Sometimes, the things we thought would never appear in our lives again, would come rushing toward us. A mere coincidence or if fate has already planned it, no one could tell.
“Do you like staying in my arms this much?” He smirked, as I remained in the same position without even attempting to move.
Immediately, I stood straight and asked “Were you following me?”
He gave me a deadly stare that made me think I was not even worth being followed by anyone.
“I… didn’t mean to be rude.” I scoffed. “Of course, why would anyone follow me?”
“What are you doing alone here? Aren’t you aware of the crime rate or are you not scared of people, who commit crimes?”
Not just his words but his eyes were commanding. Who could he be? He seemed as if he were a walking mystery.
“I… I was with my friend and…” I stopped speaking. “W-wait! Why am I even explaining to you?”
“Because I asked you a question.” He rolled his eyes.
I stepped forward to leave but he stopped me, saying “Don’t go that way.”
“Why?”
“What’s your name again? Selena?”
“SERENA!”
“Whatever! If someone tells you to do something, be a good girl and listen to them.”
Ignoring him, I walked forward after pushing his hand that was trying to hold me.
“If you meet drunk guys or strange men out there, don’t scream because no one is going to help you.” He said in his calm tone.
My walk halted abruptly as soon as I heard him. There was no reason for him to lie so I chose to listen to him. Slowly, I turned around to face him, and I saw his bleeding palm, which he was ignoring carelessly.
Then my gaze fell on the nail that was hammered into the wall. His hand was hit to the wall when I pushed it. It seemed the cut was already there and when I pushed his hand, it got worsened. “I… I’m sorry…”
I could see the flow of blood but he seemed unbothered. I took a step toward him, and said again “I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to push like that…”
Before I could finish my sentence, he dragged me with his other hand and pinned me against the wall, caging me with his one hand. Suddenly, his face turned serious which frightened me, a little.
He spoke in his serious tone “Listen, I never give a shit about others. Instead of considering yourself lucky because I told you something, you chose to go against me.”
He was thinking so highly of himself, I could understand it. He was angry because I ignored him not because of the cut on his palm. But, how could he give a blind eye to his cut?
I ignored his glare and took his hand, saying “It must be hurting. Let’s treat this wound.”
He took his hand away, saying “It’s not because of you. Don’t feel guilty about it.”
“But, the pain is real, isn’t it?”
He didn’t reply anything and the seriousness on his face faded.
From my bag, I took out the water bottle and kerchief to treat his wound.
“Don’t sympathize with the people. It takes you nowhere.” He scoffed.
After placing the kerchief on his wound, I told him “You should treat it properly…”
His deep stare was making me a little uncomfortable. I left his hand and turned around to leave but I halted my walk as I couldn’t stop feeling guilty. Again, I looked at him and gave him a small smile. “I’m Serena.”
“I know.” He shrugged his shoulders.
“I’m just introducing myself formally.” I bit my lips. “I don’t know if I am the sole reason for your wound or not. But, I wasn’t wrong. For your action, I pushed your hand.”
He kept his gaze on the kerchief that I tied around his palm.
If someone introduces themselves, they expect others to do the same. Like all others, I waited for him to speak but he didn't speak anything.
“Take care of your wound,” I said.
As if he read my mind, he looked at me and said “I’m Hayden.”
“So Mr. Hayden, nice to meet you.”
He let out a sarcastic chuckle. “Not everyone, who meets me, says that.”
We both kept silent for a few seconds. Then I said, breaking the silence “I have to go.”
I didn’t bother to hear his reply and walked away taking another route.
____Taking off my dirty shoes, I entered my house. It was a tough day as we had to take care of an event. If there held a competition for leading a boring life, I would be the prize winner. Work and home. Home and work. Every day was the same.
I took a hot shower, changed into my shorts, and fell on the bed. As usual, I started to scroll through my I*******m, and I saw Eric posted new pictures of himself. A small smile appeared on my lips and I pressed the like button below the post.
When I was in high school, we used to be good friends and I had a crush on him. Then he left for abroad. I couldn’t even get the chance to express my feelings. Then everyone became busy with their lives.
