“So how was school, hija?” (“Hija” in Filipino is a word that older people use to address younger girls) My dad asked as we gather at the dining table. It’s lunchtime and my family decided to gather when they heard Navia getting back. People in here are my Auntie who really favours Navia and Mommy’s sister, my grandmother and my father. The rest of the family that is not here are either dead or they just don’t care. My mom is not dead but she’s also not alive. She’s in a coma for three years now when she experienced a heart attack. She’s brain dead and the doctor said it’ll be a miracle if she would one day wake up. Of course, everyone love my mom so they always hoped for the best outcome for her.
“It was fun dad. How about Freya?” She smiled sweetly. Her face was one of her advantages, even if I knew her true personality she can just get through the needle hole with that angelic face of her.
I secretly gritted my teeth. She knows that I didn’t go to college after dropping out of high school yet she still dares to ask that?
Yet a part of me is angry at myself. It would be better if I was not that blind from falling in love with June and decided to continue studying. Part of it is my fault so I can’t really blame her.
“You know she’s a dropped out.” My auntie rolled her eyes as she fans herself from her fancy pamaypay. (“Pamaypay” is one of the local hand fans made by the Filipino.) I know my Auntie from the start, she dislikes me ever since I dropped out of high school. She loathes a person who catches feelings first rather than catching dreams so they could sustain themselves. I don’t hate nor dislike my auntie because her reason of disliking me is valid and I’m planning to change that.
“I thought we talked about this?” My father groaned in annoyance.
“Oh, I’m sorry father, that was insensitive to ask.” She took a glance in my way and looked at dad again, “But isn’t it concerning if the successor of the family is a dropout?” she asked sarcastically that I almost threw my fork at her. Still, I can’t help but agree with her statement. If I was in my old self, that wouldn’t hurt my feelings at all but right now that I’m aware of her evil intentions, it makes me want to gag. Before, I thought she was just concerned for me and the family. I was so dumb that it made me numb to insults.
“Father..” I sniffed. “I’m sorry if I can’t reach your expectations.” I fakingly cried. I won’t just stand by and watch her run her mouth insulting my well-being.
“Wh-what are you saying?” My father ushered me quickly. I wiped the tears on my cheeks that I forced to come out, “I’m a useless daughter.” I sobbed. I can see in my peripheral vision that Navia was surprised at my reactions. The sister who always idolized her and looked up to her is now crying. My past self was so dumb that I said ‘Let sister Navia run as the next successor.’ No way in hell that I would give this position to someone evil as her.
“Look what you’ve done Navia!” my grandmother exclaimed but I didn’t hear her answer. That’s right. Isn’t this the game you wanted to play in the first place? I’ll make sure to be the one laughing at the end while you suffer.
“Shh calm down. You’re not useless okay? I’m here to guide you and I’ll even find you a very excellent tutor so you can flourish flawlessly in handling our business,” my dad reassured me. I just nod while I continued acting pitiful. I heard Navia tsked and it made me secretly smile.
Maybe Navia forgot this, but almost all of the people in this household is on my side. I just need to play my cards right. Study my ass off, know more about what she’s planning and find out her weakness. I need to know the reason why she’s doing this to me. As far as what I’ve recalled in my memories, I and Navia never got into a fight when we’re kids. Like we always play together and do other stuff together. Where did it go wrong for her to hate me like this?
“Such a crybaby,” my auntie mumbled but I just ignored her. I know how to win her favour, starting from now on I’ll be doing my best to achieve the best version of myself and surpass this so-called intelligence of Navia. My old self was never fond of studying and is more focused on my relationship with June.
Speaking of June after dropping us off in our mansion he said he had an emergency at his house so he can’t join us for lunch. It’s okay and it doesn’t bother me at all. I have no plan on breaking up with June until I found out what Navia wants from him. June is clearly smitten by my sister.
The food arrived and I calmed down. I’ll start organizing my plan after a good meal.
My family is not one of the wealthiest in the world but that doesn’t mean we’re not living a lavish life. We can have everything we want.
Our house is large and very medieval themed. The glowing chandelier, the long big tables, hundreds of maids and bodyguards and wide hacienda. (“hacienda” in Philippines means ‘wide land’ mostly it has crops and other plants that can be harvested.) It means we’re rich.
Throughout the meal, my auntie and Navia was the only one exchanging questions with each other. Surprisingly she didn’t say any indirect harsh or insults to me.
