My breath lodged in my throat when I looked at the two of them. They were both looking like they were in cahoots, and that explained everything. Martha was a part of the conspiracy that Emily had woven.

“Where are you going?” Martha asked as her smile turned into a grin. “And why are you taking my employee with you?”

I shook my head as Janis’s mouth dropped to the floor. “I should’ve known.”

“You should have,” Martha chuckled. “But you have to say that I played my part pretty beautifully.” She turned over her shoulder to look at Emily. “You were right. She’s so gullible. It took time for me to convince her, but she took the bait.”
