CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The police asked the father to come with them for interrogation, and Gin insisted on coming along with my father. At first, my dad complained, but he couldn’t argue with Gin, who seemed determined. The police also asked for assistance for Navia and me, but my father intruded and said we were too shocked and left us for another day, to which the police agreed immediately. It was not a surprise since my father is influential enough to sway this case. I hope nothing worse will happen.

I paced back and forth in my room. The last words of that strange maid echoed on my mind.

Everyone in the house gossiped about the sudden death of that maid. Everywhere I go, I always hear what happened, and it can’t get off my mind. I can’t even calm down a little bit. I was sweating all over my body while that creepy voice of the maid played like a song on loop on my head.

Someone knows something about my past self. Why are they after me? Why is it that they intend to kill me on the spot?

That maid was also the one who pushed me last week on that stair and got saved by the blonde boy. Everything doesn’t make sense. Who is my real enemy? Is it really my sister? Or someone I don’t know?

I chewed on my nails again.

This can’t be real.

I never offended anyone. I never did anything wrong, even if I was foolish.

But then I remembered that the maid suspiciously approached Navia. Even if her reasoning is valid that the maid has a mental illness, it is still strange to see that everyone in that room chooses her?

I stopped walking back and forth and put my hands down. I decided to talk with my sister; even if she denies it, I know I will see through her since I know her actual colour.

So I got outside of my room and stomped to find my very kind step-sister. I walked around the mansion to look for a tall red-haired woman but what came to me instead was the shining blonde-haired guy who flashed a huge smile. I almost squinted my eyes at how bright he is, and it’s annoying the hell out of me.

“Are you in a hurry?” He asked while leaning on the wall.

Why does every time I encounter this human being, no one is around? It makes things more awkward.

“Yes,” I was about to walk away, but he spoke, “Are you looking for Navia?”

I looked at him, “Yes.”

“How about you ask me where she is, cupcake?” He expressed in a flirtatious manner.

I shivered.

“If I ask you, will you tell me?”

“No.” He smiled brightly again. I think my eyes will cry from how bright he is right now. What is he, a walking bulb?

“Asshole.”

“But!” He raised one eyebrow and plastered another playful smile, “I can guide you to where she is right now.”

“Why would I trust you?”

“Because we will be in-laws in the future!”

“Bullshit.” I quickly turned around and marched away.

What a revolting behaviour for someone who has a fiancée. Almost all of the men I know are shit.

“I heard you were looking for me?”

Finally, after hours and hours of looking, I found the antagonist of my life. I need to confirm something that’s been bugging me ever since.

She’s sitting comfortably on the bench under the big tree behind our mansion. It’s like a mini forest, but you can still see the big house from not so far away. Now I know why I can’t find her anywhere in our home. She’s here reading a book while sipping a cup of coffee as if she didn’t just witness something horrifying.

“We need to talk,” I exclaimed.

She slowly puts down her book on the small wooden table in front of the bench she’s sitting on and looks at me dead in the eyes.

“What?”

“What did you do?” I can feel my anger soaring up my throat.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” She replied sternly. It made me so mad that I closed the gaps between us and almost slapped her.

“You knew very well what I’m talking about…” My voice is shaking.

She gazed up at me with her bored expression. A gentle wind breeze swayed her long red hair, and something flickered in her eyes as she kept staring at me.

“What? Cat got your tongue?” I grabbed her t-shirt, “Answer me!”

She smirked and brushed off my hands.

She didn’t utter any word. She stood up and strode past me. My whole body is now trembling. Angry is a simple objective to describe what I’m feeling right now. I feel like the pinch of hatred I tried to hide after she betrayed me with June sparked up.

I quickly grabbed her wrist to make her look at me before she could even walk away freely. Her expression didn’t make a change. Just a cold and bored one was written all over her features.

“Do you even have a conscience? Clearly, you ordered that maid.” I gritted my teeth as I spoke the words out.

“Darling, I pity you,” She finally answered, “You’re gullible and easy to be manipulated. It sickens me,” She continued.

I gave her a short laugh of sarcasm, “I sicken you? You’re the crazy one here – hey!” She didn’t even let me finish my sentence. She just turned around again and started walking away.

“I know you hate me!” I shouted, which made her stop, “I know everything. My father…” I gulped. It seemed hard to let this information out. I scanned the place to see if someone was here or someone was near. It’s a good thing there’s none, “My father… killed your parents, didn’t he?” I added. My voice almost cracked up.

I don’t know the whole reason why it happened since the information Gin gave me does not contain everything, and I haven’t read the back of the papers yet.

Navia quickly got back at me and landed her hands on my cheeks.

“Don’t you ever mention that?”

“So it was true?” I scoff at her, “You’re targeting my family and me because my father killed your-“Another slap went on my way. I bit my lip at how painful it was.

“You don’t have the right to talk about them.” She sneered.

“Ha! Is this the reason why you hate me so much? Why me? Why just let your anger on me?” I cried out.

“You have no idea… Of everything.”

“So, is that why you’re planning to kill me?” I questioned. Her eyes widened in surprise, “If I have no idea, then what? Why? Why do you hate me!” I raged.

She looks away and straightens herself out.

“Shut up.” That’s what she said before, completely exiting.

I couldn’t run to catch up to her; my knees were too weak. If anyone has seen us, they would think I’m the villain here. Then again, even if Navia’s back story is sad, it is still not justifiable to make me the emotional outlet. I would partially understand if he went to my dad or something like that, but it isn’t and it makes me wonder all the time. Why me? Is that the only reason for her to despise me to death? What did I do? We were the same age back then! Just like her, I was a child!

Why… Why does she hate me so much?

“Happy 5th anniversary, babe.” June kissed my cheeks. I blushed. Even though we’re almost 5 years together, the spark wouldn’t fade off. I really love this guy and it’s been my dream to live with him for a lifetime, although next month, that dream would be my reality forever because finally, we’re getting married.“Are you enjoying your steak?” He smiled and drank the wine he’s holding. I tugged some of my hair strands behind my ear because they’re swaying in my face too much. We’re having our dinner on the rooftop where he prepared candle lights, one romantic table and some luxurious meal.“Yeah.” I smiled sweetly. The moon is shining so bright tonight that I don’t need any light to see June’s handsome face.“Hmm, too bad..” he uttered and it made me confused, “Too bad since this will be our last night together,” he continued and I

I still can’t grope the idea that this is the reality. Everything was so detailed that I can’t call that a dream. Hearing his word made me realize how much of an asshole he really is. He’s not the June I imagined him to be. I was so blinded by love that even his flaws became perfect to me and I ignored the red flags before thinking that he’s just an imperfect human being that loves me too. I went on my knees to look at June’s eyes. “You’re not the man I love.” “After a year you’re going to have a change of heart? We promise each other!” He cried out. “You probably love me because of my money, right?” “Freya, t-that’s not it! I saw the sky outside getting gloomy, it feels like a sign that today will be another stress in a cup. “June,” I called his name once again. His eyes drifted down at my hands that were holding Gin’s wrist. I can see how it angered him more. He openly gritted his teeth so hard that I saw his jaw move. I let Gin go and gave him a knowing look. I need him to stay out of sight for a bit so things wouldn’t get messy. “Alright,” He backed up. June took wide steps to reach where I stood. He even tried to grab Gin who’s walking towards Navia and Van but I immediately stopped him by snatching the hem of his white polo t-shirt. “Let’s talk.” June’s expression softened when we met eyes. “Freya.” Now that we’re standing close, I can see how pale he is.