My phone buzzed after the meal I had. I am in my room right now, laying in my bed. Thinking about what I should do next. I fished my phone out of my pocket dress and saw a text from June. He’s just asking what happened. I know this. It may look like he’s concerned about me but for sure he’s asking so he could know more about Navia. I didn’t realize his before because I’m stupid.
I need to get along with Navia’s tactics while moving secretly to find what she really wants and why she wants to ruin me. Changing some major events will lead to an unpredictable future and I might endanger my life even more. So the plan is to play as the same dumb, naïve and clumsy sister whose lovesick with her boyfriend from head to toe while planning how to stop her evil plans towards me or even towards my family.
But how? What should I do first?
I closed my phone without replying to June and rolled over my bed. Brainstorming on what should be my first step. Sure I have the outline on what to do, but how do I do the other things under the major plans I have on my head?
“Argh.” I abruptly sat up in my bed. I can’t think of anything. Am I this dumb? My head feels empty. I can’t even plan something properly.
Hmm...
To plan something smart, I need to be ‘smart’ and have knowledge which clearly are the things I’m lacking.
“Ah!” I remembered what dad said earlier. So I fetched my phone again and texted him since he left the house after his secretary called him for a meeting. My dad is busy but he always prioritizes his family over work. This is what makes him the best dad. Subjectively speaking only.
I asked dad for a tutor and told him to keep this a secret from the whole family over the text. Of course, he was confused but I just reasoned out that I want to surprise the other members. That was half true though. Dad sent me a reply to come to the company for more details and so I did. I changed to formal clothes and called one of my personal bodyguards to assist me. If I want to learn, I need to use all the help a person can give me.
When I came down to the living room, I saw Navia watching TV. She noticed my presence and gave me a very stupendous look. If I was my old self I would still be blind by her expressions that says a lot about hating me.
“Where are you going?” she asked but I just shrugged. She looked at me like I was some kind of alien. I gave her an arrogant look but then I changed it immediately, I need to control my expression.
So I smiled sweetly at her. She blinked her eyes multiple times and rubbed them. Maybe she thought she was hallucinating. I’m thankful that even though my auntie calls her a genius, she still have stupid sides.
“I’m going to see June," I lied because if I told her the truth, she would get suspicious and ask me a lot of questions that I may be not able to dodge. Her confused expression was replaced with a smug look. She still thinks of me as a girl who is head over heels for her boyfriend. Though in my past, she was right.
“Oh then, ingat.” (“ingat” in Filipino means ‘take care’) She flipped her shining red hair and went back to watching TV. I almost rolled my eyes in annoyance.
I just continued walking to the car that’s waiting outside and in front of the entrance of our mansion. The maids bowed as I pass them. Without hesitation and full of determination to change my fate from the horrible ending of my past, I got in the car. When the driver started the engine, I can’t help but look back at the big door that was opened. I saw Navia standing there, grinning like a maniac. I knew what she’ll do next time. She’ll hide one of my grandmother’s precious pieces of jewellery and indirectly accused me of robbery. The window of the car is very tinted outside so I was free to express whatever I want without her seeing it. I raised my middle finger and waved it. Sucker, I know what you’re planning. You might be smart, but I know the future.
The ride was pretty smooth but I completely forgot to bring my phone. Augh whatever. June is not the important thing right now since the only reason why I carry a phone is to contact him but now it’s meaningless. Honestly, it’s not like I completely healed from the past. Part of me does love June but what he did to me was like ripping my heart in two and eating it. Nothing was left. My feelings for him doesn’t matter to me anymore.
When I arrived at the company, everyone was greeting me happy since I rarely come here. My dad’s business is managing a hotel and a casino. We have different branches all over the world so it’s a big business. The staff insisted on helping me to get to my father but I just shook my head. From now on, I should also choose what help I should be getting. If it’s beneficial or just entirely stupid.
When the elevator opened, I quickly got in and it was about to close when two pairs of hands stopped it. Ouch, that must’ve hurt. The elevator door opened again and it revealed a man catching his breath. He’s wearing a tuxedo and glasses. He have very curly black hair and brown skin like the sun touched him every time like he was the favourite of the sun. He has this flawless and clear skin.
I looked away when his eyes met mine. Those are the lightest brown eyes I’ve ever seen. He looks like he’s a mix of the Black and Caucasian race, or not. I really don’t know. He might just be light skin but he’s very charming and handsome. He might be one of those heartthrob crushes you see in a high school film on Netflix. Also, he has a great body –
My thoughts were interrupted when the elevator opened. What the hell am I thinking? I’m so shameless having those thoughts!
