Chapter 9

"Ms. Lexington, you should get in. We can't park here, and we don't want to deal with a ticket," Jake said politely. Yet, his tone left no room for argument.

Savannah had no choice but to climb into the car. As she settled into the seat, the distance between her and Maxwell was palpable.

The car cruised down the wide street, the silence inside so heavy it felt like the slightest noise would shatter it.

Savannah stole a glance at Maxwell. The shifting light and shadow partly obscured his tall frame as he gazed out the window. It was impossible to tell what was on his mind.

When they passed a pharmacy, Maxwell suddenly spoke, his voice indifferent. "Pull over."

The driver complied and pulled over to the curb.

Maxwell stepped out first. He then circled around to Savannah's side and opened the door. "Get out," he instructed.

Savannah was puzzled but followed him into the pharmacy without protest.
