SERENA
This is when the little heart starts to flutter, leaving us to stutter, and fill up with burning desires, tempting us to commit sins. This is when everything starts to go wrong. When we meet someone whom we should not. I can tell you my not-so-simple story.
___
“You are awesome.”
A simple compliment makes one's day. I hugged Mira, one of my colleagues, who passed the compliment.
“But…”
And, a simple ‘But’ ruins everything, especially when it comes from the person, who's above us.
"It should have been amazing if you have used tulips instead of lilies.”
I nodded my head while faking a smile. The floral décor I have done at a party was appreciated by everyone except the so-called person in charge. She never accepted or appreciated whatever we did. Being her assistant takes a lot of patience.
“I should not see any mistake in tonight's party. Don't do anything without my permission. You all… be my good assistants.” She then looked at me and said “Don’t try to act like the boss of these floral decorations.”
I could never understand what her problem was with me. She might be my senior but she was also one of the workers, just like me.
While I was taking care of the flowers and managing customers, I heard my friends talking to each other about their girlfriends and boyfriends, and some people were getting calls from their families. To me, the only call I get was from customer care. Damn my life! Yes, single since birth but never pitied myself even though sometimes I felt alone.
“I'll be back in the evening. I’ll come before we all start going to the hotel.” Mira said.
“Oh yes! Even I have to go.” I said, taking my handbag. “I'll go and check how he is or if someone came for him.”
She rolled her eyes. She put her palm on my shoulder, saying “It’s good to be kind but unnecessary kindness puts you into trouble. Mind it.”
“What is necessary kindness and unnecessary kindness?” I scoffed. “Don’t worry. I’ll just check how he is and come back.”
We both walked out. I took a cab to reach the hospital to see how he was doing. Last night, I saw an old man faint on the road so I joined him in the hospital, which cost me a lot of my money.
“Nothing to worry about. He’ll be fine in a day. But, he should take care of his fractured hand.” The nurse told me. Her words were a relief because I couldn’t afford him to stay at the hospital for more days which might cost me other expenses. I stood beside the man, who was sleeping peacefully. It felt like if I had a father, he might be around his age and look like him.
I reached my rented house and took a little nap before I started going to the five-star hotel. Looking at the hotel's interior, my mouth dropped wide open. It was massive and all the walls were screaming richness. I let out a sigh as I noticed my attire; a plain t-shirt and jeans along with the overcoat on which our shop's name was printed.
“What are you thinking?” Mira elbowed me as I was lost in my thoughts.
“Huh! Um, nothing.” I smiled. “Come, let’s start our work.”
We started decorating the hall, where a couple was going to celebrate their wedding anniversary. People like me find reasons to avoid celebrations, whereas, the rich find reasons to celebrate.
A bright smile appeared on my lips after I decorated the wall with roses and sunflowers but it didn’t last long when Emma started to mess with my decoration. Though I felt like slapping her, I kept quiet. If I weren’t her assistant, I would’ve done it for sure.
She kept messing with my decoration and the last ounce of patience I had in me faded. I asked, “Emma, Why are you doing this?”
“Doing what?”
“I may be your assistant but my design, choice of flowers, and decoration…” she wouldn’t let me finish my sentence. She said, raising her eyebrows “I already told you to not do anything without consulting me. Do you think you are a boss? People should know where they belong. It is better if an assistant acts only like an assistant.”
Her words angered me. I fisted my palm while controlling myself from the anger that was consuming me. Without saying anything, I walked away from her.
“Are you fine?” Mira asked.
I shook my head negatively. “It is suffocating here.” I gritted my teeth. “I'll take some fresh air and will be back.”
I thought to go out but seeing many people near the entrance I changed my mind. I reached the terrace, hoping no one would be there as I wanted to be away from people. As I expected, no one was there so I walked toward the railings, and then I noticed a man standing at the edge of the terrace and it seemed he was about to jump off the building.
Without giving a second thought, I ran towards him and held his hand, shouting “Hey!”
He turned to me and I got the chance to see him. With his intimidating black eyes and perfect jawline, he looked as if he came straight out of romance novels. And, not to mention his deep, scary voice when he asked “What do you want, little girl?”
Never in my life have I thought I would be scared only by someone's voice. His aura was dominating which made me gulp. What's more, he called me a little girl when he, himself, looked the same age as mine."I am twenty-three," I yelled. "And, I could understand you also must be of the same age." I scoffed. When he tried to free his hand from my grip, I held it with both my hands, and shouted “Are you insane?” He narrowed his eyebrows, and at the same time, he clenched his jaw. “What did you say?” With all my strength, I pulled him back while he looked at me with a serious as well as confused face. “You…” I didn’t let him finish his sentence. I shouted “I know life is tough but it is not an option. I don’t know what your problem is, but if everyone, who has problems decide to die, then no one will remain on this earth.” “Listen…” he pointed his finger at me. “Life is precious. Think about your family before you commit suicide.” I tried to put some sense into his head. “Suicide?