“Miss?” Goosebumps. When I heard his voice, all the hair in my body stood up. His voice is deep but not that deep where you wonder if it came underground, it was just deeper than the usual but not deeper than normal..get it?
“Miss, aren't you getting off?”
“Ah, I’m sorry!” I blushed when I realize this is the top floor already. Before the door closes in I made a jump. Since he got out first, he was outside and I almost bumped my head to his chest. Damn, he’s tall and his body is well built.
I quickly shook my head in embarrassment. Seriously what is wrong with me today?
I excused myself and ran to my dad’s office. Come to think of it, he looks weirdly familiar. Did we somehow meet in the past or maybe this time? I can’t recall clearly.
When I opened the door of my dad’s office I saw him sitting comfortably in the couch where he talks to his visitors most of the time.
“Oh, you’re here.” My dad smiled.
“Hi, dad!”
“Hello, Mister Karlos.”
I almost choked on my own saliva when I heard a voice behind me. It was none other than the person I’m having weird thoughts with.
“Hello, Mister Gin.”
Gin!? Gin Whinston!? One of the famous bachelors in this town!? So that’s why he looks familiar. He’s famous among the younger girls because of how smart and handsome he is.
“Oh, by the way, this is my daughter, Freya Monleon, the one I talked to you about. Freya, this is Gin, your tutor.”
My inner self screamed WHAT!?
I can’t believe this is happening. All I wanted was to get a teacher, an ordinary teacher but here sitting in front of me is the person I didn’t even have interaction with him in my past life. How unpredictable is that?“So, you’re the student Mister Ancajas talked about.” His voice broke the awkward silence between us. Ever since my dad introduced us to each other, we’re in this awkward state. My dad was kind of busy so he sent us to his favourite restaurant where we can discuss this tutor life. Gin was willing to comply. Also, it’s not a big surprise that Gin wants to be a tutor, even though he’s one of the famous bachelors in town, he still needs money. From what I’ve heard he has three sisters. He’s the oldest among them so he needs to earn a lot because both of his parents are sick and needs treatment and their company is falling apart. In a social hierarchy, it is obvious that I am above Gin since we hav
“Oh really? I was curious since you both looked perfect so I came here and asked,” Gin laughed. His words made me want to throw a punch on his face. What an excuse.“I see. Is she your wife too?” June pointed at me, hiding in the cloth. I buried my face harder on Gin’s chest, trying to hide my wet eyes. I wiped it using the cloth that I hung around my head.“Probably.” Gin’s voice almost sounded like he’s angry but maybe I just didn’t hear it correctly. His grip on my shoulder tightened even more but not to the point where it hurts. After wiping the tears of the sudden shock, I looked at them again. The girl was just sitting quietly. Her long brown hair was covering her face and she’s crouching so it’s hard to see most of her features but I saw some bruises on her wrist.“Oh.” June laughed at Gin’s remarks. He then tapped the shoulder of his wife, “Say hello,&r
“I-I saw Miss Freya going into your room…”I scratched my ears as I listen to their nonsense story. The same thing happened before. My dumb self was framed and no one believed except for Navia who acted like a savior right in front of me. Well, now that I know this, I prepared a little bomb to drop for them.“What?” My grandma raised her voice, “Are you implying that my apo is the culprit?” (‘Apo’ is the Tagalog of ‘grandchild’) Her angry voice boomed and I saw how the maid’s hands shook in fear. I almost smirked but I kept it in. If it was in the past, I would cry immediately and deny things and that made everything worst. So right now, I’ll let my grandma handle this.“N-no, ma’am.” I can hear the maid’s sniffs. Poor girl. Bribed by the money of evil, now she’s in that situation.“My goodness!” Grandma t
“What the hell are you doing here?” I half-shouted at the man climbing towards my window. When he finally gets inside my room, I smacked his head.“Harsh.” He groaned but then laugh after. He faced me and waved a brown envelope in front of my face.“What’s that?”“Your weapon.”I scoff at his response. What? A weapon? Did he bring in some lethal things so I could get my revenge?“Are you stupid?” I glared at him. If looks could kill, he’d probably be dead by now.He shrugged and handed me the envelope, “Look at it,” Said Gin and sat on my bed as if nothing happened.“I’ll look at it after you tell me what the hell and how did you get in here?” I put my right hand on my waist and raised an eyebrow at him.“I sneak in of course.” He laid on the bed comfortably and closed his eyes, “It was a little difficult hone
“M – Marry?” I almost shouted in shock. This guy is making a deal by getting us tied? “Yes." His tone of boredom made me more nervous. This guy is something else. How could he talk about marriage like it's no joke? "Ah, seriously." I closed my eyes and calmed myself first. He's so annoying! How can a person be like this? Even the sound of his breathing annoys the hell out of me! “Think about it, pretty lady. Use that head of yours.” He rise up and went to my window, “I’ll get your answer next time we meet.” He winks and opens it. My eyes went wide when he just jumped off without hesitation. I quickly ran to see his state. I know that my room is located on the second floor and it’s not that high but still it can cause certain injuries if you jumped from this floor. “Are you crazy?!” I mouthed at the guy who’s standing like he didn’t just jump from a high place. He waved his hands at me and turned his back around before starting to run. That guy!
