Chapter 12

I looked down. “Felix, we’re just not right for each other.”

“Why not?”

My fingers tightened involuntarily. As much as I didn’t want to say it outright, the truth was the truth.

“You know my situation. My mom and I have a complicated past. I don’t want you to be judged because of me. And I don’t want to be a weakness that people can exploit. You shouldn’t have to deal with that. Felix, you’re amazing. You deserve better.”

He leaned in closer. “So, it’s not that you don’t like me?”

My ears burned with embarrassment. “I don’t like you.”

“That’s fine. We don’t have to be in love right away. We can figure that out after we’re married.” Felix reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a ring.

He slipped it onto my finger. “We’re getting married tomorrow.”

I stared at him, stunned.

He spoke with a mix of casualness and sincerity, “I’m not kidding.”

I swallowed the words I was about to say.
