It’s 8 in the morning but she can feel the heat of the afternoon as she walks on the sidewalk,
Mayari stood in front of a tall building, this is her first day as a writer intern at Moonlight’s publishing house.
She took a deep breath and walked towards the crowded hallway of the building and nervously reached the elevator buttons.
Unfamiliar faces greeted her as the elevator door opens, she grabbed her phone and turn the volume up to ease the rising tension in her chest. She’s nervous and excited at the same time.
Elevator reached the 7th floor where she was supposed to go. The door opened and there goes the people who will work with her for the next months.
She stood on the corner while waiting for their team leader.
Minutes passed and the elevator opened again and a man his age came out from it. He looks familiar…
“Apollo?” she called the guy and the latter look behind him to see if she was talking to him.
“Mayari, remember?
Everyone in the room was obviously older than them. Twenty-four is the closer to their age.
“Sir, would you mind moving here? He stood up then sat beside Mayari.
Mayari just looks at him then rolled her eyes.
After 4 hours of lecture, their instructor told them to go to the 10th floor for their I.D’s.
“Ikaw?
“My Dad just asked me to. Ayoko naman talaga but I kinda enjoy writing," He answered
“Huy! Ayan yung pinaka-mahabang nasabi mo ngayon araw. Ang galing!” namamanghang sabi ni Mayari
“Ginawa mo naman akong bata," Apollo said and slightly formed a smile.
“Cute mo pag naka smile ka, you should often do that,” Mayari said.
They both laughed.
8 hours passed and they both finished their first day, Apollo immediately left and Mayari stayed at the near coffee shop, she doesn’t feel fine. She decided to let her brothers stay at their aunt’s house… hindi niya rin alam kung magagampanan niya pa ang pagiging ate sa mga ito, wala na siya sa sarili.
She stayed in an abandon building’s rooftop near her school. She badly wants to end everything but she’s the only person her brothers have, kaya mas pinipili niyang sumubok araw araw.
“Would you jump?” a familiar deep voice said
“Oh? Anong ginagawa mo rito?” she asked Apollo
“Can you imagine leaving everything behind?” Apollo ignored her question and just look at the sky
Parehas silang nakatingin sa kawalan. Mayari was surprised with this side of him.
It feels like I’ve known him for a while now, Mayari thought.
“Do you believe in heaven?” he asked
“Hindi, but I’m hoping na meron,” she smiled, thinking about her parents.
“How’d you know about this place pala?” Mayari changed the topic
“I used to hide here. When bullies from grade school are chasing me, tumatakbo ako rito. They see this as haunted but this was somehow my safe place,” Apollo said.
Apollo looked at the sky.
“When I was a kid, I used to believe that at the end of the sea andon ‘yong moon,” he chuckled
“Hoy!
“I was named after the God of sun,” Apollo smiled
“Hoy seryoso ba?” he just nodded.
“You want to try something crazy?” Apollo asked with a smirk
Mayari asked
“Just write everything there.
“Then? Ano nang gagawin natin?”
“Basagin mo, ihagis mo sa paraang gusto mo,” turo ni Apollo “Advice lang, hagis mo siya using your non-dominant hand.
“Feeling a lot better?” Apollo asked
“Yeah, thank you,” she sincerely smiled at him.
“I made this playlist para lang dito sa lugar na ‘to. Para tumulala, para mag-isip,” saad niya at nagpatugtog
Magdamag lamang silang naupo at tumingin sa kawalan. Hindi na rin nila namalayan ang oras.
“It’s past 10, you should go home na,” Apollo said to Mayari
“Ang conyo mo ha!” Tinawanan lang siya ni Mayari “But no, I don’t feel like going home tonight. I just want to escape for a while, ngayon ko na lang ulit naramdaman yung ganitong klase ng peace,” dagdag pa ng dalaga
“So am I,” pag-sang ayon ni Apollo
“So, what are we going to do?” she asked
“What are you doing?” sigaw ni Apollo
“Dancing, like no one’s watching,” she said and continue dancing, Apollo shook his head then joined Mayari under the rain.
