, just as Nana and Gaia walked in. “Gaius will not be joining us this morning”, Ga

Regan’s POV After the revelation I had received from the Luna, I found it hard to summon the courage to face the Alpha. Early the next morning, Luke came into my room for answers to the reason behind my abnormal behavior. I had just finished writing to my mate when there was a knock on my room door and the door came open a moment later to reveal him. I simply glanced at him and went ahead to seal my letter to my mate. “What brings you here so early?” I asked him, acting as though I did not already know why he had come. “What was that about?” He asked, getting straight to the point. “I have no idea as to what you might be talking about”, I said, pretending to be clueless. From the corner of my eye, I could see him turn to me. I felt his glare burning into the side of my face that was turned to him. “You insulted a powerful Alpha who had graciously received us into his pack, and before many witnesses at that”, he listed. “And then stormed off after a pathetic apology

Jasmine’s POV The silence in the room after Isla’s words was deafening. To think that particular thought had never occurred to anyone the entire time was nothing short of astounding. At her words, I remembered the dream I sometimes had. The only dream I could remember. The only dream that had my mother in it. The dream of my parents’ death. I went over each scene more closely, knowing the dream for what it was, a memory. From being woken from my sleep by my mother to being handed over to my father to hide me. It all became clearer. But more than anything, it had all started to make sense. I remembered the last sight of my mother in the dream. Of her fighting off werewolves. Not vampires or witches, but werewolves. I had always wondered why she had not transformed into her wolf to fight them. A clear image of a pure white wolf instantly came to mind. If I had a pure white wolf, that meant my mother had had one as well. And she had purposely not shi

Regan’s POV The talk I had with Alpha Regan was one I did not realize we both needed. Coming to Nighthowl pack had not been the mistake I had initially thought it would be. Instead, it had helped me face wounds I had not even realized I still had and had helped me heal from them. Needless to say, my relationship and encounters with the Alpha of Nighthowl pack improved greatly after our talk. At first, we had both been embarrassed about crying but got over it soon. He took pride in showing me around his pack and introducing me to his members as Rhain’s son. Several of the older pack members even shared stories about my father from when he was young. From how they spoke about him, it was clear to see that he had been considered a part of their pack. They told me of his adventures and pranks with Alpha Regan’s daughter, Rhaia. How they had been thick as thieves and how much trouble the two had caused and gotten into in the pack. It was refreshing to hear that there

Jasmine’s POV After Isla’s break down in the study, Lena’s behavior towards her softened considerably. Though Isla did not seem to notice or care, I saw the effort Lena put into making her feel welcome into our pack and I was very grateful for it. I was not exaggerating when I said that Isla did not seem to care. In fact, she made it obvious that her only concern and only reason for being in our pack was to keep me and my unborn pup safe. She kept to herself, only showing up when needed and disappearing to the solitude of Nana’s garden or work room. Ever since finding out about Arwyn, she seemed very focused and determined not to leave any stone unturned. Her dedication earned her Nana’s admiration and even Gaia’s respect. And though she did not seem to require either, she related with them for the purpose of keeping me safe. She taught Gaia new spells and Gaia seemed genuinely impressed by Isla’s abilities. Regan’s POV The day I had been looking forward to finally came. It was the day to begin our journey home. I was truly excited since it meant I would see my mate and family very soon. It meant I would hear my son’s heartbeat soon. But no matter how happy I was to go home, it was sad to bid farewell to the Alpha and Luna of the Nighthowl pack. That morning, knowing I would be leaving soon, the Luna had prepared a hefty and delicious breakfast, insisting I eat enough before leaving to prepare the presents she insisted I take home to my family. She had also packed us more than enough food for our journey back home, and I could already tell that my warriors had taken a liking to the small statures Luna who had gone over and beyond to see to their comfort during their stay in her pack. Some of them looked almost sad to leave the pack. Those some did not include Emry. I had never seen anyone so excited to be returning home. He had been hummus a happy tune all morning and

Jasmine’s POV It was a surprise to everyone at breakfast the next morning to see Luke seated to Regan’s left, and the two thoroughly engaged in conversation. I am sure Luke’s mate was surprised as well because we shared a glance of astonishment before turning back to watch our mates interact. It was as though Luke had never left. The only difference was, when before it would be very obvious that they were both mind linking the other, it had now become that they would openly speak to each other. I secretly believed they did that so that Lena could see. If she saw and was affected by it, she hid it well, keeping a blank and almoubored expression on her face and only interacting with the ladies and her mate throughout the meal. It was the bored expression that let me know that she was indeed affected. Lena was never bored. If she was, she created something to entertain herself and others. Regan’s POV It had been three days since Luke came home and I could still feel the awkwardness between us. Lena had still not relented in her mission to pretend he did not exist and for the most part, I felt sorry for him. Lady Zara was getting along famously with the ladies, who went out of their way to include her in every activity they performed. They had even taken her to their favorite place at the stream and it was clear to see that Lady Zara was thoroughly enjoying her stay in our pack. For my part, I was mostly confused. I did not know whether to have Luke perform duties around the pack, just as I normally would. But it was not the same. I did not even know if o could still refer to him as my Beta. We had not had a single meaningful conversation since his return. On one hand, his mate was the last relative of the deceased Alpha of Redclaw pack, which meant that he could take up the leadership of the pack as its Alpha if he chose to remain there with her. O

I had known that Lena’s feelings had been hurt by Luke’s refusal to respond to the several letters she had sent him while he had been away. However, I had assumed that all would be forgiven once he returned home. I had assumed wrong. She had avoided seeing him all day and had remained in the privacy of her room until it was time for Supper. Then, she had emerged in all her cold beauty and proceeded to sit as far away from Luke at the dinner table in the pack house. Regan’s POV It had been more than ten days since my warriors and I returned from our successful journey. I had received several letters from the Alpha and Luna of Nighthowl pack. She also wrote to inform me that she had written to her distant nephew, the Alpha of Moonrock pack, and encouraged me to write to him, assuring me of his acceptance to hear of my request. After receiving that particular letter, I wasted no time in writing to the Alpha of Moonrock pack, convincing Alpha Gaiu to do the same on our behalf. With his arm around my waist, my mate led us back to our home after our evening meal with the rest of the pack to welcome our warriors back. Mira had done an absolutely marvelous job at cooking up the most sumptuous meal for our supper. Everyone had eaten their feel and the mood was very merry. However, throughout the meal, Isla remained quiet as usual, only lightly conversing with Lena or other wise quietly watching and smiling to some antics the warriors did. Most of them were somewhat drunk and were obnoxiously loud. One thing that was clear to anyone with eyes was how much and how often most of the warriors who had returned -most of which were unmated - tried to gain Isla’s attention. At first, they had simply stared at her or passed her admiring glances. But once they started to drink, they grew bolder with trying to g

Our goodbye was a very casual affair as we both knew each other well enough to know that we did not want to get affectionate or create a scene. So we limited our goodbye to a nod and a brief handshake and patting of shoulders.