I was waiting for the painful impact but I felt none after a while. So I slowly opened my eyes to see my condition, maybe it’s a miracle that I can still walk or use one of my hands after this. I’ll surely find out who pushed me off!“You okay?” An unfamiliar voice caught me off guard. I look up to see blinding blonde hair and shining blue eyes.Who’s this?“Who’re you?” I raised my eyebrow instinctively. He looks like an American and I’ve never seen this man before. Not in my past nor in my current memories.“I’ll tell you once you get off.”I gasped when I finally assisted what situation I’m in. Basically, when I fell, this guy out of nowhere appeared and saved me like a knight. He has fast reflexes, I suppose. But who’s he?I quickly escaped away from his embrace, even if I was struggling in shock, he made sure to let go of me slowly and gently. I couldn&r
"Good morning, lady. You’re even shining today though you’ve always been this bright,” He cheered.“Please be quiet, I can’t even hear myself losing the will to live,” I groaned. This man can’t be serious. Why is he here, early in the morning? And what’s with the introduction of being my fiancée? He’s making my head hurt more.“As a proper fiancée, I need to make sure my future wife had a good sleep.” He raised his shoulders, offering me his assistance. Of course, I hesitated at first but I accepted it anyway.“Accepting that means you said yes to my offer?” He sneered which made me roll my eyes and almost retrieved my hands away from his grip but the hands that snaked around his shoulders were sandwiched even more. I frowned.“No, take backs.”“What are you, a child?”“Probably, if you want me to.”I realize
“What the hell, Freya?” The angry voice from June roared. I saw the sky outside getting gloomy, it feels like a sign that today will be another stress in a cup. “June,” I called his name once again. His eyes drifted down at my hands that were holding Gin’s wrist. I can see how it angered him more. He openly gritted his teeth so hard that I saw his jaw move. I let Gin go and gave him a knowing look. I need him to stay out of sight for a bit so things wouldn’t get messy. “Alright,” He backed up. June took wide steps to reach where I stood. He even tried to grab Gin who’s walking towards Navia and Van but I immediately stopped him by snatching the hem of his white polo t-shirt. “Let’s talk.” June’s expression softened when we met eyes. “Freya.” Now that we’re standing close, I can see how pale he is. His breath is shaky and heavy. I grabbed his hands and guided him to the place where I should’ve brou
Days have passed. I don't know what to do since I've witness a lot of things I didn't remember in the past. I've been trying to connect a lot of things to figure out what to do next.I'm no stupid enough to depend on my memories of my last life, but atleast it will be a basis of my next moves.Surprisingly Navia didn't do anything at the moment. It's a little scary because even her moves are now different.Right now, I'm contemplating life alone in my room. Father is at work, my grandmother somehow wanted to visit the orphanage that she grew up with and Navia went out with Van.I don't want to doubt my memories but...What if everything was just a dream? What if it really didn't happen? Cause it's the only right reason for these things. It makes my heart throb. It makes my heart also drop down my gut. The feeling is heavy. What if it's all in my head? That Navia hated me? And what if June really did love me?Wait — Scratch that jerk. He lied about being married.I jolted up when I re
“A date? Did you hit your head or something?” I asked in disbelief. He chuckled. “Come on, you're acting as if I'm not a sweet person.” He turned in a corner. “Plus, we're a team. I need to know the whole plan, your enemies, your doubts,” he continued.I crossed my arms in my chest and stared blankly at the man driving while wearing a smug look. “Why so?” I questioned his skanky ass. For some reason, he's a little more energetic today. “Stop pouting.” He reached out and pinched my nose gently. I slapped his hands away and glared but he just laughed and shrugged it off.I rolled my eyes, looks at the window and sighed. Should I continue entertaining my hatred towards my sister and my ex-boyfriend who killed me in the past? The thing is, they're different now and it's understandable since I'm the only one who knows what happened. But... the things that are occurring is making me falter. It's obviously not the same before. Sure there are other similar things t