Mayari feels safe.
It feels warm.
Mayari immediately went inside her room the moment she got home. She cried again and look at her parent’s picture. Everything’s falling apart now.
She grabs her notebook and starts writing down on her diary…
“October 7,
I hang out with a stranger today. It feels weird but refreshing at the same time.
She put her pen down and lie down.
Mayari was awakened by a loud knock on her door, she rubbed her eyes and slowly walked outside. She didn’t bother looking in the mirror or wash her face because the knock sounds urgent. “Ms. Torres?” a guy in suit and tie greets her, behind him was a small middle-aged lady “Uhm, yes? Ano po ‘yon?” she asked “We will just leave a notice that you must vacate this apartment before the end of the month,” the guy said and hand her an envelope Her eyes widened with the guy's statement and checked the papers inside the envelope handed to her, she just woke up and still feels hazy to process the information written. “Sorry I must be spacing out, I just woke up. Can you please repeat what you just said?” she asked again, trying to convince herself that she heard it wrong. “Attorney, ako na po,” Sumingit ang babae sa likuran nito “Hi, Mayari, you might not remember me but we’ve met before. Maliit ka pa no’n, your parents decided
Mayari came home from the coffee shop, tears immediately fell down the moment she closed her front door. She looked around the apartment, this is the last thing with her parent’s memories; she grew up here. On the side of the doorway were the scratches her mom made to monitor their heights, the last scratch was five years ago—before her parents died. The phonograph that her Dad gave her mom as a birthday present was still there, it looks old now. They use to play their wedding song there and dance in the living room, setting aside their furniture and dance like crazy. That’s weird for her when she was younger but it all made sense now. That’s what love looks like. Most of the things turned grey covered with dust. She’s been too busy with her life to at least sweep the floor and clean their stuff. She walked towards the couch and lay down, she used to sleep here when she was a kid and everything feels like magic when she wakes up in her bed in the morning. She u
“I don’t know what happened but if you want to talk about it, I’ll listen. Whatever it is, I hope it will be alright, I hope you’re fine.” Tila wala siyang naririnig at nakikita, tuli
Mayari stood in front of a funeral home, it’s been a while since she went to a place like this. The last one was her parents’. There are people in their white shirts walking in and out, the familiar scent of mourning was present. Everyone has this specific face; the same expressions she saw on her parents’ burial. The image of loss and sadness reflects their faces. Flowers are arranged in the cruelest way beside the photo of an old lady. This is the feeling that Mayari doesn’t want to be familiar with. She walked past the aisle and went to Apollo, “Hey,” she greeted him Apollo looked at her with anguish and exhaustion, she sat beside him and held his hands. The thing is—she never learned how to console someone, especially in this kind of situation. She doesn’t know what to say but she knows she needs to stay with Apollo. “My mother died on my 5th birthday,” Apollo said without looking at Mayari, “I was so excited kasi finall
They were walking on the sidewalk looking for a cab, it just stopped raining and cars are rare at this time of night. The street rested in silence under the cloudy black sky, trees on the roadside are dancing along with the cold breeze. This brings them peace. “This is what peace looks like,” Apollo said “Peace has different faces, it’s just a piece of it,” Mayari said then smiled They stopped at the waiting shed and sat on a cold metal seat. “You haven’t mentioned your brothers huh?” she said and lean back “I don’t want to talk about them,” he said then shook his head “Hmm, anyway, malapit ko nang matapos ‘yong film ko. You want to see it?” she offered to change the topic “Yeah, sure, some other time,” a cab stopped in front of them, they stood up then walk towards it. “Just give me a call, if you need anything, ha?” she said then tap Apollo’s head “I’ll be fine, go home and get some rest, let’s start looking f