Hey Serena! – Eric
I jump to a sitting position as soon as I received his text. My mouth dropped wide open and it took me a few seconds to realize he texted me.
Hey! How are you? – I texted.
It had been many years since we talked to each other. My teenage crush on him might have disappeared, but he would always be a special person to me.
“As always, amazing. How are you?"
It felt unreal. Chatting with him after so long felt weird.
Want to catch up sometime? – Eric
I narrowed my eyebrows as I saw the text. I asked him where he was and he said he’d come back in a few days.
That’s awesome. Let’s meet for sure – I replied to his text.
My smile widened. The excitement of meeting him after many years wouldn’t let me focus on anything. Though there was no story between us and I could understand he must be having a girlfriend already, the thought of I could at least get a chance to be with my first crush elated me.
After talking to him for a few minutes, I went offline. I headed to the kitchen to cook dinner. Quickly, I prepared oatmeal and turned on N*****x. I knew it was a breakfast recipe but I had no energy to prepare anything else so I decided to fill my stomach with it.
As I was about to fill my mouth with a spoonful of it, someone rang the doorbell.
Irritated, I stood from the bed. I knew it must be my irritating neighbors, who never let me stay in peace. I walked towards the door and decided to start quarreling with my nosy neighbors. They were here only to irritate me or to invade my privacy.
“What now…” I opened the door, frustrated, but seeing him in front of me, I was frozen.
I could not believe what I was seeing. The man, who left the hospital, without even informing anyone came back after two weeks. At my house, in front of me. “You…” “Ms. Serena! I’m sorry for leaving without informing you.” He apologized. “I had some work to take care of.” Even though I was raging, I simply nodded my head. I could not get into fights with elders. “How do you know my place? And, how do you know about me?” “I have gathered your details from the hospital staff. I have connections.” He winked. When I didn’t reply to him, he said “I think you are so angry at me. Can’t you forgive, thinking of me as your father?” Father? I knew it was just a word that slipped out of his mouth and it meant nothing to him but it made me smile a little. I shrugged my shoulders, saying “Fine! That’s okay. You must be having your reasons but it would have been nice if you have at least left a message.” “I apologize again.” He said and became silent for a few seconds. “Well… I am
Again. I saw him again. The shirtless, muscular man in front of me was Hayden, and the funniest thing was I came to deliver flowers to him. “Care to explain what you are doing here?” He asked in his usual serious tone. “You are taking pictures. Who the hell are you? Are you spying on me?” I let out a sigh after hearing him. There we go again, him and his narcissistic self. “Instead of helping me, you are posing questions. Do you think so highly of yourself? I’m not here to spy on you, I’m not your fan girl.” I rolled my eyes. “I came here to deliver your black roses.” “And, where is my bouquet?” he asked, crouching down. I bent my head down and mumbled “It fell into the pool.” Through the corner of my eyes, I saw him extending his hand. “Come out of the pool.” “No!” “Why? Do you like my swimming pool this much?” “I am drenched,” I shouted, frustrated. Then I noticed him walk towards the sun lounger and took the towel that was on the seat. He put it on the ground and turned b
SERENA Wow! Interesting wall. No, no, interesting vase. The color, the shape… Don’t speak. “Fuck!” I let out a sigh as I couldn’t get deviated from his thoughts despite how much I tried. That moment was still playing in front of my eyes, the way he held me and looked into my eyes. “What are you thinking about?” Mira asked, standing beside me. “About the arrival of your childhood love?” “Mira!” She wiggled her eyebrows. “Not him…” I pressed my lips together. “There was this guy… a mysterious one…” I saw her getting excited. “And…?” “And nothing.” I laughed. “He was different. Whenever we met, we always quarreled. That arrogant jerk…” “Are you changing the hero of your story? Or what?” she started to tease me. “No!” I made a proud face. “Because the hero of my story is myself.” I sold the last bouquet before I started to walk out. When I opened the door, I saw Mr. Otis in front of me. In his casual hoodie, spectacles, and a different hairstyle, I nearly couldn’t re
