Chapter 16

My training with Alexa had been easy yet tough and I wondered how often we would do this, but I did not have the mind to ask her because I still wasn’t sure about my place. When we had finished she gave me a bottle of water and went to shower saying that she had somewhere else to be soon, and Damon would be here to pick me up soon. I had a feeling that she excused herself because she did not want to be here when Damon came, due to the argument they had before.

After about ten minutes, Damon showed up. He was wearing a suit and looking exhausted but I did not ask. I did not know how he would respond to it. He had a reputation of hurting people for the slightest things. I once heard a rumor that he killed someone just because he did not like the way he chewed his food.

I shook the thoughts out of my head. In the rogue pack, when we spent hours scrubbing the blood of the walls in the dungeons and feeding the forgotten prisoners, we had a habit of telling far fetched stories to keep ourselves entertained, and take our minds off the terrible true nature of the things that we were doing. Most of the rumors had been refined and exaggerated to distract ourselves from our own lives.

I shuddered at the memories of the rogue pack. I had friends there that I was starting to miss. We had tried our best not to form attachments, because any small mistake could get anybody killed at any time, and if you were found mourning or sad, then you would be killed too. It was best to be alone and not get close to anybody, because anybody could just disappear anytime.

I had done my best, but i had a friend there, Gemma. I thought about her anytime I ate here. I imagined how she would be scraping together the crumbs in her plate to fill her stomach and it hurt me. They gave us enough food to survive there, but not enough to make you strong, because weak and hungry people cannot overthrow them. We had the numbers to do so, but we did not have the strength. A plan was created once, but the planners were betrayed by a man whose son had not eaten in weeks. He sold them out for a plate of food for his son.

I sat in the back seat of the car and we drove towards the house where I had been staying, with a soft bed and clean clothes and guilt hit me again. I needed to get Gemma out of there once I got a plan to leave this place or find out what exactly was going on.

We pulled into the mansion and I saw Jacob’s figure standing outside the huge doors. We parked the car and Damon and I got out of the car. Jacob walked over to us and he stopped in front of me. He scanned my body and I remembered that I was still wearing my training clothes. His expression changed to one of anger and he faced Damon.

“I thought we talked about this, she needs more time to rest” He said, his voice calm but his eyes showed that he was angry.

“We did talk about it and I decided to do what I thought was best,” Damon said.

“What is your problem? Her injuries were serious and she needs to rest!”

“"She has rested enough! Sooner or later, the council is going to approach us and ask that she proves herself and she cannot be weak, that would cause an even bigger problem!” Damon said, raising his voice.

What?

The council?

Prove myself?

What are they talking about??

They were having a serious conversation about me and I did not understand what was going on, but for some reason I still felt like I was eavesdropping on them.

“And when they come, we will ask for more time!” Jacob stated, his anger started to sound in his voice.

“You and I both know that that would only make us look weak. And we cannot have them looking at us as weak!” Damon shouted.

Jacob kept quiet and stared at him. He looked like he wanted to rip Damon’s head off but he was holding himself back. He sighed and looked at me.

“You must be tired, I think you should go upstairs to take a shower and rest,” he said.

It did not sound like a suggestion, it sounded like he wanted to get rid of me so that he could properly talk to Damon. I took a bow and walked towards the mansion. them being distracted would give me more time to think of an escape plan.

I had not gone before I heard their voices start up again, but this time with growling and more shouting. I was relieved that I was no longer there, but there was a hint of curiosity in me now.

Who would I have to prove myself to and why?

None of this made any sense, and I did not know who I could go to for answers. My wolf was still asleep so my instincts were not as good as they used to be. I need her and I missed talking to her.

I got to my room and peeled my training clothes off and stepped into the bathroom to see a bath had already been prepared for me with a towel by the side of the tub. Before I could register my confusion, a lady walked in, she was dressed in the maid attire for the mansion and she smiled at me.

“Alpha Damon called ahead to have it prepared for you, he said you might have a stressful day” she explained.

I caught myself smiling a little at his thoughtfulness, especially when he seemed not to care much for the entire day. I was prepared to start plotting my escape, but when I stepped into the bath, all thoughts left my head and my body relaxed immediately.