“Do you think we can make it? Do you think we’ll win?” tanong niya kay Chloe Kasalukuyan silang nasa bahay nito kung saan ginaganap ang pag e-edit ng kanilang pelikula. “I hope so,” the latter answered The film festival will happen a week from now, she knows that the only thing she can do now is hope while waiting. “Hey, what’s up?” Apollo entered the room holding cans of soda and wrapped his arms around her neck. “Are you two really just friends-friends?” Chloe from her seat looked up to them and raised her eyebrows. “Anong balita sa film niyo?” Apollo asked, ignoring Chloe’s question. “Well, we’ll know the results next week,” Chloe answered “Oh, sakto! We have to bring a “partner” on the premiere night, you should join Mayari!” she added. “No, he doesn’t have to!” pagtutol ni Mayari at tinapunan ng masamang tingin ang kaibigan “He has more important things to do--” “Oh, I’d loved to,” Apollo interrupted
Mayari’s entrance was far from what he expected. She was running barefoot down the stairs, her blue stilettos are tangled on her left arm while she’s putting her earring
Mayari was sitting next to the window of the pantry, she can see the buildings, the trees dancing with the wind, and the busy streets under the raging sun. It’s been a week since she admitted her feelings for Apollo, a week since she last saw him. She can’t help but wonder, is Apollo part of the view she’s seeing right now? Or he’s at home, laying on his bed all day—not bothering to read her messages; like a coward. “Ouch! Shit, that hurts!” her attention was caught by a guy standing beside her… there goes that uncomfortable aura conquering her personal space. “Sorry, I fell. Masyadong malalim ‘yang iniisip mo eh,” Aman joked with his signature smirk and sat at the monoblock chair across Mayari “What now?” Mayari asked, she’s not really in a mood to deal with Aman’s presence. “Nothing, I was about to get some lunch then nakita kita. I thought you need some company,” he said then smiled.
Bring her here, I got s
They’re going back to Basco today and unfortunately, Chloe received a call from her parents that they have an emergency and she need to go back to Manila. Mayari told her that they can come home with her but Chloe insisted, telling them to enjoy their remaining days in Basco. “I will, Lola. “Can we visit Angela? Just to say goodbye?” Apollo asked. He and Angela doesn’t have a certain connection except that he has her Father’s memory
“Ano ba ‘yon?” Mayari said with her morning voice and covered her face with a pillow.
“We can see the progress, David! Isn’t that enough reason to believe that somehow it’s what we needed?” sigaw pabalik ni Anton. “And you became a victim of an illusion! It’s just a magic show that made a fool like yo
“Before I met you do’n sa shooting niyo, no’ng una akala ko panaginip lang hanggang nakita kita no’n. “Are we really going to do this?” tanong ni Apollo “If you lived a life as Cyrus, we have to know what happened to them,” “To us,” pagtatama ni Apollo, hindi ito pinansin ni Mayari.
“Would you run away with me?” Apollo was the first one to break the silence. “You realize that I’m not kidding, right?” kunot noong tanong niya sa dalaga. “Yeah, and I find it funny,” tumatawa pa ring saad niya “Stop messing around, I don’t find it attractive,” she said then tap his shoulders. “I want to be with you,” saad nito “Fix your shits, Apollo. Don’t leave her hanging after pro
“You good?” tanong ni Apollo at umupo sa tabi niya. It was eleven in the morning and the heat of the afternoon sun collides with the cold breeze from the sea. They’re looking at the sea from above the mountains, making their name “Apollo” and “Mayari” started to make sense, it almost feels like they are watching their own creations from the skies. “I really feel like the God of Sun right now,” Apollo said then looked up. “We’re talking now?” Mayari raised her eyebrows. Apollo took the bottle from her hand. “Balik tayo sa Angel’s,” he said while looking at the letter. “Do you like her?” Mayari asked “Is that your hobby? Bothering someone’s life because you like them and when they’re starting to like you back, suddenly, you’re secret