“A-Aw – hey, watch it, man!” Gin lets Van go soon after he shoves him inside the car. I just shook my head in disbelief and at how much noise they are.“Let’s go.” My reflexes went ahead of me. When Gin was about to grab my hands, I quickly flinched away.I have no idea why I did that, but I guess it's because of my reflexes and how stress is throwing me under the bus this past few days.I mean, who would be relaxed after everything that happened?Gin looked surprise at my reaction but I just smiled awkwardly. Sure, I was in denial about it two days ago. I honestly have a little resentment towards him, and I feel a little bit awkward. My feelings can’t help it since I was betrayed by the people I thought loved me dearly. It’s a trauma response.“Are you angry?” His voice sounded worried.I shook my head. "No, just a little tired.” Then J leaned on the car seat and sighed deeply. I haven't started with my plan yet, but
Those days passed by like nothing had happened. The death of a stranger seems meaningless. I waited for a family, at least, to show up and claim her body at the morgue, and no one came. When we buried her body, not even the other maids who claimed to know her attended, it was just me, Gin, and dad. It’s been three days ever since I’ve confronted Navia, too, and just yesterday, I found out that she’s no longer staying in the house because she’s starting a business. I have no idea what is it, even my father. On the other hand, my grandmother is busy handling the company affairs since this month is a rush sale.“You’re pouting again.” Gin’s voice knocked my senses, “You okay?”“What do you think?” I sarcastically bite back.“I think she’s far from that.” The blonde freak sitting on the back of the car squished in.I rolled my eyes. I completely forgot about his e
The police asked the father to come with them for interrogation, and Gin insisted on coming along with my father. At first, my dad complained, but he couldn’t argue with Gin, who seemed determined. The police also asked for assistance for Navia and me, but my father intruded and said we were too shocked and left us for another day, to which the police agreed immediately. It was not a surprise since my father is influential enough to sway this case. I hope nothing worse will happen.I paced back and forth in my room. The last words of that strange maid echoed on my mind.Everyone in the house gossiped about the sudden death of that maid. Everywhere I go, I always hear what happened, and it can’t get off my mind. I can’t even calm down a little bit. I was sweating all over my body while that creepy voice of the maid played like a song on loop on my head.Someone knows something about my past self. Why are they after me? Why is it that they intend
“Have you ever considered talking to birds?”“What? Are you stupid?”Gin chuckled after hearing my statement. How can he make such a stupid question every time we see each other?“Shut up and start acting your age, alright?” I whispered back to him when we finally sat at the table. It’s been a week since those incidents happened. That week made me feel hell for a bit. Yesterday, my dad and my grandma came back from the business trip they had gone through. Of course, the next thing would be predictable; he finds out that both his daughters have a fiancée and keep on visiting and staying at the house every day.Surprisingly, it was peaceful between the four of us. Navia didn’t pull any tricks or stunts to me, which seemed suspicious. On the other hand, Gin keeps on asking dumb questions every God damn time that it irks me, but it also helps me get my mind off my problems. I think my feelings for
Hearing his word made me realize how much of an asshole he really is. He’s not the June I imagined him to be. I was so blinded by love that even his flaws became perfect to me and I ignored the red flags before thinking that he’s just an imperfect human being that loves me too. I went on my knees to look at June’s eyes. “You’re not the man I love.” “After a year you’re going to have a change of heart? We promise each other!” He cried out. “You probably love me because of my money, right?” “Freya, t-that’s not it! I love you, honestly-“ A slap landed on his face again. “Leave,” I stood up, “You’re not welcome here or in my life anymore.” With that, I opened the door and went outside. I waited for him to get out before closing it. “Freya…” He called lovingly. It made my heart sting in pain again. How could he sound so sweet despite the things he has done? I want to shout at him. To question him why he pushed