It was surprising to see him as he didn’t inform me beforehand. My lips curved up with a smile but I came back to my senses when I saw Eric struggling to catch his breath. “Who the hell are you?” Hayden growled. I held Hayden’s hand that was holding Eric’s throat and tried to free Eric while saying “Hayden, leave him. He is my friend.”Even after hearing me, Hayden gripped his throat for a few seconds and then he left him. Eric fell to his knees, coughing. I crouched down and patted his back, gently. “Eric, are you alright?” As he was still trying to catch his breath, I looked at Hayden and shouted “What have you done, Hayden!” “He’s lucky he’s still alive.” He mumbled. “Eric! I’m so sorry.” I held his face in between my palms. Finally, our gazes met after a long time. His chocolate brown eyes, which I always adored, made me smile. “Serena!” he spoke while standing straight. Then his gaze fell on Hayden, who looked unbothered even after what he had done. “Who is he?” “Who are
“Don’t you think this rose lipstick is weird on me?” I asked, looking at my reflection in the mirror. My long black frock, straightened hair, and high heels made me look different than usual. Despite how much Mira tried to make me beautiful, I was never satisfied. She did an amazing job with the makeup but something was lacking; confidence. I didn’t know why, I always felt I was abandoned because my face didn’t please my parents. It started from there. Every time people adopted my friends at the orphanage, my classmates got praised for how perfect they looked, all those little things somewhat increased my insecurity about my looks. “You look amazing,” Mira shouted, fed up with my doubts and questions. “Don’t think much.” She wrapped her arms around me, saying “Remember, you are going on a date. You better don’t ruin this makeup.” I was not sure why he asked me to go on a date with him, I didn’t even know what he meant by a proper date. Anyhow, I accepted as I wanted to spend time w
My eyes were wide open but all I could see was darkness and in it, I kept seeing Hayden. I could not forget the previous night's moments, especially the hug. I thought Eric would make that day special but Hayden came out of nowhere. Anyone could think I was overreacting but I was not. “I think you are planning to resign. You won’t even care about your superiors' words now.” I heard Emma that made me come out of my thoughts. “Sorry?” “I have been talking to you for the past five minutes. And, now you respond?” She shouted. I was zoned out. I didn’t listen to her. “Oh! I… I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to ignore you or something like that.” I apologized sincerely. She glared at me for a few seconds before saying "Arrange everything that we need for the evening’s event.” “Sure.” She rolled her eyes and walked to Jasper to assign work to him. I sat on the chair, letting out a sigh. Controlling myself from all the thoughts that were distracting me from doing my work, I started to take
Although we all received our payment, we were saddened as the event didn’t happen and our effort had gone to waste. No one could expect how death arrives. Who would expect a rich businessman would suddenly die of a heart attack in the middle of a birthday celebration? Apart from that, I couldn’t stop thinking about Hayden. His angry face, his punch, and the way he made the man kneel wouldn’t stop revolving in my head. It made me feel my life was valued and it was not worthless. His behavior overwhelmed me and I would never forget it. Also, I wondered if the client who was dead, was the one whom Hayden met in the hotel and the thought of Hayden might be saddened because of his death worried me so I texted him if he was fine. I kept looking at my cell phone, waiting for Hayden’s reply. Hayden – I’m alright. Why would I cry over his death? He replied to my text. It clarified me he was there to meet someone else. Knowing that Hayden was alright, I felt relaxed. We might not have had a
“A kiss.” I could hear my heart that was thumping so fast. The raise in my body temperature was evident to say my cheeks had turned red, even though I couldn’t see it. “W-what…” I stuttered. “One kiss, one piece of information.” He winked in a flirty way. I pushed him by his chest as he raised his hand to stroke my cheeks. He started to laugh as I shouted “You pervert!” He wouldn’t stop laughing while I threw daggers with my eyes. “Stop playing with me. I’m going to kill you.” “You should have seen your face.” He continued to laugh. As I kept glaring at him, he said “Oh, don’t be sad, if you want you can kiss me.” “Not kiss… I’m going to kill you.” I hit him with my elbow. Then we became silent and kept enjoying the view. As I looked at the water in front of me, I started to have a weird imagination of going on an Ocean trip that made me wonder if Hayden ever traveled by sea. I asked “Ever done sea travel?” I suddenly remembered how he never had the chance to enjoy himself at