Sometimes, the things we thought would never appear in our lives again, would come rushing toward us. A mere coincidence or if fate has already planned it, no one could tell. “Do you like staying in my arms this much?” He smirked, as I remained in the same position without even attempting to move. Immediately, I stood straight and asked “Were you following me?” He gave me a deadly stare that made me think I was not even worth being followed by anyone. “I… didn’t mean to be rude.” I scoffed. “Of course, why would anyone follow me?” “What are you doing alone here? Aren’t you aware of the crime rate or are you not scared of people, who commit crimes?” Not just his words but his eyes were commanding. Who could he be? He seemed as if he were a walking mystery. “I… I was with my friend and…” I stopped speaking. “W-wait! Why am I even explaining to you?” “Because I asked you a question.” He rolled his eyes. I stepped forward to leave but he stopped me, saying “Don’t go that way.”“W
I could not believe what I was seeing. The man, who left the hospital, without even informing anyone came back after two weeks. At my house, in front of me. “You…” “Ms. Serena! I’m sorry for leaving without informing you.” He apologized. “I had some work to take care of.” Even though I was raging, I simply nodded my head. I could not get into fights with elders. “How do you know my place? And, how do you know about me?” “I have gathered your details from the hospital staff. I have connections.” He winked. When I didn’t reply to him, he said “I think you are so angry at me. Can’t you forgive, thinking of me as your father?” Father? I knew it was just a word that slipped out of his mouth and it meant nothing to him but it made me smile a little. I shrugged my shoulders, saying “Fine! That’s okay. You must be having your reasons but it would have been nice if you have at least left a message.” “I apologize again.” He said and became silent for a few seconds. “Well… I am
Again. I saw him again. The shirtless, muscular man in front of me was Hayden, and the funniest thing was I came to deliver flowers to him. “Care to explain what you are doing here?” He asked in his usual serious tone. “You are taking pictures. Who the hell are you? Are you spying on me?” I let out a sigh after hearing him. There we go again, him and his narcissistic self. “Instead of helping me, you are posing questions. Do you think so highly of yourself? I’m not here to spy on you, I’m not your fan girl.” I rolled my eyes. “I came here to deliver your black roses.” “And, where is my bouquet?” he asked, crouching down. I bent my head down and mumbled “It fell into the pool.” Through the corner of my eyes, I saw him extending his hand. “Come out of the pool.” “No!” “Why? Do you like my swimming pool this much?” “I am drenched,” I shouted, frustrated. Then I noticed him walk towards the sun lounger and took the towel that was on the seat. He put it on the ground and turned b
SERENA Wow! Interesting wall. No, no, interesting vase. The color, the shape… Don’t speak. “Fuck!” I let out a sigh as I couldn’t get deviated from his thoughts despite how much I tried. That moment was still playing in front of my eyes, the way he held me and looked into my eyes. “What are you thinking about?” Mira asked, standing beside me. “About the arrival of your childhood love?” “Mira!” She wiggled her eyebrows. “Not him…” I pressed my lips together. “There was this guy… a mysterious one…” I saw her getting excited. “And…?” “And nothing.” I laughed. “He was different. Whenever we met, we always quarreled. That arrogant jerk…” “Are you changing the hero of your story? Or what?” she started to tease me. “No!” I made a proud face. “Because the hero of my story is myself.” I sold the last bouquet before I started to walk out. When I opened the door, I saw Mr. Otis in front of me. In his casual hoodie, spectacles, and a different hairstyle, I nearly couldn’t re
It was surprising to see him as he didn’t inform me beforehand. My lips curved up with a smile but I came back to my senses when I saw Eric struggling to catch his breath. “Who the hell are you?” Hayden growled. I held Hayden’s hand that was holding Eric’s throat and tried to free Eric while saying “Hayden, leave him. He is my friend.”Even after hearing me, Hayden gripped his throat for a few seconds and then he left him. Eric fell to his knees, coughing. I crouched down and patted his back, gently. “Eric, are you alright?” As he was still trying to catch his breath, I looked at Hayden and shouted “What have you done, Hayden!” “He’s lucky he’s still alive.” He mumbled. “Eric! I’m so sorry.” I held his face in between my palms. Finally, our gazes met after a long time. His chocolate brown eyes, which I always adored, made me smile. “Serena!” he spoke while standing straight. Then his gaze fell on Hayden, who looked unbothered even after what he had done. “Who is he?” “Who are
“Don’t you think this rose lipstick is weird on me?” I asked, looking at my reflection in the mirror. My long black frock, straightened hair, and high heels made me look different than usual. Despite how much Mira tried to make me beautiful, I was never satisfied. She did an amazing job with the makeup but something was lacking; confidence. I didn’t know why, I always felt I was abandoned because my face didn’t please my parents. It started from there. Every time people adopted my friends at the orphanage, my classmates got praised for how perfect they looked, all those little things somewhat increased my insecurity about my looks. “You look amazing,” Mira shouted, fed up with my doubts and questions. “Don’t think much.” She wrapped her arms around me, saying “Remember, you are going on a date. You better don’t ruin this makeup.” I was not sure why he asked me to go on a date with him, I didn’t even know what he meant by a proper date. Anyhow, I accepted as I wanted to spend time w
My eyes were wide open but all I could see was darkness and in it, I kept seeing Hayden. I could not forget the previous night's moments, especially the hug. I thought Eric would make that day special but Hayden came out of nowhere. Anyone could think I was overreacting but I was not. “I think you are planning to resign. You won’t even care about your superiors' words now.” I heard Emma that made me come out of my thoughts. “Sorry?” “I have been talking to you for the past five minutes. And, now you respond?” She shouted. I was zoned out. I didn’t listen to her. “Oh! I… I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to ignore you or something like that.” I apologized sincerely. She glared at me for a few seconds before saying "Arrange everything that we need for the evening’s event.” “Sure.” She rolled her eyes and walked to Jasper to assign work to him. I sat on the chair, letting out a sigh. Controlling myself from all the thoughts that were distracting me from doing my work, I started to take
