Violet POV

“Did you hear that?” I whispered to Janis.

She stared at me as if I had grown two heads. “Hear what?”

Another muffled groan sounded.

“This. Someone groaned!” I pointed.

“Girl, you are imagining,” Janis said, shaking her head. “There’s no one in this house. I think you better leave. I'll contact Martha and let her know about you, or you can call her and inform her you came here but found no one.”

I licked my lips as I whipped my head to understand the source of the groans. Was I imagining? Why couldn’t Janis listen to them?

‘That’s because she doesn’t have that good sense of hearing, Violet,’ Opal said. ‘I can hear the groans too,’ she added. ‘They are coming from the right, beneath the staircase.’ I walked towards the staircase.

“Where are you going, missy?” Janis growled a protest. “There’s no one and we should get out of here before Martha comes. I don’t want to get into trouble!”
