When Alex informed me that today was the day I needed to paint, a surge of panic ran through me. My first instinct was to check the calendar hanging in my room, frantically flipping through the pages to confirm what I already suspected—his birthday was just around the corner.

Sure enough, it was a mere two to three weeks away, and the realization hit me like a ton of bricks: I hadn’t even started his portrait yet. How could I have let this slip? It felt like the world was spinning out of control.
